Chapter 6: Silver Lining
Heero let another arrow fly. It hit its target dead center for the fifteenth time in a row. He couldn’t believe that he was shooting arrows for practice or that Trowa had talked him into it. More importantly, He couldn’t believe that he admitted to being in love with Lea.
With Janis constantly around, Heero was unable to spend one on one time with her, which meant he couldn’t find out if she loved him. Any meal was eaten in a hurry and chores were constantly found outside and away from Janis. He took his time with fixing the truck just to keep away from Janis’ prying questions. Heero didn’t like talking about his past to anyone. There were some things that not even Quatre knew. Lea had picked up on Heero’s hesitancy in answering Janis’ questions. She started finding things for Janis to do away from Heero.
Tension was becoming thick between Lea and Janis. It was obvious that they had an argument over it. That was when Heero went to Trowa. Although he didn’t help with how to get Janis off Heero’s back with out it inflicting physical harm, Trowa did come up with a plan to win good graces with Lea. The bow and arrows were something he didn’t expect. He trusted Trowa and agreed to the plan. If all went accordingly, Heero would not only go up in Lea’s affections but Janis just might back off him for a bit and the McCart-Carter’s Cattle Ranch would loose a little wind in their sails.
Heero retrieved his arrow with a smirk. ‘It’s about time something worked out. Three more days…’ He returned to his marker which was about a hundred yards away from the target, loaded his bow, took aim and let the arrow fly. ‘Sixteen…’
A high pitch whistle stopped Heero from getting the arrow. Lea stood behind him with a grin from ear to ear. “That’s amazing! You did that twice in a row!”
“No,” Heero said blushing. He didn’t even hear her walk up. “It’s the sixteenth time.” He didn’t wait to see the words register with her. He went for the arrow and returned to find Lea standing at his marker. She had picked up the bow and was fishing through the arrows. “Ms. Lea, what are you doing?”
Lea looked up and smiled innocently, “I’d like for you to show me how to shoot an arrow.” She rolled her eyes when he glanced back at the target. “I know I can’t hit that but I can try to get close. Come on. Show me!”
Heero’s resistance melted when tested against Lea’s enthusiasm. He stood behind her wondering how to position her without touching. ‘She wouldn’t be surprised if you had to. Nothing out of bounds and you’ll be fine.’ With a deep breath to settle his nerves, Heero placed his hands on her hips and turned her slightly. She was smaller than he thought. The loose sweaters she had been wearing were hiding her figure. He wondered what else she might be hiding, then forced himself to focus on the lesson.
“Bring your left foot up a couple of inches.” The wind blew her light vanilla scent his way. He suppressed the urge to lean closer. “Good. Notch the arrow.” He corrected her arms with light and quick movements as to not have his arms around her for too long. The intense look of concentration on her face made Heero pause. It was close to the one she had when he met Damien McCart, Robert Carter, and Alistair. ‘Couldn’t blame her if she was thinking about shooting them.’ “Fire when ready.”
The words were barely out of his mouth when Lea let go. The arrow flew a couple of yards before landing in the ground. No one saw it because the string on the bow had snagged Lea’s elbow. She tossed the bow aside grabbing her elbow and trying her best not to yell out loud. She didn’t want to alert Uncle Janis.
Heero immediately reacted without thinking. He took her hurt arm, forced her other hand out of the way, pushed up the sleeve and massaged the injured area. Her skin felt incredibly soft and slightly chilled in the cool air. The vanilla scent was stronger with Lea so close to him. ‘Employer… Off limits!’ He glanced away from her arm to see her staring at him. She had that look he had seen dozens of times before. He didn’t have a name for it before his talk with Trowa but he did now.
Desire.
She eyed his lips as a playful grin graced her own. Slowly her gaze traveled to his eyes. Her playful grin turned a little mischievous. Her gaze became more heated as she eyed his hair. He wondered just what was going through her mind to make her smile like that. That thought was quickly followed with him wishing she would tell him. Or even better – show him.
Lea’s eyes widened as she realized he was watching her. Her cheeks flushed and she looked away. She was fighting her feelings for him. Now it was obvious to Heero. She, too, felt there would be bad consequences to face if …
“Damn it all to hell,” Heero whispered.
He wrapped his arm around her, placed her injured arm around his neck and kissed her. Lea stiffened and started to push away but relaxed. Her warm soft lips responded to his demanding tongue, parting and giving him total access. She tasted like peppermints, smelt like vanilla and felt like heaven.
Heero’s hands slowly traveled up her sides, thumbs following the subtle curves of her breasts through her sweater. He inwardly cursed the fabrics for being in his way. He coaxed her tongue to follow his back into his mouth. Once there, he deepened the kiss. He sucked and licked her like he was making love to her mouth. Lea squirmed, nails digging into his scalp and sweater. Her faint moans and constantly wiggling hips were driving him crazy. She was rubbing against his hardening arousal. He stilled her hips with one hand. The other cupped her head tilting it to give him a better angle. He had no intention of loosing control. Another scent was slowly gaining strength amongst the vanilla and peppermint. It was the unmistakable scent of arousal, her arousal. The pure musky scent set fire to his blood. ‘Control it, soldier! It’s working! Just a little…’
“Lea?!?”
There were two things that both Heero and Lea were grateful for. The first was their location, which was in a clearing that was behind the barn and workshop with a good amount of trees blocking any view of the clearing. The second was how distant Janis’s voice was. Heero, however, wasn’t happy for the interruption. He stopped the kiss but didn’t let go of Lea. He was hoping it was his imagination. Janis’ voice called out, louder and with a little worry. Heero sighed and dropped his arms.
To his surprise, Lea didn’t leave. She snuggled closer to him hiding her face in his chest. “Go away, Uncle,” Lea grumbled at Janis’ booming voice. When Janis called again, she sighed, cupped Heero’s face in her hands and said with an impish smile, “To be continued.” With that, Lea headed for Janis. “I’m moving as fast as I can, Uncle Janis,” she snapped at Janis’ impatient voice.
Heero’s world froze for a second. Lea wasn’t upset or remorseful as he expected her to be. She had surrendered to his kiss, even said that it wasn’t over! Heero smiled. At least one part of the plan was working perfectly. There was three more days before the rest of the pieces fell into place. He notched another arrow and let it go. ‘Seventeen…’

Three day’s later…
Pramjeet stared at Trowa wondering what had come over him. They were in their car driving to Lea’s house. Normally, the beauty of the autumn country side would have her full attention but the broad smile on Trowa’s face couldn’t be ignored. Sure, she had seen him smile like that before but there was something wicked about it. “Tro?” she asked when she couldn’t take it any more.
Trowa blinked, at least the visible eye did, and his smile lost the mischievous flare. He glanced at her, “Yes?”
“What’s going on?”
Again he blinked, genuinely confused. “We are going to Lea’s house to help her with packing her supplies and then go to the fair,” he said as if he was debriefing her for some military action. “Why?”
Pramjeet frowned, “Don’t be all covert ops on me, Trowa Barton. You are up to something and I want to know what it is.”
Trowa smiled innocently and said in a most charming voice, “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Beloved.” He sounded and even looked sincere. But that smile… She had seen it a few times before when something impossible was going to happen.
Pramjeet sighed, “Fine.” Trowa was going to act coy. She would have to wait and see what it was he had up his sleeve. That was something Pramjeet hated: waiting.

“Come on, Lea. Be sensible!” Janis boomed. He followed Lea out of the house, down the porch stairs and to the camper which Heero was hitching to the back of the truck. “That’s three nights alone. If they find out…”
Lea whirled on Janis, “If they find out, then they will deal with the cops patrolling the area. Rodecker’s given me his word that security will be tripled and …”
“They can still get by all that! You know it as well as I do!” Janis grabbed Lea by the shoulders, pleading, “Please take someone with you. Can’t Celeste or Umeko or even Trowa’s girlfriend stay with you?”
Lea sighed looking down at her boots. Janis wouldn’t be satisfied until she was as safe as Fort Knox on Earth or worse – returning to the house each and every night. It was impractical for her to return because it would cost too much in money and energy. If the beefed up security didn’t quench Janis’ worried mind then what would? She was about to give in when a wonderful thought popped into her head.
“Heero can stay with me.”
Janis looked like he had been told an extra head was popping out of his forehead. “What!?! No!”
She glared at him, placing her hands on her slender waist. “And why not? He’s going to need to be close to the fair. He’s in the archery contest. His part won’t even be until the last day!” Janis opened his mouth but Lea cut him off. “Besides I can use his help with setting up and delivering the bulk items to the customers.”
Janis sighed in defeat. “There’s no one else you want to stay with you?”
“Everyone else is busy and,” she paused, looking sheepish, “I’m a little too old to have you shadowing me all the time.”
“Yeah,” Janis returned the sheepish look with one of his own. It was short lived. “But Heero?” The both of them glanced at Heero. He was going over the connections between the truck and the camper. “I’m still not settled on him.”
“You can’t be serious!” Lea gasped. “He’s been an absolute godsend. He’s even put up with you and your excessive attitude. That’s right, mister. Excessive.”
“Ok. So, I’ve gone a little overboard.” Lea rolled her eyes. Janis’ voice became very serious, “You can’t burn me at the stake, young lady. I’ve got a damn good reason to be over protective. It’s just… He seems a little too robotic.”
The kiss Lea and Heero shared flashed through her mind. Her temperature flared a little making the sweater she was wearing a little uncomfortable. And as if that wasn’t enough, Heero squatted down by the tail light of the truck making his butt right in plain sight. She couldn’t hide the smile that fought for existence. “He’s not robotic, Uncle, just very private.”
“Uh-huh,” Janis said, clearly reading the smile. They stood there in silence for a few seconds. Lea had that mesmerized look she had had several times before. Each occurrence was when Heero was near. Janis chuckled softly realizing he was fighting a lost battle. He looked back at the camper to find Heero satisfied with the work he had done. “He had better be a gentleman the whole entire time, Lea,” he announced in a loud voice. “If he isn’t, he answers to me!” Janis stormed off before Lea could get a word in.

To say that Heero was shocked would be an understatement. When he had heard Lea was going to stay at the fair grounds, he was set to stay with her as long as he could before returning to the house. He was of the same opinion as Janis about someone staying with her. He, too, was worried about the murderers finding her.
However, Heero never expected her to choose him and have Janis agree. Oh, he had heard Janis’ announcement and was floored when Janis approached him. “I’ll go pack,” he said flatly. The little voice was throwing a huge party that drowned out any complaints logic had.
“Don’t think this gets you off the hook, young man,” Janis called after Heero. “And don’t get any funny ideas either!”
Heero took a sigh of relief when he entered his room. For a second, he thought Janis would follow him with a list of what-not-to-do’s. He busied himself with packing, trying to keep the fact he would be alone with Lea for three nights out of his head. His hormones got the better of him. Heero wanted very badly to finish the kiss he gave Lea. She was so close to experiencing the full effect when they were interrupted. Heero was upset but he knew there would be another chance. Lea had said there would be.
‘This could be it! I could tell her everything, too. Everything… the whole truth. She’d understand. She wouldn’t push you away either…’ Heero’s pulse was racing with that last thought. Heero could count on one hand all the times he had been genuinely scared. None of them had ever brought him to the level of fear he felt at that moment. ‘She won’t…’
A knock on his door brought Heero out of his thoughts. Leaning against the door frame was Janis. He looked like Relena did whenever she had to be the bearer of bad news. Out of habit, Heero snapped to attention, “Yes, sir?”
“Ease up, man.” Janis sauntered in looking guilty of something. Heero guessed Lea had said something to him. “I ain’t here to let in on you. I… um. Are you any good at archery?”
Heero’s mouth dropped, “Excuse me?”
Janis smiled, clearly pleased with Heero’s confused look. “Are you any good at archery?” he repeated slowly. “The M.C.C. has won the crown for the past five years. Come to think about it, that’s when Alistair had joined their group. He’s been carrying them ever since. All you need is a set of near perfect scores in one of the three disciplines to win.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Heero said after a few moments of silence. He didn’t want to be blunt but he couldn’t help it. Janis had NEVER just wanted to talk to Heero. There had to be a hidden agenda.
Janis shrugged and plopped onto the bed next to Heero’s bag. Heero suppressed the urge to toss him off the bed. “I don’t want to see Lea’s House Ribbon be on the Loser’s Board.” Heero’s frown darkened. Janis was too wrapped up in thought to notice. “It was worn by her father who was the best archer Mead Colony had ever seen.” Janis’ eyes shown with great pride as he paused for a few seconds to reflect. “Lea was seven years old when she tied the ribbon on her father’s arm for the first time. You would have though she had flown to the moon and back all by herself.” He chuckled softly, “That year, Patrick had a perfect game and the other knights won in their fields.” Janis became serious, pinning Heero with an icy glare, “The Zikamo Knights had never lost. Ever. They retired on a ten year wining streak. You understand?”
“Yes and no,” Heero said hesitantly. His confusion was growing. Janis wanted him to make sure his group won. Fine. No problem. But Lea’s ribbon was another issue. “I don’t have Lea’s House Ribbon.”
Janis stood up with an audible sigh. He gave Heero a warning glare, “You will.”
Heero watched in silent shock as Janis walked out of the room. Suddenly, the fear Heero had felt before returned in greater strength. Heero had no idea who the third person on his team was. Trowa was the only team member he knew. ‘Would the third person be able to contend? Trowa wouldn’t select someone who couldn’t, would he?’ Heero’s stomach felt like it was going to twist itself into knots. He couldn’t function, just stood there staring at his bag with a blank look.
‘Snap out of it!’ Logic demanded. ‘You can get a perfect score anytime you want. Trowa’s not as good but he’s pretty damn close. Janis said you just need to ace one discipline. The crown’s in the bag!’
The little voice remained blissfully silent as Heero zipped up his bag and confidently marched out of his room.

Janis had wisely chosen to ride with Trowa when he and his girlfriend, Pramjeet, arrived. Heero wanted to ask Trowa who he had picked for the third person but Janis, Pramjeet and Lea were too eager to get on the road. Lea still had to set up her booth and they wanted to get it done before the opening ceremonies. Once packed and on the road, Lea figured it was now or never for her to ask about the kiss.
“Where did you learn how to kiss like that?” she asked calmly. Heero glanced at her a couple of times and his face paled a shade. It was rare to make him nervous. She wasn’t about to let him off easy. She continued to prod, “It was like … um…”
“Making love.” Heero was staring at the road as if it would give him the words he was so desperately searching for. “It’s a part of the Kama Sutra,” he started slowly after a few seconds of silence. “There are certain points in the mouth that can be simulated to act like making love. If done correctly, the receiver of the kiss will climax. You would have if I was able to finish.” There was a twang of anger in the last few words.
“Whoa…” Lea whispered. ‘Who would have ever thought that something like that was possible!’ “And you just learned this from a book?”
“No.” The words were gathering in his throat. It almost felt like he couldn’t talk. Fear was creeping up on him again. ‘Twice in one day?’
Heero was now chilling over, which meant he wanted to not talk about it. Lea was practically itching to know more but she didn’t want Heero to withdraw from her. “It’s ok,” she soothed. ‘Better to have him trust you than not.’ “You don’t have to tell me.”
“I want to,” he admitted in a whisper. He looked like he was about to confess to murder. Lea waited patiently as Heero tried several times to speak. “Quatre didn’t want to at first. He was too embarrassed. Said something about it being forbidden.” Heero sighed, deep in thought, “I didn’t realize just how forbidden it was until he taught me.”
Lea sat up straight in her seat, “He?”
“Yes,” he said a bit too calmly for Lea. Heero showed no signs of lying. “He had the talent. I wanted to learn. There was no other reason.”
Lea’s look of shock didn’t fade for a long time. She could imagine Heero doing a lot of things but not kissing a man. To top it off, he sounded like it was some lesson one would take in school and this Quatre person was the professor.
Heero waited silently for her shock to dissipate. It was to be expected. His stomach was knotting up. ‘Would she be like this about everything else?’
“Will you show me again?” she asked in a meek voice. Lea eyed him, hopeful for a positive answer.
Heero smirked, “As you wish, Ms. Lea.” His stomach settled down a little and he added quickly, “There are some things about me, about my past, you might not like.”
Lea laughed. It caught Heero by surprise. “Everyone’s got their skeletons, Heero. No one’s perfect.” She placed her hand on his knee. His muscles twitched before he could catch himself. The warmth of her hand felt good. “I’m glad you find me worthy enough to say anything at all.”
He placed his hand on hers, resisting the urge to move it up his thigh, “You are more than worthy, Ms. Lea. It is I who may not be.”
There was such sadness in his voice that Lea stared at him. Heero remained silent, focusing on the road. Neither of them had words for the sympathy or sorrow they felt. Instead, their hands remained together in silent comfort.
