Death and His Pilot
Chapter
“We’re nearly impossible to find unless one has the exact location, which changes constantly,” Shinigami said. “No form of radar can see the school, and the gap itself is hidden by the islands. I don’t know how Rill found us, or how a royal ship got through without being shot down.”
“We have space colonies back home too, but they’re nothing like this,” Heero whispered. “Did you build them?”
“No, our first students did when we built the school,” Shinigami said. “No outside government has ever been able to rule us here, and every inhabitant down to those children you saw will defend our home if attacked. We call it ‘Sersirrin.’ It’s the universal word for haven.”
“Duo used to call a place on Earth New Sersirrin,” Heero mused, watching a few silver dots flit between colonies, ships, and fast ones if he was correct on the distance between some of the colonies. It was an eight-hour flight between just Earth and L1, which was the closest colony of the five to the planet.
“One almost always forms when one of us stays in one place for too long,” Shinigami said with a nod. “Rouges, those like us who don’t follow outside rule, tend to coagulate together near us, like children around their older and stronger siblings.”
Or like worshippers to a god, Heero thought, but he didn’t voice the idea. “Can we go back in? I’m not used to being in bare space.”
Shinigami smiled. “Or course. Yami will probably be wondering where we wandered off to anyway and we need to prepare to leave for my sister’s place. You never know when a faerie will decide to show up. They plan things to be unpredictable to those left out of the loop. The faerie like to keep people off balance and confused. That tactic is one of the only things we agree with them on.” The immortal flew around the entirety of the school, holding firmly onto Heero the whole time. Despite the fact that he knew there couldn’t possibly be one in space, Heero could have sworn that he felt wind blowing through his hair as they flew. Shinigami stopped abruptly, pointing toward a shimmering streak moving against the black. “See what I told you? They’re already coming.” Heero stiffened in his grim. “Don’t worry, Heero, I’m not letting them near you. Change of plans. We’re going to the colonies. There’s this bathhouse on Kree that you’ll love.”
The streets on Kree were packed full of people coming and going from shops and the sort. Nearly every face turned up and smiled as Shinigami was sighted and a call that he was coming was taken up from what Heero could only suppose were watchtowers. Wide and curious eyes stared up at Heero in the assassin’s arms. The human was shifted to one arm as the other shot out to grab hold of a pole, swinging around and down so that Shinigami’s feet landed soundly on the ground.
“Keep a hold onto me,” he instructed, setting Heero down beside him.
Heero gasped in awe as the light that’d vanished once they’d touched the atmosphere of the colony once again wrapped around the braided man, grasping Heero’s hand as he gripped Shinigami’s as well. Right before the mortal’s eyes, black wings began to dissolve into thin air like sugar in warm water. He blinked. For a moment, it had seemed as though the rest of the black-clad back had intending to follow the path of the wings before it firmed up once again, cutting off the heightened glow that had to emit from the skin revealed through an open oval in the back of Shinigami’s tunic.
“Come on, it’s this way,” Shinigami said, tugging gently on Heero’s hand to lead him down a crowded street. Thankfully for the mortal, as even the people on the colony were much taller than he, they cleared a path for his guide and therefore he as well. Whispers followed the pair as Shinigami began to point out various buildings to Heero, who had to walk quickly to keep up despite the fact that Shinigami was obviously trying to move slowly for his benefit. Several times, they paused for the violet-eyed man to have a brief conversation with people they passed, one of which looked like it was about to become a full fledged argument before a female, he thought even though she was larger, of the same species came out of a building and roughly hauled her companion away into the next one.
“She’s courting him,” Shinigami explained, bending down to whisper into Heero’s ear as though it were a big secret that anyone could overhear (and understand) otherwise. “Mertrin females get really possessive of potential mates around this season. A small moon’s worth of them migrated over here about two decades ago, so you’ll be seeing a lot of them, especially the males since they’re more common. Wait a couple of months and every single one will vanish into the underground nests to brood. I’ll tell you, it wreaks havoc on the concentration of our students, either worrying about their mates or resisting the call to breed for the females, and the males miss class entirely if they’ve mated, since they’re the ones with the kids.” ‘Ah, Lady Ko, a pleasure to see you again.’
‘And you, Lord Shinigami,’ the woman said, her blue eye looking at Shinigami while the red one was fixed on Heero, who sidestepped behind his lover to-be. ‘Who is your companion? A child? No, his face structure is all wrong, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen his kind before, which is very surprising considering the sort of traffic I get through here. He’s very beautiful though.’ Her eye finally left Heero and he was able to breath again. ‘So what are you doing out here at this time of day? Slacking on your duties again?’
‘No, just avoiding a messenger,’ Shinigami said with a laugh. ‘Honestly, Lady Ko, you should know me by now. If I was skipping out on work, I’d have come much earlier to spend the entire day soaking in your lovely tubs. His is Heero, my fiancé. However, that’s a detail that I would prefer to not leave your tongue or hand as of yet. You understand, of course.’
‘Of course, Lord Shinigami, every secret is safely sealed once it passes through my ears and eyes,’ she said, bowing her head briefly in a sigh of respect. ‘I only every spied under the orders of my husband, and he is now dead and gone, forsaken ones spit in his ashes if they can be found in the sewage.’
Heero hid a smile as the woman forcefully pushed Shinigami into the building, where even from the entrance he could feel the mists common of a bathhouse, perfumed sweetly but thankfully not overpoweringly. However, the smile vanished behind a yelp of surprise as he was grabbed around the waist by her free arm and carried with them like a duffle bag. A younger girl followed at Ko’s signal. Upon arriving in a room with a large tub set into the floor and already steaming, the pair of women set upon the males and stripped them quickly and completely before shoving them into the water. By the time Heero and Shinigami had surfaced, they were gone without a trace.
“Hate it when she does that,” Shinigami said, shaking the water from his bangs as he reached around to grab the end of his braid and unraveled it so that wet hair plumed around him in the water, wrapping around Heero’s arms whenever he got too close, which was often because of the link. “Now where’d she leave those soaps…?”
