“How is he?” Une asked as she stepped into the infirmary.
Wufei turned his head and looked up to her as she stood by the bed. “Better,” he answered weakly.
Heero clenched his jaw. He wasn't better at all. He'd had two more agonizing episodes and he grew weaker with each one. All he'd managed to keep down were several sips of soup. Nothing solid.
“Has Duo left yet?” Wufei asked.
“Yes, just a few minutes ago, with Davis and Barton.”
He looked back to Heero. “You should have gone with them.”
He raised an eyebrow. “If two former Gundam pilots and a top ranking Preventer can't handle a middle aged man they've got more problems than I care to think about. They'll be fine.”
Une nodded. “Where's Sally?”
“She ran another test,” Wufei said sourly. “Now she's checking the results.” Une turned to find her and Wufei said as loudly as he could, which wasn't very loud, “Tell her she's never ramming that torture device down my throat again.”
Heero snorted. “She's trying to find a way to save your life.”
He sighed. “What's the point?”
Heero sat on the edge of the bed. “Wufei, don't say that. It would hurt a lot of people if you weren't around anymore.” He gently gripped Wufei's chin and tilted his head back to look into his eyes. “It would hurt me.”
Wufei gazed at him silently before pulling from his grasp. “I know. I've known for a while.”
Startled cobalt eyes shot to onyx. “What? Why didn't you say anything?”
He licked his lips and glanced away. “I... I'm not ready for a relationship. I tried to work up the nerve to say something, but... I panicked, I guess. Good grief, Heero, I almost killed you once.”
Heero released a half-hearted chuckle. “I'm pretty sure I got in your way at the time.” He brushed silken raven locks from Wufei's forehead. “You were dying on the inside and I couldn't allow that to happen.”
He looked back to Heero. “I have absolutely no experience outside of... well, you know.”
Heero shook his head. “No, I don't. You implied, but you never told me.”
He squirmed a little. “You don't really need to know, do you?”
“Only if you want to tell me.”
Wufei stared up at Heero, suddenly wishing more than anything that he'd been honest with the Japanese man years ago. To hell with what he did or didn't deserve. He could be dead within two weeks and Heero deserved to know the truth.
“It happened about six months after he initially made his 'offer'. I was careless on a mission and blacked out for a while. When I came to I was in a doctor's office.” His lips twisted slightly in a sneer. “In his office... Strapped to a table and naked. He thought once he took me that I'd suddenly decide I enjoyed... what he was doing.”
He bit his lip. “The only way I could think of to escape was to make him think I did enjoy it so he'd untie me. When he did, all bets were off. I grabbed him, sliced it off with my sword, and ran.”
“I'm surprised you didn't kill him.”
Wufei shrugged. “That didn't sit well with me. I mean, people that do what he did go to jail, not the electric chair. But I made sure he'd never be able to hurt anyone that way again.”
Heero nodded. “You seem to be able to handle it all right.”
Wufei laughed softly, barely a whisper of air through his lips. “I'm too tired to put too much emotion to it. I've had some not so good moments over it, but for the most part... I didn't want to spend the rest of my life crying over something bad, and I didn't. But then I figured out how you felt about me, and when I toyed with the idea of making a move I felt... tainted.”
He tilted his head to the side. “And that's when the drinking started,” he guessed. Wufei nodded. “I'm sorry he hurt you and I'm sorry I don't know how to help you. But the past is over.” He licked his lips. “Give us a chance, Wufei.”
He laced his fingers through Heero's. “If I ever get out of here, I will.”
Heero shook his head. “You will get better.”

Duo sat on the table in the middle of the room, swinging his legs. The abandoned one-room cabin had recently been cleaned up and furnished somewhat. A medical table sat in the center and on one wall there was a desk and a vid-phone.
On the outside he was sure he would look normal when Knight showed up, but on the inside he was ready to jump out of his skin. It wasn't unusual for Marcus to be later than him to these meetings, but the whole thing had Duo on edge. The vid-phone in the corner chimed and he hopped from the table to answer it.
“Marcus, what's up? Am I late? Too early?”
The man grinned. “No, Duo, you're right on time.”
Dread fell over him. “What do you mean?”
“How's Chang doing? The pain should be getting nearly intolerable around now.”
Duo gripped the table in a white-knuckled grasp. “What have you done?”
His grin became pure evil. “A little device that I learned how to perfect by practicing on you.” Duo's lips peeled back in a snarl. “Now Duo, that boy made me suffer in the most inhumane way. I couldn't just kill him off quickly. He deserves to suffer as much as I have before he dies.”
“What did he do to you to warrant you killing him?”
His grin fell. “That's none of your concern. It's your own fault, you know.”
He started. “What?”
“Everyone knows your face. Knows you were a Gundam pilot. When I found you on the verge of death, I had to save you. It was my last hope to find Chang.” His grin returned. “And you led me right to him. It took me years to perfect the right punishment. I had the device right, but I didn't want to promote healthy function. I tweaked and tweaked and now he can die in agony.”
“You sick bastard!”
He laughed. “Thanks for all your help, Duo. I don't really need you anymore.”
The vid cut off and Duo backed away, feeling as if he'd just been doused with ice water. This couldn't be happening. It couldn't... He turned and ran into Blake's chest. Only then, as the taller man's arms wrapped around him, did he realize he was shaking. He wasn't sure if it was due to anger, fear or both. He walked woodenly back to the car where Trowa waited, none of them said a word as they drove back to headquarters.
Trowa and Blake had heard everything through the bug and they were frustrated and angered. They were back to square one with no clue how much time Wufei had left. Blake cast worried glances to his lover. Duo hadn't said a word, his hands were clenched tightly in his lap and his jaw was set. Violet eyes gazed out the window, narrowed in thought.
They headed straight for the infirmary, Trowa following Duo and Blake into Wufei's room. Heero stood, took one look at Duo's pale face and fell back heavily to his chair. “What happened?”
Duo swallowed and looked to Wufei. “It's my fault,” he forced out through a tight throat. “I didn't know. He saved me because I was a Gundam pilot, because he hoped I'd lead him to you... and I did.”
Wufei stared at him silently for a long moment, too shocked at first to speak, and then he ground his teeth. “He used you to get to me.” Duo nodded, face guilty, and Wufei sighed. “It isn't your fault. You couldn't have known.”
“He used an implant like mine, but adjusted it to give pain instead.”
“Nothing has shown up on CT scans or MRIs,” Sally said from the doorway.
He shook his head, trying to keep his thoughts coherent. Trying to figure out if the numbness in his hands was panic or something worse. He clenched and released them. “You wouldn't. They're made of some kind of material that sorta... meshes with the organ around it. You'd see it if you looked at it, but a scan like those won't. No scans would. You'd have...to cut him...”
Blake grabbed his arm as he began to fall. “Duo?”
“Geez, you boys have got to quit falling apart on me,” Sally muttered as she moved in to check Duo out. “What's wrong?”
Blake sat him in a chair and she knelt in front of him. “There's nothing you can do, Sal. I have Lendring's.” (1)
Her jaw dropped. “No one with that lives passed twenty.” She began examining his hands and forearms.
“I have implants that encourage muscle function and help my immune system.”
“Th-that's not approved yet.”
His lips lifted in the corners. “Well I found someone who didn't care.” He glanced to Wufei. “If I'd known why he did it, I would never have-”
“Stop blaming yourself.”
Sally shoved the conversation aside for a moment. “The implants are failing?”
“I don't know, but the timing is too coincidental. Maybe he... shut them off or something.”
She pursed her lips and stood. “Then I'll see if I can get them functioning again.”
Duo stood on unsteady feet and Blake was there instantly, ducking under his arm. “I can walk, you know.”
“Of course you can,” he said without releasing him.
They made it as far as the spare bed in the room before Duo completely sagged against Blake with a soft exhalation of breath.
“Duo?” Blake tried to stay calm, but that was impossible.
Sally hissed through her teeth. “Get him on that bed now!” She kicked the door open. “I need help in here!” Wufei tried to sit up as Duo was hooked up to oxygen and various other machines, but Heero laid him back down. He glared at the Japanese man and Heero gave in, helping him to sit up and allowing him to lean against his chest. A sluggish heartbeat filled the room as Duo was hooked up to the monitor.
“What's happening?”
“It takes over in spells where organs and muscles in the body essentially shut down. It can affect one or more... or all at a time.”
“You mean...” Heero couldn't say it.
“Meaning we may have to keep his lungs and heart working until the episode passes.” The heartbeat flat-lined and she cursed, jumping on the table and pushing her hands into Duo's chest.
“Defib?” One of the nurses asked.
She shook her head. “Shocking it won't help. I just need to keep it somewhat pumping.”
Blake leaned against the wall and slid to the floor. That's what Duo had been hiding. He'd been afraid for days that the disease was returning, but, as always, he shoved himself aside and focused on the task at hand. Finding Knight and getting answers to help Wufei had been his single-minded focus. Blake cursed himself for not realizing what his lover was hiding.
After three minutes Duo sucked in a breath and Sally sat back as his heart began beating stronger and of its own accord.
Slowly, violet eyes blinked and focused on Sally. A weak grin came to his pale face. “Are doctors supposed to ride their patients?” he whispered.
Sally rolled her eyes. “Only if it saves their lives.” She slid her feet to the floor. “How are you feeling now?”
“Like Deathscythe fell on me.”
She put a hand on his shoulder. “I will get the implants working again, Duo.”
He squeezed that hand with a tenth of his usual strength. “I know.” He watched her leave the room and closed his eyes. It had been years since he'd gone through one of those spells and it was almost more painful, mentally at least. He'd had a new lease on life. He'd had a future. Blake pushed from the floor and sat on the bed, gripping Duo's hand.
“Duo?”
He looked to the side and took in his friends frightened faces. “Sorry, guys. I should have warned you about that.” He grunted. “But I was kinda in denial.”
Wufei gripped at Heero's arm around his waist. “How often do those spells happen?”
“There's no set pattern to them. I once had four in one day and then didn't have any for a month. But those were partial.” His lips quirked in a mirthless smile. “It was really good the symptoms waited to set in until after the war, huh?”
Duo and Wufei gazed at each other, both struggling to accept what was happening, both wondering which of them would be the first to go. Duo smiled softly as he realized the position Wufei and Heero were in. “Finally made your move, Heero?”
“Something like that.”
Trowa seemed to snap out of it and turned to Heero. “I'm sorry, but we're down two operatives. Heero, I need you to help me find Knight.”
“Bring a couple of laptops down here,” Duo said. “Heero and I can work just as well here as at our desks.” He glanced to Sally as she returned to the room. “I could work at my desk, though. I can function between spells.”
“I'm sure you can, but we'll discuss that later.” She set several syringes down and handed Duo a mask.
He grimaced. “Sally-”
“No arguments. I have no clue how fast your immune system will drop. You can die of a cold as easily as a spell. Excuse me, Davis.”
He moved from the bed and she inserted a needle into Duo's arm. He put the mask on as she began injecting the different vials one at a time, listing them off their purpose as she went. “Boosts immune system, promotes muscle function, helps circulation, fights fatigue, helps regularity...” He blushed on that one. Who wanted their friends to know they were about to have problems going to the bathroom if their bladders decided to quit? “Brain function,” she continued, “and various vitamins.” She pulled the needle out and covered it with a Band-Aid.
“That would go quicker if you mixed them all together.”
She nodded. “I will, I was just more concerned with getting them in you as quickly as possible.” She sat back and grabbed his hand, beginning to check the temperature, circulation, and dexterity. He glared at her and jerked it back.
“Sally, I'm in the early,” she raised an eyebrow and he amended the statement, “okay, early-middle stage. I've got time. You need to get what Knight put into Wufei out before it kills him.”
She looked from Duo to Wufei and sighed. “All right, what am I looking for? When I sewed him up I didn't see anything out of the ordinary and you said earlier that I should be able to see it.”
He took her hand and put it to the base of his skull. “Feel that?”
“It... it's just your skull. What am I supposed to feel?”
“It's a plate, about an inch in diameter and a millimeter thick. If you don't know what you're looking for, you'd pass it off as bone, but if you pay attention, you'll see the difference.”
She gave him a helpless look. “Are you saying I'm looking for stomach lining that isn't stomach lining?”
He nodded. “You can do it, Sally.”
She looked back to Wufei who nodded. “There's no other choice.”
A moment more of indecision and she firmed her resolve. “All right. Let's get you prepped for surgery.”
