The Cave Of Wonders

Wind and sand blasted Trunks square in his face and body that night, and even using his palm as a shield he could barely make out where he was going. The old man, who rode much more comfortably on the horse he led, seemed to know the way by heart, even with a weak sandstorm trying to send them back.

Trunks stopped and turned his face away from the wind. He couldn't see! So much sand had gotten in his eyes that they were watering in an attempt to flush it all out.

"Don't stop now boy! We're almost there!" Screeched the old man impatiently, who's entire face was covered with enough clothe so that he could keep the sand out of his eyes without blinding himself. Trunks was sure that if the old man had a switch on him he wouldn't hesitate to use it on him to make him go faster. It was the second time Trunks had to stop and he was loosing his temper.

Trunks was grateful he wasn't in the custody of Satan anymore, but with all the old man's screeching, Trunks was beginning to wonder if he should have stayed in his prison cell.

'Easy for him to say.' Thought Trunks. 'He's not half blind.'

Regardless, Trunks continued on, fighting against the wind and fighting to keep the sand out of his eyes. He was doing this for Gohan and no one else. Period. And it would take a lot more then the temper of an old man to make him turn back.

Still, even Yajirabu was having trouble with the storm, and he was using the thin material of Trunks' vest to cover his face, but somehow it just seemed to get everywhere...

***

In what seemed like hours later, the storm suddenly stopped as soon as it had picked up. Even if Trunks could bat an eye through all the sand in it, he wouldn't have. Sandstorms were unpredictable and having one start up and stop so quickly was nothing he wasn't already used to.

What was strange however, was the way the old man hopped off the back of the horse they had stolen. Almost gracefully, like he was years younger. Stranger then that, when Trunks finally managed to clear his eyes out and look up at what the old man was admiring so passionately, he found himself gazing up into the face of a cave, carved into the shape of a dragon's head.

Trunks had never seen anything like it. "Allah... what is it? It looks like it's made out of sand--"

"Shhh!" Hissed the old man, and to Trunks' horror, the cave opened its jaws and spoke.

"Who disturbs my slumber?"

The voice was deep, and it reminded Trunks of an earthquake, but it didn't sound angry at all.

"Answer the question boy!"

Trunks' jaw dropped. He was expected to speak to it?

"Uh... It is I... Alatrunks." Trunks said, fighting the urge to take a step back as the dragons head came closer and inspected him. Yajirabu was terrified, shivering beneath the protective covers of Trunk's vest. Trunks was glad he didn't try to run away.

It rose one sandy eyebrow at him. Trunks looked into those eyes and found something sparkling inside, but the dragon backed off before he could see what it was.

"Proceed. Touch nothing but the rice cooker!" And giant jaws snapped wide open.

Against his better judgment, Trunks took a step forward and looked into the mouth. There was a stairway leading down into the darkness.

"Remember boy," Screeched the old man, and Trunks whipped his head to look at him. "First, get me that rice cooker! And then, you shall have your reward!"

Trunks turned back to the mouth of the cave and took a deep breath. "C'mon Yajirabu." He whispered, taking a tentative step into the mouth before making his way down.

It felt like he was walking forever. There seemed to be no end to the spiralling staircase, and to make matters worse, there was still no light, and twice before making it to the bottom Trunks very nearly fell off the stairs.

When he did finally make it to the bottom, Trunks found nothing but darkness. Pitch black, and he wondered how he was expected to find his way when he didn't so much as bring a torch with him. But then, as though it were reading his thoughts, the walls of the cave lit up in a bright flash that caused his body to sway back in the shock and Yajirabu to shriek in terror.

Trunks looked around for the cause but found nothing at all. No one nearby. The torches on the plain, sand walls had lit themselves.

Trying not to let his fear get the better of him, Trunks' eyes zoomed in on an open doorway. It was like an arch in the wall with no door separating him from the other side, so he approached slowly.

What he saw on the other side took his breath away, Yajirabu was cowering fearfully in his vest.

"Would you look at all that?" He whispered to the monkey, awed before laughing out loud.

Mountains and mountains of gold coins which sparkled with the few torches on the wall and lit up the room. Gems, diamonds and rubies were scattered about on the floor, thrown there carelessly because there was no space to put them. Swords and shields made of gold and silver. Pots and kettles with precious stones mingling in with intricate designs stood proudly. Rugs were on the floor and hanging on the walls.

There was more than enough in the cave to make every poor beggar in Truhania a rich man.

Eyes lit up with lustful greed, Yajirabu jumped from his perch and made a mad dash for the treasure.

"Yajirabu!" Screamed Trunks, stopping the monkey seconds before he could swan dive into the coins.

Trunks pointed a finger at him. "Do not touch anything!" He hissed. He was inside the belly of the strangest creature he'd ever seen. The very last thing he wanted to do was to anger it.

"We should find that rice cooker." He said offhandedly, walking away and taking great care not to even step on any of the coins on the floor.

Yajirabu put his little fists to his hips and followed, pouting all the way.

Trunks circled most of the smaller piles of treasure once or twice, having to stand on his toes to see the very top, searching for the rice cooker. Eventually, Yajirabu plopped himself down to sit, looking around at all the gold he was forbidden to touch. It was the most unfair experience of his young monkey life.

Frustrated, Yajirabu noticed a small stone and kicked it to vent some anger. There was no rule claiming he couldn't touch a rock, but when the rock hit a pottery jar a cracked it open, his entire body froze in terror.

"What was that?" Trunks quickly asked, having heard the sound of the vase smashing.

Stiffly, Yajirabu shrugged his shoulders, still waiting for the demons from hell to swoop down upon him to exact their revenge, but nothing happened.

Trunks cocked his head at Yajirabu's odd posture, but said nothing and continued on his way.

Carefully crawling away from the jar, Yajirabu continued to watch Trunks search around for the rice cooker, he didn't notice the yellow mist seep from the remains of the pottery. Said yellow mist managed to look surprisingly happy with its new freedom.

Yajirabu suddenly felt his tail grabbed and stretched back before whipping him in the ass. The monkey screeched and ran to Trunks' shoulder.

"Something's there! Something's there!" He screeched, pointing to where he'd been attacked.

Trunks looked, searching for whatever was hiding on them.

There was nothing there.

Frowning, Trunks pulled Yajirabu off his shoulder and placed him on the ground. "There's nothing there, stop being so afraid. We have a job to do." He said, his voice no higher then a whisper because anything more could cause a dangerous echo.

Yajirabu watched helplessly as Trunks walked away, his eyes still scanning the dunes of gold for the rice cooker. The monkey looked back behind him, his tail limp between his legs and ears down as he searched for the ghostly thing that was after him before running to catch up, not wanting to be left behind.

Before he could make it very far, Yajirabu felt himself picked up and flew ten feet off the ground before being cruelly dropped on his face.

Yajirabu looked up and saw the strange yellow cloud, looking down at him curiously.

Screaming, he ran and tackled Trunks to the ground, screeching for protection from the spirit and fighting to make Trunks look and acknowledge it.

"Yajirabu, stop it! Are you out of your mind!" Trunks screamed, fighting and kicking on the ground to try and get his insane friend off of him. Yajirabu had to grab his face and force him to look up. A look of understanding flickered in Trunks' eyes when he saw the cloud, cowering behind a pile of coins, away from the monkey's screeching.

Trunks squinted to be sure he was seeing right. "Is... Is that a Flying Nimbus?" He asked himself.

Trunks got to his knees, Yajirabu was hiding in his vest once more. He offered the cloud his hand. From the legends he'd heard, the Flying Nimbus' were supposed to be very emotional entities.

"You can come out," He said softly, trying to appear as non-threatening as possible. "I'm not going to hurt you."

The yellow cloud hovered out from its hiding place, slowly, looking at the hand that was offered to it before approaching.

"Hi, I'm Trunks." Trunks placed his hand on top of the cloud, as if to pet it, surprised when his hand didn't go straight through it. The legend also said that only someone pure of heart could touch it or ride on it, and he was far from pure. He was a thief!

Before Trunks could say anything more, Yajirabu bared his fist at the cloud and screamed at it.

"Yajirabu!" Trunks scolded, and the cloud, slumping over and looking hurt, tried to float away.

"No, wait!" Trunks cried, and the cloud turned, and Trunks thought it was looking at him somehow. "Could you help us, please?"

The cloud pointed at itself before letting out a jump for joy and circling Trunks appreciatively. Eager to have something to do after years and years of being stuck with nothing but the walls of his jar for company.

Trunks laughed at its playfulness. "We're trying to find a rice cooker, whatever that is, do you know where we can find it?"

Nimbus, somehow managing to look excited as it turned its cloud body into an arrow, pointed the way and flew off.

"He knows where it is!" Yelled Trunks happily, taking off after him, and Yajirabu only had enough time to hold on for the ride before he could fall off his shoulder.

***

Nimbus led Trunks through passageways and small cracks in the walls for what seemed like hours. Eventually, they left the area that had any treasure in it at all, to which Trunks was grateful, because that meant he didn't have to keep such a close eye on Yajirabu to make sure he didn't touch anything.

Finally, they came upon a doorway and Trunks stepped through. Inside was another sight to behold. An underground lake.

Trunks took a look at his reflection in the clear water. "Wow," He breathed, dipping his hand in and surprised at how cold it felt. He took a sip, and it was the best tasting water he'd ever had.

Nimbus flew up to him and turning himself into an arrow again, pointed towards the centre of the lake. Trunks looked up to see a steep stone hill, a light coming in from a hole in the ceiling of the cave surrounded something on the very top.

"Is that where it is?" Asked Trunks.

The end tip of the Nimbus cloud moved up and down. It was nodding.

Trunks looked up, wondering if there was anyway he could make it there without needing to take a swim in the cold water. Yajirabu jumped off his shoulder and stuck a toe in it and shivered before backing away.

Trunks did a half circle around the lake before noticing a path of rocks, leading towards the stone hill.

"Yes!" He said, jumping from one to the other with the grace of a cat before finally making it to his destination.

He noticed there were stairs carved into the rock when he made it to the little island with the stone hill, and those stairs where framed with small spikes that reminded him of a snake. "This is going to be too easy." Trunks said, taking the first step. He immediately dropped to his knees.

There was such a pressure around his body! He didn't know what it was but it felt as though he were ten times heavier than normal. Gritting his teeth, Trunks got to his feet and continued up the steps, using his hands to help him every now and again.

Back on the other side of the lake, Yajirabu crossed his arms and plopped himself down to wait, looking bored and unhappy, he turned to look at his strange and now bare surroundings.

By the entrance, a stone monkey Oozaru statue sat, holding the largest ruby he'd ever seen. Yajirabu's eyes sparkled, and without even realizing it, he began to creep forward.

The ruby sat there, taunting him into taking it. It had to be at least three times the size of Mr. Satan’s head, and he just knew that if he could take it and get out with it, Trunks would be sure to thank him because a ruby like that would support them for at least a decade. They would never have to worry about being hungry again.

***

On the stairs, Trunks was halfway to his goal, taking care not to slip while going as quickly as he possibly could. The stairs were steep, he felt heavy and tired, and he almost fell.

***

Nimbus looked around himself, noticing that the cruel monkey was nowhere in sight. The cloud began to panic when he noticed that said monkey was heading towards the ruby. The final test to prove if the Diamond in the Rough was truly capable of holding off his greed.

Nimbus immediately flew and blocked Yajirabu's way, but the fat monkey walked around, and so Nimbus had to grab him by the tail and hold him back just as his tiny hands reached out to take his prize.

***

After finally making it to the top, a breath of relief forced itself out of Trunks' throat when he felt the weight taken off him. Trunks took a few breaths to steady himself before looking at the stand. He found the rice cooker. It looked so innocent and simple, just sitting there.

Half afraid that it was booby trapped, Trunks, with the most extreme care, placed his hands around it and lifted it from its pedestal.

He let out the breath he'd been holding. "This is it?" He asked himself. "This is what that old man wanted us to--"

Trunks turned, and he paled when he noticed what Yajirabu and Nimbus were doing.

"Yajirabu! No!" Trunks screamed, just as the monkey finally broke free and took the ruby into his hair arms.

Instantly, there was a rumble throughout the cave.

"INFIDELS!"

The hair on Yajirabu's neck rose, and Trunks looked around, trying to determine where the voice was coming from.

"You have touched the forbidden treasure!"

Yajirabu tried placing the ruby as innocently as possible back on the monkey shrine, but as soon as he did, it all melted into a pool of lava, and he screamed.

"Now you shall never again see the light of day!"

The spot where only seconds earlier had Trunks removed the rice cooker erupted in flames, and despite the weight on him he ran down the steps to get away as fast as he could. Before he could get far the stairs melted beneath his feet into a ramp, and Trunks slid down faster and faster until he was flung into the air only to see that the sparkling lake he'd drank from earlier had turned into a lake of hot lava.

Trunks clawed at the air as he fell, but was caught by Nimbus before he could reach his death. "Thanks Nimbus." He breathed, his heart pounding with adrenalin.

Before leaving the cavern, Nimbus circled the room.

"There's Yajirabu!" Trunks pointed. The monkey was flailing his arms and screaming for help on top of a boulder, watching as all the other boulders around him exploded with the heat.

Nimbus swooped in and Trunks reached out. Yajirabu latched on for the ride and watched his erupt into nothingness. He promptly fainted.

Trunks shook his head, but it wasn't in a fond way, he had bigger things to worry about, and so he held on for the ride out.

As if sensing his apparent escape, the lava collected itself into a giant snake-like creature, it hissed and glowed ferociously and gave chase. Yajirabu woke up just in time to see the massive snake wave coming for them, and he screeched in terror and held tightly around Trunks' neck. Trunks didn't bother looking behind him, he could tell it was bad without needing to see it.

The trip through the cave of wonders was quicker now that they had flying transport, and Trunks and Yajirabu found themselves back in the treasure room. Yajirabu just about cried when he saw the ruin that the lava snake was causing to all the mountains of gold and jewels, destroying everything it touched. He greedily wanted to go down and scoop up a handful to save, but knew that Trunks would never allow it.

Up ahead, Trunks could see a wall crumble away and the stairway behind it do the same. A hole at the top that filtered in the starlight and led to the safety of outside.

"We're almost there!" He called, and a large boulder fell from the sky, flinging Trunks and Yajirabu from the Nimbus, who fell to a piece of land untouched by the lava snake, disoriented.

Trunks caught himself on a piece of the stairway that hadn't broken off. He tried using his foot for leverage but more of the stairway broke off and he struggled to pull himself up with his hands. Above, he could see the old man.

"Help me out!" He called.

"Throw me the rice cooker!"

"I can't hold on! Give me your hand!"

"First give me the rice cooker!"

Unable to argue with the insane old man, Trunks reached back to where he had the cooker tide to his belt and handed the heavy thing over.

The old man snatched it and held it above his head. "It's mine! At last!" He screamed. Laughing triumphantly, he put the rice cooker in one of his larger pockets.

Looking down, he can see the monkey helping the boy out using his cane, kicking the animal out of the way, and the old man took a hold of Trunks' wrist.

"What are you doing?!" Trunks yelled, struggling to get away from the man while fighting not to fall.

"Giving you your reward!" And he pulled out a crooked dagger, his voice changing. "Your eternal reward!"

Trunks' eyes were wide when he saw that the man intended to kill him, but just before he could bring the blade down on him, Yajirabu climbed up his arm and sunk his teeth into his hand.

The old man screamed and dropped Trunks, throwing Yajirabu in after him furiously.

Finally coming to, Nimbus looked up and is shocked to see Trunks falling. Flying quickly, he makes it just in time to catch both him and the monkey before they hit the ground.

Screaming furiously, the Cave of Wonders roared and shaked until he slams his mouth shut and is once again nothing more then a quiet clump of sand in the desert.

When the wind died down, Vegeta was on his knees. Laughing, he removed the fake beard from his face. "It's mine! Finally!" He said, searching his pockets for his prize.

Only it wasn't there.

"Where is it?" Vegeta searched himself, his spirits sinking when he found it was gone. "No... NO!!!"

***

Goku opened the door to his son's room, intending on having a nice talk with him about all the suitors he'd been turning away. It had occurred to him that perhaps he was being unfair to force him to choose a husband so quickly, and maybe if he put some effort into it he could afford his only son some more time to choose.

Goku quickly forgot what he was about to say when he noticed that Gohan was on his bed, facing away from him and hugging Icarus tightly, sniffling as though he just finished crying.

He took a step forward. "Gohan?" He asked, taking a seat next to him and putting his hand on his back. "What's wrong?"

Gohan brought his face up and hugged his father for the first time since he'd been told he had to marry, and Goku gratefully held him in return.

"Vegeta did something awful, dad."

Running his fingers through his son's hair, Goku wasn't sure what it was Vegeta could be capable of doing that would upset Gohan like this, but he knew to listen. "Tell me everything."

To Be Continued..................

Sorry it took so long to get this out, I'll try to keep updates more frequent from now on

Thank you BballAnimeLover89 for the review, but sorry, Vegeta's not going to do that to Trunks, his interests will be in Gohan. Herve and I are trying to DBZ-ify the story while staying true to the cartoon as much as possible
