Dorothy*s house was behind the church, off the main street. Duo knocked, knowing that if she wasn*t home, his plans would be delayed even more, but the idea of seeing her again* of letting her see him* was almost enough to send him back to the Green Barrel to wait for Heero. He braced himself, but still wasn*t prepared.
The Inquisitor herself flung open the door without him having heard footsteps approach. "What is it?" she asked, standing close enough to spit on. Duo had to fight the urge down just to do that. Dorothy hadn*t changed at all. Which, after two days, shouldn*t have surprised him. But the knowledge that she had condemned and innocent victim to be devoured had left no physical trace on her face. *Not only did that bitch condemn me but she dressed me in women*s clothing none the less!* Dorothy*s pale lavender eyes regarded him coldly. Surely he hadn*t changed either, and she would see though his silly disguise.
Giving a false smile Duo curtseyed, "Good evening."
"What is it?" Dorothy repeated, patience gone in the span of two words.
* I don*t* see what her rush is. Its not like she*s getting any or anything? Stupid wench.* thought the cross-dressing beauty to himself.
Dorothy didn*t know Duo after all. His plan, such as it was, was safe. So far. It wasn*t much to go on, but it was all he had. She found speaking easier if he didn*t look at him, and he lowered his gaze to the dusty street while making himself blush. "I come from Tierbo,"
he said, trying to match the regional accent to disguise his voice. "There*s a man there that has seemed to get himself possessed. He is peaking in voices, and is throwing fits like that of a young child. He has a gleam in his right eye that is not normal and his left eye is all clouded over and turned up in his head like. My father says, *Better get the priest,* he says, *before somebody gets hurt,* Will you come?" Duo said all this in a frighted girls voice.
"Tierbo," Dorothy repeated. It was a seaport, a good three days away.
"My father says to give this to you, for your church here." He reached into the bag of silver Heero had brought and grabbed a fistful of the coins. When he looked up from handing it over, he knew he had her. "There will be more of course," he said, "they were still collection when I left."
Dorothy nodded slowly before reaching down and taking Duo*s hand in her own before bringing it up to her lips to kiss it. Duo*s eyes widened and a full body cringe went through him. *Oh my God! Oh that*s just gross! Ew! Ew! Ew!*
"Tonight*s the vigil of St. Emmett, Griswold*s patron saint. Be here first thing tomorrow morning, and don*t you fret my dear. I*ll make sure to take care of that possessed man for you."
Still blushing Duo nodded before pulling his hand away from the Inquisitor*s own and now that Duo had started, he wasn*t willing to delay. He saw Dorothy start to move back inside and quickly wrapped his arms around her left one, "That*s what my father said."
"Please don*t keep him waiting. He*s in a terrible rush, the possessed man*s that violent. That*s why my father sent my brother over to Wendbury, to ask the priest there to come, too. See? He figured someone*s got to get there first." The implication he hoped she*d come away with was that only the first would get the extra money.
Dorothy considered. Then, as though doing him a favor,
"All right, all right," she said. "If the man*s that bad off, we*ll set out tonight. Meet me here directly after the vigil service." Duo was nodding, but she repeated, "Directly. I*ll have my things packed and a horse ready to go, and I want no nonsense from you."
"No nonsense," Duo agreed.
Dorothy looked doubtful, but she said nothing more. Giving Duo*s hand one last kiss she finally vanished inside the house.
Duo spent the rest of the afternoon scrubbing his hand before wondering about the town of Griswold, hoping to find Heero and meanwhile talking to the merchants about what work was available, for his *husband* of course, lest anyone became suspicious. Nobody had seen Heero since last night, but he did get Heero three job offers.
As evening set in, his mood shifter from annoyance to anger to worry.
Then, as he passed a dark, narrow alleyway, he heard someone say, "Psst."
Hoping that it had nothing to do with him, Duo ducked his head and walked faster.
"Psst! Young lady."
Duo glanced into the darkness only long enough to see that there were far too many shadows. But apparently that was long enough. He heard a quick, startled laugh. Then the voice*a young man*called, "Little boy disguised as a women."
It was no use pretending he didn*t hear or that it wasn*t true. From the corner of the alley with the darkest shadows he caught movement*a tanned hand beckoning. Duo looked around to make sure nobody on the street was watching and stepped into the alley.
Part of the shadows resolved themselves into the shape of a very beautiful tanned boy with platinum blond hair, bright lavender eyes, and lots of gold jewelry. "Well, well, my sweet one, " the boy said. But despite his gentle words, Duo flinched when he raised his hand to brush Duo*s cheek, "I would have to say you are almost as beautiful as I. Now, what would such a pretty boy such as yourself be doing dressed in nasty girls* clothes? Are you in trouble?" The tanned boy smiled gleefully. "You are." He tapped his own nose with a gold ringed covered finger. "I can smell people in trouble. You*ve gone and gotten yourself in bad company, haven*t you?"
"Who are you?" Duo asked as he backed away slightly.
The boy smiled and gave a small bow, "My name is Malik Ishtar. And here*s a little bit of advice for you deary. You better get out. Get out before you get in too deep." A shadow moved against Malik*s cheek and the boy sighed as if enjoying the caress of a lover.
"Yes," Duo said, easing towards the mouth of the alley, toward the open street. "Thank you for your advice."
"Advice is free," said the boy." Would you like my help?"
Duo shook his head and Malik laughed. Duo felt the edge of the corner building, realizing he was back on the street. Was the boy going to follow him? Prevent him from leaving? Yell out the truth about Duo to all the world? But the boy didn*t nothing, yelled nothing, only continued to laugh. "I*ll be here if you change your mind," he called after Duo "Here or in the glen behind the waterfall. I may well be your only chance*if you don*t wait too long."
When Duo left Malik grinned wickedly and laughed as out of the shadows stepped out a pale looking boy with long white hair and cold brown eyes. When the boy spoke his voice was husky and had a slight chill to it.
"What have you been doing Malik?"
Shadow*s enveloped Malik*s lower half as the pale man wrapped his arms around that section. "I don*t know what you mean my love. I was only trying to help that poor young beauty." The taller boy growled.
"I don*t think I like that. You are to help no one but me. Is that understood?"
Turning Malik leaned up to kiss the boy on the lips and wrap his arms around his neck.
"As you wish Bakura. Anything for you my shadow king."
Nothing else was said as the two disappeared into the darkness.
Duo ran the rest of the way back to the Green Barrel Inn, but he didn*t go there directly, just in case he was being followed. He ran past it and circled to the right, then the left, temporarily lost himself, and only then approached the inn. At the door he stopped and looked back.
*Silly,* he told himself for the nagging feeling that the wizard was watching him from the evening darkness. The boy named Malik did not seemed interested in chasing after him, and besides, Duo would have heard him. Still, it was a relief to enter the Green Barrel*s brightly lit common room, especially when he saw Heero. He was sitting at a table by the fire, where the flames cast their glow on the shaggy brown hair. For a moment Duo forgot how annoyed he was at him, until he noticed his impatient look, as though he*d spent all afternoon looking for him.
Which he didn*t believe for a moment.
He sat down next to Heero before speaking so that not everybody in the room would overhear their business. "Where have you been?" he demanded.
Heero smiled, as though to say Duo didn*t really want know.
Which Duo didn*t. "Don*t do that again. I was worried."
"About me?" His tone was insincere. Which made Duo blush and answer: "About the plan," though he didn*t like the thought Heero could be hurt or in trouble. Heero sat back on the bench and smiled. "What about the plan?" he asked.
He couldn*t answer, because the cook came out then, carrying bowls of smoked-mutton stew which she set before them on the table.
"None for me, thank you," Heero said, never look at her.
"You don*t eat enough," the cook scolded him, "that*s your problem."
At which point he did look at her.
Any appetite which Duo may have had dissolved in that look. "Let*s go to our room honey," Duo said, scrambling to get to his feet, to get away. "Come on, Hee-chan."
He got up slowly, with a smile for the cook which she no doubt took as charming.
*Damn it Heero, stop giving everyone those damn looks! My looks! Mine!*
In their room, Duo talked fast to get Heero*s mind away from the path he was sure it was taking. "I went to see Dorothy," he said, and saw a shadow of surprise. "I told her I was from Tierbo and that we needed her there for an exorcism. She agreed to come. I*m supposed to meet her after the vigil service tonight to take her there." Duo thought it best to leave out the kissing of his hand. He still felt nauseated whenever he thought about it.
"When is the vigil service?" Heero asked.
Duo suddenly wondered if he knew WHAT a vigil service was. Or and exorcism, for that matter. "Sundown. Which means it already started, so we*ll have to hurry. My plan, since you weren*t there to help, was to put the rest of the gold that you brought into her saddlebags, and then somehow get people to notice. I hoped that they*d think she*d been stealing from them, maybe." It sounded so lame, so ridiculous.
Instead of saying that, the dragon-youth pulled a large leather bag out from under his bed.
So that*s what he*d been doing, at least part of the day. It was more gold, much more. He*d also brought a pair of silver candlesticks, a delicately engraved silver goblet studded with emeralds, and a little golden plate*which, if it wasn*t a paten meant to hold the Eucharist during Mass, certainly could pass as one. He tried not to gawk like a peasant at court, but judging from Heero*s half-smile he hadn*t quite pulled it off. "I take it these are from your....ah..."
"Hoard."
"...hoard," he repeated, wondering why he felt guilty saying it if Heero didn*t. "Good." Good? Heero had stolen these things, how could he be saying "good" about that? "I can put part of this in her saddlebag and then make a little slit, so some of it spills out on the street while everybody*s watching her leave for Tierbo. I saw that her house has a small upper window. I couldn*t fit through, but if you could get in and hide the rest of this in Dorothy*s room, it*ll seem as though she*s been stealing for a long time."
Heero nodded, following Duo*s reasoning. "If you can toss the bag up into the room I can turn into a bird, fly in the window, change back to human, hide the things, resume bird shape..." He considered. "Of course, if I walk into the church without any clothes, somebody*s sure to notice. YOU always do."
Duo felt his cheeks get warm.
Heero smiled that dragon smile which always made Duo afraid he was missing something obvious. He said, "I*ll bring your clothes and hide them behind the church. Join me as soon as you can."
Heero nodded and Duo tried to think if they were forgetting anything. He was however not able to think when he was tackled to the bed and kissed breathless.
End Ch. Eight.
Author Note- ROFLAO. I can*t believe I made Dorothy a lesbo. I thought it might add a bit of humor to it. ^_^ Enjoy and review. Sorry about not having a lemon in there yet but don*t you worry I will be adding one!
