Angst: Hey, this chapter it's only me and Boris... ok, cancel out Boris, bringing you lots of angsty goodness!

Boris: Oh, joy.

Angst: Was that supposed to be funny? Anyway, I'm busy deciding who to torture in this chapter... Boris, fetch me a dartboard with all the Bladebreakers' names on it.

Boris: But my job duties only...

Angst: Fetch the fucking board.

Boris: Sure, sure.... *fetches the board*

Angst: Ok, here goes... *throws dart*

Boris: OW!!! You hit my nose!

Angst: Sorry. *throws another dart*

Mariah: Hey! You tore my cat ears!

Angst: Oops. *throws yet another dart*

*after everything but the dartboard has been hit*

Angst: Here's the last dart, hope it's a lucky hit. *throws dart* Yay! It's Max! Hmm... how should I torture him?

Boris: How about throwing darts at him?

Angst: Nah, not fun.

Boris: You don't say. I thought you were obsessed with it.

Angst: Was that supposed to be funny? Anyway, I've come up with a painful plan. Well, I guess we're ready to start. Oh, wait, we missed something. *stares at Boris pointedly*

Boris: We did? What?

Angst: Something important and legal. *nudges Boris*

Boris: I can't think of anything.

Angst: The disclaimer, goddammit, the one that says "trueangel doesn't own Beyblade"! Hell, you can be real dumb sometimes.

Boris: Oh, well, since you did it for me, I guess we can start.

Angst: -_-*

Chapter 8 The Taint of Darkness

Rei opened his eyes, and the first thing he noticed was the throbbing pain in his head. He struggled to remember the events of last night, but it was no use, his mind just refused to work right now. Holding onto a table edge, he hauled himself onto his feet and looked at the mess around him. Tyson and Max lay naked in a tangled heap of limbs in one corner. Kenny, he recalled, was not at the party. But there was no sign of Kai or Xan.

"Kai? Xan?"

Rei heard a door open behind him. Turning around, he saw Kenny walk out of his room with Dizzy under one arm.

"Chief, what happened here last night?"

"Well, I wouldn't be surprised, you guys were getting so hopelessly drunk."

"Drunk? I... OH SHIT!!!" Rei exclaimed as memories of last night, memories of what he did flooded his brain.

"Hmm? Is there a fire?" Tyson said half aw "Oo "Oops." Tyson just noticed the mess he and Max were in.

Rei ignored him. "Chief, have you seen Xan?"

"Haven't seen him since last night."

"You sound worried. What's wrong?" Tyson asked, concerned.

"Kai ran away. And Xan went after him."

"This is not good," Kenny commented. "Last time Kai went off, we had enough trouble. Now we have two missing members."

"And it's all my fault again! I have to find them!"

Rei ran for the door, but Tyson stuck out a leg and tripped him.

"No, Rei. We aren't gonna let you get lost as well. We'll all go together. Just give me and Max a few minutes, and I promise We'll be on our way."

"Chief..." Rei pleaded.

"Rei, I have to stick with Tyson for this one."

"FINE!!!" Rei stormed off to a couch and sat down, fuming, while Chief started waking Max up and Tyson went to put on some clothes.

10 minutes later, Rei, Max and Tyson were standing outside their unit. It was decided that Kenny would stay in case Xan or Kai returned, or they got a phonecall.

"So, any ideas?" Max asked.

Rei stuck out his hand and flagged down a taxi. As they got in, Rei said, "I have a feeling that Kai has been recaptured, and that Xan is with him."

Rei told the driver the address of the Abbey, and they were off. After a minute of silence, Rei spoke.

"So, I didn't know you two were a couple."

"Well, it was an accident, really. We both were drunk, and..."

Max poked Tyson hard in the ribs. Tyson realised his mistake and quickly shut up.

"And we confessed our feelings the next morning," Max said, trying to undo Tyson's damage. "Well, it's all out in the open now," he joked, "Way more open that we had ever thought it would ever be."

After another moment of silence, Rei said, "The two of you make a cute couple."

Tyson blushed. "Thanks."

"Especially when you make out," Rei added in a bittersweet tone.

Tyson turned a deeper shade of red, while Max began to blush as well.

"Like me and Kai when we both started..."

*Flashback*

Rei stood at the balcony, a tear running down his cheek. Stupid Hiwatari. Why wouldn't he stop toying with him? Sometimes, Kai would act all caring and tenderly towards him. Other times, he would be cold and uncaring, and usually he suffered most from Kai's wrath. It was impossible to tell what that damned Hiwatari was thinking. Did he love him? Rei would believe it for a moment when they got along well, but the next moment they seemed like the worst of enemies.

Rei heard the room door open. No doubt it was that Hiwatari. The two of them always got the same room. Others thought that he was the only one who could stand Kai, but that was because he always kept his actions in check. In reality he was going mad.

"Don't you dare run away from dinner like that again," Kai shouted.

*Why would you bother?* Rei thought silently.

"And don't start talking back, because as team captain, I have every right to step in when a member misbehaves."

"Shut up, Hiwatari."

"I am your captain, and you will respect me, whether by my merit, my status, or out of fear alone, Rei Kon. Face me when I speak to you!"

Rei turned around to face kai, and it was then that Kai saw the tears streaming down from Rei's eyes. He was prepared for a quarrel, a fight, a fallout... anything but this.

"Wh... what's wrong?"

Rei cried in silence.

"Tell me, Rei! Please!"

"It's impossible to understand you, Hiwatari. Sometimes you treat me like your worst foe, other times we are the best of friends."

"Is that it?"

"Tell me, Kai, am I your enemy or your friend? I would prefer sticking to either one of those roles instead of constantly alternating."

"Rei, I only scold you because I care for you. I don't want you to get into any trouble."

"How am I to know whether this is the truth, or one of those lies you tell to fit your mask?"

"Rei, please, believe me."

"Why should I?"

"Because, I..."

"And don't you go pulling that old 'I am your team captain' thing on me again, Kai. I've had enough of it."

"Rei, I..." Kai watched helplessly as Rei got ready to leave the room. "Wait, Rei! Rei... I love you!"

He froze and turned around. "You what?"

"I love you, Rei, more than anything else. I've always been afraid to tell you cos I'm afraid of losing you, but I guess I have no choice now."

"Kai..." Rei ran back and threw himself into Kai's chest. He cried harder than ever.

"Rei!" Kai cried, alarmed. "What's the matter?"

"Nothing, Kai. It's just... I'm so happy."

"You're not... mad or anything?"

"Why would I ever be? I love you, Kai, since the very first day I've loved you with all my heart."

Kai was taken aback at first, but soon he began to do what he had always wanted to do: to embrace Rei.

"Me too, Rei. Me too."

*End flashback*

"We were so wild then... always devising naughty schemes," Rei continued with a shadow of happiness in his . "B. "But soon, the fun died down. The emotional bonding had never wavered, but we just weren't as wild. I guess... Xan brought back memories of what I had so long ago."

Tyson and Max listened in silence, not knowing what to say.

"Sir, we've reached," the driver reported.

"Oh, thanks. Here's your payment, it should be enough. Keep the change," Rei said before rushing off with the others into the Abbey.

The three Bladebreakers stood in a dark corridor, unsure where to go. The corridor was lined cou countless doors, and Tyson was sure many of the doors led into other corridors. Deciding to take a chance, Rei opened the first door to their left. Nope, that was a storeroom. Rei closed the door, but suddenly he heard voices behind one of the doors.

"Quick," he hissed. "Hide!"

"Which door?"

"That one!"

The three of them squeezed into the small room behind the door, and quickly closed it. They were enveloped in pitch darkness.

"Ow, Tyson, you're stepping on my foot!"

"It's not me, it's Max!"

"I'm Max!"

"Ok, that means it's Rei!"

"I'm over here!"

"Stop moving!"

"Ow!"

"QUIET!"

They heard a door open in the corridor outside. A few men stepped through - they couldn't be sure how many.

"Have you heard? The master of Black Dranzer has returned."

"No wonder Voltaire seemed so happy."

"The most amazing thing is, he willingly took the power of Black Dranzer without resistance!"

The men's conversation faded into the distance. It was in the silence that Rei noticed a warm breath down his neck.

"Tyson?"

"What? I'm sitting down here."

"Max?"

"I'm right in front of you."

"Then who's that behind me?"

"It's me."

"Xan?"

"Get out of this cupboard first, the men have long gone."

Max opened the door and the four boys spilled out into the corridor.

"Xan, what are you doing here? And what's up with the ninja costume?" Tyson asked.

Rei wrinkled his eyebrows. "Wait... you're the one I fought that night..."

"Well, yes. To cut a long story short, I work for BioVolt. More specifically, I work for Voltaire and only Voltaire. Now, if you'll just follow me there's no need for anyone to get hurt."

"YOU!" Rei screamed. "You... you had planned to break me and Kai up! So that Kai would return to Voltaire!"

"One of Voltaire's more ingenious plans, I must say. Now you will follow quietly or I will show one one of my, say, 200 ways to kill a person, as a ninja."

"TRAITOR!!!" Rei lunged at Xan, but he was held back by Max and Tyson.

"Forget it," Tyson growled.'s n's not worth dirtying your hands over such scum."

"For once, listen to Tyson. It's not worth it giving up your life for nothing in return."

Rei struggled a bit more, but he knew it was no use and gave up. The three of them followed Xan down various hallways, descended many steps under the surface until they stopped in front of a wooden door.

"Go in. Kai's dying to meet you."

Suddenly, Rei remembered the conversation he had heard. Kai had succumbed to Black Dranzer. But why? Rei knew the answer, but he had to hear it for himself. Fingers clasping onto the cold iron handle of the heavy wooden door, he dragged in open and entered. Tyson and Max tried to follow, but Xan stopped them.

"Wait. One at a time."

Rei stepped into a stone dungeon. The stone walls of the chamber were covered in brown stains, which looked eerily like blood. There was a bowl-shaped structure dug into the ground with scratches all over the stone. And, at the far end, sitting on a wooden bench, was Kai.

"You're here, Kon."

"Kai, why?"

"You know."

"But I need to hear it from you."

"I fear I cannot live up to the expectations of Dranzer. As a beast of fire, Dranzer demands my passion and emotion, my... love." Kai spat that word. "How can I give what I have never been given?"

"You're wrong, Kai! I do love you! I have given you my friendship and my love!"

"I used to think so too, Kon. But recent events have shown me otherwise."

"Xan had planned to break us up! Don't you see?"

"Even then, it still says something about the sincerity of your love."

"Please, Kai, I have always loved you, and I always will."

"How am I to believe someone who has just betrayed me?"

"Damn it, Kai, even if I have to die to make you see the truth I will do it!"

"Then let me grant your wish." Kai took Black Dranzer out of his pocket. "Any last requests?"

Rei took Driger out of his own pocket. "That you will understand."

"3, 2, 1, LET IT RIP!"

A black and a grey beyblade flew into the dish into the middle of the room. Without hesistation, both bit beasts emerged out of the beyblades.

Driger, Tiger Claw!"

The white tiger lunged at the black phoenix, but the bird flew out of reach.

"Dranzer, Fire Arrows!"

A volley of arrows hit Driger, causing it to growl in pain.

"Driger, Tiger Claw again!"

But it was useless; Dranzer was way beyond the reach of Driger.

"Dranzer, Flamethrower!"

The white tiger was engulfed in flames as Rei watched helplessly.

*Please, Driger. Please pull through, for Kai,* Rei thought to himself.

As if on his command, the Dranzer in Kai's pocket started glowing a bright red. A red beam shot out and hit Rei, filling him with energy like he had never felt before. Driger growled to show he was feeling the same might course through his veins.

"Do you know what this is, Driger? It's the energy of love! I've...I've never felt so happy, so content before!"

Driger purred in agreement.

"Ok, Driger, for Kai. Tiger Roar attack!"

Driger let out a mighty roar that revetebrated in the stone walls of the dungeon. Even Black Dranzer could not escape from the sound waves, and it started falling from the air.

"Tiger Claw!"

Driger lunged at Black Dranzer once more. This time the attack connected, and Dranzer was sent flying out of the dish. Xan reached out and caught the beyblade.

"You are weak, Kai. Weakened by the friendship and the love you once experienced. You do not deserve Black Dranzer."

Rei felt a surge of energy leave Kai's body. The energy given by Black Dranzer, no doubt. Kai collapsed and almost hit the floor, but Rei caught him in tim

"No!" Max screamed. "You will have to get through me first!"

"Max, no!" Tyson cried, alarmed.

"Fine, I will let you experience the dark side of Dreamer. Max, ready to perish?"

Max pushed Tyson away. "Run! Hurry, escape!"

Tyson took one last glance before helping Rei carry Kai away.

"Dreamer, go!"

"Go, Draciel!"

Rei and Tyson followed the route Xan had led them on to exit the building. Outside, Rei quickly flagged down a taxi. He sat in the back seat with Kai's unconscious body, while Tyson sat in front giving the driver directions.

Finally, they reached their unit. Rei carried Kai out of the taxi, while Tyson paid the driver. Tyson then ran ahead to knock on the door. Kenny opened it to allow them in.

Rei placed Kai's body on the sofa, and it was then that Kai started to come to.

"Rei..." Kai called out still half awake.

"I'm here, Kai, I'm here."

Kai opened his eyes, an expression of pain marring his sweet features. He opened his mouth to try to talk, but the pain he had ignored while under the spell of Black Dranzer was hitting back worse than ever. Luckily, Rei was there to help him finish his questions.

"You... love Xan...?"

"Do I love Xan?"

Kai nodded.

"I... I used to. He reminded me of the times we had when we were a new couple. But now, knowing his motives and intention to break us up, I hate him more than ever."

"Want... revenge..."

"No, Kai. Just... just let it go. It's all over now, all over."

"Why?"

"I don't want you to get hurt anymore. I just want us to live in peace."

"Love... you."

Rei looked at Kai, his own eyes teary and thankful, before pulling him into a tight embrace.

"I love you too, Kai. Now, get some rest, the pain will just fade away as you sleep." Rei laid Kai back on the sofa, and watched silently as his angel drifted off into a dreamless sleep.

By dinnertime, most of the pains on Kai's body had indeed gone. However, his feet were aching as hell, and Rei had to bring him around the place. Also, all his old wounds were burning painfully.

Right now, Kai was sitting with Rei in the dining room, eating some porridge. Kai looked up as Tyson walked right past the smell of food.

"Come on, Tyson, get something to eat."

"I've got no appetite. Max isn't back yet."

"Where's Max?"

Kai looked at Rei, questioning. Rei had a guilty look on his face. In his elation about Kai's forgiveness, he had forgotten all about Max.

"He... he stayed behind to distract Xan while we got away."

"He WHAT?"

Suddenly, there was a weak knock on the door. Tyson bolted to open it, silently praying that it would be Max.

His prayers were answered, but not in they way he wanted them to be.

Opening the door, Tyson saw Max standing outside, his entire body drenched in blood.

"Max! What happened? Wh-"

Tyson suddenly went numb with horror as he noticed that where Max's left arm once had been, all that was left was a bloody stump.

"MAX!!!"

Angst: Mwahahaha... suffer, Max...

Max: *whimpers*

trueangel: I'm back!!! *to Angst* Hope you didn't get up to any mischief while I was away.

Angst: *hides Max behind body* Nothing! Just a little bit of angst.

trueangel: Well, I guess that's acceptable, given who you are, so long as you didn't go too far, such as torturing one of the main characters...

Angst: Me? Of course!
