Dragonball: Unforgotten
Chapter Eighty-Two
“Is it just me or has the nerd been glaring at us for the last ten minutes?” Sharpner asked.
The blond was too tall for you to be able to look over his shoulder without flying. So instead you waited till you could maneuver towards where Gohan was at your side. At which point you weren’t even subtle as you stared right back at the teenage saiyan. Sharpner was right - Gohan had passed staring a while ago and slide right into glaring.
“Why do you even call him a nerd?” You asked to distract your date from the aggressive gaze of your boyfriend.
“Cause he is one,” he replied.
“But you say it like it’s a bad thing,” you pointed out.
“The kid spends all his time studying. That’s not normal.”
“Hmm,” You mused over quietly as the music started to fade to the next song. “You’re right. He’s always studying but trust me, that’s not a bad thing. Martial Arts is on his study list.”
“You know, even though I saw it for myself I’m having a hard time accepting that the nerd is the great saiyaman. It just doesn’t match up.”
“When’s the last time you saw him change for gym?” You asked him quietly as you moved with the music.
Which, you noticed from his energy patterns, only further irritated Gohan. You were pretty touchy feely looking with Sharpner at the moment. But really that was just the nature of the dance. Teachers tried their best to keep the songs relatively appropriate for school but even with that, there was too much touching in Gohan’s opinion. Which was much more conservative at that moment simply because you were dancing with someone else.
“What does that matter?”
“Sharpner...Gohan is ripped as fuck,” you said bluntly. “And if you haven’t noticed his proportion from shoulder to waist looking like a dorito more now than ever before, you’re either blind or in denial.”
“Oh yeah?” He asked challengingly.
“Yes. Trust me. He’s definitely the great saiyaman.”
The fact that Erasa had left her date to go talk to Gohan shouldn’t bother you. They were friends after all. She’d been his biggest human supporter in the school. Even to the point that she had figured out his double identity before Videl. Then there was also the broken bone thing that had happened between them recently too. So it shouldn’t have been a surprise that she went to talk with him. It shouldn’t have bothered you. It did...but it shouldn’t have.
The fact that it bothered you even a little made you feel hippocrytical. You had no right to be possessive and jealous over anyone, much less Gohan. Not only were you dancing with another man but there were a lot of things going on in your relational life. Goku still was adamant that you and he were married. You were even pregnant with his daughter. Then there was Broly who was kind of waiting for his chance to increase the species. Which was a fight and a half you weren’t looking forward to. So the fact that Gohan might have more romantic attention from other girls shouldn’t bother you. It did; but you felt bad about that.
“Guess Erasa noticed,” Sharpner commented before a few couples blocked your view.
“Told you. He’s hard to miss,” you responded.
“Yeah, whatever.”
You smiled at that, but only in the barest sense. Sharpner’s ego was deceptively fragile at certain times. At other points he was as resolute as a mountain. It was nice seeing some of his fragility. Even if it came from an unpleasant circumstance.
It was only a few more songs before the teachers mixed in some more traditional, slow dancing songs. It was not an area you excelled at considering that you'd never formally had lessons. Neither had Sharpner from what you could tell. But you and he muddled through them reasonably well. About as well as most High Schoolers you supposed. It wasn't until about mid way through the dance that you and he stopped to get drinks. At which point you downed at least two bottles of water while "snacking" on as much as you could get a hold of without seeming too abnormal.
"Hungry?" Sharpner teased in a sardonic voice.
"You have no idea," you smiled at him.
"What do you say to skipping the rest of this lamefest and going out to get some burgers then?"
"Not on your life, blondie," you replied back, flicking him in the nose. "You wanted the austariety of taking the school slut to the dance, you have to stay here all night."
"Don't call yourself that," Sharpner said in a moment of seriousness. "We both know that you and the nerd haven't done anything."
"...yeah, about that," you edged with as your smile turned guilty.
"Wow, seriously?" His expression slowly morphed into surprise as the reality of the situation set in.
You nodded in response to his question.
"That why he bulked up?"
...well...he wasn't entirely wrong. You supposed sex could have been a motivating factor in why Gohan had been training. Though you would rather think it was the fact that he wanted to help protect you from getting hurt. At least in part. It was just that you couldn't refute Sharpner's assumptions entirely. He might have been right in part and if you tried to explain the situation you'd be telling him a lot of personal things that involved Gohan's life. Even after he roundabout insulted you tonight, you didn't want to ruin anything for him. And somehow telling Sharpner the situation with Broly, Gohan, and Goku felt like you'd ruin something for the other teenager. So even though you hated lying you decided it was best not to elaborate.
"And we might have gotten into a bit of a fight because I told him that you were my date," you filled him in on the average situation that most people would expect from such a night instead.
"Damn, no wonder he's been dogging us all night."
Yeah, you'd expected that was the reason. Although you wondered if his logic from last time still held up. Was he angry at you for going with Sharpner? Or, like the time during lunch at school, was he just angry at Sharpner for taking your time? Was it a combination of the two? You really had no way of knowing without asking. And although there were plenty of chances for you to walk over to him through the crowd to ask you just didn't want to. Some part of you was still quite miffed over the angry question that he'd asked.
Did commitment mean nothing to you?
That question, coming from him, had hurt far more than it had any right to. And because of that pain, you'd gotten so angry at him that you couldn't stand to look him in the face. Gohan, above anyone, knew how much you were struggling because of the idea of commitment. He knew better than perhaps even Goku did. You were trying to keep Gohan's family together while at the same time keeping peace for the universe. Not only that but now you had to juggle the impending situation of being a parent with a man who was still married to another woman. One that, by all evidence, he wouldn't be married to if it wasn't for a wish made against his will.
The fact that Gohan even remotely thought that you'd "cheat" on him, that you took his protestation of a relationship as anything other than serious...well, that's exactly why you hadn't wanted to talk to him all night. Who knows what you might spill out about all of the times you had talked with Goku since he remembered in a fit of anger. You might be pissed at him but...again...he really hadn't deserved to get caught up in all the mess that surrounded you. And despite your efforts (admittedly not your best) he had been brought into the mess regardlessly. Which was why you were doing your best to shelter him in any way you could instead. For example you hadn't spewed out the fact that Goku practically told you that he never wanted to be in a relationship with Chichi and that she had tricked him in order to get him to the altar.
Sharpner grabbed at your hand with a wicked smile as he lead you back out to the dance floor. The songs had picked up while you were munching and drinking, lost in your stew that some people might call thoughts. You had a bad feeling about what he was doing so you stopped once you were in a thicket full of people. Because of the disparity of strength, Sharpner was also forced to stop.
"What gives?"
"What are you doing?"
"Might as well give the dweeb something to be jealous of if he's going to be glaring at us all night."
"Don't call him that," you said on reflex before you realized what Sharpner said. You glared at him with pursed lips.
He laughed goodnaturedly, brushing his hand through his hair with a charming smile. "Hey, relax. Nothing like that. Just some dancing."
"...I'll do my best not to let him kill you," you replied mildly.
But the idea of showing Gohan that you had your own agency without actually breaking any promises was an enticing idea. With everything that had happened you and he had never actually talked about how to handle the relationship; how to make it work with everything going on. It was just assumed on both yours and his part and apparently you had assumed more freedom for yourself than he had. Which, considering how Goku was acting as well, was mildly upsetting. The last thing you wanted was to be caged in by someone who was too possessive. You liked feeling protected and cared for sure...but like you told Goku, you weren't a slave. And you were by no means Chichi. You wouldn't stand for being the woman that either of them got to claim but was kept in the background of their lives. Even with a kid on the way you were determined in the fact that you had your own life to lead.
So you may have started to enjoy dancing a bit too much as you laughed and carried on with Sharpner. Even to the point that you didn't keep track of where Gohan was. Which was maybe a bit of a mistake. He'd gotten behind you without you noticing, replacing Sharpner who got off easy with just a sore elbow. But what you didn't miss was when you moved back on the next beat, the person holding you was much harder, with much stronger hands than Sharpner's.
"Hey Gohan," you guessed without even having to check for energy signatures.
He held you back against him as the song continued. You couldn't help but feel quite tense given the situation. Especially seeing as you hadn't been able to see what he did with Sharpner. Given the fact that no one was screaming or making a lot of ruckus you supposed your human friend hadn't actually been hurt. Besides, Gohan didn't seem like the kind of guy who really went out of his way to hurt people. Though you had joked about doing your best not to let said half-saiyan kill your human friend it had mostly been just that - a joke.
You felt him turning you around as another song started. His hands were actually quite forceful as you tried to stop from having to look at him in the fact. As he out muscled you, you glared up at him with a cross look on your face. He seemed serious even amidst the softly colored traveling lights of the prom.
"I didn't mean it," Gohan started as he held you close to him. "I'm sorry. I know how much your promises me to you. You just really caught me off guard. I thought...since we're...you know...dating, that meant we were going to prom together too."
"He asked me way before you mentioned anything about even being jealous. Which I would have explained if you gave me time."
"I know, I made a mistake. I'm sorry."
"Uhmmm," you made a 'you better be sorry' sort of sound in the back of your throat. "One day, when you least expect it...I'm going to punch you in the throat. So you know how it feels. Afterwards, you'll know we're good. More or less. Right now, still kind of pissed at you."
Gohan winced as the bite in your voice set in, "That's...fair. But can you please stop dancing with Sharpner like that?"
You continued to purse your lips as you looked up at him. It was probably just the fact that you were already angry at him but that request really fired you up.
"Gohan - look, like I told Goku - you don't own me. That's not what a relationship is."
He seemed stunned as he completely stopped moving.
"But…" you took a deep breath, "I get it - jealousy sucks. And I might have went a bit too far. Sorry about that."
This time Gohan realized it was time to keep his mouth closed. He was a genius after all. And since he was doing his best to keep the peace you tried to shut it away too. At least till later. You did promise to punch him in the throat when he least expected it after all. With that in mind, you pulled Gohan to the side and leaned up against one of the walls between two sets of girls that were chatting about how much their feet hurt. Totally why they should have worn short heels like you did.
"I never thought I owned you," Gohan said quietly as you leaned against the wall. "I just don't like seeing you that...close with another guy."
Huh, see, this was only going to feed into the slut trope you had going on at school. Despite the fact that the girls around you were talking about their shoes and their feet you knew better than to think that they weren't listening in. Multi-tasking like that was kind of what girls did. Especially when a guy as obviously cut as Gohan was around; it was hard to hide the broad shoulders and small waist in a suit as well fitted to him as the one he had on. And though you weren't necessarily fat, next to him you felt like you were. Which, you realized was irrational. You were female, thus it was actually healtheir for you to have twice the percentage of body fat as any guy. On top of that you were pregnant. About seven weeks pregnant in all, give or take. You were still damned skinny all things considering.
But he still made you feel a bit fat. You'd store that away and use it for fuel for your punch later. Right now there were other things to consider. Like responding to him.
"We'll talk about it later. But I get it, I do. Trust me; you have no idea how much I get it."
You really did too. Back at the Martial Arts Tournament you'd seen Goku near Chichi and it had almost been too much for you to handle. You'd been angry, yes, but there had been a plethora of emotions. So many of them that you'd felt sick. You'd wanted to run away from the situation and Gohan hadn't let you do that. But it seemed like Gohan had a different sort of response to the overwhelming emotions. Much like Goku he went straight to anger. From all the movies you'd seen and people watching you'd done you figured that was more of a stereotypical male reaction regardless of species.
"So will you please just stop doing that?" Gohan asked as he bowed his head.
"Stop dancing with Sharpner?" You asked him directly. He shifted in his position slightly but nodded. "Sure. But the prom is still going on so you're taking over as my dance partner."
Gohan looked at you in surprise. "I thought you were mad at me?"
"Still am but I want to enjoy tonight and have fun. If it makes you feel any better I can always pretend you're Sharpner," the last part was a tease and you realized you might have gone a little too far with that.
Gohan did not take it as a joke. He frowned down at you. It was such an intense wave of Deja'vu sort of sensation that it hurt to breathe. You expected him to suddenly call out the word 'no' so loud that people all around would be able to hear him. He didn't. He wasn't Goku.
Instead he simply moved into your personal space and leaned down till his mouth was hovering right above your hair. "Don't joke about that. When you're with me...you're with me. No one else."
...oh, damn. You must have hit a nerve with that joke. Because he was practically shaking where he stood. Also - serious Gohan was kind of hott. But then again, he was alluring when he was being unwittingly innocent. It was just that the serious moments made you want to kiss him and the innocent one made you want to snuggle and never let go.
You settled for bumping his head up and grabbing him by his wrist to lead him out to the dance floor again.
