Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Eighty
“Can we talk about that? Make it the exception?”
“Nope,” you said with a tone that was far more firm than you felt.
The situation had shifted its tone quickly. The whole thing had gone from serious, with a twinge of anger on Goku’s part, to feeling almost desperate. After you said that he couldn’t hurt Gohan, Goku returned with the fact that you couldn’t marry said teenager or anyone else for that matter that wasn’t him. That had made you feel a bit too stifled given the fact that because of the circumstances that was hippocrytical of him. Though apparently if he could change that you had a feeling he’d do it in a heartbeat regardless of how much it would hurt his pre-existing family. All of that was the reason you had asked him to reconsider by means of talking about it later.
He had refused. In “payment” of not hurting Gohan he wanted you to promise not to marry him. He hasn’t budged on that. So you returned with a pretty severe rule of your own - no sexual activities of any kind. He’d rebuked that notion at first but then accepted it as long as he got to feel his unborn child grow by touching your belly whenever he wanted. That was how firm he was on the idea of you not marrying Gohan. Right up to the point where you reminded him of the fact that meant he couldn’t sleep next to you and cuddle you during sleep. That had apparently gone too far in his perspective. So now he was asking you to reconsider; you were going to hold out for as long as you could against him.
“That’s not fair,” he pouted like a child as he looked at you. “I used to hold you all the time before we ever had sex!”
He wasn’t wrong. You’d learned early on that Goku was a fiddler in his sleep. And given half a chance he would hold you well past the time to get up. You remembered feeling foolish most of the time for feeling like it had been more than he probably meant. Right up to the point of him getting you away from the athlete all so long ago. Apparently he’d harbored romantic inclinations long before either you or he really realized that. Or, at least in Goku’s case, realized exactly what that entailed more so the fact that they were there.
“You don’t think it’s a sexual act?” You asked him in a tone that most people would have realized was setting up a trap.
“No,” Goku said with a frown.
Oh boy you were about to play dirty. But at this point you realized that playing hard and for keeps was the way that Goku learned the best. He wanted you to list seven rules and only seven that he had to listen to when it came to your future relationship. Each time he got to say something he wanted in return. And he seemed adamant on all of his points. You needed to show him how bad being inflexible really was.
“People hug their friends all the time without it being about sex,” Goku reasoned fairly well.
“That’s true. But Goku - try to imagine it. Picture me laying down, in bed, arms wrapped around me. I can feel their breathing, their heart, my back is completely against them. Their hands are near my chest and my butt is near their private area. They’re whispering in my ear about things they want to do in the future. And it’s not you behind me; it’s Gohan or any other guy.”
“No,” Goku said firmly as his eyes narrowed angrily. “No. That’s not okay.”
“Why? You just said it wasn’t sexual right?” You backed him into a proverbial corner.
“Damn it,” Goku hissed under his breath, which shocked you quite a bit. “I can’t...just stop.”
“Stop what?”
“You’re mine. My friend. My mate. My wife. That’s our baby inside of you. Stop trying to push me away. It’s not my fault that I married Chichi. It’s not my fault that I had a family with her while you were away. I couldn’t remember you. If I had...none of this would be a problem!”
You smiled sadly as you moved over to him. You didn’t have to go very far. Slowly you moved to hug him. His arms dropped from their crossed position rather quickly so that you could rest your head on his chest. You felt his heart beating erratically despite the fact that he was technically dead. And you felt his arms wrapping around you. He hugged you desperately. With the height difference it felt like he was scrambling to hold on to you.
After a moment you shifted your hands to hold on to his shoulders. You pretty much climbed up onto him using your hands and legs, curling yourself around his much bigger form. His head instantly went towards your neck as his arms tightened around you. You felt like nothing else had to matter in that moment. And it was oddly comforting and comfortable like that. You yawned against him and smiled.
“Look, I know I put a lot of rules on this. And I know they don’t seem fair. I hate a lot of them too,” you murmured to him. “But I’m trying to keep everyone safe and happy. I’m doing my best.”
“I’m happy when I’m with you,” Goku said gently, stressing your involvement in his happiness.
“I know. I don’t get why after all of this shit, but I know that much. And even when it feels like I’m being unfair, I love you too Goku. So much. But I just...everything is so complicated now.”
“Let’s make it simple again. Just you and me. And our daughter. We can go somewhere and start over.”
You smiled at the thought. But guilt and doubt crept up at you. You couldn’t join in on Goku’s idea of keeping everything simple. You’d miss your friends too much. And a lot of modern entertainment and convenience. As much as you loved Goku you knew that you couldn’t become the type of person that would be okay with that much isolation - you weren’t Chichi. Besides all that there was the fact that even if you could isolate yourself like that, you doubted the world would let you. There were other people to consider now; Gohan, certainly, but there was also Broly, Goten, and Trunks. Not to mention the fact that Goku had another kid on the way. If he truly abandoned the kid just because it was easier, you’d think a lot less of him. You weren’t sure that knowledge wouldn’t turn into insecurity and resentment over time.
“Can’t do that. I made too many promises,” you said as you yawned, fighting through the tired feeling that dragged you down.
“You made me a lot of promises too,” Goku reminded you with a whisper. “We’re supposed to live together at my grandpas house. I’m supposed to build us a house for our hundred children. A room to store my training stuff too. We’re supposed to be happy.”
“Yeah, life sucks like that,” you said as you clung to him. “Maybe we weren’t supposed to be together. Maybe us meeting back then was just a fluke. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to meet you until around now.”
What if it wasn’t supposed to be him that you fell in love with first? What if destiny had it so that you were always meant to meet Gohan in High School and keep him company instead? After all, you had run away around the time that your adopted parents had been planning to take you back to Yardrats and fix you up. Your search for the dragonballs with Goku had only delayed their plans. If you hadn’t gone off with him you could have come back to Earth unfettered by guilt.
Hell, maybe destiny meant for you to be around Broly instead. After all, he’d been frozen in time too. Though his had been quite literal. And out of all the saiyans he probably needed a companion the most. He needed you to keep the rest of the universe safe from his issues.
“No,” Goku refused as his hands grabbed at you desperately, needily despite the fact that you had no intention of letting him go either. “I don’t believe that.”
“Everything keeps making it seem like that though, doesn’t it?” You asked him quietly. “Like every time we get close...and we’re happy...something happens. Something that usually makes us separate. What if that’s the universe’s way of trying to correct its mistake when it let us meet? Like trying to correct the flow of time and everything we’re doing is just fighting against it.”
“I don’t care if it was an accident, that we weren’t supposed to meet. I will keep fighting the Universe if I have to,” Goku reasoned passionately. “I like fighting. So it’ll be okay.”
“You’re always so sure of yourself,” you said with a small smile despite the fact that he could see it from how you were positioned around him.
“Hmmm because everything always works out as long as we try our hardest. You’ll see.”
“Goku…” you breathed out in a tone of regret as your smile started to fade. Your heart clenched painfully in your chest as you blinked heavily. “You have to stay with Chichi. I won’t ever stop you from being a dad to our kid but...she won’t be the only one you’ll have to take care of soon. Goten needs you. Yours and Chichi’s kid will need you. They won’t have anyone else to help them.”
Goku slowly loosened his grip as you loosened your legs from around him. It took a lot of energy to stay up like that. More than it should. And the concerned look on his face did not help you to feel rejuvenated.
“But you do?” He probed.
You stayed quiet at that. Anxiety and guilt ate at you from the inside out. Nothing was certain at this point but from what you could tell you would have plenty of help. It was just mainly money that you needed to worry about at this point. And from what you had seen Goku wasn’t in a position to help with that even if you wanted him to.
“Who’s going to help you if it’s not me?” He probed again, hands on your shoulders.
You tried to meet his eyes but it was hard. Everytime you did you felt guilty. You knew that he knew you meant Gohan. He was the main point of contention between you and Goku it seemed. But you also had support coming from Broly too as weird as that was. From what you had gathered you doubted that Goku would like that notion either. Plus there was the fact that you were a whole lot more independent than Chichi. Unlike her, you didn’t mind getting your hands dirty and working for what you wanted. She seemed to just want to sap resources off of those around her.
“Look that’s four out of seven so far,” you tried to redirect the conversation. “Let’s just say the fifth one is no fighting others cause you’re jealous.”
Goku called your name almost warningly. “Who wants to help you?”
“Goku...you already know who.”
His grip on your shoulders changed abruptly as he went back to hugging you. You felt his large hand on the back of your head, keeping your head to his chest. You didn’t fight him. Though you did curl your hands under your chin instead of wrapping them around him.
“No. No. Husbands take care of their wives so I will take care of you. That’s my job.”
“Goku we’re not married.”
You hated saying that. Hated it with a passion.
“Stop saying that,” Goku echoed your internal struggle. “I don’t care about some stupid law. I never have. You’re my wife in all ways that matter to me. And I will be your husband.”
You had a feeling this was an argument that no matter what you said, you were going to lose. Honestly you wanted to lose it. Goku had a way of making you feel safe and loved. He didn’t really judge you or try to empathize with you to feel closer to you. It just happened. Like a natural pull that bound you and him together with no explanation whatsoever.
“I think I need to go back now Goku. I’m really tired.”
“You can go to sleep here,” Goku said quietly, with the same resolute tone from just a moment ago.
You shook your head against him, yawning. “I think it’s being here, touching you, that’s making me lose energy. Seeing as I just woke up it’s the only thing that makes sense. The purple man said that being here to help shouldn’t weaken me to the point that I loose the kid or anything like bringing you back without the dragonballs would but… kind of sounded like he was implying I shouldn’t stay long for my own health.”
“I don’t want to let you go,” Goku said with a frown.
“Hey, we’ll see each other again soon. Just gotta wait till Bulma finishes the machine then I’ll wish you back as soon as I can. Just remember all the rules do far okay?”
Goku nodded slowly. He had no intention of keeping them all; well, he’d find a way for you to break them for him. But he didn’t say anything. Instead he walked quietly back with you towards where the Supreme Kai was patiently waiting.
