Trowa stared at his reflection with pursed lips. His eye hadn’t completely swelled up, but it was an ugly shade of dark purple. His cheek was just as bad. This was going to be an interesting dinner party.
“What’s wrong, babe?”
He looked to Duo through his reflection. “Heero is going to have a conniption.”
“Pretty much, and I don’t blame him. If I ever cross paths with that guy he’ll regret it.”
“Duo.”
“I can’t forgive someone that hurt you.”
Trowa sighed and turned, allowing his lover to pull him into his arms. There was no real point in having the discussion again. He buried his face between Duo’s neck and shoulder. “I’m glad I met you, Duo.”
“Me, too.”
The doorbell rang and Trowa cringed. He really wasn’t looking forward to this. Duo pulled away. “Can’t put this off.”
Trowa nodded and followed Duo down the stairs. They met the others in the living room and all talking stopped when Heero and Zechs got a look at him. Heero’s jaw clenched tightly as he crossed the space between them and studied Trowa’s face.
“What the hell happened?”
“An idiot. It’s over and he’s gone.”
Blue eyes narrowed. “Who?”
“It doesn’t matter, Heero.”
“Like hell it doesn’t! No one hurts my family and gets away with it.”
Trowa huffed. “I’m fine, Heero. I don’t need you to protect me. Please let it go.”
The Asian paled. “It isn’t that easy. Gods, Trowa, you know why it’s so hard for me to stand down where you’re concerned.”
He ducked his head and swallowed. “That was a long time ago. Things are different. I’m not in that place anymore.”
Duo frowned. “What are y’all talking about?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Trowa said.
Heero snorted and grabbed Trowa’s wrist. Trowa sucked in a breath when his friend shoved his wrist in front of Dou’s face, pointing out the faint years’ old scar.
He jerked his arm back, glaring at Heero. “The fuck!?” He looked to Duo’s wide horrified eyes and found similar expressions on Wufei and Quatre’s face. He shot a scathing look at Heero as he stormed outside. “Bastard!”
He leaned his hands on the railing that surrounded the deck, bending over slightly at the waist. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d been so pissed or humiliated. The night at Kushrenada’s was a close second, but this was far beyond that. Duo must think he was a mental patient or something. Or, at the very least, not stable.
“Trowa, I’m sorry.”
He squeezed his eyes shut tightly. “That was ten years ago, Heero.”
“I know, but you don’t understand. When I found you, unconscious and leaned over the tub with blood covering your hand, it felt as if my heart had been ripped out. The surgeon told me if I’d gotten you to the hospital minutes later there would have been nothing they could have done.”
Trowa hadn’t realized it’d been that close, and he’d never thought about how much that had hurt his friend. “I’m sorry I put you through that.”
Strong hands gripped his shoulders and he was turned to face pain-filled sapphire eyes. “I’m not looking for an apology. I just need you to understand you’re my brother. You’re the only family besides Zechs that I have. There are only two people in this world that I love and trust beyond all reason, and you’re one of them.”
Trowa swallowed harshly. I do understand. It’s just… I could lose my job, or Duo over this.”
“Why would you think you would?”
“They probably think I’m crazy or something.”
Heero shook his head. “No one thinks that.” He stared at Trowa for a long minute, eyes roaming over the angry black bruises. “I’m sorry I overreacted.”
He lifted a shoulder. “I was kind of expecting it.”
Heero stepped back. “We should get back inside.”
Trowa took a breath and nodded. He didn’t really want to face the others after having stormed out like some kind of diva, but he had to go inside sooner or later. He stepped in and looked to Duo, hating the fear in his boyfriend’s eyes.
“It was a few months after my parents and sister died. I’m not in that place anymore. I haven’t been for a long time.”
Duo wet his lips. “The scar doesn’t look that bad.”
He flushed. “I had plastic surgery to reduce it.”
“Shit.” He pulled Trowa tight to his chest as if he was afraid the other man would disappear.
“I’m fine, Duo. I have no desire whatsoever to take my life now. It was situational depression.”
Duo’s slow smile was weak but genuine. “I can understand that.” He relaxed his hold on Trowa slightly to look into those deep emerald eyes. “I love you.”
He laughed softly, not in mirth but relief, before kissing the braided man. “Thank you.” He took a breath. “Okay, now that the drama is over with, I say we eat.”
“How are you, Heero?” Quatre asked as they sat at the table.
He shook his head with a slight frown. “Had another seizure yesterday.”
Trowa’s eyes widened. “I thought the new meds were working.”
He shrugged and Zechs rubbed his shoulder. “Sometimes it takes a while to get the right combination and dosage. He’ll be okay.”
Trowa reached across the table to grip Heero’s hand. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It’s nothing new.” He leaned his elbows on the table, raking his hands through his hair. “I’ll probably never get my license back now. And if stuff keeps going on like this I’ll end up with permanent brain damage.”
“Heero-“
He shook his head and looked to Trowa. “Sorry, I’m just a little… down, right now.”
“The meds are causing some depression and mood swings.”
Heero pursed his lips as he glared at his lover. “Can you please stop trying to help.”
“Don’t be like that.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry.” He cleared his throat. “Can we talk about something else?”
Duo cleared his throat. “What do you think about going to the fair?”
Trowa shrugged. “Sounds like fun to me.”
“Oh, we could all go!” Quatre said excitedly.
“I’ll have to work,” Zechs said softly.
The other blond frowned. “Can’t you take one night off?”
“No.” He looked to Trowa. “Don’t worry about coming back. I’ve come up with a plan to make enough to cover the bills.”
Heero slammed his fist on the table. “I thought we were going to get out of that, Zechs. As long as we just keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll always be stuck here.”
Quatre appraised the couple. “Do you have any abilities that would work in a different job?”
Heero snorted. “Sure, but it doesn’t matter if you can program with the best if you don’t have a diploma to back it up.”
Quatre’s brow lifted. “You’re good with computers?”
Zechs chuckled. “Good is an understatement. You ask him to do it, and he can – so long as it doesn’t involve games or programs that could trigger a seizure.”
“Interesting. Come to my office tomorrow morning and we’ll talk.”
Heero started. “Come again?”
Instead of answering, Quatre looked to Zechs. “What about you?”
“I’m not really very good at much of anything.”
“I doubt that. Come with Heero in the morning and we’ll discuss it.”
Zechs looked to his lover. Neither of them liked the idea of charity, but they wanted out of the club and both were hard workers. He grinned. They’d planned to hold off their wedding until they found new jobs. This would push it up much quicker.
Heero frowned slightly. “What’s the grin for?”
“Oh, just thinking. We could probably have the ceremony in a month if Quatre hires us.”
“Ceremony?” Trowa said before his eyes widened. “You’re getting married?”
Heat crept up Heero’s cheeks but he smiled. “Zechs asked me yesterday.”
After a round of congratulations, a toast was offered to the newly engaged couple. And Quatre smiled. “So, I suppose we will all be enjoying the fair this Friday.”
Trowa looked to Duo. “I guess it’s a date.”
The braided man grinned. “Looking forward to it.”
The dinner wound down and while Trowa helped Duo and Quatre with the dishes, Heero pulled Wufei aside. “Who was it?”
The Chinese man appraised him for a moment. “Can you promise me no murder and no jail time?”
Heero smirked. “No prob.”
“Chris Stevens, used to work in Marketing. Trowa broke his brother’s nose.”
Blue eyes narrowed. “I remember that.”
“What you don’t know is that Chris was Kushrenada’s lover before Trowa.” He quickly filled Heero in on the events that occurred in the office the day before. The other Asian’s face continued to darken with every word. “Remember you promised me not to kill him and not to go to jail.”
Heero snorted. “Trust me, I won’t kill him or do anything that would implicate me.”
Wufei frowned slightly at the wording but let it go at that. He’d wanted charges pressed against the man as much as the others, but since Trowa was refusing to do it there wasn’t much they could do. So if Heero could get in some retribution, Wufei wasn’t going to stop him.
-----
Two days later there was an arrest report in the paper for one Chris Stevens who had outstanding arrest warrants two states over for assault, resisting arrest, and running from the law.
Wufei set the paper down, shaking his head. He had to hand it to Yuy. Stevens would still end up in jail without Trowa having to press charges.
“Wonder how he came across that information.”
“What?”
He looked to Quatre and quickly explained his conversation with Heero before letting his husband read the article.
“How do you know Heero had anything to do with it?”
He grunted. “You heard what Zechs said, if it dealt with computers Heero could do it. I’m fairly certain research and hacking falls under that category.”
TBC….
A/N Sorry for the delay in getting this posted, and I know it’s kind of short. Also, a HUGE thanks to OriginalCeeNote for all her help with getting Heero’s epilepsy as accurate as possible!! I hope this gets posted. I tried posting from my author's panel and it didn't work for some reason. :-(
