She's up to something. Not that that's anything knew. It seems she's always up to something and that keeps me on my toes. Because, in the end, I'm either very pleasantly surprised or completely humiliated. The best ending of one of her schemes was a week in Cancun. The worst was walking into work to find posters plastered all over the walls of me asleep with pink ribbons in my hair. I don't sleep so soundly anymore. Now I can usually tell if she's planning some prank or if it's something good, but I'm having trouble with that at the moment.
It's a refreshing diversion, though. Ever since I found out about Heero, it's been difficult to think about much else. I still have times when I feel guilty about what happened during the war. He assured me he understood, but I know I hurt him and he's been reluctant to date since then. He actually dated a woman for a while and when I asked, he said he was bi. Bullshit. The man may be able to perform the duty with a woman, but he loves to be taken. Trust me, I know.
When Quatre confided to me his love for Heero, I was glad to hear it. Quatre was just what Heero needed... Well, in temperament and character. I'm not so sure I can picture him topping anyone, but they could work that out. But no matter how much I encouraged, Quatre wouldn't make a move. I suppose I could've just come out and said I knew for a fact Heero was gay, but then I would've had to explain how I knew and I wasn't exactly prepared to do that.
To make it clear, I do not look back on that time and feel disgusted or anything. I'm just embarrassed and mad at myself for leading Heero on. I didn't do it intentionally, but it happened nonetheless. And I felt horrible about it. I respect him, and love him like a brother. And if he dies, a piece of all of us will go with him. I have no doubt about that.

Trowa leaned over and snatched the phone up as it rang. “Barton.”
“Hey, it's Quatre.”
Trowa froze. “Is Heero okay?”
The blond was silent for a moment. “The chemo is catching up to him,” Quatre said quietly.
“But it's only been a week.”
“The doctor said it would be aggressive.” He cleared his throat. “Heero wants to have everyone over tonight. Think you and Ronnie could make it?”
“Sure. We don't have any plans that I know of.”
Quatre chuckled. “Trowa, when are you going to make an honest woman out of her?”
His face flushed slightly. They'd been dating for three years, and living together for two and a half of those years. Neither had broached the subject of marriage and, truth be told, Trowa hadn't even thought about it. He began to wonder if Ronnie had. Most girls would have been demanding it, but Veronica Lane wasn't like most girls.
“We haven't discussed it.”
Quatre grunted. “Maybe you should.”
Trowa's phone beeped. “I've got another call, I'll see you tonight.”
“Okay.”
He switched over. “Barton.”
“Come to my office,” Une's clipped voice commanded.
“On my way.”

Ronnie glared at Trowa from the doorway. “You should have told her no.”
He sighed. “I couldn't. I'll only be gone for two weeks.”
She stamped her foot. “Damn it, Trowa, now is not the time for you to go off on some stupid mission.”
He turned from the suitcase he was packing on the bed. “Ronnie, I had no legitimate reason to turn it down.”
“You promised Quatre we'd go over there tonight.”
His brows drew together. “I'm pretty sure Une wouldn't accept 'I have a party to go to' as an excuse to get out of an assignment.” He was shocked as tears welled up in her eyes. In all the years he'd known her, he'd never seen her cry. He crossed to her and pulled her into his arms. “What's wrong?”
She buried her face in his chest. “I don't want you to go.”
He pulled back slightly, tipping up her chin, but she kept her eyes closed. “I'll be back in two weeks. We've been separated by missions before.
What's different this time?”
“Heero's sick.”
Emerald eyes narrowed. “And?”
She bit her lip, slowly raising her dark eyes. “I'm pregnant.”
His jaw dropped and for a full two minutes, he couldn't seem to form words. “You... you're... we're...” He swallowed. “Oh shit.” The moment it passed his lips, he knew he'd just screwed up royally.
Dark eyes flashed and she jerked from his arms. “What do you mean 'oh, shit'? Does the thought of having a child with me disgust you or something?”
“Of course not! I just... I thought you were on birth control. We haven't even talked about marriage much less kids.”
“My birth control ran out and I forgot to pick it up for a few days. But we always used condoms so I didn't think too much about it.” She ground her teeth. “And why is it exactly we haven't talked about marriage? Do you not want to commit?”
He floundered. She hadn't mentioned it either. Why was it all his fault? “I'm living with you, aren't I?”
She sucked in a breath and closed her eyes. “I'm sorry, it's hormones. Just ignore everything I say for the next nine months.”
He shook his head. “What?”
She moved to sit on the edge of their bed. “Sally said that pregnancy causes hormones to go out of whack and that I shouldn't be surprised if I cry at commercials or feel like killing you from time to time.” She laughed softly. “But I already did that last one.”
He nodded slowly, feeling like he'd just stepped off the edge of a canyon as reality settled hard on his shoulders. He was going to be a father. He licked his lips. “I guess we really need to talk about marriage.”
She flopped back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. “Trowa, I promised myself something when my parents divorced: that I would never get married just because I was pregnant. I've seen how well that can work out.”
He shifted his suitcase to sit beside her, resting one hand on the bed and placing the other to her cheek. “Ronnie, if this had happened a long time ago, I wouldn't immediately jump to the idea of marriage. But, we're compatible. We love each other. I guess I was just content with how things were so it didn't cross my mind to get married.”
She gazed up at him. “Do you want to?”
“I just want to be with you and I want what's best for the child. If you want to get married, that's fine with me.”
She thought for a moment. “Let me think about it.” She glanced to the clock. “You better get going.”
Now he felt truly torn and wished he could call Une up and have her send someone else. But it was too late for that. He leaned down and kissed her. “I'll try to get done early.”
She nodded. “Love you.”
“Love you, too. Go to Quatre's and try to have fun.”
She pulled him back to her and kissed him passionately enough to make him forget his name for a moment and then shoved him away, smirking at his dazed expression. “Don't forget about me while you're gone.”
“That would be impossible.”
She sat up and then gasped. “Oh damn.”
“What?”
“I had this great plan concocted to get Duo to see what a big ass he was and I needed you here to pull it off.”
He folded his arms over his chest. “What exactly were you going to do?”
“Well, the start of their problems was the fact that Duo is kinda possessive and jealous. He thought some guy was after Wufei, well, they guy was, but anyway, he actually went as far as trying to forbid Wufei from talking to the guy.”
Trowa's eyebrows raised. “Are you serious?”
She nodded, helping Trowa finish packing. “As a heart attack. And you can image how well that went over with Wufei. Things went downhill from there.”
He studied her a moment. “How exactly were you going to use me in your plot?”
She blushed faintly. “I sort of have him convinced I don't like Linda because she has the hots for you. I figured if he watched the same scenario from the outside, he'd see where he screwed up.”
He groaned. “Ronnie.”
“Hey, it was a good plan!”
He folded his suitcase closed and zipped it up. “Well, you'll have to think of something else now.” The mission, he decided, had come at the perfect moment. “I'll give you a call when I can.” He kissed her again. “Love you.”
“You, too.” She watched him leave and huffed. “Damn it. It really was a good plan,” she muttered to the wall.

Heero stood in front of the fridge, staring into it like he would the barrel of a gun. He wasn't hungry and nothing looked good, but he couldn't allow himself to continue losing massive weight. And losing ten pounds in the first week was just plain ridiculous. The supper Marty was cooking smelled about as appealing as raw sewage, which made Heero mad. The man was making his favorite dish! He should have been salivating, not fighting to keep his rolling stomach under control.
“Can you not find it?” the cook's voice drifted from the stove.
Heero shook off his frustration, grabbed the milk and set it on the counter next to Marty before moving to sit at the table. Quatre had run out to pick up something for the night, he hadn't exactly been clear on that point and wouldn't let anyone else go for him. The others, minus Trowa, were due to arrive soon, and Heero wanted nothing more than to go back to bed. He was glad for the fact he had the next few days free from the chemo.
“Why don't you go lie down in the living room?”
He looked to Marty. “I'm tired of lying down.”
The cook nodded. “I can understand that, but Quatre will skin me alive if he finds out I let you help in the kitchen.”
“Just tell him I bullied you.”
He snorted. “You did.”
Heero smirked. He really liked Marty. “Then it's my fault, not yours, and I know how to make him happy again. So don't worry about it.”
The doorbell rang and Heero pushed from the table to answer it. “Heero! Should you be up?”
He let Ronnie in. “I'm not an invalid.”
Her face flushed. “I didn't mean that, but... well, you just need to rest.”
“I rested all week. Well, most of it.” A smirk raised to her lips and his eyes narrowed. “What?”
She belatedly remembered she wasn't supposed to know about Heero and Quatre's new development and wiped the smirk from her face. “Nothing. Oh, what smells so good in the kitchen?” She bounced to the previously mentioned room and Heero followed at a more sedate pace.
Just watching her flit around the room- snatching the errant piece of carrot from the salad and a chunk of chicken from the plate it sat on, waiting to be added to the fettuccine and alfredo sauce- made Heero tired. He sat at the table.
“Where's Quatre?”
“He ran to the store.”

Duo hated the mixture of longing and anger that hit him as he and Wufei pulled into the drive at the same time. Wufei got out of his car and Duo resented the hurt look on the Chinese man's face.
“Damn, they'll invite anyone here.”
Wufei flinched. “This is for Heero. Can you at least try to be civil for one night?”
Duo ground his teeth, not appreciating the reprimand from the man who'd betrayed him. He didn't bother to answer as he moved up to the house.
This was going to be a long night.
