When Rei walked in he found Takao looking up at him with bleary, red eyes. “Jin…” he said as he stared at Rei. “I’ve made a huge mistake… I can’t love you.”
Rei just stared for a moment unable to believe what Tyson was saying. He had tried so hard and now this?
“Why not?”
“Jin, I think I’ve always loved your brother. I just can’t do this to his memory.” Takao stared at the ground. “You understand that, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Rei gave a nod. Damn! He had worked so hard to get Takao and now this happened. “I’ll be taking a plane home tomorrow.”
Rai was beyond amused as he watched the ‘woman’ angrily kick a box. “And you can’t reverse this?”
“I had a damn surgery Rai!” Rei snapped as he put his hands on his hips. “It’s not a reversible thing!”
Mao giggled from her seat as she eyed her much more feminine friend. “Well… Kiki might be desperate enough to date you like that…” Her gold eyes turned up as she eyed Rei. “Maybe you could be a cross-dresser.”
Rei slammed his hand down. “A cross-dresser! Are you nuts?” He jerked his thumb towards his breasts that were threatening to snap the buttons of his normal clothes. “These are a little hard to hide!”
“No one ever told you to get them so big Rei,” Mao raised an eyebrow with a wicked grin. “Or should I call you Jin now?”
Kiki snorted from high up in a tree as he held a kitten, stroking its fur. “I hate being the voice of reason here, but Rei, wouldn’t the smartest thing be to tell Takao the truth?”
Rei’s jaw dropped. “Say what?” He stuck his hand out and shook a finger. “No way, I don’t have a death wish.”
“Well, Rei, you did say that Kai already knows.” Kiki shrugged his shoulders. “If Takao really loves you he’ll have to forgive you for being such an idiot. He forgave you for every other stupid thing you’ve done.”
“Then he must really love him, he’s always an idiot,” Rai muttered under his breath.
“Shove it already Rai!”
“Just tell him!” Mao finally said as she waved a finger in Rei’s face.
“Tell him what? Sorry I lied to you, I’m not really dead, I just got a new hole sliced in me?”
Mao blinked a few times, staring at Rei for a few minutes. “You told him what?!?” She hissed, her eyes narrowing into the slits. “You bastard…” she seethed. “You’re lucky I don’t kill you right now for what you’ve done to him!”
“Mao…” Rai began as Rei backed up a few steps, ready to flee for his life. Nothing would save him now that Mao had set her sights on him and was sharpening her claws for a skewer.
The other Blade Breakers could not recall a time they had ever seen Tyson so upset as he spilled the entire story from Jin’s first appearance to when he had sent her away. They all listened intently, except for Kai who was snoozing under a tree, a stalk of grass between his lips.
They all knew better than to think he hadn’t heard a single word and each and every one could guess the Russian knew more than he was letting on. They also knew they would never know what, unless it was in untranscribable riddles.
However the others were similarly mortified by Rei’s death and were ready to go to China to ask why they had not been informed of the funeral.
Which is how they ended up in China, sitting around the low table, the tension thick enough to be cut with a knife.
