Chapter 8: Unleashed
"Thank you, Shenron," said Piccolo. "That's all we need."
"You're welcome. Farewell... "
And with that, the sky turned blue again on the lookout. Krillin walked over to him carefully, sensing that Piccolo was extremely on edge. They'd just wished Gohan back after debating whether or not to do it since it happened; Gohan had died by suicide... he may not have wanted to come back. But seeing him with Cell only spurred Piccolo on to go through with it. They then used the second wish to bring him to the lookout.
"So are you going to tell us what's going on with Gohan, besides the depression."
"No. If he wants to talk to us about it, then we'll let his come to us."
Gohan suddenly walked out of the palace, slightly uneasy on his feet, disoriented by his surroundings. He was talking to Jeice two seconds ago - and now he was alive again.
"Why?" he growled in a low voice. He didn't want to be here, he died for a reason.
"I wasn't go to leave you there with him!" yelled Piccolo.
"Who?!" protested Krillin from the sidelines.
"Anything is better than this," cried Gohan. "I don't want to be here! I thought I made that pretty clear when I killed myself!"
"You were in Hell!"
"You were what?!" Krillin's eyes widened. He didn't realise how much he'd been missing lately. He thought Gohan would have gone to Heaven after all of his heroic efforts through his life. "But that isn't right!"
"That's exactly what I wanted to know... why were you down there? Did you find your way down from Heaven?" quizzed Piccolo. "Because even though you committed suicide, you shouldn't have been there! Not when you've saved the universe so many times!"
"I was there because I deserved to be!" said Gohan.
"What? I don't understand... " Piccolo unfolded his arms, realising that Gohan must have been doing much worse than he initially thought, especially to outweigh all of his good.
"Because when I killed myself, all I was thinking about was the look on my mother's face when she found me," admitted Gohan coldly. "I wanted out... I've had it trying to live my life to everyone else's expectations. "I wanted to hurt my mom, but most of all my dad."
"I saw the look on your mother's face when she found you," stated Piccolo. "There was no expression, it was like part of her died with you that night."
"And how am I supposed to go back to my life after that? Why didn't you just leave me in peace!"
"You weren't in peace! Not with Cell hanging around you like that!"
"Cell?!" Krillin stopped asking questions after that, now sensing that he wasn't being listened to.
"What was the point in wasting two wishes on me? You know I'll just kill myself again," laughed Gohan morbidly.
"No you are not! You are going to get help!" Gohan finally saw his former mentor show something that wasn't anger... it was sadness and worry. "Please, Gohan! Please don't throw it all away like your life means nothing!" Gohan looked away, not knowing how to react to that.
"Look... " Krillin edged towards Gohan slowly. "I'm going to take you back to Master Roshi's for a while. You can go home when you feel ready, okay?"
"Hey, Krillin! If you guys don't get down here before I finish this, don't come crying to me when it's all gone!" said Oolong, his mouth half-full with cake. Krillin frowned at him, picking up a glass of water, before heading upstairs. Master Roshi was worried for the both of them. They don't know what had happened to Gohan. It could have been too traumatizing for him to get back to normal.
Krillin closed the bedroom door behind him, bringing Gohan out of his thoughts. The saiyan was dressed in his gi, since that's all he ever left at Kame House in case he needed to change for an upcoming battle. Krillin placed the glass of water on the table next to the bed, where Gohan was sat on the edge; he didn't want to go home yet, he's been staying at Kame House for a three days now. He wasn't ready to face his mother after everything that he did before he died - and after.
Gohan had remained utterly silent since they left the lookout, only reacting to anything when Krillin revealed that Chi Chi didn't actually know that he'd been broguht back to life.
"How long was I gone for?" asked Gohan suddenly. Krillin jumped as the silence he'd grown accustomed to had finally broken.
"Just over three weeks."
"Really?" Gohan looked shocked by it.
"How long was it for you?"
"The same, but it felt longer," he answered. "I was waiting for you to try to wish me back. And then I was going to say no."
"Gohan... "
"But obviously, I didn't have a choice. I'm not the great Goku am I? I have to be dragged all the way back, and for what? To sit here wishing that I was dead again?"
"Don't talk like that! This is depression! You're just sick, that's all."
"It's more than that now... " said Gohan in a shaky voice. "How can I look at you or my mother knowing what I've done?"
"You mean suicide?"
"Not just that... "
"Gohan, what happened to you while you were dead?" asked Krillin carefully. Gohan's eyes were getting teary... yet he still refused to cry. "Why was Piccolo so bent on getting you out of there? Was it to do with Cell?"
"Yeah," he said silently.
"Did he hurt you?"
"Not exactly," said Gohan nervously. "I don't really want to talk about it."
"It's okay," said Krillin. "Talk about it when you're ready."
"I can't face my mom again..."
Master Roshi was sat on the red sofa in front of the TV with his hand on Krillin's shoulder. It was obvious to Krillin that Master Roshi had heard everything as soon as he came downstairs after consoling Gohan.
"I just... don't know what happened to him," said Krillin solemnly. "How did he get so lost without any of us noticing?"
"The death of a parent can be very distressing. And remember that Gohan is also a saiyan... maybe it was simply his nature to do something like this. React impulsively."
"We should have never forced him to fight. This is why he's like this. He didn't want to, so we shouldn't have dragged him into it."
Gohan stepped into the hot shower for a second time in an hour. No matter how much he cleaned himself, he still felt dirty - he could still feel Cell's hands on him.
Slipping back into his old habits, he took one of Krillin's razors from the sink nearby, slicing into his own wrist tentatively and letting the hot water rinse the wounds out as it bled. The way the shower stung the cuts only added to the release that Gohan had been craving once more. He couldn't exactly go back to Cell... but wait - he could. He only had to take the razor to his jugular and cut as deeply as possible into the artery.
But that sort of thinking just made him feel worse; he imagined Krillin breaking into the bathroom to find the shower red with blood, and his pale, naked body slumped lifelessly in the corner.
After his shower, he covered his cuts with wristbands like he usually did, trying to ignore an overwhelming sense of loss start to creep up on him. He was thinking about Cell. He stared into the floor - he actually missed him.
Gohan shook his head to snap himself out of it, heading downstairs washed and dressed to find Krillin waiting for him.
"I'm ready."
"Are you sure?"
Gohan nodded; he'd been staying with them for nine days at this point and put this moment off for as long as he could - but now it was time to face things. The two friends took to the sky, leaving Master Roshi to look on through the window.
Minutes later, they arrived at a familiar house in the woods. Gohan took a deep breath and walked towards the door. His mother usually made lunch round about now; then she'd take it up to his room where he was studying.
Chi Chi was indeed cooking, he could see through the window; she was still cooking for three instead of two. Goten had even grown a little bigger.
"Here you go, sweetie," she sighed, placing the food on the table, then staring at the empty seat which hadn't been used for the past month. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. She frowned slightly with annoyance as she was just about to sit down.
Placing the dish cloth on over her chair, she walked towards the front door and opened it, only to be lost for words when she saw her estranged eldest son standing in front of her. Gohan didn't say anything, he just looked into her eyes silently seeking forgiveness - he felt guilty for leaving her and his kid brother. They'd been left to fend for themselves.
As the previous moment registered in Chi Chi's head, she quickly embraced her son. Gohan hugged her back. A sudden warmth took him over as he felt at ease to be at home.
"Gohan!"
The boy looked down over his mother's shoulder to see his younger sibling waving his spoon at him with a big grin. Gohan smiled weakly back at him.
Later that day, Gohan sat in the living room with Goten, watching cartoons after his mother fed him until he was almost sick. He and Chi Chi hadn't spoken of what happened regarding Gohan's suicide yet, neither of them ready for it. Goten's innocent laugh reminded Gohan of his father so much. No matter what he thought of Goku right now, he couldn't help but love Goten, even though they were so similar.
"We interrupt this program for some breaking news!"
Chi Chi walked in suddenly upon hearing the TV.
"Oh my, what's happening?"
All three of them watched closely as the news team appeared.
"It seems that the dead are walking the Earth as the deceased are taking over the streets. Some are uniting with their families, whereas some are terrorising the cities."
Gohan had a bad feeling about this.
"Gingertown has been targeted by monsters. We're live outside the city."
The camera switched over to another news reporter with a helmet and fire proof clothing on.
"As you can see, Gingertown is being torn apart by these monsters. There are many killed, many more injured and hundreds still missing... "
Gohan's eyes widened as there was a close up of one of the monsters. It was quite short, pale-skinned with purple markings and a long tail.
"Frieza!"
"DO IT!"
Jeice was being held by his hair; harshly shook forward as he didn't answer Frieza. The mutant began to cry. He didn't want to kill. Not anymore.
"I SAID DESTROY THEM!"
Jeice opened his tearful green eyes to see a dark-haired woman, protectively holding her son. He couldn't have been more than seven years old.
"NO!" he cried as a pink flash of energy swallowed up the screaming humans. Frieza dropped Jeice onto the ground. On his hands and knees, Jeice let himself cry, his fingers digging into the ground.
"HOW COULD YOU!?"
"Don't give me that, you worthless, stupid coward!" spat Frieza. "You work for me!"
"Not anymore I don't!" Jeice got onto his feet uneasily. Frieza suddenly knocked him down and stood on his back.
"You aren't going anywhere until you start murdering this pitiful race!"
"Chiaotzu!" cried Tien as he caught sight of his small friend in the dark sky. Yamcha was barely surviving on the ground; blood was oozing out of his twisted leg. They were forced into hiding after some of Frieza's elite fighters overwhelmed them; they barely escaped with their lives thanks to Tien's solar flare technique.
"Aah... oow... " was all Yamcha could get past his lips as Tien attempted to relocate his leg. Chiaotzu landed inside the cave and attempted to telekinetically seal it with a boulder.
"No, Chiaotzu! They'll sense you!" cried Tien before Chiaotzu could manage to gather his ki. "I'll move it. You go and help Yamcha!" The partners switched places, and the cave was sealed completely from the wind and rain which battered the three fighters constantly. They managed to start a small camp fire after a few minutes to bring some light and warmth back into their lives.
"We - we need Goku ... " whispered Yamcha, defeat heavily controlling his voice. Tien and Chiaotzu hung their heads at the sound of his name.
The man was dead. It had been painfully slow. Cell recalled it lasting around 5 hours, 34 minutes and 43 seconds exactly when he carefully burned away that last peace of skin on the man's chest. This was his second masterpiece since escaping from Hell. His last victim was a woman in her mid-thirties; he cracked open her jaws as wide as he could and proceeded to turn her inside out, driving his fist through her organs and shattering her rib cage, pelvis and spine before finally reaching the main bone in her left foot, yanking it back out, then eventually did the other. In the end she was just a bloody heap.
Curiosity always got the better of Cell. The android decided that this time he would torture the humans slowly one by one in different ways and not take them for granted like the last time. He finally stood back and looked at the man he'd just destroyed: completely flayed in a pool in his own blood. Cell cocked his head sharply, observant as he was, and then finally walked away.
Goku frantically searched for anybody he knew as he ran through the entrance to Capsule Corporation. He followed a large crowd of scared people who were being evacuated into a bunker underground, hoping he'd find who he was looking for.
"Hello?! Anyone?!"
"Kakarot?"
Goku turned around to see Vegeta, along with a nasty cut on his forehead.
"What happened?"
"Don't worry. One of Frieza's minions got a lucky shot," he said, smirking. "Looks like it isn't just Hell that's been unleashed. Unless you've been wished back."
"Nope, still dead," he said with a smile. "Where's Bulma?"
"She and Trunks are underground trying to control the crowds. I trust she knows what she's doing. We have to find Frieza before he causes anymore damage. Where's that brat of yours got to? We could use his help. I heard he was wished back himself not too long ago."
Vegeta had to force that last sentence out of his mouth, despite what happened the last time the two of them were on a battlefield at the Cell Games. Goku didn't answer - he was dreading the next time he would see Gohan.
