Three years later…
Fire...it’s life and death. It brings death and destruction to everything around it, but at the same time, it’s a sign of hope and new life. In Kakarot’s dreams, it was both. For the last few years, he’s had the same dream every night. It was filled with the bright hot element and Vegeta…He was always in it too. He was the one that brought the destruction and death. Everything around Him perished as He unleashed the powerful flames from His body. His eyes glowed white hot, His gaze dead and calm. Everyone was screaming and running, trying to save themselves. When everything became silent, only the crackling fire served as the music in the darkness, did Vegeta burst into flames Himself and fly off into the night. At least, that’s how the dream would end at times, other times, he would burn along with Him. However, no matter how frightening his fated to be was, for some reason, He gave him hope for the future. Almost as if destroying everything around Him was something that had to happen in order to renew everything and make it better. Either way, it always brought Kakarot out of it, screaming as he would sit up in his bed. This night was no different.
Just as he awoke, the soft thud of a door closing brought Kakarot’s attention towards the entrance. His fearful eyes pierced into Vegeta’s, who came forth to embrace him; knowing what was causing His fated one to be alarmed. “Was it the dream again?”
Kakarot embraced Vegeta tightly. His head rested against His stomach as Vegeta held onto his sweaty and shaky form. “Yes.” He whimpered.
Vegeta pulled back a little to sit on the other’s bed and held his face in one hand. “Do you want to tell me about it?”
Kakarot held the hand on his cheek desperately while he rocked back and forth slightly. “Fire. Why is there always so much fire? Is it the end? Is it something that will happen? Why do I dream of it every night? Why?!”
Vegeta hushed the younger. “Calm down, Kakarot. Panicking over something as silly as a dream is a waste of time and energy. Perhaps it is something that will happen, but who’s to say it is the end? Maybe the fire is representing something. Is it something that you fear?”
Kakarot tried concentrating on breathing for a moment before answering. “No, not really. Although being burned alive would be a frightening death, but it’s not something I fear above all else. Let alone every day.” He answered a little more calmly.
Vegeta gave him a puzzled look. “Then perhaps it is something else. You have the same dream every night. You’ve had all the time to remember the dream, even every detail if that. All the signs are there. You just have to know what they are telling you.” He leaned over and kissed him on the forehead then stood to change His clothing. “You’ll figure it out.”
Kakarot swung his legs over the side of the bed and watched as the other changed. “But what if I figure them out too late? What if…something bad is going to happen? How will I know when it will happen?”
Vegeta pulled a shirt over His head and ran a hand through His hair to fix it back into its flamed shape before turning to His fated one. “That’s not something you should worry about constantly, Kakarot. If something like that has to happen, then all you can do is prepare for it. There’s no turning off the path you’re already on. All you can do is make the trip as best as you can and keep moving forward.”
“Is that how You get by?” Kakarot asked hesitantly.
Vegeta nodded. “It’s how everyone gets by. If you’re poor, you either find a way to make more money or accept that you’re poor. However, most people don’t see it that way.” He made His way over to Kakarot’s bed and sat next to him.
“Perhaps You’re right.” Kakarot sighed.
Vegeta ran a hand through the younger’s untamed locks. “Are you hungry? When was the last time you’ve eaten? You look thinner.”
Kakarot closed his eyes at the treatment for a moment then opened them. “I can’t remember.”
Vegeta gave him a worried look before standing. “Come on. I’ll take you to the city and give you a proper meal.”
Kakarot smiled before standing as well. “Oh, really?! That would be great! It’s been a while since we’ve been to the city!” He exclaimed happily as he got dressed.
Vegeta smiled sadly. “Yes. I have been quite busy lately. I should treat you out more often.” He watched the younger get around.
Kakarot walked up to Him. “It’s okay. After all, it’s war. I’m surprised You have time for me at all.”
Vegeta stroked the other’s face sadly before guiding Kakarot out of the room and out into the moonlit night. He looked around them for a moment to see if anyone was near and went over to hold Kakarot tightly before taking off into the starry sky. Kakarot gasped when they took off. No matter how many times they did this, it always surprised him. Here he was, with a magnificent being that could do things that no human can do, and it always thrilled him; almost in a way where it made him feel special. How many humans can say they’ve been with someone like that? Not many. Vegeta still hasn’t told him what He was, nor has he figured it out. The man was a question…an enigma. His motives were clear, but His origins are still a mystery.
They were still at war, Kakarot was still in the tiny village Vegeta made him stay in, and Kakarot still felt alone. Even though they’ve been together for a few years now, Vegeta seemed distant; like He was keeping something from him…and He probably was. There were probably many things that the man was keeping from him and it’s up to Kakarot to get them out of Him. Kakarot held Vegeta tightly as he sighed into His chest. Every night whenever Vegeta would return, He’d be adorned with burns and cuts. It frightened Kakarot to his very core and even demanded that the man just walk away from this pointless fighting, but no matter what he said or did, Vegeta would assure him that everything was okay. Even though Kakarot knew that it wasn’t. His dreams told him that much. He didn’t know how much more he could take. He was sick of being left alone in a small town all by himself, never knowing if the man he cared for would return safely to him or not…until night fell. There were times where Vegeta wouldn’t even return. He’d be gone for a few days at a time, worrying Kakarot to death until He finally returned. After doing that a few times, Kakarot finally put his foot down and said that he would leave if He didn’t return every day. So, Vegeta started making a habit of doing so.
He doesn’t know what their relationship is. They both care about each other, but that’s about all it is so far. Vegeta’s been so busy and all, that they haven’t had any time to take the next step. How was he supposed to get to know this man if He was gone all the time? Even after all these years, Kakarot still doesn’t know what his answer will be. When they touched down in an empty alleyway, Vegeta wrapped an arm around Kakarot’s waist as they made their way towards Kakarot’s favorite restaurant. Kakarot smiled sadly at the gesture before leaning against Him.
Vegeta still didn’t trust him to walk on his own after what happened two years ago. They were in a city bigger than this one, just to spend the day together. It was one of the rare days that Vegeta took off just to be with him. Vegeta was arguing with another vendor to get something that Kakarot was interested in before he ventured off and got mugged. However, when the muggers soon found out he had nothing to give, they were thinking about selling him to make some quick doe. Fortunately, their plans were interrupted when Vegeta stepped in. At least, that’s what Kakarot thinks. All he remembered was Vegeta calling for him and he looked His way when he felt something wet splash onto him and the muggers’ bodies hit the ground. He didn’t hesitate to run towards Vegeta, who lecture him about leaving His side and cleaned the blood off of him. How blood got on him was still a mystery to Kakarot. He still has no idea what happened that day. He tried asking Vegeta, but he didn’t get much out of Him.
He was jolted out of his thoughts when they entered the restaurant/pub. Kakarot liked this place because it was always so lively and the food was mouthwatering. Usually he’d get seconds of everything and Vegeta would gladly pay for it. Vegeta probably brought him here because he hasn’t eaten anything in the last couple days. All he can think about is Vegeta and their future. However, he still has no clue in what will become of them. They took their own seats in the back where it was a little less crowded as a waiter came over. Kakarot ordered everything while Vegeta ordered a couple beers. When the waiter left, Kakarot looked at Vegeta in surprise. “You’re actually going to drink something?”
Vegeta chuckled. “Yes, Kakarot. And so are you.”
Kakarot was stumped for a minute. “What?”
Vegeta sighed as He rested His head on His hand. “You’re a man now, Kakarot. I think it’s time I start letting you be one.”
Kakarot still had the puzzled look on his young face. “But Vegeta, I’ve been a man for a couple years now.”
“I know. That’s why I said I should start letting you be one. I’ve been protecting you from everything for a while now and I figured I should…back off a little and let you start experiencing things that a man does.” Vegeta said a little regrettably towards the end. The boy was growing up so fast and He was spending all of His time fighting and being away from His fated one. Here he is…already a man and here He is still treating him like a child. Where did the time go?
Kakarot’s features turned to understanding. “Ohhh. Like what things?” The waiter arrived with the drinks and some of the food that Kakarot ordered and left.
Vegeta gestured towards the drinks. “Like alcohol for example. You can drink that now. Then there’s gambling and perhaps going to a brothel and bedding a woman if you wish.” His tone became guarded when He said that, but kept calm.
Kakarot dug into the food with gusto while Vegeta spoke then choked at the last thing Vegeta said. He pounded his chest to dislodge the food that got stuck before taking a drink of his beer and making a face at the taste. “A woman?! Gee, Vegeta. I don’t know…” He took a break from eating at the thought. “I haven’t really thought about that.”
Vegeta raised an eyebrow. “Really? Then what have you thought about?”
Kakarot blushed lightly. “You and…me…and what will become of us.” He answered quietly.
This intrigued Vegeta as He sat up straight. “Oh? Well, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, I can understand if you don’t want to stay with me. After all, I haven’t been there for you that much and I don’t know if you want a family or not.”
Kakarot looked at Him in surprise. “I…don’t know if I want one either.” He stared at the mug of beer in thought. “It would be nice though, but…I don’t know if…” He trailed off, not sure how to finish his thoughts.
“Don’t know if what?” Vegeta asked suspiciously.
Kakarot looked at Him with soft eyes and a blush. “If I…want to leave You.”
Vegeta stared at him in surprise for a moment before recuperating. “Yes, well these are things that you need to take more into consideration. Life is short you know.” He took the other mug that was set in front of Him and drank half of it down.
Kakarot smiled slightly, knowing what the other meant as he watched Him drink the beverage in surprise. “Vegeta, You’re drinking too?”
Vegeta set the mug down non-too-gently and let out a breath. “Of course. One should never drink alone. Besides, it’s been a while since I’ve had one of these.” He stared at the mug before draining the rest of it.
The waiter returned with more food as Vegeta shoved the empty mug at him for a refill. The waiter took it and left. Kakarot stared at all the food and suddenly got his appetite back and continued eating. Vegeta watched him for a while until Kakarot took another gulp from the alcoholic beverage and made another face. “Ugh! This stuff tastes terrible! How can You drink it?”
Vegeta shrugged. “Such a simple liquid of man does not affect me. You don’t have to drink it if you don’t want to. I can order you something else if you prefer.”
Kakarot shook his head. “No. It’s my first time drinking it, so I’ll take it for now. Besides, I should start building a tolerance for it too and maybe You’ll drink with me more often.” He gulped down more of the bitter liquid as Vegeta hid a smile.
After a couple hours of eating and drinking, Vegeta thought it was about time they went back…and that Kakarot had had enough. “Alright, Kakarot. Stop drinking or else you’re going to throw up everything you just ate.”
Kakarot laid an arm around Vegeta’s shoulders, who guided him out of the place and into the somewhat desolate street. “Oh, V-Vegeta! I’m fine! Really! Never been…been better.” Kakarot slurred as he stumbled alongside the man next to him.
Vegeta chuckled. “You sound fine.” He hung on to the younger’s waist tighter as they walked.
“I am!” Kakarot continued yelling. “And…how come…y-you’re not…drunk. Like me.” He gestured at himself in astonishment.
“I told you, Kakarot. It doesn’t affect me.” Vegeta watched their feet as He tried to keep the other balanced.
“Yeah, well…You also didn’t drink as much as me.” Kakarot hiccupped.
Vegeta rolled His eyes. “Kakarot, you only had one and a half. I had five.”
Kakarot stared at Him for a moment. “Bragger.”
Vegeta chuckled. “I’m hardly bragging.” Kakarot’s clumsy feet almost sent them to the ground until Vegeta pressed him to a wall to get him to stay still. “Alright, no more walking for you until you’ve sobered up.” He held Kakarot’s sides to hold him steady as Kakarot laughed and threw his arms around the other’s neck and pulled Him close. He nuzzled into the hard chest in front of him in a sleepy way. Vegeta froze at the contact, but continued to hold the other.
“I…miss You, Vegeta.” Kakarot slurred out. “You’re…hardly around anymore…and…I miss seeing You. I…I can’t take…You being gone so much. I don’t know…if You’re going to come back to me alive or not.” He held the older tighter at his words.
Vegeta did the same. “I miss you too Kakarot and I’ll always come back to you alive. I promise. I’ll never leave you, unless you want me too.”
Kakarot shook his head into that chest. “No. Don’t ever leave me. I don’t know…what I’ll do if You did.” He looked up at Vegeta with a drunkenly sad gaze that caused Vegeta’s guarded heart to crack.
He stroked the younger’s hair and touched His forehead to his. “Then I’ll stay.”
Kakarot’s eyes filled with tears before he leaned forward and touched his lips to Vegeta’s. Neither moved for a moment, partly because Kakarot didn’t know what to do and Vegeta was shocked at the action. However, Vegeta recovered and began moving His lips against Kakarot’s. Kakarot moaned at the action as he went with it and tried moving in sync with Vegeta, but was having a little trouble since he was drunk. After a moment, Kakarot pulled back for air as Vegeta waited for the other’s reaction. Kakarot stroked Vegeta’s face as he stared at Him with a lust-filled expression. “I’ve been wanting to do that…for a long time.”
Vegeta smiled. “You could have done it any time you wanted.”
Kakarot leaned against Him. “You…weren’t around.” He mumbled before passing out.
Vegeta caught him before he hit the ground then picked him up and held him for a moment before taking off into the air.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next night, Vegeta returned to a different sight…Kakarot was sleeping. He smiled softly at the light snores the younger was emitting as He changed out of His dirty and torn clothes. It actually made Him happy to see that the other hasn’t woken up from his reoccurring nightmare. However, He knew that He would never hear the end of it if He let him sleep. For some reason, Kakarot wanted to see Him whenever he could. After all, he is the kind of person that needed to be around others. Vegeta walked over to the sleeping form and leaned over him. He took in the sight as He watched him sleep and stroked the young calm face. “Kakarot, I’m back.” All He got in response was a groan as Kakarot turned away and pulled the covers over him. Vegeta stood up, not sure how to react to the other ignoring Him. He went to the other side of the bed and felt the other’s forehead. “Kakarot, are you feeling okay?”
Kakarot groaned again as he pulled the covers over his head. “Ugh, don’t yell!”
Vegeta pulled back in surprise before He finally figured out what was going on. He smirked. “Have a hangover, huh?”
Kakarot tried nudging the other through the covers, but failed. “It’s not funny.”
Vegeta chuckled. “I find it to be.” He leaned over the other as He moved the blanket out of the way so He could kiss the other’s forehead. “Can I get you anything?” He asked gently.
Kakarot tiredly blinked his eyes, but failed to keep them open. “Get rid of the pain?” He suggested then sighed. “And I have to pee.”
Vegeta stared at the other in thought. “Well, I don’t know about the pain, but I suppose I can help you go to the bathroom if you’d like.” He smirked again.
Kakarot hid a smile as he got up. “I can do it…jerk.” He mumbled the last part on his way to the bathroom.
While Kakarot did that, a thought came to Vegeta. He went to His things and pulled out a plant along with a mortar and a pestle. He took the buds from the plant and into the mortar then grinded them with the pestle. When Kakarot came back out, he smelled something nice and really strong. He looked to Vegeta and noticed what He was doing. “What is that?” He went over to sit beside Him on the bed.
“Lavender. It’s supposed to help with headaches.” When the plant was grinded, He dipped a couple fingers in it and turned to Kakarot. “Where does it hurt most?”
Kakarot stared at the substance. “Mainly the temples and the back of my neck and head.”
Vegeta scooted a little closer and applied the substance in the places specified. When that was done, He put the mortar and pestle aside before standing. “Now, think of positive and stress-free things.” He then headed to the restroom to rinse off His hands in the bowl of water provided by the inn.
Kakarot sneezed at the strong smell and tried to do what the other instructed. “Ugh, this stuff might make it worse than better.”
“Just do it.” Vegeta ordered as He returned to the room.
Kakarot sighed then obeyed by closing his eyes. He thought about the days he spent with Vegeta and the ones that made him smile. With a light moan, he laid back on the bed with his arms wide open. Vegeta watched the display in amusement as He crossed His arms and leaned against the doorway to the bathroom. “Is it working?”
“Mm, I suppose.” Kakarot mumbled as he sat up then went to stand, but wobbled on his feet, a bit dizzy from the effects of the lavender. Vegeta quickly came over to catch him before he hit the floor as Kakarot wrapped his arms around the other’s neck. “Whoops!” Kakarot chuckled lightly as he clung to Vegeta, who gave him a look of concern.
“Are you alright?” Vegeta asked as He brushed the younger’s hair out of his eyes.
Kakarot was about to answer when he suddenly got a feeling of déjà vu. Then, the previous night came back to him as he stared at Vegeta with a bit of embarrassment and worry. “Oh n-“ He started to say as he closed his eyes for a moment then opened them. “Did we…? I mean…well…did I…do anything that was…awkward or…stupid or…wrong…?” He wondered as he stared past the other, seeing his memories from the previous night.
Vegeta looked confused for a moment. “That all depends on what you think is wrong.”
Kakarot looked Him in the eyes. “You know what I mean.”
Vegeta pulled away slightly, disappointment replacing His confused features. “No, I don’t.”
Kakarot looked lost for a moment at the other’s reaction. “Did we…kiss?”
Vegeta stared hard at him. “You said you wanted to do it for a long time.”
Kakarot blushed lightly. “I did?”
Vegeta began to pull away more, but Kakarot’s heart wasn’t having any of that. He kept clinging to Him, keeping Him from going anywhere. His mind told him that it wasn’t right, but his heart was telling him not to let Him go. “Vegeta…” He said with uncertainty along with what sounded like begging.
However, it did the opposite of what Kakarot wanted. Vegeta pulled away altogether and quickly left the room. Kakarot stared in shock as he watched Him leave. “Vegeta…” He said again, but louder and followed his call out into the hallway. “Vegeta!” He watched the other’s back as He continued down the hall, ignoring his call. Kakarot ran after Him. “Vegeta, wait!” He ran until he caught up with Him and stood in His path. “Please, Vegeta-“
Vegeta tried to get around him. “Just say it Kakarot! You regret it! You don’t feel the same way!”
“No! I-“ Kakarot stopped once he fully comprehended what his fated-to-be said. “…feel the same way? How do You feel about me?”
Just like that. Vegeta went from angry and hurt to lost. “I…” He didn’t know if He should admit it. It could possibly make things worse. “Well, Kakarot…you should know by now how I feel about you.” He sighed in defeat. “I love you. I’ve loved you since the first time I saw you…since you were nothing but a little baby crying in his crib.” He looked into the other’s eyes as He stroked his face lovingly. “I don’t know what it was. It could’ve been how innocent you were and how you are now. It could’ve been the way you stopped crying once I touched your face…or perhaps it could’ve been how alone you were, with nothing but your grandfather to raise you. You were raised and given nothing…and yet I fell for you anyway. I was determined…I was determined not to get too close to you because I knew that…’oh, it’s just another one to break my heart again’ and just like that…you ruined me. You broke through me…and you weren’t even trying. You didn’t even look at me…not even say anything or crying…you just…accepted me.” His eyes began to water, but He knew better than to let His tears fall. Instead, He laughed lightly as He continued to stroke His fated one’s face. “You snuggled into my hand like it was a blanket. Though, you probably thought it was…still…it didn’t stop me from falling. It made me fall even farther…deeper…even as you grew older. You’re buried into me now and there’s nothing I can do about it. The only way I see it now is if you drop me and I’ll fall onto the hard ground…again and accept that I just can’t be loved in return.”
Tears were streaming down Kakarot’s face and he wasn’t even aware of it. All he could see and hear was Vegeta and it was warming and breaking his heart at the same time. When Vegeta finished, He moved around Kakarot and left the building. Kakarot couldn’t do anything. He just stood there…not knowing how to react to such an admission. No one’s ever said anything like that to him. He knew deep down that he had similar feelings for Vegeta, but at the same time, it was all foreign to him. He didn’t know if it was love. It could’ve been love for like a brother or that he cared for Him as a friend…but as he ran all those possibilities through his head, he knew they were wrong. With uncertain doubt, he ran out of the building and into the empty street. He looked around for his fated-to-be, but saw no one. “Vegeta!” He cried out as he continued to search, even going down streets searching frantically for the man, but there was no sign of Him. He waited too long. His reaction wasn’t quick enough. Vegeta probably took off, thinking that His feelings weren’t returned. Will He come back? No, He has to come back. He didn’t even give him a chance to respond. Kakarot fell to his knees in the middle of a road as his tears fell to the dry dirt below. How could he do that? Why would he do that? The man has been rejected who knows how many times and here he just did it again. He didn’t want to…he didn’t mean to…he needed Him to return so that he may have a say in how he feels.
After a while, Kakarot stood as he wiped the tears from his face. “He’ll return…He just…needs some time alone. Yeah…that’s it.” He said to himself as he took his time heading back to his room. Once there, he looked at Vegeta’s belongings that still lay on the other side of the room. He went over and looked through some of them, noticing half of them were torn and burned. He picked up a shirt that he liked, knowing it looked good on the man that protected him and practically raised him, and sniffed it…taking in the scent and carving it into his memory. The tears flowed again as he hugged the garment to himself and sunk to the floor against the wall with His things. His mind went over the other’s words over and over…making the tears nonstop…causing him to fall into a restless sleep.
