In some ways it seemed heartless to move on with our plans to build our family while Wufei's life seemed to be falling apart, but he was right about Duo being upset if we put our plans on hold while waiting for him to wake up. Not that there was much for Quatre and me to do at the time.
Ronnie called Quatre when the procedure was done and he called me at work. It would be several weeks before we knew if it had taken and I couldn't quite reach the same level of excitement I heard in Quatre's voice. But I was definitely jumping when Trowa came to find me to tell me we needed to get to the hospital.

“Have you thought about whether you want to know if it's a boy or girl?”
Heero stepped out of his office, cell tucked between his shoulder and ear. “I want to know. It'll make it easier to prepare.”
“This isn't a mission, Heero.”
He laughed softly as he rinsed his coffee cup out in the break room sink and poured a fresh cup. “Of course it is. It's the scariest mission we've ever had.”
“That isn't funny.”
“Who said I was trying to be funny?” He grabbed his lunch from the refrigerator and sat at the table. Normally he'd meet Trowa, Ronnie, Wufei, and Duo in the cafeteria for lunch, but with Duo in the hospital and Wufei out, it seemed less like a break and more like a glaring beacon reminding him of his best friend's current state.
“Do you really think we're ready for this?”
“We've barely started and you're already having second thoughts? I thought you wanted a child as much as I did.”
He raked his hand back through his hair. “I do. That doesn't mean it doesn't make me nervous.”
Quatre chuckled. “The great Heero Yuy, savior of the world as we know it, scared of dirty diapers.”
He laughed softly. “You better believe it.” He glanced over his shoulder as Trowa leaned into the break room. “What's up?”
“I just got off the phone with Wufei. I think we should head to the hospital.”
He nodded. “I need to go, Quatre.”
“All right. I've got a meeting coming up. I'll give you a call when I get out.”
Heero hung up and stood, tossing his barely touched lunch into the trash. “Did you clear it with Une?”
Trowa raised an eyebrow. “I'll give her a call on the way. We still have forty-five minutes before our lunch is over.”

Wufei flipped the channels idly on the TV before turning it off. “There's never anything on worth watching,” he muttered into the phone, receiving a soft laugh.
“Do you ever watch TV at home?”
He rubbed his neck, trying to work out the kinks that had developed from sleeping on the sofa against the wall. “Duo has a few shows he's suckered me into watching over the years.” He glanced to his lover out of the corner of his eyes. “They're no fun if he's not watching them with me, though.”
“I guess not... Do you need anything?”
“No, I'm good.”
“Are you sure?”
Wufei sighed. “Yes, no matter what all of you seem to think, I'm not about to fall apart.”
“No one said-”
“No. You don't have to. You've all made a fine art of letting me know you think I'm about to lose it without saying a word.”
He looked to the side when Duo shifted slightly. “Hold on a second, Trowa.” He crossed to the bed and leaned over, running his fingertips down Duo's arm. “Duo? Can you hear me?”
He sucked in a breath when Duo tossed his head slightly. “I need to go, Trowa. Duo's waking up.” He flipped his phone closed and pressed the button for the nurse.
“Did you need help?”
“Duo's waking up.”
“We'll be right in.”
Moments later, the nurse along with the PCA came into the room. Wufei swallowed back the emotion trying to choke him when Duo began fighting against them, tears leaking from the corners of his eyes. He brushed chestnut bangs from his lover's forehead. “Look at me, Duo. It's all right.”
Slowly, violet eyes focused on him and Wufei tried for a comforting smile. “Stay calm. You've got a feeding tube down your throat so you won't be able to talk.” Duo's brows drew together in confusion and Wufei kissed his forehead. “You were in an accident and you've been unconscious for a little over two weeks.”
“Dr. Finn is on his way.”
Wufei barely paid attention to the nurse. Duo closed his trembling fingers around the hand in his weakly and looked around the room. Soft moans escaped around the tube and he looked back to Wufei, raising a hand to his mouth. Wufei shook his head and took Duo's other hand in his. “Wait for the doctor. He'll be here soon.”
As if on cue, the doctor came in and smiled. “Good to see you awake, Mr. Maxwell. How are you feeling?”
Wufei resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “And how is he supposed to answer with the tube down his throat?”
He gave Wufei a patient smile. “We'll take care of that right now.”
Wufei kept a hold of Duo's hand but looked away as Finn removed the tube, grimacing slightly at the gagging noise that escaped Duo's throat. He looked back when the doctor was done and Duo licked his lips in a vain attempt to wet them. Duo closed his eyes, lips trembling as he sucked in a pained breath.
“H-h-hu...” He swallowed and tried again. “Hu...ur...,” he whispered.
“You're hurting?” Duo nodded and Wufei pressed the switch for the pain medication pump into his lover's hand. “See this button? Whenever it hurts, just press that and it'll give you meds.”
Duo pushed it immediately and slit his eyes open. Wufei grabbed the cup of ice chips, holding one to Duo's lips. “Here. This should help a little.” He ran it across Duo's lips before slipping it into his mouth. Duo let it dissolve on his tongue, eyes never leaving Wufei as the doctor checked his vitals.
“All right, young man, how do you feel?”
“Li... like...” he licked his lips, “shit.”
Wufei couldn't stop a chuckle at the answer. “Do you remember what happened?”
He struggled to think through the fog in his mind and the pain screaming at him to go back to the darkness where no pain could touch him. “A... th-th-th...” He clenched his teeth. “A jet,” he finally managed.
Wufei nodded. “It went down. Remember?”
Duo frowned and looked back to Wufei. He remembered bits and pieces, but it all ran together in a confusing jumble and he wasn't sure what was real. It didn't help that he was in utter agony and it seemed no one was inclined to do anything about it. “No,” he wheezed out and pressed the button again, annoyed when all it did was beep at him.
“It's on a time release,” Finn said softly. “You can only get so much morphine at a time.”
He clenched his eyes shut tightly, tears leaking out of their own accord. He didn't like just lying there while people looked down at him. He tried to sit up, but it only brought a fresh wave of pain and a multitude of hands on him to push him back down.
Something wasn't right, but he couldn't quite figure out what it was. Everything hurt and his mind was running in confusing circles, never allowing him to latch onto any particular thought. The figure beside him looked like Wufei, but his lover wouldn't just stand by and let people hurt him. Why wasn't Wufei helping him?
Unless Wufei wasn't really there. That had happened before. He'd thought he'd seen his lover watching while they... He shook his head. Wufei had been gone on a mission. He hadn't been there. Somehow they had him again. No, he couldn't be so weak he'd let it happen a second time. He began to fight in earnest and only managed to bring sharp pain lacing through his entire body. A sharp cry escaped him and he lashed out at the nearest person.
Wufei jerked back when Duo's hand smacked across his face and he gripped the brunette's arm, pushing it to the bed. “Duo, love, you need to calm down. I know it hurts, but you're only going to make it worse.”
Duo shook his head, confusion growing as he was held down on all sides. “N-n-no!” He tossed his head, trying to break free. “D-damn... it... I h-have th-th-the right... t-to be here! I'm n-n-not...”
Wufei swallowed; panic rising in his chest as he realized what his lover must be remembering and confusing with the present “It's Wufei, Duo. You're safe. No one here is going to hurt you.”
Duo tossed his head, whimpers escaping his lips. He didn't know what was real and what was his own imagination. Had he and Wufei ever been together, or was it some dream he'd made up to fill the loneliness that was his existence. For all he knew, he was still back in OZ's clutches, waiting for his public execution. Maybe the rape had never happened. He cringed and bit his lip. “D-damn ozzies.”
Wufei closed his eyes, pressing his forehead to Duo's shoulder. “I'm not OZ, Duo,” he whispered brokenly. “The war has been over for more than ten years.” Wufei ignored the curious glances from the hospital staff as he fought to bring his lover back to reality.
Strong but gentle hands gripped his upper arms and pulled him from the room after the doctor gave Duo a shot to sedate him. Wufei leaned against the wall and covered his face with his hands.
“It's just the pain and morphine confusing him.”
“I know.” He looked to Heero and Trowa, wondering briefly when they got there. “I know.”
“Did he say anything?” Trowa asked.
He nodded. “He doesn't remember the accident, but he remembered the jet. That's about all we could get out of him before he started fighting again.”
Heero sighed softly. “I know it seems bad, but, Wufei, he woke up and he knew you, right?” The other Asian nodded. “That's a good thing. It's only natural that he's confused. Don't get discouraged.”
Wufei took a breath and closed his eyes. “I know.”
“When was the last time you ate?”
He grunted softly. “Some time yesterday, I think.”
Trowa shook his head and looked to Heero. “I'll take him to the cafeteria and get him something to eat.”
Heero nodded. “I'll stay with Duo.” He returned to the room as Trowa pulled Wufei down the hall and looked to Dr. Finn. “How is he?”
“Settled for now.” He turned to face Heero. “The first time waking is always the hardest.”
“I know, and so does Wufei. All of this is really hard on him.”
The older man smiled softly and put a hand to Heero's shoulder. “No need to explain. I see enough cases like this to understand. Injuries like this hurt the entire family, not just the one in the hospital.”
Heero sat next to the bed and gazed down at his best friend. “I have to be honest, I've been on his side of this scenario far more often than the side I'm on now.” He looked up to the doctor with a rueful smirk. “At the moment, I'm not sure which is worse.”
Finn nodded in sympathy. “I understand. It's hard to sit and wait, unable to do anything.”
Heero's cell rang and he glanced to the caller ID. “Excuse me.” He stepped out of the room. “Hey.”
“Hey, how's Duo?”
“Asleep again. He wasn't up for very long and he was very confused, but Finn said everything is normal.”
“Is Wufei holding up okay?”
He sighed. “As well as can be expected. I think I'll stay here with him tonight. He doesn't need to be alone and now that Duo woke up once, there's no way we'll get Wufei to go home.”
“Is there anything you need?”
“No, I'm going to run home when they get back from the cafeteria to pick some stuff up. How long do you think you'll be at the office?”
Quatre grunted. “I've got a board meeting at three. There's no telling what time I'll get home. I'll give you a call.”
“All right.” His phone beeped and he glanced to the screen. “Une's calling. I'll talk to you later.”
“'Kay.”
He flipped calls. “Yuy.”
“How is Maxwell?”
“Back out again. Trowa took Wufei down to get something to eat.” He leaned against the wall. “Have you heard back from the airline's attorneys yet?”
She huffed. “Yes, and they're groveling like the whipped puppies they are. Maxwell won't have to work for the rest of his life by the time we're through with them.”
Heero only felt the barest hint of grim satisfaction at that. If a miracle didn't happen, there was a good chance Duo couldn't work for the rest of his life. “Good to hear. Keep me posted.”
“I will. If anything changes with Maxwell, let me know. We can't get the full suit going until we know exactly how his injuries going to impact his life.”
“You'll be the first we call.” He hung up and rubbed his face with a feeling that the next few days were going to be long.

“Are you sure that's what he said?” Cindy asked as she leaned over the desk in the nurse's station.
Sean nodded. “He thought we were OZ or something.”
She frowned. “That doesn't make any sense. OZ was disbanded over ten years ago. He would have been a kid during the war.”
He shook his head. “I thought I knew that guy from somewhere. His face was all over the news back during the war. OZ had caught him, but somehow he escaped.” He leaned toward her. “Remember last year when there was that news report about Preventers bringing down some big weapons' ring?” She nodded. “The agent's name was Heero Yuy.”
Her eyes widened and she glanced towards Duo's room. “Isn't that the name of one of their friends?”
“Yeah. How much you wanna bet all of them were Gundam pilots?”
“Patient confidentiality,” a voice whispered from behind Cindy and she jumped, turning to face Dr. Finn. He took in the nurse and PCA with a serious expression. “Whoever they are doesn't concern you. Mr. Yuy's past has come out in the media; there's no reason for the others' pasts to unless they want it. If I hear anything leaked, I'll know where to point fingers, got it?”
Cindy paled slightly. “We weren't planning on talking to anyone. We were just speculating.”
He pursed his lips. “Well, keep your speculations to yourselves and get back to work.” He leaned over the desk. “If they were Gundam pilots, we owe them a debt of gratitude, not more headaches.”
Sean sneered. “I don't owe them squat. It was a Gundam pilot that killed my old man.”
Finn's eyes narrowed as he took in the nurse. “I'm sorry for your loss, but soldiers die in wars; a fact I'm sure your father was well aware of when he enlisted. Those boys have spent the last ten years keeping us from seeing another war. If you have a problem with treating him, I'll move you to another floor until he leaves.”
He frowned. “No, sir. I don't have a problem.”
“Good. Now get back to work.”
Sean watched Finn walk off with a scowl. Cindy bit her lip. “You're not going to do anything, are you?”
He snorted and flipped the file closed. “Of course not. I'll nurse the little shit back to health. Doesn't mean I have to like it, though.”

Lance closed his car door with a sigh and rubbed his neck. A sudden pounce on his back ripped a startled yelp from him and he spun, lips pressing to a thin line. “What the hell are you doing here, Greg?”
“Aw, that's no way to talk to an old flame, is it?”
He snorted. “A cheating, good for nothing old flame. How many STDs do you have now?”
He rolled his eyes. “None, thank you very much.” He pouted his lips and draped his arms over Lance's shoulders. “I won't keep you. I know how your bitch gets testy when you're late.”
He ground his teeth. “His name is Dustin, and he's nowhere near the bitch you are. What do you want?”
Greg slid his hands down Lance's arms. “Fifty bucks and I'm out of your hair. I swear.”
He sighed heavily and pulled out his wallet. “Of all the things I regret in my life, you're at the top.”
Greg laughed softly. “You know you loved our time together.”
He grunted. “We were kids. I'd hoped one day you'd grow up.”
He took the fifty and the opportunity to cop a feel. “Thanks so much, lover.” He waved with a wink and watched Lance storm off toward his apartment. He turned, swirling a set of keys on his forefinger as he left the parking lot. “Pleasure as always, Lance.” He tossed the keys in the air and caught them, a smirk gracing his lips. “Pleasure as always.”
