“Get your ass in the fucking ship!” Vegeta yelled at Lyri.
“No!” she yelled back. They had been going back and forth for the last couple of minutes. “I’m not getting stuck on a ship with the bitch who had a hand in my death!”
Vegeta huffed in frustration. “Fine. Stay here then!” He shut the door to the ship and she watched it leave.
‘Great...’ she thought, ‘Guess I could wait until the back up team comes and catch a ride back with them...but they probably took pods. The bigger ships are usually reserved for the royal family...’ She sighed. ‘I’m calling Nix...’ She opened the link between their comms and was grateful when it clicked on.
“Everything ok?” Nix asked.
“Yeah, I totally love being stranded on random planets,” Lyri told him.
“So you’re calling for a ride?” Nix asked.
“Yeah,” she told him.
Nix appeared in front of her. He placed a hand on her and teleported her back to Planet Vegeta. “So what happened to Vegeta?” he asked once they were back in his office.
“He left because I refused to get in the ship,” she told him as she sat in a chair, “...he’s bringing Kiki back with him.”
“The fuck is he thinking?” he asked.
Lyri shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“How do you not know you were there,” Nix said.
“Yeah, I wanted to kill her but Vegeta pulled me off and made me stand on the sidelines. I don’t know what really transpired,” she said.
“I see,” he said, “Sorry for jumping down your throat. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what his thoughts were.”
Vegeta showed up a couple days later. He stepped off the ship with Kiki. He glared at Nix, Lyri and Kakarot, who appeared to be waiting for him. “What the hells do you three want?”
“Are you back back or are you leaving again? And why’d you bring Kiki back? You do know she was banished, right?” Kakarot asked.
“Did you bring her back because we are changing our ways?” Nix asked.
Vegeta rolled his eyes. “She was trying to start an uprising so she could overthrow you,” he said. He shoved Kiki towards Nix. “Thought you’d like to deal with it personally...”
Kiki stumbled and tripped, landing in front of Nix. She looked up at him and growled.
“Put a suppressor on her and put her in the prison,” he told Kakarot.
“What?! By myself?” Kakarot asked.
Nix sighed. “What? Are you not capable enough to handle the task? Are you scared of her?”
“I’m not scared!” Kakarot exclaimed. He walked over to Kiki and knelt next to her. Her growl made him jump slightly. He went to put the suppressor on her but she bit him when he got too close. Kakarot ripped his hand away and Kiki spat the chunk of flesh at him.
Both Nix and Vegeta walked over and kicked her with enough force to knock her out. “Put that thing on her, take her to the prison, then go to medical and get your hand looked at.” Kakarot did as told, leaving with the knocked-out Kiki.
“What happened to the others that were with her?” Nix asked.
“They are on their way back,” Vegeta told him.
“They will be dealt with when they get here then,” Nix said. There was silence and he turned to Lyri. “I need to talk to Vegeta alone.”
“What? Why?” Lyri asked.
“He doesn’t need to give you an explanation,” Vegeta told her.
“Fine. I’ll go,” Lyri said. She walked away wondering what the hells was going on. She walked down to medical and poked her head in the room. “How’s your hand?” she asked Kakarot.
“It’s still there!” Kakarot said showing her his bandaged hand. “What’d I miss?”
“Nothing. They told me to get lost,” she told him.
The medic told Kakarot he could go and Kakarot walked out of the room. “Why?”
“Nix said he wanted to talk to Vegeta alone,” Lyri told him.
“Wonder why...” Kakarot said. Lyri shrugged.
They both walked down the hall and stopped by the science lab. “Your mate is annoying,” Lyri told Bulma.
“Yeah, he is. What’d he do now?” Bulma asked, not looking up from her latest project.
“He wanted to talk to Vegeta alone,” Kakarot said.
“I don’t think it’s annoying to want to have a private conversation with someone,” Bulma said.
“I guess,” Lyri said.
“What? Think they’re talking about you?” Bulma asked.
“No!” Lyri said.
“Not everything is about you,” Bulma said.
Lyri walked out of the lab. “That was mean,” Kakarot said.
“Someone needed to tell her,” Bulma told him.
Lyri walked to her quarters...Vegeta’s quarters. She walked in, took off her scouter and tossed it on the floor. She walked over to the balcony, opened the doors and stepped outside. She didn’t think she was making everything about her, but what the hells did she know. She leaned on the railing and stared out at the planet below her...
“Where’s Lyri?” Nix asked Kakarot. He had called for a meeting and everyone else was there except for her.
Kakarot shrugged. “She came to check on me but left when Bulma started being mean.”
“Go find her,” Nix told him.
Kakarot nodded and made his way to her quarters. He opened the door and started walking to the open balcony but stopped when her heard a crunch under his feet. He lifted his foot and saw the scouter. “Lyri, I think I stepped on your scouter...” She didn’t answer him and he continued to the balcony. She had taken her armor off and was sitting on the railing, staring out over the landscape, lost in her own thoughts. “Hey,” Kakarot said.
“Hmm? Oh. Hey. Didn’t hear you come in,” Lyri said.
“You ok?” Kakarot asked leaning on the railing.
“Thinking,” Lyri told him.
“About?”
“I don’t think I make everything about myself. But I’m out here moping about it, so...making it about myself...” she said.
“Don’t let Bulma get to you,” Kakarot told her. She shrugged. “Seriously. She was being a bitch.” She nodded.
After a minute she asked, “So why’d you come find me?”
“Nix called a meeting,” Kakarot told her.
“Oh. I didn’t have my scouter,” she said.
“Yeah...you’re gonna need a new one,” he said sheepishly as he walked back inside.
“Why?” Lyri asked. He pointed to the crushed scouter on the floor. “Kakarot! How could you?”
“What? Who the hell leaves their scouter on the floor?” he asked.
The made their way to the conference room and walked in. Kakarot took a seat next to his father and Lyri sat in between Nix and Vegeta. “Why’d you call a meeting?” she asked.
“There’s a reason why I asked everyone to be in this room. Kakarot and Bardock, you two are here on behalf of the soldiers. Bulma, you’re here for the outside perspective. Lyri, you’re the voice of the people,” Nix said.
“O...k...” Lyri said.
“Vegeta is here because he knows politics,” Nix added.
“What the hell did you two do?” Lyri asked.
“Vegeta and I sat down and had a discussion about the future of the Saiyan race and there’s a lot of things that have been set in motion that makes the fight for the throne trivial,” Nix said.
“So, there’s not going to be a fight?” Kakarot asked.
Lyri looked at Vegeta then at Nix. “You’re not giving up the throne, are you?”
“Even though this won’t sit well with most of you...no, I’m not,” Nix said.
“That’s bullshit!” Lyri snapped as she quickly stood up, “What gives you the right? You don’t have any claim to the throne. You’re a bastard.”
“Enough!” Vegeta yelled, “It doesn’t matter-“ Lyri walked out mid sentence.
“Told you she makes everything about her,” Bulma whispered to Kakarot.
Nix shot Bulma a look and she shut up. “Well, this went about as well as expected,” he said. He thanked everyone for coming and apologized that he took up their time for no reason...
Lyri leaned against Bardock and Gine’s house. She felt bad about her outburst, but she wasn’t going to go back and apologize. It wasn’t right. Who did Nix think he was? She looked up as a shadow approached her. “I’m not going back to apologize.”
“I’m not gonna make you go back,” Kakarot told her.
“I know what I said was mean, but...” Lyri said but he cut her off.
“Yeah, it was. Listen, I know that you’ve done everything in your power to get Vegeta on the throne, but the fact of the matter is that no one is behind him. Lyri, if he would take it now, no one would respect him. Nix has the people’s support and, for right now, we need to push forward with that,” Kakarot said.
Lyri kicked the sand in front of her. “What if I don’t want to push forward?”
“Then you’ll get left behind,” he told her. She was quiet. “The coronation is the day after tomorrow. Nix expects you to be there.” He left after that.
Two days later...
Lyri rushed down the hall. Though she didn’t want to go, she’d stand in the back and watch the shit show...at least that was the plan until she ran into Vegeta, Nix and Bulma standing outside the throne room.
“Thank you for coming,” Nix said.
“Whatever. It’s just for appearances. Excuse me.” She tried to squeeze by them but Vegeta grabbed her. “What?”
“Walk in with me,” Vegeta said.
“What? I’m not even dressed for that!” Lyri said.
“I don’t care,” he said. The dull roar behind the door softened. He offered her his arm. Lyri hesitated but took it and walked in with Vegeta, with Nix and Bulma behind them. Lyri stepped off to one side when they got to the front. She watched as Vegeta stood before everyone and began to speak. “I stand before you, fixing to crown someone else as king of this planet. Let it be known that I am only doing this because I can see that he has our planet and it’s people’s best interests at heart. Should I feel that he can no longer do his role to the best of his ability, I will step in.” He stepped down and stood next to Lyri.
She glanced at him. His face was its usual emotionless scowl. She took his hand and squeezed it, a silent jester to say she was sorry it ended up this way. He let his hand rest in hers as they listened to Nix’s speech.
“...before I end things here, I want to take a moment and introduce the woman who is leading our science department and who will be my queen,” Nix said. He held his hand out to Bulma. Bulma took his hand and walked to stand by his side.
It’s was Vegeta’s turn to squeeze Lyri’s hand. It was hard and painful. She gritted her teeth, focusing on the pain so she didn’t have a outburst, which was exactly what Vegeta wanted. The crowd began whispering amongst themselves.
“Thank you all for attending. I hope to see you all later tonight,” Nix concluded before taking Bulma and leaving the throne room.
Vegeta and Lyri followed after them. Vegeta led Lyri to a newer section of the palace and into a room. He kicked the door closed and let her hand go. “What the hell is the matter with you?” she asked him, “The Vegeta I know wouldn’t have let it go this far. Why? What are you planning?”
Vegeta scoffed. “And you think know me?”
“Our time together last year may not have been that long, but I do know you a lot better than you think I do...” Lyri trailed off.
“Hmm?” Vegeta asked, seeing the wheels turning in her head.
She didn’t answer, instead pushed past him to sit at the computer in the corner of the room. “What’s your access information?”
“Why the hell do you want my access information?” Vegeta asked.
“Because mine is basic and won’t let me into the files that I want to look at,” Lyri told him.
“What the hells are you doing?” he asked.
She turned to look at him. “Nix’s whole thing is that he knows what the people want. That the people trust him...” He stared at her, waiting for her to continue. “How much do we know about him though? Besides what he’s told us?”
“And what are you going to do with that information? Take it to the people? Blackmail him? Because that worked so well last time...” he told her.
“Well, it’s either this or you go take what’s rightfully yours! I don’t understand, Vegeta! Why? He’s not your father. You don’t have to play the politics,” she said.
“You wouldn’t understand. It’s not that easy,” he told her. He walked over and logged in under his access before turning and disappearing into the gravity room behind him.
Lyri sighed and turned towards the computer. She began pulling up anything and everything that she could that mentioned Nix. “It’s not much,” she said out loud, “But it’ll do for now.” She poured over everything and groaned when she only got the bare minimum. “Seriously? I need the King’s access? Great...” She inhaled deeply and leaned back in the chair, thinking about what she could do next.
Hours passed and Vegeta finally emerged from the gravity room. He glanced over at Lyri and found her sleeping at the desk. He thought about leaving her there but decided against it. He scooped her into his arms, intending to take her to her quarters. He froze as he held her. Images of the last time he held her like this flash through his mind. She had been limp, cold and wrapped in a sheet. Her arms wrapped around his neck, bringing him back to the present. He walked into the next room and set her on the bed. Vegeta walked to the other side of the bed and sat down. He sat for a minute trying to pull himself together before he laid down. He rolled over and stared at her until his eyelids got heavy. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it before falling asleep.
