Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Seventy-one
You weren’t sure how, but Bulma kept getting better. Not only was she building you a spaceship that could get to Namek, she was going to have it done right after Prom. She’d even looked upset that it would take that “long”. Apparently some of the parts had to be delivered and the capsule Corp subsidies didn’t move fast enough for her liking. To you that was amazingly quick but apparently not quick enough for her liking. You weren’t sure but you thought her impatience stemmed from wanting to reprimand Goku for something or another. Probably something to do with Vegeta seeing as he still had bandages around his ribs. Not that he really let that slow him down. Regardless of the reason she put off a energy (not in the fighting type of way) in regards to Goku being brought back finally.
Her enthusiasm was matched only by Goten who’d practically exploded with it. You were just glad that he was focusing on that instead of the fact that you were pregnant with his half-sister. Especially when he went home for the night. Gohan, in the other hand, didn’t seem nearly as ecstatic as his brother with everything going on.
After the second day of his sullen behavior you finally called him out on it. Of course you waited until it was lunch time. That way you’d been able to surprise him and grab his arm as he walked out of the classroom. You barely had to concentrate before you and he were at your studio.
“What’s been bothering you?” You asked directly.
Gohan was quiet as he stared down at you. You felt the fact that he wasn’t ignoring you, nor was he ignoring your question. Whatever his answer was it was something he had to wrestle with to put into words. So you waited; your hand would have dropped from his arm if he hadn’t held it in place with his own. In his silence, he moved your hands fro his arm and across his chest until you were above his heart.
“I don’t want you to wish my dad back,” Gohan said quietly, with a heavy heart. “And I think...I think that makes me a bad person.”
Gently you unfurled your fingers so that they were stretched out over his tightly pulled white shirt. You pressed in towards him so that he could feel each digit.
“You’ve got a good heart Gohan. I’m not sure if you could be a bad person even if you tried,” you responded calmly.
He lowered his head in a mix of shame and embarrassment. “Don’t wish him back.”
His plea was quiet. The very sound of it coming from him, so weak and pleading, hurt to hear. The words themselves made it feel worse. You had a feeling you knew why he was making this plea and that’s what really moved you. And not in a good way. Your fingers curled again; you used your loose fist to tap him. He didn’t even raise his eyes.
“I made him a promise, Gohan,” you spoke softly.
“Yeah but he won’t keep his side. I know he won’t.”
You gently tapped him again. Gohan shifted slightly as he started to look into your eyes.
“You don’t know that for sure. He deserves a chance. Besides don’t you want Goten to get to know your guys’ dad like you got to?”
“No,” he said quietly, the monosyllabic sound filled with guilt. “Not if it means that he will be with you. Because I know he won’t keep his promises. I wouldn’t.”
Well then, you supposed that said something. Your felt your heart thump a little faster. For all your bluster and talk about him staying loyal to Chichi, about staying with her as her husband, that wasn’t what you really wanted. It was just what would be right. It was what would be best for the majority of people. But Gohan was so sure that his dad wouldn’t do what was best for everyone based on the fact that in this situation he wouldn’t. That, in part, concerned you.
“I’m not that special,” you tried to tell Gohan, angling your face and smiling to try and ease the tension. “I don’t know what image of me you have in your head, but I can promise you I’m not as good as you’re imagining.”
“Stop that,” Gohan said in a slightly forceful tone. “Stop putting yourself down. You don’t get it do you? You’re perfect. I know it and my dad knows it. That’s why he’s fighting so hard to come back. That’s why he won’t keep his promises. He knows the moment you finally get how awesome you are, he won’t stand a chance because you won’t need him anymore...you could have anyone you wanted.”
His declaration made you uncomfortable. Like most people you supposed it was hard to hear all that praise. He wasn’t praising you for doing something good. He was praising your entire being. Or at least he had started to. You couldn’t help but feel like he had no idea - you weren’t as good as his mental representation of you. At best you felt like a porcelain vase with too many cracks, just barely able to keep things in. On your worst days you felt like a patchwork doll. You resembled a “human” but you were so flawed and scarred that there was no way someone could know about your every piece and not be disgusted by you.
The feeling of discomfort only escalated as Gohan continued by listing off your virtues. “Physically you're not as strong as dad, Vegeta, Broly, or myself but you have a different sort of strength. You’re nice to everyone, even the people who call you names. You’re kind and thoughtful. You’re patient. You’re gentle and understanding. Heck, you’ve practically managed to tame Broly! Even through the whole saiyaman thing...it’s my fault that everyone at school things so badly of you but you’ve never blamed me. You just accepted it and moved on. And you’re always there to remind me that things aren’t so bad, that they can still smile and have fun. You’re so stubborn and loyal to the memory of my dad and Earth that you decided to have his kid even though you could have just run away. And you’re brave where it really counts. Even though you knew what you’d be sacrificing by having the kid you did it anyways. Because that way you could stay here. No one gets it yet but you’re probably the only reason Earth hasn’t been destroyed by Broly. There’s no way that we could have defeated him this time. But you stood up to him; you beat him. Not to mention the fact that you’re brave enough to stand up to the supreme Kai.”
“It sounds good when you put it a like that,” you mumbled as you ducked your head in embarrassment. “But...most of that I did because I’m selfish. I didn’t do it for other people. I did it for myself. I’m just a creature of habit. This is my home. I don’t want to find a new one. And I was lonely - that’s why I got to know you even though I could have stayed under the radar.”
“Lonely?” Gohan asked with a frown.
You nodded, still looking down. “Uh huh. I don’t like hiding things about myself and all of the others at school would probably have freaked if I was 100 percent honest.”
You felt Gohan’s arms around you before you heard his words. “I was lonely too.”
Your heart crumbled a little at his announcement. You’d never imagined that Gohan had ever felt that lonely. He had his family around him. And he had a bunch of friends that knew all of his secrets. You never thought he’d been alone the same way you had. But you supposed there were different ways to be lonely.
“We don’t have to be alone anymore,” Gohan whispered in a tender embarrassment. “I have you, you have me. And soon you’ll have a little girl that I’ll help to raise. I can be her dad.”
His declaration send chills through your body. Not because they were said in a dark way or anything. It was just that you remembered exactly how angry Goku had seemed like at that notion. He’d felt ready to snap.
“I promised Goku he could come back and do that, Gohan. And I keep my promises.”
“Don’t. Not this one. Please. I don’t want to lose you.”
You crumbled more. How were you going to be able to do this? How were you going to be able to keep everyone happy? Even if there were three of you, you doubted that would work. They’d all fight over who got to keep all three of you. And that wasn’t counting Trunks’ misbegotten wish.
“I’m here. You won’t lose me Gohan. Bringing your dad back won’t change that.”
"It will change everything," he told you in a very honest tone.
You let out a deep breath, moving back a little so you could see his face. Gohan didn't try to cling to you as Goku might have. Which was nice seeing as it let you do what you wanted this time. You looked up at Gohan and tried to smile. It took a moment to push back the uncertainty and all the negative emotions that this moment brought up. But you did it.
"Hey, what happened to the boy that was so sure I'd marry him in two years huh? What happened?"
Gohan looked down with a serious expression. "I went a year thinking about everything. No matter how strong I get, I don't think it'll make a difference. I spent a year without you but my dad remembers spending a lot more. He won't just...back down. It won't matter if I beat him. Our fights will go on and on. And I don't want to hurt you like that. Because no matter how noble your intentions, no matter how much you want to help my family, you still love him don't you?"
Your smile wavered. You leaned back into him silently, not answering his question directly. But your lack of an answer told Gohan everything he needed to know. You still loved his dad. And while it hurt to know that at least you hadn't lied to him. Not to mention it showed him just how loyal and dedicated you were.
"Don't bring him back," Gohan whispered.
"I'll figure it out Gohan, but...I can't promise you a perfect ending."
