Wufei woke slowly and took a shallow breath. The agony was gone but a dull ache remained. He couldn't remember much of the last episode outside of the strong desire for someone to put him out of his misery. And the feeling of Heero's chest pressed to his back and his arms curled protectively around him. He felt a warm hand in his and opened his eyes to find Heero's head resting on the edge of the bed, eyes closed in sleep.
He felt an urge to brush back the messy chocolate bangs from Heero's forehead and squelched it down. He knew how Heero felt and would have given anything to be able to give the man what he wanted. But Wufei couldn't cross that line. He was already selfish enough to take the friendship that was offered. There was a time when he'd considered it.
Two months earlier he'd finally put two and two together where Heero was concerned. He'd pieced together all the sideways glances and subtle brushes of a hand to his shoulder or back. He'd caught on to the soft sighs and tender smiles. And for a moment, he'd longed to accept what he knew would be given.
That's when the past came rushing back, damning him for even considering touching someone so pure as the Japanese Preventer. It hit him like a landslide. And no one did self-recrimination as well as Chang Wufei.
But even with his doubts and self-loathing, a part of him screamed that it wasn't fair. He'd done what he had to, hadn't he? It wasn't like he asked for it. He hadn't been able to stop it. Why couldn't he move passed it and have something special like Quatre and Trowa?
A small voice pointed out that even if Matthews, or Knight, whatever his real name was, even if he hadn't done what he had, Wufei had committed plenty of atrocities outside of that. The one glaring event was his near killing of Heero.
His hand unintentionally tightened in Heero's and blue eyes slid open. He raised up, brows drawing together. “Are you hurting?”
“Huh?”
“You look like you're about to cry.”
Wufei pulled his hand from Heero's and looked away. “I'm fine. What are you doing here anyway?”
“Watching over you.”
He grunted and rolled slowly to his side to face away from Heero. “I don't need you watching over me.”
Heero sighed and put his hand to Wufei's shoulder. “Will you tell me what he did to you?”
“Tried to kill me, apparently,” he muttered.
“No, I mean what happened that made him try to kill you? How do you know him?”
The room was silent for so long Heero thought Wufei had fallen asleep. “I'm not trying to be difficult about this, Heero. It's just not something I like to talk about.”
“Why not?”
He sucked his bottom lip through his teeth and chewed it a moment, eyes staring blankly at the wall. “Haven't you ever had something happen that hurt to talk about?”
Heero thought of a little girl and her dog. “Yeah, but talking can help ease the pain of it after a while.”
He cut his eyes to Heero briefly. “Who did you talk to?”
“Duo.”
Wufei nodded. He guessed he should have known that; the two were best friends, after all. “He wanted to make me his experiment. He said he could turn me into the ultimate killing machine.” He snorted. “I told him the war already had one and didn't really need another.” He looked pointedly to Heero.
It was his turn to snort. “I don't know that I'd go that far.”
Wufei shrugged and looked back to the wall. “He wanted to 'boost my invincibility' as he put it. His plan required replacing several organs with machines, injecting some concoction into my spine and he wanted...” Wufei cut himself off, face flushing.
“What did he want?”
“Me,” he ground out. “He said he'd do all the 'upgrades', make me perfect, and then when the war was over he'd show me how to be the perfect lover,” he spat the word. “Offered to give me a free sample of all he knew.”
Heero was really regretting his promise to Duo not to kill the man. “What happened after that?”
He smiled thinly. “He received very intimate knowledge of what my sword feels like against his crotch.”
Blue eyes widened. “You didn't.”
He shook his head. “Not at the time, but he knew what would happen if he ever came near me again.”
Heero swallowed. “Did he?”
Wufei closed his eyes and slid his hand up to rest over Heero's on his shoulder. “I'm tired.”
Heero took a slow breath. He wanted to force the words out of Wufei. He wanted an excuse to hunt the man down and strangle him to within an inch of his life and then drag him through the galaxy outside of a spacecraft without the privilege of a suit. He wanted to pull Wufei into his arms and ease all his pain away.
“Heero?”
“Hm?”
Moment of silence. “Thanks for watching over me.”
His lips lifted slightly. “Any time.”
Wufei suddenly paled and sucked in a breath. “Heero... call for Sally.”

Duo twisted his fingers as he studied the layout surrounding the location Knight had selected. It was in the middle of nowhere with flat, open fields for miles. Which meant there was nowhere for back up to hide. The email had been sent via wireless connection with the sever somewhere in the L4 region. That didn't necessarily mean that was Knight's location. He had a few underlings spread throughout the Earth sphere. Not that Duo knew who any of them were.
He sat back from his computer and rubbed his face. He hadn't slept at all the night before and was ready to lie down in the middle of his cubicle and take a nap. Life, he mused, totally sucked from time to time; but then, life was better than the alternative. Strong hands fell on his shoulders and rubbed gently before breath whispered over his ear.
“You look like a zombie.”
Violet eyes closed and he tilted his head back slightly. “Couldn't sleep last night.” He opened his eyes. “Damn, it's good to see you.”
Blake smiled. “You, too.”
“How'd you manage to get Une to let you come home?”
He shrugged. “It wasn't that hard, I just told her she was wasting my talents on a task a rookie could do. She agreed and brought me home.” He moved around Duo to lean against his desk and face him. “She also said I am now part of your mission, so fill me in on what you need me to do.”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “Right now there isn't much we can do but wait. Wufei's back in the infirmary with his gut trying to jump out of his body, and no logical reason why. I've got a meeting with Knight tomorrow and that's,” he pointed to the computer screen, “the location.”
Blake studied it and pursed his lips. “That's going to make it difficult to back you up.”
He snorted. “Not difficult, impossible.” He pushed from his desk. “I was gonna go check on Fei, come with me?”
Blake nodded and shoved his hands in his pockets as they walked out of the office. “Why couldn't you sleep last night?”
“Seeing Wufei in so much pain he passed out sorta got to me.”
“And?” Blake prodded.
He sighed and shook his head. “It's just speculation at this point. Once I have the facts I'll let you in on it.”
He studied his lover and then gave up. When Duo didn't want you to know something, you weren't going to know it. Duo ground his teeth as they stepped into Wufei's room. The scene was almost identical to the one from the night before, except Wufei was curled into Heero with his forehead pressed to the Japanese man's chest, and he wasn't screaming. He was breathing shallowly with whimpers and soft sobs, silent tears falling down his face, and his hands were clenched in Heero's shirt.
“Why aren't you doing anything?” Duo demanded of Sally.
“What am I supposed to do?”
“Open him up and see what's wrong.”
She shook her head. “I can't.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Why not?”
“He's too weak right now,” Heero answered in a weary tone. “If she knew what to look for and that it was worth the risk, she would, but...”
Duo's brows drew together. “What are you saying?”
Sally took a breath. “If something doesn't change soon, he may not make it.”
Duo began twisting his fingers again. “It's killing him.”
It wasn't a question but she nodded. “If it continues progressing at this rate, I'd say he has two, maybe three, weeks.”
“But, how can pain kill? It's a symptom, not a cause.”
“Shock to the system, maybe. I don't really know, Duo. But his heart's getting weaker with every episode.”
Wufei slit his eyes open and looked to Duo. “Don't worry about me,” he whispered. “Just make sure you get Knight.”
Duo clenched his jaw. “I promise you, Fei. We'll get him.”
