Again, here’s another of chapters added to fics for the first time in four years. It’s extremely hard to jump back into old fics, but I’ve got lots of ideas, so I hope y’all enjoy! ^_^
Of the two of us, I’m not sure who had the worst sleeping arrangements. Hospital sofas were terrible, but Duo and Wufei’s sofa was beyond horrible. Duo once told me that their sofa was extremely uncomfortable and he’d worried for Wufei’s back if he’d had to sleep on it one more night. ‘Uncomfortable’ was an understatement. If I have to sleep over again, I’m buying a new one for them… But Wufei would never go for that right now.I would have rather had Wufei stay at our house, but I understand his need to be home when he wasn’t at the hospital. As it was, Heero and I were very rarely home anymore, maybe once or twice a week. Most of the time there was no one at the house. I’d never really worried about the house being left alone. I’d never had a reason to.
So in the middle of Duo’s tragic ordeal, Wufei’s struggle to remain composed, our wait to find out if we would be parents soon; I came home to something I’d never considered happening.
-----Quatre pushed open the door, overnight bag and laptop case dropping to the floor as he moved into the overturned and destroyed living room. All he’d wanted was to take a shower and fall into bed. That would have to be delayed, though. He pursed his lips as he moved through the living room silently before making his way through the rest of the house. After a thorough search found no one else there and quite a few things missing, Quatre ground his teeth and returned to the living room and his laptop. This thief was in well over his head breaking into their house. Heero had decked it out with security that no one could really escape from. The only question was, why hadn’t the alarm sounded? He sat on the sofa and watched the footage of the robbery, making a mental list of everything that was taken. How the thief had known the code was beyond Quatre at the moment, but the idiot hadn’t even bothered with a mask. Of course, Quatre wouldn’t complain about that, it just made it easier for them to get him. He saved several pictures from the security feed and saved them to the computer.
“What the hell?”
He looked up at Marty’s shocked question. “Break-in. Looks like they had a key and the security code. Know anyone who’s lost their key?”
Marty grimaced. “Lance did.”
Quatre’s brows drew together and he called the grounds keeper. “Hey, would you mind coming over?”
“Sure. Everything okay?”
He hesitated. He didn’t want to worry Lance. He liked the man and didn’t believe for a minute he had anything to do with it, but he couldn’t take any chances. “We’ll discuss it when you get here. Okay?”
The man sighed softly. “All right, be there in ten.”
Nine minutes later, the pale grounds keeper was stepping into the living room. “Shit.”
“Hm.” Quatre turned his laptop to face the man. “Recognize him?”
Lance paled further and sat heavily. “His name is Greg. He’s my ex.”
Quatre frowned. “I thought you were with your childhood sweetheart.”
He nodded. “We broke up for a few years when we were in college. I dated Greg for a couple of semesters until I realized he was shagging half the gay population of Nashville.”
Quatre grimaced. “Yikes.”
He snorted. “Tell me about it. Anyway, he’s a lowlife.” Lance rubbed his face. “I should have realized he stole my key.”
“How’d he get the code?”
Lance flushed. “I’m sorry. I’m terrible with stuff like that, and – like an idiot – I wrote the code on the key.”
He sighed softly, but couldn’t exactly blame the man. Lance seemed to be extremely trusting and honest. “Do you know where we can find him?”
He snorted. “You could check any whorehouse in the city?” He cringed. “Sorry. I don’t, but I can give you plenty of ideas, along with his car description, plate number, and his favorite haunts.”
“I appreciate that.”
“It’s the least I can do.” Color had returned to his pale face and now it was reddening in anger. “That son of a bitch doesn’t care whose life he ruins.”
“Well, he won’t ruin ours, and I won’t let him ruin yours.”
Lance looked to the blond. “Thank you.”
He smiled. “You see, Lance, I know when someone is lying to me. Words and surface emotions can be faked, but not the heart.”
He frowned. “I don’t understand.”
“I’m an empath, better than any lie detector test out there. I know what’s at the heart of someone’s emotions. And you are as honest as they come, aren’t you?”
Lance flushed slightly. “I’m a terrible liar so I decided a long time ago to never even try.”
Quatre chuckled. “You remind me of a good friend of mine.” His phone rang and he glanced at the caller ID before quickly answering. “Ronnie, what’s up?”
He could hear the grin heavy in her voice. “What’s up?! Only the fact that in less than a year, you and Heero will be proud papas. What do you think of that?”
Quatre couldn’t keep the large smile from his own face. “I think I’m the happiest man in the world,” he glanced around the living room, “who really needs to call his lover and the police.”
“Police?”
He sighed. “Yeah, an idiot robbed us, but he’ll be in custody soon.”
“An idiot, indeed. I take it he didn’t even bother to find out who he was robbing, did he?”
Quatre chuckled. “Apparently not.”
-----Heero rubbed his cricked neck and downed a cup of coffee as he waited for the server to bring their breakfasts.“Hospital sofa getting to you?”
He looked across the table to Trowa. “Pretty much, but it’s only one more night before you and Ronnie give us a break so I’m pretty sure I can make it.”
Trowa chuckled softly. “I think I’ll bust Duo out for the night and rent a hotel room.”
“Good luck with that. The charge nurse is one hell of a force to be reckoned with.”
Trowa grimaced. “Yeah, I found that out the hard way.”
“Do I want to know?”
He smirked. “Probably not.”
Heero shook his head, answering his phone as Quatre’s ringtone chirped. “Hey.”
“Hi, lover, I have bad news, better news, and great news. Which do you want first?”
He laughed softly. “What’s the bad news?”
“We were robbed.”
Heero’s mirth dropped immediately. “What?”
“Don’t worry. I know who and how to get them.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll give you the details on that later. What do you want next?”
“Surprise me.”
Quatre laughed. “Okay. Actually, the better news is that Lance knows who did the robbery and how to catch them. The best news is that we’re going to be fathers!”
Heero swallowed harshly but forced back his reservations. “Great. Wow. I wasn’t expecting it that soon.”
“I know!” He cleared his throat. “Anyway, the police are here, so I’ll talk to you later. Love you!”
“Love you, too.” He hung up and set his phone down. He was happy. He wanted a child with Quatre. He wanted to give a child a life that he’d never been allowed to have. But he wasn’t sure if he was able to. What if he screwed the kid up beyond all repair?
“Are you okay?”
He looked up into emerald eyes. “It worked. Quatre and I will be parents in nine months.”
Trowa nodded, a smirk lifting his lips. “And you’re terrified.”
Heero straightened in his seat. “Of course not.”
He quirked an eyebrow. “Sure about that? Cause I sure was.”
Heero started. “What?”
Trowa chuckled. “Heero, all new parents are scared shitless. It’s part of the process. You’re no different from anyone else.”
“Really?”
He shook his head. “Yes, really, and trust me,” he smiled softly, “it’s all worth it. I’ve seen you and Quatre with Tami. You both will make awesome parents.”
Heero released a slow breath. “I hope so.”
Trowa laughed softly. “From one father to another,” he lifted his glass, “you’ll need all the help you can get, and you’ll take it without complaining.”
Heero tipped his glass against his friend’s. “Amen.” His brows drew down slightly. “You won’t take Duo’s outrageous gifts of loud noise out on us, will you?”
“Of course not,” he shrugged, “we have other plans for them.”
“Good to know.”
-----Wufei moved to the side of the bed as Duo showed signs of waking up from his nap. He sat on the edge of the bed when violet eyes opened and smiled. “Hey.”Duo returned the smile. “Hey.”
“How are you feeling today?”
He lifted a shoulder. “Better now that you’re here.”
Wufei leaned down and pressed a kiss to Duo’s forehead. “I’d stay all day everyday if we didn’t have nosey friends.”
Duo chuckled. “And you’d be worn out and cranky.” He sighed softly. “I’m starting heavier physical therapy tomorrow.”
“That’s good isn’t it?”
“I guess it’s good in the fact that I’m getting stronger, but…”
Wufei ran the back of his knuckles down Duo’s cheek. “But what?”
Duo flushed slightly and dropped his eyes to the blankets. “The bars bother me. I don’t like the idea of standing up when I can’t feel anything.”
Wufei tipped his chin up. “You’ll never walk again if you don’t try.”
He snorted. “What does it matter? I’ll never be able to work again. I’ll never-”
“They said it may be temporary,” Wufei said gently. “It’s still really early.”
Duo nodded slowly and laid his head back to the pillow. “I should have just waited for the damn flight.”
He shook his head. “It isn’t your fault.”
He snorted again. Everything had been going so good. His life had become something damn near perfect. “I always check aircrafts before taking off the ground. What the hell was I thinking?”
“You were tired, Duo. We’ve all done things like that.”
Duo raised an eyebrow as he looked to Wufei. “Sorry, but I know for a fact that you never have. Or Heero for that matter.”
Wufei smirked. “Tell that to Marty. He had to bring a can of gas to Heero on the side of the highway a month ago when he forgot to fill up.”
Violet eyes widened slightly and he couldn’t help the weak chuckle. “Heero Yuy? That is so not him.”
He nodded. “He was fairly embarrassed.” His mirth settled. “Of course, being stranded on the side of the road isn’t the same as a jet going down, but things happen.”
Duo nodded shortly and looked up to the ceiling. He was not used to being still, much less confined to a hospital bed. What would he do with his life if he never walked again? Preventers would be out, unless he took a desk job. With a grimace he vividly remembered Trowa’s struggles with having to be reassigned to a desk.
He groaned softly. “Shit.”
“What?”
“If we never have sex again I swear I’ll castrate every man who works at that airline.”
Wufei grunted. “Is that really your main concern?”
He looked back to his lover. “I’m still in the shock phase. Give me a few hours and I’ll be ready to blow my brains-“ He cut off, pressing his lips tightly together as horror filled Wufei’s face. “I don’t mean that.”
“I should hope not.” He pressed a soft kiss to Duo’s forehead. “I’m about to be stupidly corny so deal with it without too much fuss.”
Duo snickered. “Yes sir.”
He rolled his eyes before pulling Duo’s hand to his chest. “I very much enjoy sex, but I love you. I could deal with no sex, but I’m lost without you. It’s a miracle you’re alive. It’s a miracle you’re still you. If we never have sex again, I can deal with that as long as we’re together. Got it?”
Duo gave him a weak smile. “Got it.”
