Chapter 7.
Run Rabbit.
“So...now what?”
Heero didn’t reply straight away. The whimsical tone that the question had been asked in didn’t really make it sound as though Duo was looking for an answer. Turning his head slightly to the side Heero glanced over at his braided partner.
The last few minutes had happened so fast they felt like a blur. From being told that they were the new game to being ‘released’ had only taken ten minutes or so, Ivana and Ruger shepherding them both towards the large ornate gates that graced the only break in the wall. Once they were on the other side the gates had been closed and locked, leaving them standing there in silence. Ruger seemed to have foregone following his mistress in order to lay across the path as an added deterrent to any thoughts they may have had as to breaking back in again.
Either that or Ivana had ordered him to stay.
Heero sighed.
“Well we can’t stay here,” he said reasonably, casting a glance both ways along the wall at their back.
Duo tore his gaze away from for forest below them with obvious difficulty to look over. “And where do you suggest we go?” he gestured slightly, “Down there? Into that?”
“Later perhaps.” Heero nodded towards the cliff, slipping back into the soldier routine with ease. “For now though we need to regroup and find out what resources we have to work with.” He looked back at the gate once before turning to the left and striding quickly along, following the wall. Rugcramcrambled to his feet and the faint clicking sound from the other side of the barrier told them both that he was keeping pace with them.
Not a comforting thought.
The two bags of supplies Ivana had mentioned had not been left by the gates, obviously she was well aware of their abilities and was erring on the side of caution. They came across them halfway along the wall and Heewungwung one over his shoulder as he tossed the other to Duo in one fluid motion.
Catching the bag Duo slipped the strap over his head so it crossed over his chest without a pause and continued following Heero, the clicking of claws still audible from inside the courtyard.
“Where are we going?” he asked, when it became obvious that they weren’t heading towards the forest at all.
H
Heero glanced back. “The beach,” he said.
“Any reason in particular?”
“Yes.”
A pause. “You going to tell me wthatthat reason is?”
“I thought I already had.” Heero glanced back once more, “We need to regroup.”
They walked the rest of the way in silence.
***
“Okay now Yuy. Spill.”
Duo dropped his bag onto the sandy ground, letting the strap slip through his fingers almost as though he had forgotten its presence, and sat down on a near by rock.
They were back at the site of the picnic. Had it only been yesterday? Duo wondered vaguely. So much had happened since then, he remembered sitting there idly, drinking his water and watching Heero build castles from pebbles. He could even see the mound of stones, still where they had left it, less than twenty four hours ago.
He frowned suddenly.
“Heero, what’re you doing?”
Heero didn‘t look up as he began to push the stones to one side, digging down into the sandy ground underneath. “I’ll explain in a minute. Open the bags Duo. Tell me what we have.”
“Okay.” Duo unbuckled the flap of the bag and flipped it open, emptying the contents haphazardly onto the sand and gravel. He stared at the small pile for a while, lifting one or two items to study them in greater detail and spreading the others out across the ground.
It wasn’t bad, he had to admit... but it could have been a lot better.
“Well, I’ve got one litre bottle of w, fo, four bars of chocolate, an apple, some sort of meat sandwich - looks like ham but it probably isn‘t...” he unwrapped it and sniffed tentatively at the filling. “...iodine tablets, a box of... something... um?”
Heero looked up at the note of confused bafflement in Duo’s voice. “What’s wrong?”
Duo was holding something small in the palm of his hand, a box of some sort, and staring at it as if it was dancing the hokey-kokey. “Why does she think we’ll nehesehese?” He held the box up and Heero got a good look at the brand name.
Durex.
“Hn.” A well hidden smirk.
“I’m being serious Heero, does she think we‘re going to be reverting back to baser instincts out there or something... and why protection? She‘s going to be trying to kill us after all, we don‘t really have a lot of time to worry about STIs...”
“Duo...“ His tone was bland but there was a hint of something - amusement? - that stopped it from being harsh. “Put them in your pocket not back in the bag.” Heero said, returning his interest to the cache of stones, “They may come in useful later on.”
Duo frowned slightly but when Heero offered no further information he slipped the box of condoms into his trouser pocket slowly, almost as if they would burn him. After a moment or two during which he was very conscious of the sharp edges of the box digging into his thigh he returned to the small pile of survival equipment spread over the ground.
The rest of the items didn’t really come as much of a surprise. There was a small tab of waterproof matches and a thin, tin, solar blanket, which he doubted very much they would be using as it reflected every scrap of light like a beacon. They had some extremely basic first aid supplies, little more than some butterfly strips and a sticking plaster. There was also a small wristwatch and compass which he immediately attached to his wrist.
And finally, there was the six inch, serrated hunting blade with the black handle, hollowed out and with a screw top. The pungent smell of medicinal alcohol hit his nose when he investigated further and he reattached the lid firmly before tying the knife, in its holster, to his right thigh.
It felt good to feel the weight of a weapon. He was no longer helpless.
During all of this Heead aad abandoned his little stone pile and was assessing his own bag. “I have the same.” He told Duo as he attached his own knife holster to his leg. The box of condoms he opened, separating each foil packet from its neighbour before putting the individual items into his pocket, spreading them between both of his trouser pockets and even adding a couple to the buttoned pocket on his shirt. He offered no explanation, not that Duo really wanted one.
Once this was done he picked something up from the middle of the stone cache and offered it to Duo with a curt, “Here.”
...better not be lubrication or so help me...
“What is it?” Duo took the offerwithwith trepidation, surprise taking over when he discovered that Heero was holding out nothing more interesting than two more chocolate bars. “You hid these yesterday didn’t you,” he said, a statement rather than a question.
Heero nodded, “I thought it best.”
“So you guessed then that something like this might happen?”
“No.” Heero shrugged slightly, as if not quite happy that Duo would think that of him. “It’s best to be prepared for all eventualities though. I was merely being cautious.”
Duo was studying the disturbed pile of rocks now, seeing other items hidden in the mass of stones. “We didn’t have medical supplies when we were on the picnic,” he muttered quietly.
“No.” Heero agreed, “I found those later and came back.”
“When I was in the library.”
A nod.
That explained the soaked through Heero in the library yesterday, one mystery cleared up. Duo sighed, “Heero...” It wasn’t good that Heero still felt the need to keep him in the dark with all of this. They were supposed to be in this together after all, equal information, equal partners, just... equal.
“I also refilled our water bottles from yesterday and left them here.” Heero continued, seemingly unaware of Duo’s unhappy countenance. He picked up one of the two rather sandy looking bottles and placed it in the bottom of his bag after ensuring that the screw top was securely fastened.
“That’s all very well and good,” the chocolate in Duo’s hands was beginning to melt inside its wrapping. He placed it on the sand next to the rest of his supply pile. “But...you...ah forget it.” He raised a hand in dismissal of the thought; they had more pressingblemblems to deal with at the moment.
Namely, how they were going to keep their heads in their rightful and proper locations.
“It’s not a lot of provisions for eight daysit,”it,” he said, surveying the meagre spread once more. He knew there was a good reason for the lack of provisions but he was loathe to say it loud. Heero however, had no such shortcoming.
“She doesn’t want to waste food on us ouslyusly,” he said, repacking his own bag carefully, to ensure that none of the precious cargo would be damaged in any way. The smaller items. like the matches and iodine tablets, he slipped into his pockets, keeping them close to his person where they were less likely to be lost. “She believes we’re not going to last very long out here.”
His packing finished Heero then turned his attentions to his shoes. They were slightly too big on his feet and he wasn’t wearing any socks, walking any great distance therefore was going to cause blisters. He cursed himself for the mistake. A quick glance over to Duo showed him that the other boy was in a similar boat; this needed to be fixed before they even started.
Taking off the long sleeved shirt that covered his usual tank top he proceeded to rip off a strip of material from the bottom about two inches in width. Once he had one he did the same again before slipping the now considerably shorter shirt back on again. Duo watched the proceedings in confusion.
“Basic maintenance. If we go into the forest with just the moccasins on we will have blisters within half an hour.” Heero said as he wrapped his left foot and then his right in the strips, making sure to have the ends of his trousers tightly underneath the bindings. “We have enough problems to deal with already without adding more. The material will hopefully give us a level of protection... for a while at least,” he glanced up after tucking the edge of the material under the bandage with a well practiced air, “you should do the same.”
Duo nodded - it was a good plan - and proceeded to do just that, wrapping his feet as well as he could, concentrating on the toes and heels. “What are your soles like?” he asked Heero as he picked up one of his own shoes and turned it over to inspect the thickness and patternation of the rubber sole.
“Decent enough.” Heero remarked, doing the same. “Yours?”
“Fine.” Duo passed the shoe he was holding over to Heero, “Judge for yourself.”
Taking the moccasin from Duo, Heero studied the bottom of it in silence for a while. “Your grip pattern is different from mine,” he mused thoughtfully. Turning the shoe over again he glanced at the worn inside, noting the faded gilt numbers on the side of the leather upper shoe, “And you have the same size as I do.”
“What are you suggesting?” Duo looked confused.
The Japanese boy didn’t answer immediately but stared at the mismatched shoes in his hands for a while longer. Suddenly he seemed to come back to his senses and passed Duo’s shoe back over to him, “I’m not suggestinythiything,” he said quietly, “Not yet anyway.”
Duo frowned at the evasive answer but slipped his shoe back on anyway. It fit better now, he noted in relief, more snug. Something hit him suddenly and he looked over at Heero.
“Why aren’t we more concerned?”
“What do you mean?”
He gestured, “Well, there’s a mad woman out there who wants to hunt us down like animals and display us in her collection,” he said, “And yet I don’t feel half as bad now as I did last night.”
“Hn.” Heero snorted, “Last night we were powerless. Now though...” he slipped the knife from its holster easily and gripped the handle, testing it out for a second, familiarising himself with the weight and the feel of the weapon before placing it back. “Now we have some control back.”
Duo nodded, it made sense. “The worst part of anything is always the wait.” He stood up suddenly, brushing the sand from his knees. “Well then, shall we get this show on the road?”
***
There were no paths.
That was something they had found very quickly. The first few feet had been relatively easy to push through, small, weak, young plants that didn’t take much persuasion to bend to their will. That hadn’t lasted very long though and they soon found themselves facing up against trees and scrub that had been there probably since before the colonies were a twinkle in some mad scientist’s eye.
Without the compasses it was easy to see how they could just start wandering in circles in such a place. There was no sense of direction to be found, although Duo noticed that the ground they were walking across was always heading on a slight decline... whether it was intentional or not he had no idea. He just trusted in Heero’s judgement, having had no experience in this kind of setting before.
For the first few hours they did nothing more than clamber over tree roots in a strange sort of semi twilight caused by the leaf canopy overhead, forcing their way through the intermingled branches of climbers that had curiously tried to climb each other at some point in the past, causing a knotted mass of ground cover that reached for them and was damn near impossible to get through.
Heero lost a shoe in one such mess and they wasted so much time in finding it again that Duo walf alf inclined to believe that the plant had actually eaten it.
They walked in silence, conserving energy and water, although they were both sweating enough that Duo didn’t really think it mattered. Still, the sheer effort of breaking through some of the brush didn’t really put him in the mood to talk. The air was heavy on his back, weighing him down. He was about to fish out his water bottle and have another drink when suddenly...
“Goddamnit!”
Heero stopped at the curse. It was the first word spoken in over an hour. Looking back he saw Duo clutching at his arm. “What’s wrong?”
Duo growled in misery. “Another one of those bee things.” He examined the wound carefully. “I think I need your help again Heero.”
“I don’t think they’re bees Duo. They seem to like you.” Heero fished in his pocket for the surgical needle he had attached to a scrap of material. “Come here, let me see.”
“Blood sucking little bastards.” Duo cursed, but he came. Holding his arm out to Heero he glanced away, focusing on the bark of a nearby tree. He didn’t like to watch. This was the fifth time Heero had done this for him and he knew what was going to happen.
“You must have sweet blood.” Heero remarked casually as he dipped the needle point into the red welt that the bee had left behind and flicked it quickly out and up. Something pushed out of the wound and he brushed it away. “Finished. You really need to try and stop hitting them away.” He advised, “It’s harder to get their heads out of the wound if their bodies aren’t attached.”
Duo snorted, “Easier said than done, buddy.” He pushed his bangs away from his forehead where they were sticking to the sweat on his brow. “God this is hell.”
“Do you want to take a quick break?” Heero asked, looking at him in concern, noting a faint pallor under the tan.
“Nah, I’m fine.” Duo said, “Just not used to this heat is all.”
Heero pulled out his water bottle and took a drink, leaning back against the trunk of a tree as he did so. “Five minutes,” he said with a gasp as he swallowed, “We need to be careful. Not overdo it. I’m sorry Duo,” he looked over briefly before studying the water bottle in his hands intently, “sometimes I get focused, I--”
“I know.” Duo drank a little himself and grinned, already feeling better just from being able to stand still for a second. “Me too, don’t worry.”
“Hn.” Heero glanced back the way they had come. “We’re leaving an obvious trail,” he said in concern.
“Not much we can do about it at the moment.” Duo shrugged pragmatically but turned to stare at the path of broken brush they had left behind them.
It was fairly obvious.
For a second a thick feeling of panic welled up inside him, pushing upwards towards his throat, making it constrict. He fought it down.
“Shall we get moving?”
“It’s only been two minutes.”
“Yeah...well...” Duo shrugged, “Come on. It’s boring standing here, and who knows... if we stay still too long these damn plants might think we’d be a good climbing pole.”
He scuffed at the sinewy stems idly. Heero pushed himself off the tree and nodded.
“Okay.”
They walked on in silence once again.
***
Heero wasn’t sure why he was surprised when they came across the river. He vaguely remembered noticing that the ground fell in a valley the other morning when he was staring out of the window, watching the mist dissolve.
Maybe it was the sheer suddenness with which they came across it. He had been expecting a decrease in the foliage and then a free expanse where they would be able to see the sky and breathe again... something other than this thick, heavy, perfumed air.
It was the complete opposite of that. Leading a little, he had been the first one to stumble across the river bed, literally. One second he had been on solid ground, the next his leg had disappeared into the cool water up to his ankle. It shocked him so much that he made a sound of surprise, stumbling a little at the difference in ground level, and then there was a crashing in the brush behind him and suddenly Duo was there.
“What’s wrong? Heero! Shit! you ok?”
“Fine.” He lifted his left foot out and shook it a little. “Just wet.”
“Jesus! Don’t do that to me.” Heero was surprised to see Duo’s eyes large and wide with worry. “I thought...” He reached out to help Heero straighten up, his hand lingering, checking for something. Heero shook him off impatiently.
“Duo! Stop it, what’s wrong with you?”
“What’s wrong with me?” Duo pulled his hand back like he’d been stung, “Nothing’s wrong with me, Yuy. I’m not the one who...”
“Who what?”
“...Nothing.” He cleared his throat and relaxed his posture with difficulty. “Come on, we should carry on...”
“No.” He should have been trying to figure out a way across the river but for some reason Heero reached out and touched Duo on the shoulder lightly. Duo’s eyes, which were still roving like lightening over his figure, slowed and came to rest looking at his own. Heero shook his head, “I don’t know what... you ok?” He had to admit he was more than a little concerned with the faint tremor he could feel in Duo’s shoulder but at the sound of his voice it seemed that the other boy began to pull himself together.
“Aye, fine.” Duo nodded sharply, withdrawing from the touch. Heero pulled his hand back and looked out over the water now visible through the leaves, flat and dark, running across their path almost like a crossroad.
And just like a crossroad it was time they made a decision. First though he delved into his pocket, pulling out two of the foil wrapped condoms. The water at the edge looked dank and foul, slow moving and poisonous, and so he took one distrustful glance at the surface, and stepped out into the middle where the eddies and lack of glossy sheen showed that the liquid was moving fast. It came up to his shins but no deeper, he noted casually.
Rolling out the condom he dipped it into the water, filling it up as much as he could; he emptied it then refilled it again, holding it together at the top but not tying it just yet. When he had done the same with the other he returned to the bank where Dus was watching him in silence and handed them both over while he located the iodine tablets.
After dropping one tablet into each condom he took them back off the braided boy, tied a tight knot in the loose end, and slipped them into his bag.
Duo was still looking at him so he explained. “Each condom can hold up to a litre of water, the iodine purifies it so that we won’t catch anything from it. You should do the same, our water bottles won’t last forever. Actually,” he pulled out his bottle, noting that it felt very light, “We should refill these too, while we have a chance.” He threw back the last dreg and stepped out into the river again.
On the bank Duo watched, feeling strangely embarrassed as the real reason for the condoms now became apparent. Bloody good job they’re not flavoured, he thought as he followed Heero’s lead and opened a couple of them up.
“We can’t keep just walking like this,” he commented.
“I was thinking the same.” Heero muttered, straightening up next to him and dropping a tablet into the faintly murky water in his bottle. “We should follow the river as far as we can.” he said, rubbing a hand over the small of his back to ease an ache there. “The water won’t leave tracks.”
“What about leeches?”
“Can’t be helped. Our trouser legs are secured at the bottom tightly so they’ll have a hard time getting in. Besides,” Heero smirked coldly, “I’d much rather have a couple of blood suckers on my chest than a bullet in it.”
“Amen.”
Silence for a while.
“Are you hungry?”
“Not really,” Duo admitted, “But we should eat something anyway right?”
“The sandwich won’t keep for long in this kind of weather. It would be wrong to waste it.” Heero began to wade back to the shore. “We can eat, then decide what to do.”
It was ham. Probably would have been tasty in other circumstances, Duo figured, but sitting there for forest - or rather leaning against a tree - being attacked by insects of all shapes and sizes, waiting for a hunter to come and shoot them like animals - he wasn’t in the mood to appreciate fine cuisine.
They washed the meal down with a small mouthful of their unopened bottle of water, giving the iodine plenty of time to work on the rest. Then Heero slipped off his left shoe and held it out to Duo.
“What?”
“Wear it,” he said, “Give me yours and wear that one instead.”
“Why?” He frowned but did as he was told.
“Different patterns on the soles of our feet.” Heero stood up and stretched, brushing the seat of his pants to remove any leaf litter. “We’ve walked far enough now that it may confuse Ivana.”
“I don’t see how it could confuse her. It’ll still be showing two people, two sets of tracks. What difference will it make what shoes are on what feet?” Heero didn’t hear him though, already wading back out into the centre of the river again. With a sigh Duo followed.
...Fucking equals Heero...
“Which way do you think?”
“They both look the same. How about right?”
“Fine.” Heero turned. “Remember, eight days, the beach at ten in the morning. Don’t take any unnecessary risks, we can’t afford it.” And with that he began to walk.
To the left.
Duo stood stunned, perfectly still, while the ever flowing water swirled past him in the same direction as Heero was going. He’s splitting us up? Suddenly the rationale behind the shoe swapping made perfect sense. If Ivana saw two different sets of prints she would assume that they were still together... it would confuse her for a while, double their chances.
...No...
Duo found himself charging after the other boy as fast as he could in the deeper water, more angry and panicked than he could ever remember being before in his life. He grabbed Heero’s arm hard enough to leave a bruise and spun him around.
“Just what the hell do you think you’re doing, Yuy?” He hissed.
Heero’s eyes were cool, no doubt he’d been expecting something like this. “We stand a better chance of making it through this if we’re apart. Two people together make more noise, leave a larger track. We‘ll travel quicker separate.”
“Maybe so. But what about if I come across you in the dark one night and fucking kill you thinking you’re Ivana? Did you think about that?”
“It won’t happen.” Heero said, wrenching his arm from Duo’s grasp, half surprised he hadn’t done it immediately. “I will be keeping far away from you, Duo.”
“You’d have to know where I was to keep away from me.”
“I’ll know.”
“Fucking liar.” He found it hard to form the words, his jaw was clenched so tightly. “You’re not a God, Yuy.”
Heero began to walk again. And somehow that was more hurtful to Duo than any words could have been.
“You’re afraid.” He called out, a last ditch attempt.
Ho... that got his attention. Heero froze, his shoulders tight with tension, before turning. The glare he threw at Duo was glacier cold.
“I’m not afraid of anything.”
“Yes you are.” Duo stepped forward slowly, a sudden light of understanding in his whole posture. “I don’t know what of yet, but you’re afraid of something.”
“You’re wasting time Duo. If you want to stay here then fine but I’m going.”
“You’re changing the subject.”
Heero strode off once more. Duo followed again but this time Heero tried to jerk his arm out of the grip even before Duo knew he’d reached out for him.
It was a mistake.
Heero’s foot turned on one of the rocks on the bed of the river and, caught off guard and off balance, he fell backwards into the water. And of course, Duo, who was still holding on to Heero’s arm, followed him under the surface with an explosion of bubbles.
The water closed over their heads for the briefest of moments then they pushed back up, gasping, soaking through and shocked. Heero was furious. He shoved Duo off him and sat up properly, coughing up some of the water he’d managed to swallow.
“Idiot!”
Duo spluttered a little as he collected himself, floundering around in the shallow waterherehere was a stinging sensation on his shin where he’d hit it against the rocks, probably meant the skin had been broken. “Oh so I’m the idiot now, am I?” He coughed.
“Yes! Do you have any idea what sorts of things could be in this water?” Heero choked out, still coughing slightly, “Bakayarou!”
At this Duo saw red. “Actually Yuy I don’t have any idea what sorts of things are in this water,“ he growled, “It might have escaped your attention but not all of us have been trained in survival techniques.”
“You don’t know?” The fire of anger in Heero’s eyes fizzled out without even a splutter as the cold waters of confusion swept over him - feeling remarkably like the cold waters of the river they were currently sitting in. “But didn’t G--”
“G gave me enough training to be able to handle a Gundam, that’s all. Jeez Heero not all of us were trained to be soldiers, you know? I was living my life on the streets of L2 before this... the Urban jungle I’d be fine in... but this... Hell no. sat sat back on his haunches, watching as Heero brushed his hair back off his face. “I haven’t got the faintest idea of how to survive in this, Heero.” It hurt to admit it.
“It’s not much different...”
“Are you kidding?”
“Survival of the fittest,” Heero shrugged, “If it was just against the forces of nature we might stand a chance.”
“But it’s not, is it.” Duo murmured.
“I still think we would be better off splitting up.” Heero argued stubbornly.
“Look Heero, apart from the whole ‘one of us might accidentally kill the other’ problem, just how well do you think we’ll do not knowing if the other was safe, or even alive?” Duo watched Heero’s eyes carefully, looking for even the briefest flicker. “The shoes trick is a good idea but it wouldn’t fool Ivana for long... she’d work out what we’d done, who knows, she might even try to play us against each other.”
Heero took a deep breath, the action pulling his wet shirt across his back. “Safety in numbers?”
“Aye.” Duo grinned, “There’s a reason it’s ’divided we fall’ ‘Ro. No idea why J would teach you to do something like that anyway.”
“Hn.” Heero blinked, then rose to his feet suddenly in a cascade of dripping water and curses. Duo watched him in surprise.
“What?”
“Leeches.”
“Shit!” He leapt up and began to look himself over frantically. “Are there any on me? Can you see them?”
“Relax Duo,” Heero smirked, “Turn around and lift your braid, let me have a look. They won’t hurt you.”
“Yeah just suck my blood.” Duo remarked bitterly.
“Do you have something against animals that drink blood?” Heero asked, raising Duo‘s shirt and tank top in order to examine his back. “You hate mosquitoes, the ‘bee things’, and now leeches.”
“Vampiric bastards!” Duo muttered with a shudder at the thought, “Are there any there?”
Heero dropped the shirt, letting it fall back against Duo’s back with a wet thwack. Leaning forward slightly he murmured his words into the braided boy‘s ear. “What would you do if I said yes?”
“WHAT?” Duo spun, wide eyed to meet Heero’s smirk. “Bastard!” he fumed when he realised thceptception.
“You’re clean Maxwell.” Heero said, “No flies - or leeches - on you.”
Duo snorted, “So which way are we going?” He made sure to stress the ‘we’ so that Heero would know that there was no way they were going to separate. Heero pondered for a while.
“Why did you choose right?” he asked finally.
“Because it’s upstream.” Duo answered immediately. “Going downstream is the easy route, going with the flow and with the slope. Ivana wouldn’t think we would take the hard way.”
“Hmm... possibly.” Heero said. “Stay here for a second. I’ll be back,” he stressed when Duo ignored him and took a determined step after him.
“No way Jose.” Duo shook his head. “You obviously don’t trust me I doI don’t trust you ‘Ro.”
...And ain’t that the truth...
“Fine. Come on then.” Heero began to walk downstream in silence. Duo was annoyed and a little upset that Heero had asked for his opinion on the river route when it was plain to see that he was still going to go in the direction he wanted anyway.
After ten minutes of walking Heero stopped and began to make his way over to the far shore. Duo followed diligently but a glance from Heero made him stop.
“I will come back. Just wait...trust me.”
“Hn.” But he stopped and waited, watching as Heero clambered up the bank and walked off into the forest at an angle, still heading slightly to the left, downhill. The foliage closed behind him, enveloping him from sight and Duo was left standing alone, feeling horribly exposed and suddenly cold as the wind blew against his damp clothes.
Ten minutes passed slowly and Heero didn‘t return.
...you bastard Yuy... Duo turned and began to wade slowly back, following the path he wanted to take. Who needs you anyway, he thought, kicking at the water in sudden anger.
He was too gullible! He knew Heero wanted to split up, and yet he’d just let him wander off into the jungle like some trusting fool.
...Trust me...
A sudden rustling from the shoreline made him turn, his knife drawn before the spin was even half executed. About fifty feet down the river bank a tree branch was shaking slightly, a couple of leaves dropping off to float lazily down to the water’s surface. Duo crouched in readiness for the unexpected.
And it was certainly unexpected when Heero came into view, shimmying along the branch carefully.
...What the?...
He sheathed the knife without really looking, too intent on watching Heero swing down eticetically so that he was hanging from the branch by his hands, his feet dangling about four feet from the water. Then he let go and dropped easily down.
He made everything look so simple.
Duo strode back towards him, making sure to display his curiosity on his face. Heero dusted off his hands as he walked to meet him, unable to keep from smirking at a job well done.
“I made a few tracks... som some footprints from both shoes, cut some leaves, then I headed towards a rock and came back using the trees. She’ll think we’re heading in that direction if she finds it.” He began to walk back the way they had come.
“Laying a false trail.” Duo nodded, feeling a warmth inside as they followed the direction he had wanted.
“Hai.” Heero said, “You’re right, she’s more likely to believe we would take the downhill route, especially as it leads to the shore. The inland route is going to be slower and harder going. We’ve wasted enough time as it is...we need to pick up the pace,” he glanced at his watch quickly before walking a little faster. “We still have five hours before Ivana leaves, should be enough time to get some serious distance between us.”
This time they walked side by side.
Equals.
