Trowa returned, along with Quatre and Une, as Wufei was being wheeled out. Heero nodded to them as he passed with Wufei, the Chinese man gripping his hand tightly. Trowa set one laptop on the chair Heero had basically claimed since Wufei's admittance. He handed the other laptop and a bottle of hand sanitizer to Duo.
“It's been sterilized, but Sally wants you to use that, too.”
Duo nodded, not bothering to answer as he booted the computer up. Une sat next to the bed, raising an eyebrow at Davis' perch next to the braided man. He shrugged a shoulder as if that was an answer to her unspoken question and she sighed.
“What do you want to know? Trowa should have filled you in on everything.”
“Why are your implants failing?” she asked in a soft tone, a small sign showing how shaken she was at seeing the usually vibrant man in a hospital bed.
He began several searches, eyes scanning the screen. “I'm not sure. I guess he cut them off somehow. I didn't know he could do that.” He glanced up to her briefly. “Am I in trouble?”
She shook her head. “Simply getting the implants isn't illegal, just ill-advised due to the risk of it.” She tilted her head to the side. “When did they start failing?”
“A few days ago, just before he called, my fingers started tingling.”
“Why did he bother to call you?” she wondered. “I mean, his mission was complete, right?”
“To gloat. What's the fun in a victory if you don't rub it in the loser's face?”
“He could have done that over your cell, though,” Trowa pointed out. “Why actually set up a meeting and then not show up?”
Quatre replied to that, brows drawing together. “To send us on a wild good chase, an added bit of sport to rub in the fact that he's capable of taking out two Preventers.”
Duo's head snapped up and he and Quatre stared at each other, both coming to the same conclusion. “He's in the city,” Duo said. “How much you wanna bet he's right under our noses laughing it up?”
Une and Trowa were already moving. “Any idea where he could be?”
“He likes classy clubs, but goes to seedy bars because they tend to not have functioning security cameras.”
She nodded. “Email me a description of him,” she ordered as she disappeared out the door. She ducked back in. “Davis, why are you just sitting there?”
He looked to Duo and the braided man nodded. “Go with her.”
“But-”
“I'll be fine. Bring him back for me, 'kay?”
Blake sighed, leaned over and kissed his forehead. “Don't overdo it.”
He raised an eyebrow. “You know me.”
He snorted. “Exactly.”
“Now, Davis!”
After he'd left the room, Quatre sat in the chair Une had vacated. “Well, you certainly know how to clear a room.” Duo graced him with a soft laugh. “How long have you and Davis been together?”
“Hm... 'bout five months.”
“Why didn't you tell us?” Quatre asked conversationally, but his eyes were glued to Duo's fingers stumbling over the keys. “Do you want some help?”
With a grunt, he handed the laptop over. “Type for me.”
Quatre nodded and settled back in the chair, typing as quickly as he could while Duo threw out a detailed description of the man and any other information that might have been pertinent. After the email was sent Quatre tilted his head to the side.
“Was there anything else you needed to do on this?”
“Tons of stuff,” he said softly, “but I don't really feel like it right now.”
Quatre set the laptop aside. “How can you be so calm?”
Duo raised an eyebrow. “I'm sure the guys will find Knight and I trust Sally to see the implant now that-”
“That's not what I meant.”
Duo's head tilted back a little and Quatre imagined his mouth falling to an 'O' behind the mask. “You mean, even though I'm dying.” He looked down. “I'll be honest, when I went home that night after Marcus called and my hands were tingling, I was pretty terrified. I was mad. And I punched a hole in my wall.” He shrugged and looked back up.
“But, whatever happens, I had seven years added to my life, Quatre. Seven years I wasn't supposed to have, and I loved every minute of them. They have been by far the best of my life. I want seventy more, but if I don't get them, I can't really complain.”
Quatre grunted. “If you don't get seventy more I'll definitely complain. So, why didn't you tell us about Davis?”
“There really hadn't been much time. I was in the middle of an assignment when we got together, and almost as soon as I got back, we were making plans to go to the amazon.”
“But we still got together on the weekends once a month. Why didn't you tell us then?”
“I guess, I was just afraid if I mentioned it, it was doomed to fall apart and I was havin' too good a time to let it go.”
Quatre put a hand on his arm. “Duo, that's superstitious nonsense.”
He chuckled. “So?”
“Wilson, Greene and Tailor, come to the OR.” Sally's voice drifted over the PA system and Quatre and Duo exchanged looks. Duo tossed his feet over the side of the bed and held out his hand for the blond.
“Help me.”
He took a breath. “Duo, you shouldn't... Why don't you wait here and I'll go see what's going on?”
Duo rolled his eyes and stood slowly. “How about I tell you what's going on.”
Quatre knew there was no point in arguing so he pulled Duo's arm over his shoulder and they made their way down the hall. Heero was standing outside the operating room in a heated discussion with Sally.
“You can't do this!” he practically yelled.
“What other option is there? He told me to, Heero.”
“He's delusional with pain.”
She nodded. “And it will only get worse and end with him dead if I don't do it.”
“Do what?”
Both looked to Duo and then laid flat stares to Quatre. He raised his chin. “Oh, like you could have stopped him. What's going on?”
Heero huffed. “She wants to operate on Wufei while he's awake.”
She ground her teeth. “The anesthesia isn't working. He gets a little drowsy and then wakes up. No medications are having any effect on him. I should've realized this might have been a possibility because the morphine didn't work, either.”
Duo's brows drew together. “What's causing it?”
“It has to be the implant.”
Quatre paled, but he shook his head. “Heero, Sally's right. I know it'll be painful for him. But he will die if she doesn't get the implant out. Pain now is a small price to pay to save him, don't you think?”
Heero leaned back to the wall and rubbed his forehead. “Fine, but I get to be in there.”
Sally wanted to argue, but if that was what it took then she would do it. “All right, but you do as you're told. Go scrub up.” She looked to Quatre and Duo. “Go back to your room.”
“No, we're going to the observation room.”
She threw her hands in the air. “Whatever, just get off your feet.”
******
Wufei tried to calm his breathing as he was surrounded by seven doctors and nurses. He'd told Sally to do it, knew there was no other option, but that didn't mean he had to look forward to it. He looked up into cobalt eyes as Heero put his hands on his shoulders. Leather straps ran over his chest, hips, thighs, and ankles, but they wouldn't keep him from moving side to side, so Sally had brought in others and soon there were far too many hands on him, holding him in place.
“Heero,” he breathed.
“You're all right. You're going to be all right.” It was a declaration that could in no way be promised. So much could go wrong. Sally said, due to the strain already on his body, there was a 50-50 chance his heart would give out halfway through. There was the chance she might not find the implant. The chance that it had done more damage than what could be reversed. But the fact remained, it was his only chance.
Sally held out a soft strip of leather, wrapped in plastic. “Put this between his teeth.”
Heero nodded and took it. “Wait,” Wufei exclaimed. He chewed his lip. “Before that...” his chest heaved with fearful breaths. “Kiss me.”
Heero smiled softly, lifted his mask, and leaned down, pressing his lips gently to the Chinese man's, not even caring they were in a room full of people. It was their first kiss, and if anything went wrong, it would be their last. Heero wouldn't deny himself or Wufei of that. He raised up, put the leather between his teeth and put his hands back to Wufei's shoulders.
Sally put the scalpel to the incision she had closed up only days ago. “I'm sorry, Wufei.”
He mumbled something around the leather. “I think that means: just do it, woman.” Heero said, not really feeling the amusement the words implied, but needing something to break the stress, even if it was only for a moment.
Wufei looked up into and held Heero's eyes as she made the first cut. His fists clenched and a muffled noise escaped him. As she started peeling back skin a heavy stream of choked sobs came from behind the leather that his teeth were grinding into. Tears leaked from the corners of his eyes into his hair.
Duo pressed his hand to the glass as the gruesome operation continued. How Wufei hadn't passed out was beyond him, and he prayed that soon that would change. Wufei's fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles were almost white, which was no easy feat with his coloring. Onyx eyes squeezed tightly shut and somehow a scream made it passed the gag before blessed darkness pulled him under.
Duo heaved a sigh of relief and Quatre slumped in his chair. “Thank goodness.”
Duo nodded his agreement, eyes moving to the heart monitor that had slowed some from the panicked pace it had stayed at for the last ten minutes. So far, everything was going well. Duo worried his lips with his teeth, wishing Blake was around to hold him and tell him everything was going to be all right.
“Got it!” Sally exclaimed excitedly... at the same moment the heart monitor slowed to dangerous levels that had it beeping in warning. She looked to it briefly. “Hold on, Wufei, give me time.”
Duo held his breath as she fought to safely dislodge the device that had been sapping his friend's life. He pressed his forehead to the glass. “Come on, Fei. Stay with us.”
“Get the paddles,” Sally ordered.
Duo jumped and pressed the intercom button between the rooms. “Sally, you can't send electricity into him.”
“Why the hell not?”
“I've seen first-hand how the implants react if hit with a voltage higher than ten watts. They blow, Sally. It would tear half his stomach to shreds.”
She stared through the glass, really wishing that she could find the man who did this and implant ten in his head and send some high voltage through him. “Sit back down, Duo. I hate to do this,” Sally said, looking to Heero. “Try to wake him up.”
“Are you crazy?”
“It'll boost the heart rate, hopefully. No medications will work. I need another minute. I can see it, but I'm having trouble getting it out without causing serious internal bleeding.”
Heero leaned down, pressing his cheek to Wufei's temple and whispering. Slowly, black brows drew together and a steady stream of whimpers filled the room, along with a stronger heartbeat. He jerked, or tried to at least, and opened his eyes. He gazed up at Heero was such an imploring expression that Heero's throat tightened and his chest began to hurt.
“I'm sorry. We were losing you. Just another minute and it's over. Then you get to help us castrate Knight... Oh, well, you already did that. We can cut off some other body parts, if you want to.” He knew he was babbling, but Wufei's attention stayed on him, giving him something to try to focus on outside of the pain.
Duo raised an eyebrow at the 'castrate' remark and glanced to Quatre. “Fei castrated the guy? Seriously?”
The blond raised a shoulder. “Not that I'm aware of, but no one knows what happened outside of Sally and Une.” He looked back to the surgery. “And I guess Heero. Maybe he did.”
It didn't take much for Duo to figure some things out and his mood darkened. There was only one reason he could think of for Wufei to do something so drastic and he vowed his own brand of justice on the man who'd attempted to kill them.
“It's out,” Sally said wearily, turning to drop the bloody implant on a try before she started sewing Wufei back up. When she finally stepped back and cleaned off the blood, Heero took the gag from between Wufei's lips and the hands on him left. He shook as soon as there was no one to hold him still.
Heero ran his fingers through Wufei's hair. “You did good.”
Onyx eyes fluttered slightly and he was pulled under. Sally sighed. “Well, I guess he deserves to pass out after that.” She lifted the implant. “I've got some studying to do.” She looked to Duo through the glass. “Get back to your room. Wufei will be back there shortly.”
“Sally.” She looked to Greene. “He didn't just pass out, he's under the anesthesia. You were right; the implant was stopping the meds.”
Her brows drew together. “But the anesthesia worked during the first surgery.”
“Maybe it was because it had just been implanted,” he mused. “The pain didn't hit him for several days.”
She nodded. “I'll know more once I study it.” She stared down at the small, thin device. “And hopefully it can tell me something about how to help Duo.”
