A cool breeze stirred the sleeping boy as he yawned and stretched in his comfortable place on the tent floor. He rubbed his eyes wearily before sitting up and looking for the man he’s been traveling with. He found Him sitting in front of the fire with His back turned to him. In a calming voice, Vegeta spoke to him without looking at him. “The sun is up, but it’s still morning. There’s some food beside you if you’re hungry and being around you for the past few days, I know you are. As soon as you’re ready, we’ll head out.” He threw a log on the fire and continued to stare ahead.
Kakarot looked at the food beside him and didn’t think twice before eating it with much gusto. He didn’t eat all that much the day before, so his stomach felt like it was about to consume itself if food didn’t get in it soon. After that, he stood and stretched again before sitting beside Vegeta and wrapping his arms around his knees. “How’s the weather?”
Vegeta continued to stare at the fire when He spoke. “The snow finally let up, but the cold is as brutal as ever. You might want to cover yourself more the higher we go. In fact,” He reached over to grab something beside Him and handed it to Kakarot. “I brought you a coat and another blanket. They should keep you warm until we make it out of the mountains. Today, I expect fewer stops since I let you sleep in.”
Kakarot mechanically took the garments as He looked at the man in shock. “H-How did you get these? Did you…go back to the village?” There was no way this man went all the way back down the mountain and hiked the rest of the way to the village and back. It took them the whole day to get them where they were now. How did He manage to go back to the village while keeping him warm? Vegeta merely nodded as He continued to watch the fire with a blank stare. As if the fire was more interesting than their conversation. Kakarot studied the man hard. Was he wrong? “Then, how did I not freeze?”
“I wasn’t gone long.” Vegeta answered simply.
Uncertainty overcame Kakarot’s features. “What? Then…how did you get there and back so quickly?”
Vegeta sighed, as if He were expecting this conversation. “I have different means of transportation other than your mortal ways.”
Kakarot had no idea what that meant. Why couldn’t the man just tell him what He was? It would probably spare him from asking a lot of questions later and he wouldn’t have to lose any sleep over it. However, if he asked, he knew he would get a ‘ask again later.’ So, instead, he sighed in annoyance and accepted the answer. “Alright, fine. You can keep your identity a secret from me a while longer, but sooner or later I will find out what You are.” With that, he stood and began to get his things together and bundled up.
Staring at the fire in blank amusement, Vegeta smirked at the other’s words and stood to do the same.
When they exited the fabric home, Kakarot couldn’t help but gawk at the scenery before him. He didn’t realize they were such a long way up, he could barely see the village they left the day before. It seemed to be further away than he thought. Vegeta didn’t mention the wind hadn’t let up either as a gusty breeze blew and caused him to shiver. He gripped the coat tighter around himself and wrapped the blanket around himself as well. He turned to see what Vegeta was doing and noticed that He already had the tent folded up and put away. Kakarot gave Him a sideways glance. The man sure was quick at everything He did. He didn’t notice Him walking with the horse until He came up to him. “Oh, I see the horse survived.” He petted the horse’s nose as Vegeta patted its side.
“Yes. I saw to it that it stayed warm as well. Wouldn’t do to have it die on us before we made it down.” He held the reins in His hand as He fluidly got up on the tall animal and waited for Kakarot to do the same.
However, Kakarot was in awe in how much the man did overnight. “What? You mean to tell me that You went to get warmer garments for me…while keeping me AND the horse warm?” He stared at the other in surprise.
Vegeta narrowed His eyes at the boy before answering. “Yes.”
Kakarot was at a loss for words. Just how many more surprises were there to this man? “So…You didn’t sleep at all?”
Vegeta held the reins tighter. “I don’t sleep. Now, get on the horse so that we may go.”
Kakarot tuned out the last sentence. “What?! What do You mean You don’t sleep?! Everyone sleeps!”
Vegeta turned His attention to the path ahead. “Not me. Hurry up now before the path is covered by snow. It won’t stay like this all day you know.”
Kakarot slumped his shoulders in defeat before doing as the other said. Once again, it took him a couple tries to get on the horse, but at least he didn’t need the other’s help this time before he finally got on it.
After what seemed like a few hours, Kakarot had a question that was beating at the back of his skull. How on Earth did the man manage to keep the horse warm? Did He…lay with it as well? Kakarot scrutinized the other out of the corner of his eye before facing ahead. How did He keep him warm as well AND get him more garments? The man was an enigma. If he thought anymore on it, he was sure to lose his mind. He sighed at the impossibility of it all. How can a man like this exist? What was His purpose here? He said He was forced into being with him, to go to the war…it seemed like He didn’t have a choice in anything He did. He doesn’t get to choose His path in life. Then what about his? Why must he be forced to be with Him? Although, He did say he would have a choice. When will this choice be made? This all seemed so…out of place. Then again, he has nothing else going on in his life and he shouldn’t be so quick to judge. After all, maybe this man is trustworthy and mean what He says. Still. He sighed again in his confusion.
Vegeta couldn’t help but voice His own thoughts while watching the other. “You look like you have something on your mind, Kakarot.”
Kakarot stiffened slightly. He hardly ever used his name. “I…was just wondering, how did You keep the horse warm?”
Silence ensued for a while. For a moment, Kakarot thought He was ignoring the question, until He answered. “I used some of my energy.”
Kakarot looked at Him then in somewhat understanding. “Oh, You mean that energy You were talking about before?” Vegeta nodded. “I see.” Kakarot faced ahead again and kept his thoughts to himself. Sure there were other things he wanted to ask, but he knew Vegeta wouldn’t answer them.
“We’re almost at the peak. We can stop there for a moment so you may stretch your legs, then we’ll move on.” Vegeta explained as the horse managed to trot over a couple of rocky places on the path. Kakarot mumbled an okay as he pulled the blanket around him tighter. He was beginning to think maybe Vegeta should’ve brought a couple more blankets and an extra coat. It seemed to get colder the higher they went.
Thirty more minutes went by and they finally made it to the peak. Vegeta hopped off the horse then helped Kakarot down. Kakarot was in awe of the view before him. The clouds seemed more reachable and he couldn’t even see the ground, but he could see more of the horizon. The sun was big, but the clouds covered most of its rays, so he could actually look at it. The snow beneath his feet went up to his calves, but he paid that no mind as he walked closer to the edge to get a better view. Vegeta tended to the horse’s hooves to check for any stray pebbles that may have gotten caught in them. Kakarot peered over the edge and saw an endless cliff where jagged rocks fell and lead to nowhere. He never thought he would see something so magnificent, it was quite something.
He turned to Vegeta in his excitement. “Vegeta! Have You seen this view? It’s positively wonderful!” Kakarot exclaimed with a big smile on his face.
Vegeta smirked and turned to the boy. “I knew you’d like it. However, I’ve seen-“ He was interrupted by a cracking sound and noticed that Kakarot sunk an inch. His eyes widened in fear as He held His breath and quickly stood. “Kakarot! Don’t move!”
However, the unexpected movement caught Kakarot off balance and soon fell along with the crumbling ledge. He screamed in terror as he fell. The freezing wind pushed against him as gravity pulled him down. As he fell, he couldn’t believe that this might be it. His life was just becoming more interesting and yet all he’s done is stay in a small village where people hated and feared him. All he wanted was to belong somewhere and have someone trust in him and love him for who he was. His one regret was that his travels with Vegeta were over and he will never know what the man actually was. Fear froze Kakarot’s heart for a brief moment when he saw jagged rock that was coming to meet him at a fast pace. He shut his eyes and waited for the pain before he landed on something solid. He let out another scream at the expected but unexpected impact. However, one thing he noticed right away was the absence of pain. The next thing he noticed was that he was quickly moving upwards instead of down. Afraid to open his eyes, he hung on tightly to whatever had a hold of him. Before he knew it, he landed in something cold and wet and realized that it was snow.
“Kakarot?! Are you alright?!” A gruff panicked voice said to him. He knew that voice, he heard it only moments ago. “Kakarot, please answer me!” Kakarot whimpered in His arms, afraid to move. “Look at me!” He felt warm hands on his face and in his hair. It was comforting, but it wasn’t enough to let his lungs breathe easily.
Slowly, the boy opened his eyes to see the most wonderful sight in the world at that moment. He was honestly glad to see the man again. “Vegeta?” He asked in a petrified squeak.
Vegeta seemed a bit relieved when he spoke. “Yes, Kakarot. Are you hurt?” He asked in a worried tone.
Kakarot was too afraid to let go of Vegeta to check. “I…I don’t think so.” He didn’t even want to look at his body for injuries, he just kept his eyes on the man in front of him.
Deciding to check for him, Vegeta ran and patted His hands all up and down the form below Him and listened for a reaction, but didn’t see any wounds or hear any complaints. “You seem alright. Do you feel any internal pain? How about your head? Feel anything broken?” Vegeta asked quickly, dying to know if the boy was okay.
However, Kakarot’s response was different than what Vegeta was expecting as the boy openly started crying into His chest and held on to Him tighter. Vegeta sat on His knees in shock for a moment before slowly embracing the boy. The reality of what almost happened taking a toll on both of them. After a moment, Vegeta pressed the younger’s head against Him and wrapped an arm around his waist as the boy continued to cry. “It’s alright, Kakarot. You’re fine. I’m here.” He said in a comforting tone while Kakarot’s sobbing quieted some.
The younger’s arms still wrapped tightly around Vegeta’s torso as he sniffled and tried to calm himself. Vegeta rubbed his back in a comforting gesture as Kakarot fell silent. After a while, neither moved in the cold snow; not ever wanting to let go of one another. However, Vegeta knew if they spent any more time where they were, another accident was bound to happen. He pulled back from the younger and held his chin to make the other look into His eyes. “Kakarot, please be more careful. It’s much too soon for you to leave this world, especially with an unfulfilling life. Stay by my side at all times. Understand?” Kakarot couldn’t tell if the man was trying to be kind or cruel, but nodded his head into the warm hand anyway. Vegeta bent down and touched His forehead to Kakarot’s. “I mean it. Don’t stray away from me for any reason.” He said sternly.
“Okay.” Kakarot’s voice broke as he answered softly.
Vegeta pulled back and studied the young form. “Now, can you stand?”
Kakarot looked lost for a moment before placing his hands in Vegeta’s and tried to do just that. He managed to stand on shaky legs, but other than that he didn’t feel anything broken. Kakarot nodded before Vegeta let go of his one hand and held on to the other then lead him back to the horse. After Vegeta helped Kakarot on the animal and pulled Himself up behind him, He looked at the horizon then the sky. “If we hurry, we can make it down the mountain around sunset at the earliest. It might be nightfall by the time we make it.”
Kakarot stared at the horse’s mane with a shaky look. “I don’t care as long as we get down this rock today.” He murmured.
Vegeta studied the boy for a moment then heeled the horse into motion and continued along the snowy path of the deadly rock.

When they neared the bottom, the sun had already set and Kakarot was dozing. Ever since the incident, Vegeta had an arm wrapped around the other the rest of the way. He wasn’t going to let anything else bad happen to His young fated one. He will protect him at all costs, even if it meant sacrificing other humans. They didn’t dare take anymore stops in fear of something else happening. Vegeta felt guilty. He just wanted the boy to get out of that small village and spend time with Him and travel. He wanted him to have experience in life…He wanted him to be happy. Then, a beautiful moment transformed into something horrific. It was sad really. Vegeta breathed a sigh of relief when the horse made a few more careful steps over some rocky terrain and finally landed on flat solid ground; less of a chance of falling through or off of anything down here. Vegeta didn’t hesitate in snapping the reins and getting the horse to sprint the rest of the way to a nearby village.
Kakarot lolled his head back against Vegeta as the horse raced towards civilization. Vegeta briefly touched His face against his. “We’re almost there, Kakarot. You’ll be in a warm bed soon enough.” Vegeta promised as His eyes set on the lights ahead of them.
When they reached the village, Kakarot fell completely asleep as Vegeta let the horse trot through the area. Many people were out and about, even around this hour. However, He easily ignored them and finally made it to an inn. Vegeta jumped off the horse before carefully pulling Kakarot down and carried him inside. When He reached the man in charge, He ordered a room and the man gave Him the key without asking questions. It appeared the man either didn’t care or was just as tired as He was. Vegeta grabbed the key with haste and rushed to their room. When they got there, He gently laid Kakarot on the bed and covered him with the sheet and blanket provided. Kakarot unconsciously snuggled into the fabric and rested. Vegeta smiled with relief at the scene for a moment before rushing out to get their things then sold the horse to a vendor and got His money back on the ridiculous deal to get it in the first place. He also didn’t want to spend the time and money to take care of it, so it was better off with a vendor that would.
When Vegeta returned, He was relieved to see that Kakarot was still asleep. He sighed at the stress of the day and sat in a chair. He didn’t bother getting a room with two beds, mainly because He wanted Kakarot to get some rest and He didn’t need to waste the money on something that wasn’t necessary. He only got a room with two beds before so Kakarot wouldn’t ask questions, but since the truth was already out, what was the point? He closed His eyes a moment before opening them. If He were human, He was sure He’d be exhausted as well.

Well…I was going to wait and have something bad happen in a village that they’ll arrive or leave at but…I felt that this chapter needed something. I guess I’ll have to wait and put in another incident at a later chapter. >.> *sigh*
