It's odd the circles a mind can go through when there's nothing but silence for hours on end. Well, I guess silence isn't the exact word to use. The news played on the TV and I could hear the bustling of nurses, hospital staff, and people visiting the sick outside the relative privacy of Duo's room. But it all faded into a constant hum in the background until it wasn't enough to distract me anymore.
I've held someone I cared about in my arms before as they died, an instance I hope to never go through again. That was hard, but I wasn't in love with Meiran. I respected her, respected her strength; and I can't say with any surety it would have grown to a deeper level had we been given the chance.
Duo wasn't lying dying in my arms. He was slowly coming out of the, thankfully, short-lived coma. But all of it seems so surreal. I go through the motions. Show up where I'm supposed to be. Listen when others talk to me... and sometimes even respond. Nothing feels real and I'm beginning to wonder what the hell I'm even doing anymore.
A dark fear that's been plaguing the back of my mind suddenly explodes into a disturbing revelation. Even if he wakes up... Duo isn't coming back to me. I'm alone again, watching helplessly as my life falls apart and there's nothing I can do to change it.
I can't stay here.
******“Chang, haven't seen you in a while. What can I get you?”He rubbed his face. “Just a coke.”
The bartender raised a brow. “Not drinking tonight?”
“No, I just need to clear my head, not muddle it worse.” The man nodded and poured him the coke. Wufei moved to a corner booth and sat heavily. He rubbed his temples, hoping the impending headache would go away before it really got started.
“Fei, long time no see.”
He groaned softly. No, there was no way the headache would lessen. “Go away.”
“Aw, don't be that way.”
He cut his eyes over as the man sat across from him. “I want to be alone.”
He looked sympathetically at Wufei. “I heard about Duo's unfortunate accident. It must be hard on you to see your lover in such a state.”
Obsidian eyes dropped to the hand reaching for his arm. “You almost ruined my relationship with him once; don't make me break your arm.”
He smiled softly. “I'm not trying to ruin anything, Fei-”
“Don't call me that,” he growled.
“I just want to help.”
Wufei looked away, taking slow breaths to calm himself. “There's nothing you can do to help.”
“I can be a listening ear.”
He snorted. “And more if I let you, right?”
He raised a shoulder. “A man has needs, doesn't he?”
Wufei pushed to his feet. “I'm going to the bathroom. When I get back, I expect you to be gone.”

Quatre sat back from his computer and rubbed his tired eyes as he answered the buzz from his secretary. “Yes?”
“You have a call from Mr. Yuy.”
“Thank you.” He picked up his phone. “Hey.”
“We have a problem.”
He rubbed his eyes. It seemed that was all they had anymore. “What is it?”
“Wufei's gone.”
He straightened in his chair. “Gone?”
“Sherry, the PCA on days, said he left suddenly an hour and a half ago and hasn't come back. I tried calling the apartment and his cell but he didn't answer.”
Quatre stood. “Did you go by his apartment?”
“I had Marty run by, Wufei's car isn't there.”
He pursed his lips. “Where are you now?”
“The hospital. Duo's showing signs of coming fully around and he'll be pissed if Wufei isn't here when he does.”
“Stay there and I'll see if I can find Wufei.”
“All right.”
Quatre hung up and left the office, mind running through different options. He pulled out his cell.
“Winner residence.”
“Nancy, it's Quatre. We've had a bit of an issue come up.”
“Still haven't found Mr. Wufei?”
“No, we haven't. Heero's at the hospital and I'm going to try to find Wufei. Can you go ahead and send the staff home? I'm not sure when we'll make it there.”
“Marty's already started supper.”
He got in his car and started it. “That's fine have him finish and leave it. We can heat it up.”
“All right. Anything else I can do for you?”
“No, that's all.” He flipped his phone closed and dropped it into the passenger seat. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as he pulled out of the parking lot. Had it been anyone else but Wufei, he'd have had some idea of where to start looking. But the Chinese man hadn't pulled a disappearing act since the Mariemeia incident and Quatre didn't think joining a rebel faction would cross Wufei's mind this time.
He stopped by the apartment, just as a starting point, and knocked several times.
“He's not there.”
Quatre looked to the young girl carrying a laundry basket. “Do you know where he is?”
She shook her head, shifting the basket to her hip. “No, he ran in and back out again with a bag over his shoulder.” She bit her lip. “He didn't look very good, either. How is Duo doing?”
Quatre turned to fully face her. “I'm sorry; I didn't realize they were friends with others in their building. I'm Quatre.”
She smiled, a little shyly. “Only a hermit who lived under a rug for the last ten years wouldn't know who you were, Mr. Winner. I'm Marissa and I'm not exactly friends with Wufei, but Duo and I usually had our laundry day together.” Her smile fell. “I hated to hear that he was hurt so bad.”
Quatre nodded. “It's bad, but we have high hopes for him.”
“I'm glad to hear it.”
He glanced back to the closed door. “Do you have any idea where he might have gone?”
She chewed her lip. “Well, they were having some problems last year. Duo complained to me that whenever they fought, Wufei would go to Bar.” (1)
Quatre frowned. “What bar?”
She shook her head. “That's the name. It's on the south side of town, across the street from the Copeland Inn.”
He nodded. “Thank you.”
“I hope you find him. Duo said Wufei has a tendency for depression when left by himself. I don't know him that well, but if Duo loves him, he must be something special, right?”
Quatre smiled. “Yeah. Thanks again.”
“You're welcome.”
He left the complex and headed for the south side of the city. He rarely had a reason to go there and wasn't sure how Wufei would have found a bar so far from where they lived and worked. He pulled into the parking lot of a well-kept and rather decent looking club. It wasn't of the same caliber he was used to going to, but it seemed nice enough. He removed his tie and got out of his car, moving to the front of the line and holding out his ID. The doorman's eyes widened.
“I don't normally throw my name around, but I'm looking for a friend.”
He nodded and handed his license back. “Of course, Mr. Winner. Welcome to Bar.”
He ducked inside, eyes narrowing against the slight burn of smoke in the air. Judging by how many people were smoking, he assumed the place had a very good ventilation system in place. He waited for his eyes to adjust and then scanned the crowd.
His lips curved into a frown when he saw Wufei against the wall with a man kissing at his neck. Raven hair was loose, blocking his face from Quatre's view, and his hands were clenched on the man's shoulders. Quatre stormed over and heard the Chinese man's voice telling the man to let go before Quatre ripped him off of Wufei.
“What the fuck!?”
Quatre caught the Chinese man as he began to slide down the wall. “Wufei?”
He grabbed onto Quatre's shoulders and shoved his hair from his face. Glassy black eyes gazed at the blond as a trembling hand pointed to the man. “He... did somethin' to me,” he slurred.
Blue eyes narrowed. He didn't smell alcohol on Wufei's breath. He turned to look at the man. “What did you give him?”
“Nothing.”
Two bouncers came over. “Is there a problem here?”
“Yes.”
“No,” the man disagreed with Quatre.
The blond stared steadily at him. “I'm taking him to the hospital where he'll be tested for all known date-rape drugs. It might help your cause if you admit guilt now.”
He held up his hands. “All right, all right. I just slipped something in his soda. It just helps a person to relax. I wasn't gonna do anything to him.”
“Mr. Winner?”
He looked to the bouncer. “We'll be pressing charges. Call the-”
“No.” Wufei leaned heavily into Quatre, not quite steady on his feet. “Jus' take me to Duo.”
“Are you sure?”
He nodded. “Nothin' happened.”
Quatre sighed. “All right.”
******
Duo groaned softly as he fought, once again, through the fog that had seemed to lay heavily over him. He tried to raise his right arm but it felt heavy and wouldn't move. Belatedly, he recalled doctor's saying it was broken. He tried his left and only got it a few inches above the mattress before it was gripped in a warm hand.
“Fei?” He slit his eyes open and slowly focused on dark blue. He sighed. “Heero.”
“Yeah.”
He looked around. “Where's Fei?”
“He went out for a bit.”
Violet eyes looked back to Heero, narrowing slightly. “Where?”
“He needed to get out. He'll be back.”
Duo swallowed, sure there was something Heero wasn't saying. “When?”
“I... I'm not sure.”
He pulled his hand from Heero's and rubbed at the bandage on the side of his head. “I keep having weird dreams, Heero.”
“It's the morphine.”
“Morphine?” He closed his eyes briefly. “Can you get me off of it?”
Heero pulled the chair closer and sat. “That's something you'll have to discuss with your doctor. How are you feeling?”
He shook his head. “My head and arm really hurts... so does my side.”
Heero carefully kept his face neutral. “Is that all?”
“I-”
A knock came to the door and Quatre came in with Wufei. The Chinese man froze, staring at Duo for a long minute.
“Fei?”
He stumbled to the bed and sat on the edge. “You're awake.”
Duo frowned at the sluggish hint to his lover's voice. “Are you all right?”
Wufei sobbed softly and pressed his forehead to Duo's shoulder. “I didn't think you were gonna come back to me.”
Duo draped his left arm over Wufei's back and looked to Quatre in alarm. “What happened?”
“Someone slipped him a date-rape drug.”
Heero's eyes widened and Duo's darkened in anger. “Who?”
“Nothin' happened,” Wufei said, voice muffled against Duo's chest. “Quatre stopped him.”
“Where...” Duo cut himself off. It didn't matter where he had been; it wasn't Wufei's fault. “Are you okay?”
“Jus' don't leave me.”
Duo kissed the top of his head. “I'm not going anywhere, Fei.” His eyes dropped to where Wufei's hip lay flush to his own and he swallowed harshly. Part of him wanted to scream for someone to explain to him why the hell he didn't feel a touch he should have. But the biggest part screamed that he had to be strong for Wufei.
When his lover sat up to meet his eyes, Duo smiled. “See,” he whispered. “I'm here, aren't I?”
“Yeah.” Wufei kissed Duo's lips softly.
