Lyri half expected Vegeta not to be in his quarters when she returned, but he was at his desk, staring at maps and reading through some paperwork again. He ignored her and she went to place the garment bag she held in the closet.
‘The dress maker said that the others will be done within a day or two and that she’d send them over so I wouldn’t have to pick them up...perks of pretending to be Vegeta’s intended, I guess,’ she thought to herself. She hung up the bag and returned to the living space. Vegeta continued to ignore her, turning off the holographic maps as she walked in.
“Still secretly tracking Frieza?” she asked. He didn’t answer which made her roll her eyes. ‘So he’s ignoring me after our argument this morning?’ she thought to herself. “Speaking of Frieza,” she said, leaning against the wall next to Vegeta’s desk, “Met someone today that just got orders to his ship.”
“Saiyan’s get orders there all the time,” Vegeta said.
“We shouldn’t be sent there at all...” she muttered.
Vegeta was silent, looking like he was lost in thought.
“You ok?” Lyri asked.
“You know this Saiyan?” Vegeta asked, “The one with orders to Frieza’s ship?”
“Not really,” Lyri told him, “He was Kakarot’s teammate. By the time he came around, I was constantly back and forth between here and there.”
Vegeta crossed his arms over his chest, thinking again. “His name?” he finally asked.
“Uh...Nix. Why?” Lyri asked. She watched as Vegeta got up and left without another word. “Ok then. That was odd...” she said to herself. She glanced at the stuff on the desk. She clicked on the hologram of Frieza’s ship. She stared at it intently. “I hope one day someone is strong enough to take you down, Frieza...” she muttered. She clicked off the hologram just as Vegeta walked back in.
“What are you doing?” he asked angrily, quickly walking over to the desk and making sure everything was in order.
“Nothing,” Lyri told him.
Vegeta glared at her. “Don’t go through my things.”
“I didn’t,” she told him.
He continued to glared at her. She glared back and picked up the device that held the hologram of Frieza’s ship. He reached out to take it from her but she held it out of his reach.
“Give that back!” Vegeta snapped, lunging for it.
Lyri moved out of his reach. “Why?” she asked. Vegeta growled and moved to grab it again. She moved again. “Why are you keeping tabs on Frieza?” she asked.
“None of your damn business!” Vegeta yelled. He tackled her causing them both to fall to the ground. The projector rolled out of Lyri’s hand. She tried to reach for it but it was just out of her reach. Vegeta pushed himself off her and grabbed it. Lyri sat up and glared at him.
“Touch my things again,” he started.
“And what? You’ll kill me? Go ahead,” she told him as she stood, “You trust me enough to pretend to be your intended. Why don’t you trust me with this?”
Vegeta set the projector back down on his desk. “Let’s get one thing straight,” he snarled, turning back around to face her, “There are very few people that I trust. You are not one of them. The only reason I chose you is because you are my sister’s protector and it would seem natural that we grew close.” Lyri said nothing, trying to contain the pain that his words caused. He could tell that she tried to hide the pain his words caused. But they were true. He didn't trust her with why he was tracking Frieza. So why did it bother him that his words hurt her? Vegeta’s scouter went off and he left. Lyri wiped her face, refusing to let her emotions get the better of her.
It was late when Vegeta returned. As he walked through the living space, he noticed that Lyri was on the couch, her back facing the room. He continued to the bedroom and got ready for bed. He heard her shift around on the couch. He growled to himself and got into bed. If she wanted to behave like a child, she could but he wasn’t going to beg her to return to his bed. Their argument from earlier played through his mind. Could he come to trust her? She had never given him any reason not to trust her. He heard her shift around again. “Stupid woman...” he muttered.
“Untrusting jerk...” he heard her mutter in response.
Vegeta ignored her. He laid on his back, thinking. He glanced at her as she walked into the room.
“Don’t get the wrong idea. Your couch is uncomfortable as hell. And I’m freezing...” she muttered as she climbed into bed and curled into a ball as far away from him as possible.
He rolled over to face away from her. They were silent and he thought she had gone to sleep.
“Vegeta...” she whispered.
“Hmm?” he answered, wishing she had gone to sleep.
She was quiet. “...never mind.” She nestled deeper into the blankets and soon Vegeta could tell she was asleep. He didn’t know how long he laid there, but it was a long time before sleep took him. He woke after a couple hours feeling like shit. It had been the first night in the last week that he had not slept with her in his arms. ‘It wasn’t because of her,’ he thought. He refused to believe that she had grown on him. It was then that he noticed that Lyri was gone. Not in the room with him or in the living space or bathroom. Vegeta angrily got up, dressed and followed her ki signature down to the lab. Hiding his own ki, he stopped outside and leaned against the wall, listening to Lyri talk to the blue haired scientist.
“Aren’t you hot?” Bulma asked.
“No, it’s light and breathable,” Lyri told her.
“Yeah, but you also have that armor...”
Vegeta could visualize Lyri shrugging. “I guess you get used to it,” she said.
“So...how are things with you and Vegeta? When’s the wedding?” Bulma asked.
“What’s a wedding?” Lyri asked.
“It’s when a man and woman go in front their friends and family...what’s with that face?” Bulma asked.
“In front of friends and family?” Lyri asked.
“Yeah...” Bulma said. There was silence. “Oh my god! No! We don’t do that! You perv!”
“You just said!” Lyri exclaimed.
“A wedding is a ceremony! You wear a dress, the guy wears a suit and you promise to be faithful to each other in front of family and friends!” Bulma yelled, “We don’t fuck in front of anyone! Well...most people don’t...” She giggled. “So, you guys don’t do weddings here?”
“Nope. What’s the point of promising eternal faithfulness when Saiyans mate for life?” Lyri asked.
“Mate? Like...an animal?” Bulma asked. Lyri must have looked either angry or offended because Bulma quickly tried to back track. “I mean...um...”
“It’s fine,” Lyri told her, “You wouldn’t be the first to call us animals...”
“I’m sorry...” Bulma said, sounding slightly uneasy.
“You’re fine. You meant nothing more than curiosity. I shouldn’t have gotten offended,” Lyri told her. They were quiet, except for some shuffling. “You were saying you wanted to see the capital, right?” Lyri asked.
“Yeah,” Bulma said.
“Come on, I’ll show you around,” Lyri told.
“Do you need to ask Vegeta first? Oh! Can I ask him?” Bulma asked.
“Uh...sure?” Lyri said. Vegeta made no attempt to move, knowing that the women would soon know he was there. “Let me set up the scouter for you. Ok...so when you’re ready, just push this button and start talking.”
Vegeta heard the comm on his scouter come on and Bulma’s voice on it, “Hey, Vegeta. Hmm? Oh, sorry! Prince Vegeta.” Lyri must have corrected her. “I’ve been wanting to check out the capital. Is it ok if I steal Lyri so she can be my guide?”
Vegeta rounded the corner and looked at the women. He sent a slight glare at Lyri before turning his eyes to Bulma. “I did have plans for Lyri today but seeing as she has already snuck out...she can take you around the capital.”
“If you need her, we can go another day,” Bulma said.
Vegeta looked at Lyri. “No. Go see the capital.”
“Come with us!” Bulma said with a smile.
“I cannot,” Vegeta said.
“You can’t pull yourself away from your duties for just a bit?” Lyri asked.
Vegeta glared at her but smirked. “Fine. You both have my presence for an hour. Let’s go.”
The trio walked outside and through the streets of the capital. “Tell me about the history of the Saiyans,” Bulma said.
Vegeta was quiet, so Lyri spoke up. “Where to start? Hmm...I guess from the very beginning?” She glanced at Vegeta to see if it was ok. He gave a slight nod. “The Saiyans started out as a strong race on Planet Sadala.”
“Sadala?” Bulma asked.
Lyri nodded. “It was our home world.”
“Was?” Bulma questioned, “What happened to it?”
“The legendary super Saiyan,” Vegeta muttered.
Bulma looked confused so Lyri explained. “Long ago, Planet Sadala was our home world. But it was destroyed. By the legendary super Saiyan. It’s said that his power was too great for him to control and he destroyed everything in his path. And in the end, he ended up destroying himself and Sadala...”
“So the Saiyans came here?” Bulma asked.
“What was left of us...” Lyri told her, “Unfortunately for them, they were treated as slaves by the planet’s inhabitants.”
“That’s awful!” Bulma exclaimed.
“From the stories I’ve heard, it was indeed,” Lyri told her, “But...the Saiyans grew tired of being treated like lesser beings and a war broke out...” The trio stopped in front of a statue of King Vegeta in the midst of battle. “Our king led the war. With him guiding the Saiyans, we were able to win the war and claim the planet as ours.”
“You give my father too much credit...” Vegeta said.
“Was your family royal on your home world?” Bulma asked Vegeta. He gave a slight nod in response.
“I must return to my duties,” he told them. He leaned down and kissed Lyri’s cheek. “I will see you tonight.”
Lyri felt her face grow hot as she watched Vegeta fly back towards the palace. “Aww, you still blush when he kisses you? That’s so sweet!” Bulma said.
“I’m not blushing!” Lyri said, though she could feel her face growing hotter.
Bulma giggled. “So tell me about your prince and how you met,” she said as they started walking again.
“He’s smart. An amazing strategist and a brilliant soldier. He’s ridiculously strong, though rumor has it that no one has seen his true strength. We met here,” she paused by the stadium where the tournament was held long ago. She told Bulma about the tournament and her fight with Vegeta.
“When did you realize you loved him?” Bulma asked.
“I don’t know,” Lyri answered truthfully as they continued walking, “It wasn’t like I woke up one day and was like I love the prince. It was very gradual. Along with being Kiki’s protector, I was occasionally was sent with Prince Vegeta on missions. Over time, I realized that I would do anything to make sure he was safe.”
Bulma smiled. “Sounds like you really care about him.”
Lyri nodded. “I do,” she said, “Anyway, if we continue this way, we’ll eventually head out of the capital. We should return to the palace.”
“Or you can show me where Kakarot lives,” Bulma said.
“You’ve taken a liking to him?” Lyri asked as she led the way to the barracks.
Bulma shrugged. “He’s ok. He doesn’t seem like he’s-“
“Like the rest of us?” Lyri asked, finishing Bulma’s sentence. Bulma nodded. “He’s not. He’s still got his childish charm and he cares a lot more than others. I don’t think I’d like him if he were like everyone else.”
“But...” Bulma started then stopped.
“But Vegeta is like everyone else and I like him?” Lyri asked.
“How’d you know I was gonna say that?” Bulma asked.
Lyri shrugged. “Took a guess. And he’s really not like everyone else. He may seem like it but once you get to know him, you’ll notice it.”
Bulma smiled. They walked towards the barracks, Lyri stopping short a good 12 yards away from it. She stared at the tall man with shaggy hip length black hair that stood outside. “Maybe we should come back another day...”
“Why what’s wrong?” Bulma asked.
“Come on,” Lyri said. They turned around but the man landed in front of them. Lyri moved Bulma behind her. “Leave us alone, Raditz.”
“Can I not congratulate my sister on her news?” Raditz asked.
“I’m not your sister,” Lyri snapped.
“You call Kakarot your brother. But you don’t give me the same honor?” Raditz asked.
“Kakarot earned the right for me to consider him family. You are nothing to me. You’re lower than the dirt on my boot,” Lyri said. She motioned for Bulma to follow her.
“Get back here you fucking bitch!” Raditz snarled as he grabbed her shoulder.
Lyri grabbed his hand, twisting around so that she twisted Raditz’s arm behind him and forced him to the ground. “Don’t touch me again...” she growled. She got off him and started to walk back over to Bulma when a large arm wrapped around her neck. She clawed at Raditz’s arm as he started squeezing. She could hear and see Bulma scream before running away. She tried to get loose but his grip was too tight and he had her in an awkward position. She couldn’t breathe. Everything started going fuzzy before turning black.
