Heero started to come to after a few hours, but when he did, he wished that he was still asleep. All the events that had happened before started to flood back to him. He shot right up aware of his surroundings and that noise. The noise of a heart monitor and oxygen pump was crystal clear in his mind.
Heero was too afraid to turn to his side to see if it was true. That Duo was right beside him. He couldn't look at the person whose life he had destroyed with his own selfishness.
A creak came from the door indicated that someone was coming in. sure enough Sally came into the room with a clipboard in had. Eyebrows raised a bit when she noted that Heero was finally awake.
"I see that you are awake a well Heero" Sally said.
Heero looked up to meet Sally's eyes. "Is-is he next to me?" Heero asked Sally.
"If you mean Duo, then yes, he is right next to you Heero. The guys thought it would have been a better idea for you to be in the same room as Duo. I am sure that Duo might have wanted it also," Sally said with a sigh.
With those reassuring words, Heero turned his head to see Duo on the hospital bed. Pale and quite bandaged up. Duo looked like a mummy.
"How is he doing so far?" Heero asked though he knew that answer to that.
"There hasn't been any changes to his condition right now," Sally said. "I think it would be best if you talked to him, even though he isn't awake, talking to a person who is in coma could sometimes bring them back. Take your time, I assume you have a lot of things you want to tell Duo, I will be back to check up on him in a couple of hours," Sally said.
"Hai," was all Heero could manage out.
Once Sally was out of the room, Heero carefully got off the bed and walked over to Duo's bed. With trembling hands he touched Duo's bandaged face.
"Ne Duo...how are you?" Heero choked, when clearly he sees that Duo isn't fine.
"I never meant to hurt you. You could have told me! You could have said something to tell me that you can't talk!" Heero said with his head bowed, tears starting to form. "Funny ne? When I left you, I hurt you badly. But now you have the last laugh. Seeing me like this. I think I now understand why people call this love a painful emotion. I...I should have never left you Duo. The perfect solider isn't perfect anymore, not after I fell in love with you and still am."
Heero sat back against the hard plastic chairs. This was so hard to do. So hard to say to Duo even though he wasn't sure if Duo would ever wake up again. Why was god so cruel to Duo, to them? But Heero knew no one would answer that question.
Heero wiped the tears that were flowing freely from his eyes. "I swear to you Duo. I will make this right when you wake up. I swear I would never leave your side ever again...only you can leave me. Does that sound all right? I just want you to come back to me so that I could tell you how beautiful you are and...I just want to hold you..." Heero sobbed. Heero knew he must look awful, but he didn't care. Not anymore. He carefully took a hold of Duo's small bruised hand and held on to it. Heero laid his head down on the bed, lips making contact with Duo's warm hand. Giving Duo a small kiss, Heero went to sleep in that position. If Heero would have looked up at Duo's face, he could have seen a single tear escaping Duo's eyes and getting absorbed into the cotton bandage.
