Death and His Pilot
Chapter Six
Once Yami had left, Shinigami sat down heavily on the floor with his back to the wall and long legs stretched out before him. With a deep sigh, the immortal held out a hand to Heero and pulled him onto his lap. ‘Never trust a loyal faerie, Heero. They’re treacherous and manipulative, but I’ll protect you from them.’
Shinigami brought his wings around and they were both cocooned in a nest of feathers and leather. Heero found himself leaned against the feathery wing, which was surprisingly soft on the underside. To his amusement, Shinigami began, apparently, to preen the feathers. He pulled a loose one out and handed it to Heero. A hand reached out to play with his hair, the gesture once again reminding Heero of his Duo. ‘Hate to say it, but he was right about one thing. You are beautiful, Heero. Maybe you’re fate’s way of trying to make up for everything they’ve done to me. Hope not though, because it’d mean that fate had a free ticket to do a lot more and a lot worse to balance out such a gift. I wish I could talk to you.’
The heat of being tucked between the immortal and his wing began to lull Heero to sleep. Shinigami smiled, watching the young face clear of all worries until it was completely relaxed. Between them, Heero’s locket warmed just slightly before the same hologram from before appeared on Shinigami’s bent knee, facing him.
‘Don’t worry, I won’t wake him,’ was the first words from his future’s mouth. ‘Believe me, I know how peaceful he looks when he’s asleep. As much as we’d both like to simply watch time for the rest of eternity, it’s time for you to learn his language. Repeat after me.’ “Hello, my name is Shinigami…”
Heero woke to the soft tones of both Duo and Shinigami with their subtle differences due most likely to physical age. He cracked one eye open to see Duo’s hologram speaking slowly to his younger counterpart. It was a moment further before he realized that the language being used was Japanese mixed with Shinigami’s melodious tongue. The winged man repeated the sentence spoken, translating it completely into Japanese. How long had he been asleep?
“Got to love ‘tongues’, even if the faerie invented the language,” Duo said, turning to Heero with a grin. “Enjoy you afternoon, love. If you think I talk a lot in our time, it’s nothing to what I was like now.” ‘Forsaken gods protect you.’ The hologram blinked out with a wink.
“What is ‘tongues’?” Heero asked, looking up to Shinigami’s face but not really expecting an answer. It wasn’t possible to learn an entire language in a couple of hours.
“It is an universal language, of sorts,” the immortal said clearly, making Heero jump while still seated in his lap. “It sets the mind so that words we hear in context remain in place without memorization needed. ‘Tongues’ deals with grammar structures in much the same way as it does words. I guess that my wish came true. Come on, I’ll show you around the school.”
“I can walk,” Heero protested as he was once again lifted into Shinigami’s arms. The shock of the language was already wearing off and he was tired of being carried around like a child.
“But I like to carry you,” Shinigami said, laughing lightly. “That way, there is no chance of us getting separated. Besides, your legs are too short to keep up without running even when we are on the ground, and it is a big school. A good half of the grounds cannot be reached by foot from here either. My family runs this place, the four of us plus Hikari. She will be a headmistress when she gets old enough.”
“The people in the painting are your family?” Heero asked, holding tightly to Shinigami’s tunic as he simply stepped off the ledge to freefall down the column.
“Saw that, did you?” the violet-eyed man asked. Heero nodded. “Yes, they are my family. Of the siblings, I am the youngest, we think. We are unsure exactly how old any of us are. Next of age is my brother Yami. You already met him. Tenshi, my sister, is supposedly older than Yami, but younger than Youkai, who is her mate and our oldest brother. Hikari is the daughter of Tenshi and Youkai.”
“They are siblings and mates?” Heero asked, confused.
“Not exactly. You see, Heero, none of we siblings are actually related by birth.” Shinigami paused in his explanation to greet a small cluster of students who all had gray wings speckled with gold. “We are a very rare race. Before Hikari was born, to use the closest term I can think of, there were only four of us. After our first war, Tenshi and I met at the Faerie Assassination Academy and realized that we were alike in species and adopted each other as siblings. At that time, I was known as ‘Mith,’ a name my former guardian’s had given me, and hers had named her ‘Kinaki.’ Respectively, they mean metal and little light in the Faerie language. Youkai and Yami met much earlier, in military school, and went through the same process before we four met together at the Circle Academies. Tenshi and Youkai were the only two who refused to become brother and sister to each other, but hooked up much later, giving us full circle. Do you understand it now?”
“Yes, I believe so,” Heero said, thinking on his relationship with his comrades. “So there are five of you then? Is this your true form?”
“No,” Shinigami replied, but no further explanation was offered. “Hold on tight. The kids tend to get curious, and quite grabby.”
They were passing through a hallway filled with children, children who mostly sported wings and were as tall if not taller than Heero. The instant they caught sight of Shinigami, and Heero in his arms, they crowded around, tugging at anything they could get their hands on and babbling out questions and demands to the taller man.
“We end up taking in quite a few children of our targets or their victims,” Shinigami explained, shifting Heero to one arm in time to grab hold of his braid in the other and keep it out of the reach of an older kid who had taken to the air. “A good number of them end us as students when they are older, but we only allow these to study self defense until then.”
“What about the ones who don’t become your students?” Heero wondered aloud.
Shinigami smiled as they left the hall. “Over the years, we have gathered together a considerable amount of wealth, easily enough to set those up on their wings until they can set along on their own. Now and then, a child will be adopted through an ally of ours, which we encourage especially for young faerie. Life is much easier for members of that species when one has a clan to belong to rather than just a guild. Heero, in a week, I will be on a mission and I cannot take you with me. It would not be safe, but neither would be allowing you to leave my side without…”
“Without the bond that Duo, your future-self, mentioned,” Heero finished. “Do you know how it is formed?”
“Not exactly, but as I said earlier, Tenshi and Youkai have a similar bond,” Shinigami said. “Perhaps I can ask them. We leave for their abode as soon as the faerie queen’s messenger arrives. The students can take care of themselves for a couple of weeks, especially since many of our graduates still live here when they’re not working.”
“Where are we?” Heero asked. “I know we’re in your school, but are we on a planet, an asteroid, a moon?”
The immortal man grinned. “Do you want to see?” Before Heero could decide yes or no, he discovered the reason for the large hallways as Shinigami spread his wings and left the floor to fly, and to fly fast. Doors and students sped by as Heero clung desperately to his lover’s younger self, remember to breath only once Shinigami had flipped over to fly with his back facing down so that Heero was no longer hanging. He barely had time to notice their passage through the port when Shinigami flared his wings out to stop. “Well, what do you think?”
Heero’s eyes were impossibly wide as he looked, not at the school itself, but where exactly they were: floating in space. Yet somehow he could still breath and remained warm. The pilot glanced down at his hands, clenched around black cloth, and blinked. A soft light was surrounding him completely, and positively leaking from Shinigami like solar flares from the sun. It wrapped around them both, occasionally seeming to play with Heero’s hair in mimicry of the way Shinigami had earlier. He laughed softly at Heero’s expression, a combination of awe and confusion, before turning him around in his arms to face the school. “Look.”
Look Heero did. It took him a moment to spot it, but the ‘fortress’ they’d just come out of was a black sphere that reflected no light and was only visible through finding the gap in the stars beyond. A glint of light caught his eye and he began to notice a nearly countless amount of very familiar structures: colonies. He and Shinigami floated between the school and a thick ring of space colonies.
