Chapter 6 "Cliffs of Insanity"
The morning dawned fair and bright and the crew of weary travelers raised themselves from the floor of the small vessel and took in their surroundings.
Wufei raised his hand to cover his eyes and stared back the way they had come. He shook his head. "Hey look, he's almost on top of us." Wufei said as he pointed to the large ship boring down on them rapidly. "I wonder if he's using the same wind we're using?"
Quatre gave Wufei a withering look. "With the amount of wind that's been flapping from your lips I'm surprised we aren't in Australia [1] by now." he growled under his breath. Quatre moved to stand at the front of the boat and stared ahead. "Well whoever he is he's too late." Quatre pointed. "See there are the Cliffs of Insanity dead ahead."
Huge sheer rock formations rose from the ocean depths to tower above the tiny vessel. Great solid walls of a granite like make up pushing through the waves to form a solid barrier.... Massive columns of solidified sand... Okay I think you get the picture.
"Come on, hurry up, we're almost there." yelled Quatre in triumph, then added for the benefit of those who weren't privy to the education he had received... "That's OZ Country."
Quatre began to move around the boat in a hurry, unheeding that he was rocking the small craft and turning Wufei a little green. "Hoist the thingymummy.... pull down the what's amacallit. Toss over the thingymabob, pass over the dooverlackey."
Wufei rolled his eyes at Trowa who just shook his head. "A dooverlackey?"
Heero sat and smirked at the blonde's obvious ignorance of all things pertaining to the vessel and it's workings.
*Thud..... Crunch*
"I think we've arrived." Trowa stated in a flat tone as the bow of the boat came to a sudden halt as it met with the huge sheer rock formation rising from the ocean depths to tower above the tiny vessel that was now sporting a nice hole right by the water line.
"Shit!" Wufei grabbed the rope that hung down from the cliff and secured the small boat to it to keep it steady. Once done, and with water swirling around his ankles he quickly picked up Heero and secured him around Trowa's waist. He studied the pair who were face to face for a moment and rubbed his chin. It would have to do for now. He pulled on the harness in which he would carry Quatre before setting Trowa on his way up the rope.
Quatre quickly ensconced himself in the harness and prepared for the climb ahead.
With a quick look back over his shoulder at the ship that was almost upon them Wufei took a hold of the thick rope and began to climb up after Trowa and Heero. Quatre chanced to glance back over his shoulder at the still approaching ship. "No normal person can climb these cliffs without
help. Once we reach the top I will cut the rope so he can't follow us."
The four continued up the rope as the ship pulled next to the cliffs and a black clad figure jumped gracefully from the boat to the small ledge and took a firm hold on the rope. The figure began to climb.
Now as you can imagine rope climbing isn't easy at the best of times and four people climbing don't tend to move very fast. Quatre took another look down and his eyes widened in shock. "Damnit! He's gaining on us. Come on you lot, move it."
Wufei grunted. "Nag, nag, nag. That's all you ever do."
Trowa stayed silent, opting to conserve his energy for the rope, not to mention having Heero tied to him and clinging tightly was causing reactions he didn't want to think about and stealing all speech other than moans from his vocabulary.
Finally they reached the top and hauled themselves over the edge. Trowa lay flat on his back with Heero still strapped to him, Wufei followed moments later with an excited Quatre still strapped in the harness to him. Quatre wasted no time. He peered back over the cliff face to see the black lithe figure steadily gaining ground on them, having scaled three quarters of the rope already.
Yanking himself from the harness Quatre ran to the rope and drew his small
dagger. He began to cut the rope. With an annoyed scream he tossed the small
dagger aside and ran back to Wufei who looked at him in surprise. "Give me your sword." he demanded.
"No."
"Huh?"
"No. No one touches the dragons sword."
Quatre threw his arms up in the air in exasperation. "I need to cut the rope and with that piddly little
dagger of mine it's like trying to dig a ten foot deep hole with a tea spoon."
Trowa grunted again and reached into the waistband of his pants. He withdrew a long elegant dagger and handed it over to Quatre who took it with a funny look to the elf/man. Deciding he really didn't want to know how Trowa had managed to fit such a thing into his pants without physical injury he took the object and again began his assault on the rope. Within seconds the rope was cut and disappeared over the edge of the cliff.
Trowa had finally managed to untie Heero from around his waist and recovered enough of his brain cells to crouch with Wufei at the cliff edge. They peered down.
"He has very good arms." Trowa stated.
"The rest of him isn't that bad either from what I can make out." Wufei mused as he studied the black figure clinging to a small ledge.
Quatre joined them at the edge and looked down to see if his plan had succeeded. His eyes opened wide in shock as he saw the man start to climb again... without the rope. "He didn't fall? Now that's incon... inconce... inconceiv..... impossible."
The three stood silent for a moment, spellbound, watching the slender form as it began to climb the rock face, noting the shift of muscles under the black garb, the straining of limbs, the almost feline grace of the movements as he climbed, using nothing but his hands and boot clad feet. Quatre was the first to break the hypnotic daze. "Well whoever he is he has a nice butt, I'll give him that."
The other two turned to stare at the blonde.
Quatre blushed a little. "Err I meant whoever he is he has obviously seen us with the prince so we will have to get rid of him."
Wufei smiled a little and winked at Trowa who just smirked knowingly.
The blonde recovered quickly. "Trowa, you carry Heero. Wufei, you stay here. If he falls..." Quatre inclined his head in the direction of the figure still climbing the walls, "... catch up with us at the OZ frontier. If not then use your sword and then catch up with us at the OZ frontier."
Wufei's eyes glittered as he drew his sword and gave a couple of slashes through the air. "I'll duel him left handed." He stated with a grin.
Quatre rolled his eyes and then ducked as the sword came awfully close to giving him a hair cut... from the neck upwards. "Just remember we are in a hurry."
Wufei pouted. "Aww... But it's the only way I'll have some fun. If I do it right handed It will all be over too quickly. "
Quatre shook his head. " Geese... Have it your own way then."
Trowa lifted the still bound Heero and set off after Quatre on their way to OZ while Wufei waited patiently for the black clothed form to show up.
Wufei took another peek over the edge. The figure didn't seem to be moving all that fast now and if there was one thing Wufei hated it was waiting.... Waiting and feathers but we won't go there.
So to pass the time Wufei began to do some exercises, loosening and toning his muscles, flexing his wrists and preparing both physically and mentally for the duel ahead. After a while though he became bored. he was warmed up and ready but his opponent still hadn't shown up. He went back to the cliff and looked down. "Hello there. Slow going?" he inquired politely.
The black figure paused for a moment and looked up before replying. "I don't mean to be rude. But this really needs all my concentration. It's not as easy as it looks. So if you could refrain from commenting. I'd appreciate it."
"Errr... Sorry." Wufei said and then went and sat on a rock. He pulled out a book of the Encyclopedia of Chinese History... condensed version, and began to read. However he was soon bored again and went back to the cliff edge. Looking down again he spoke. "I don't suppose you could speed it up a little bit could you?"
The figure gazed back. "If you're in such a hurry you could try lowering a rope or tree branch or something."
Wufei thought for a moment. "I suppose I could do that, I still have some rope up here but I don't think you would be accepting to my help as I'm only waiting to kill you."
"I guess that does put a dampener on things." replied the dark one.
Wufei spoke again. "I could promise you that I will not try to kill you until you reach the top."
"That's very comforting to know but I think you will just have to wait."
"But I hate waiting." whined Wufei. "Hey. I could give you my word as a chinaman."
The black figure paused. "No good. I've known too many men from those parts that don't keep their word."
"So is there any way I can get you to trust me?"
"I don't know... you tell me."
Wufei thought again and then smiled. "I know.... I swear on the soul of my departed father Chang WenHui. [2] You will reach the top alive."
Deciding that to risk trusting this Chinese man seemed a better option than having him chatter away all the time the black figure sighed. "Throw me the rope."
Wufei went back to where Quatre had cut the rope and gathered up what was left in his arms. He returned to the edge and tossed it over. "Look out.... Here it....."
*Thunk*
"Ow! Shit!"
"...comes." Wufei looked apologetically over the cliff. "Errr... sorry?"
The figure rubbed his head before taking a firm hold of the rope and beginning his climb once more. Soon he reached the top and dragged himself over the edge. He stood and reached for his sword.
Wufei looked up from the rock he had claimed as his seat and waved his hand. "No wait. We will wait a little until you are ready, otherwise it will not be a fair fight."
The black ensconced man replaced his sword and took a seat on the rock opposite Wufei. "Thank you." he said in a quiet tone.
"My sense of honor and justice will not allow me to fight you until you are recovered from your climb. Not to mention the fact that it would all be over too quickly for my liking."
The black man declined to reply and the pair sat watching each other while preparing themselves both physically and mentafor for the duel ahead.
