Chapter 7: The Rose of The Ocean
Mariah stared at the top of the ceiling dreamily. She had lied in that position for hours, thinking frantically on what matter had just taken place. She thought intensively about her mother’s opinion on Ray and Lee’s heartbroken expression when she told him the news. She could imagine Lee’s eyes grow, and his face pinch, as if to hold back the large tears tricking down his cheek.
Mariah smiled at the thought, but her smile grew to a frown, as she thought of the seriousness of this. Her mother would beat her, along with Lee, if she broke up the wedding.
Mariah quickly shut her eyes, and turned over as she heard the door to her room open. She could hear the course shoes walk over toward her bed. Mariah slightly twitched as she felt the dark shadow of the figure cast over her.
“She wasn’t there before.” She heard a high-pitched voice snarl.
“Well, we can’t say anything to her now.” She heard a course, low voice utter. “We’ll have to ask her in the morning where she was.”
“No, Lee!” the womanly voice rose. “YOU ARE GOING TO BE HER HUSBAND TALK TO HER!”
Mariah wondered desperately if she should ‘awaken’ now from her mother’s voice. She could feel the beads of sweat run down her face. Such a dilemma she had put herself into.
Quickly Mariah made up her mind and tossed over in her bed. She moaned, as if to just wake up from a long nap and rubbed her eyes dreamily and quickly turned to face Dian and Lee.
Lee looked sober and tired. His eyes drooped with a faulty appearance and his posture was limb and crooked. Dian was alert. Her eyes were blazing with hatred.
“Where were you when I came back here young lady?” Dian asked through clenched teeth.
Mariah hesitated and quickly responded. “I was in the nurses suite, I felt so sick.”
Mariah clenched her side, as if to be in pain.
Dian’s face occupied a disgusted look as she asked. “Are alright now?”
Mariah stared at Dian for a moment. Her eyes were fiendish and forceful. Mariah could only imagine what Dian would do if she had told her where she had really been.
“Yes,” Mariah yawned. “I think I’m alright.”
“Fine,” Dian sneered, as she grabbed Lee’s arm. “We’ll be leaving.”
Mariah nodded and watched as both aristocrats left the room in silence.
“That was close.” Mariah thought and fell on top of her bed. She couldn’t tell them, ever. Her and Ray were forbidden to be together.
“I’ll have to tell him tomorrow.” Mariah thought as she drifted into a long slumber. But as she did so, all she could think of was the warmth and comfort of his lips. Mariah wouldn’t stand for anyone else and that was the way love behaved. She couldn’t marry Lee. She just couldn’t.
The maid kindling the fire awoke Mariah in her bed. She looked around in a daze and found herself to be under the covers of the bed. She glanced around at the maid confused, at why she was under them.
The maid seemed to read her expression and she mumbled while the fire crackled in its place. “Master Lee came in and tucked you in dear.”
Mariah’s eyes widened as she heard the words. Yuck, Lee had touched her romantically. Mariah quickly shooed the maid from the room and was changed in a matter of minutes.
She quickly ran out of her room and into the suite. The room seemed desolate so Mariah tiptoed into the hallway and gently hut the door. She smiled at her success and then she ran down to the lower level where she prayed Ray would be.
“I need to tell him we can’t be and last night was the last.” Mariah thought as she ran down the cold hallway.
The hallway was frozen and unsuitable for living. Mariah breaths could be seen as she ran through the air.
“Ray!” Mariah stated as she knocked on the door she hoped to be his. “Ray, Ray!”
She gasped and backed away as a figure came from the room. It was the charcoal-haired boy. He stared at her and glanced over into the room.
“Do you know what time it is?” He mumbled grumpily. “It’s seven in the morning. Come back at nine.”
He began to turn and close the door, but Mariah persistently grabbed his shoulder and whirled him around.
“No.” She stated forcefully. “I need to speak to Ray now. It is of utmost importance.”
The man’s eyes began to swell of anger. “WHAT DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND.”? He began.
“Shh,” A hand came out and covered the man’s mouth. “Go back to sleep, Kai. I’ll handle this.”
Mariah smiled at the sound of the low gruff voice. “Ray!” She laughed as he closed the door behind him. He looked as any man would in the morning. His hair was untidy and frizzy, his eyes looked exhausted, the only thing peculiar about him was the folder-like object he clasped in his hand. Mariah giggled as Ray wiped some sleep from his eyes. But as soon as she realized why she was here, her voice faded and her warm grin turned to a serious frown.
Ray stared curiously at her, but merely brushed it off with one of his smirks.
“Um. Why are you here so early?” He asked, while halfway through a yawn.
Without even asking his question Mariah merely stated. “C’mon.”
“Wait, I should put this..” Ray trailed off as Mariah quickly grabbed his arm and pulled him up to the higher deck.
“We need to talk.” She began, as she smoothed her skirt.
“Are you sure I’m supposed to be up here?” Ray asked, as he glanced over his shoulder, waiting for someone to oppose his lingering.
“Yes, as long as it is with me.” Mariah sneered. “But we really need to talk.”
“Okay.” Ray agreed. “We’ll talk.”
Mariah took a deep breath. She could feel the tension swell in the pit of her stomach. What could she say? She loved him so dearly how could she give him up?
“Ray, about last night..” Mariah began hoping Ray would understand.
“Yea.” He stated in a collective tone. “What about it?”
“Well, that can never happen again.” Mariah forced from inside her gut. But as she thought of what she had said, it seemed the sensation had just grown stronger.
Mariah could feel Ray’s piercing eyes glaring at her. She could see his cool demeanor start to diminish as he shouted. “Oh, I understand now. You’re too good for me aren’t you?”
Mariah shook her head and pleaded. “No, Ray that’s not true.”
“Oh, don’t worry, we POOR, PATHETIC folk don’t have any feelings, so you can just drill us into the dirt.” Ray shouted, hidden tears swelling in his amber eyes.
“Ray, no that isn’t it!” Mariah screamed as tears spilled down her cheek.
Ray froze as he watched Mariah bury her eyes beneath her hands. She snuffled and gently stated. “I’m afraid.”
Ray closed his eyes in meditation for a moment and almost in an instant he opened them. He spoke quietly as he stated. “Don’t worry Mariah; there isn’t anything to be afraid of.”
“Lee.” Mariah whispered, her moans more painful then ever.
Ray smiled and wiped away Mariah’s tears from her eyes.
“Lee doesn’t scare me, nor does your mother.” Ray laughed, jokingly. “Lee is a momma’s boy and your mom wouldn’t swing a punch, that would be barbaric.”
Mariah smiled as Ray conjured up the words. Only he could make a bitter moment end happily.
Ray glanced around and quickly pulled from a vase that a waiter had walked by with a rose.
“Here, my dear.” He bowed. “For you, isn’t it such a beautiful morn?”
Mariah giggled as she daintily took the rose from Ray’s grasp.
The rose was innocent and yet deadly. It rose was coated with water droplets making it sparkle in the early sun’s rays. The pedals were a dark shade of red that contrasted with the dark emerald of the stem. But placed on the stem were thorns that pierced the air dangerously.
“Oh, it’s beautiful.” Mariah stared enchantingly.
“Yes.” Ray agreed. “But as beautiful as the flower may be, it is yet hazardous and can bite or prick the life from anyone. And as it feeds from your blood, the rose seems to turn a darker shade of red.”
Mariah stared at him intensively as he spoke the confusing words.
“Wha-?” She began, but was interrupted.
“Mariah, you are my rose.” Ray smiled. “You are so fair and good-natured, only trying to do the right thing, but either path you choose you will prick someone’s finger, either mine or Lee’s. But it’s your choice and I will not decide for you.”
Mariah stared and thought. The lingering appearance of her mother’s talk haunted the depths of her mind. Mariah closed her eyes and desperately tried to shake the image of her mother badgering her into a marriage she didn’t want.
“Ray.” Mariah stated as she frantically ran into his chest. “I don’t want you to go, rather I go with you.”
“I’m not going anywhere Mariah, ever, I’ll always be with you.” Ray soothed, as he gently brushed a strand of hair from Mariah’s face.
Mariah smiled, but was poked irritatingly by the corner to Ray’s folder.
“What’s this?” She asked, as she grabbed it from Ray.
“Oh, nothing.” Ray replied while reaching for the foreign object. “Just some of my work.”
Mariah quickly turned from Ray and giggled, as if a child. “Well, then I want to see it.”
Ray quickly pounced for it, but Mariah was too quick and dodged the assault. She quickly pulled the sketches from the portfolio and stared at them in awe.
The pictures were of women, bare of their clothes. All the women were draped with sheets or they wore necklaces.
“You loved these women?” Mariah asked, somewhat full of jealousy.
“No.” Ray stated. “I was never in love with anyone I painted.”
“Oh,” Mariah began, relieved. “You are brilliant. Did you go to art school?”
Ray turned to her and laughed. “You think art school helps anyone become an artist. You are born with the talent.”
Mariah smiled, “So you were born with it then?”
Ray smirked. “Yes, but not only do you have to be born with it, you have to practice, as did.”
Mariah chuckled, as she stared at the sketches. “I can see that!”
Both burst into a laugh fit. Mariah smiled and thought, “Nothing can fade this grin or shed darkness on this moment; nothing can scare me now!” But something did, something always does.
