Summary: The Bladebreakers have a new member. But what does this mean for Kai and Rei's relationship? And what secrets does he have to hide? Lemon in other chapters. KaixRei, ReixOC, with a dash of TysonxMax.

Chapter 10 The Angel Who Loved a Devil

(A/N: This is the long and tedious explain-it-all chapter. Most of it has no implications on this story at all, but if I do a sequel I might draw from here. There is some action at the start, and an important revelation near the end, but if you like your fanfics short and simple, then this is not the chapter for you.)

"Go, Dreamer!"

"Go, Volten!"

A shiny silver beyblade, Dreamer, and a blood red beyblade, Volten, flew towards the dish in the dungeon.

"Shatter attack!"

"That won't cut it, Dreamer!" Voltaire laughed as his beyblade avoided the attack with ease.

"We'll see," Xan said silently through clenched teeth as both beyblades landed in the dish.

"Volten, show him your full might!"

A large devil, larger than Dreamer, emerged from Voltaire's beyblade. It had red scaly skin, bolldshot eyes and menacing jaws. The large, batlike wings and the dangerous claws gleaming in the darkness completed the image. It let out a deafening high-pitched scream and was ready to kill.

"Dreamer, you go as well!"

But instead of the devil Kai had expected, the bit beast that emerged from Xan's beyblade took the form of an angel instead. Dreamer stood unfazed in the face of its menacing devil. The two bit beasts looked into each other's eyes, hatred like he had never felt before burning in their hearts.

"Twin Claws attack, Volten!"

Volten charged right at Dreamer, but Dreamer remained there, unblinking. As Volten shot past, it extended a sharp claw, slashing Dreamer in the abdomen. As Volten reached the edge of the dish, he spun around and returned for another blow.

"Angelic Wind!"

Dreamer flew into the air, avoiding Volten's attack. It started spinning around to create a hurricane around itself.

"Volten, Demonic Lightning!"

Voltaire's beyblade shot towards Xan's, while Volten prepared a spell. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning shot out from the air above, headed straight for Dreamer. Just as quickly, Dreamer disappeared and reappeared at the other end of the dish, and all Volten's attack left was a scorch mark on the stone.

"Infernal Blaze!"

Volten moved to the middle of the dish and started to spin faster and faster, until the friction with the stone caused it to catch fire. The small flame soon grew into a giant pillar of fire above Voltaire's beyblade. It then went straight for Xan's beyblade, leaving a blaze of fire behind it.

"Dreamer, move away!"

Dreamer shot over to the other end of the dish, but Volten followed. Soon, this caused the dish to turn into a bowl of blazing fire.

"Twin Claws!"

Neither Xan nor Kai could see anything in the blinding flames below. The next thing they knew, Dreamer was sent flying out of the dish. Volten turned his malicious glare to Xan, and so did Voltaire.

"Finish him off!"

To Kai's horror, Volten stepped out of the energy vortex the projected out of he beyblade's bit chip, which he thought bit beasts were confined to. It shot into the air, landing on its feet in front of Xan. Lifting a massive claw, Volten thrust it right through Xan's chest, causing Xan to gasp in pain. Volten then pulled his claw out.

Suddenly, everything around Kai stopped moving. Volten froze with its claw in the air. Voltaire wore a twisted expression on his face, delighting in the murder of Xan. The flames on the dish had stopped licking the air above.

Kai turned to look at Xan, who turned to look at him.

"What's happening?"

"Dreamer created a time warp. We have something to tell you before I die."

"Why didn't you do this before Volten did.. that? You could have survived!"

"No. My death is inevitable. Anyway I don't want to escape it."

"You knew you were going to die all along? Then why did you still have to fight Voltaire?"

"That's what we need to explain to you. Dreamer will start first. Dreamer?"

An angel appeared right behind Xan.

"We need to hurry. I can't sustain this warp forever."

"You can start."

"Fine." Dreamer turned to Kai. "Perhaps I should start from the beginning. I am an angel from Heaven."

Kai snickered. "Heaven? I suppose you're gonna tell me Hell exists too."

"The true Heaven is not a place where departed souls go. It is like... another country. Another land, another world. The world of angels. Similarly for Hell, except it belongs to devils and demons instead."

"Oh... I never knew..."

"There are many things human folklore has masked."

"Do all angels, devils and demons exist as bit beasts?"

"No. In our own world, we are as real as humans are here. It is because this world cannot support our power, that's why we have to exist as bit beasts here. You know computers, right? It's similar to tryin ope open a Word 2000 document with Word 95. Anyway, as I was saying, I was an angel in Heaven. I had the job of guarding "Crystallis", a secret prototype-stage weapon the angels were building to use against the devils. You see, the angels and devils are constant enemies. Well, everything was going on fine, and the "Crystallis" was nearly completed. But then, I made the biggest mistake of my life."

"What happened?"

"I fell in love with a devil. Volten."

"What?!"

"You see, one special characteristic of angels and devils is that angels can only mate with devils and vice versa. Of course, with our technology we were able to create artificial offspring, buthinthing could replace love."

"I... I think I understand."

"Of course you do. Rei and you, love that transcends boundaries. Well, anyway, in those days I had heard stories of devils capturing and raping angels. The devils would then bear the children, such that their race would not die ou kne knew Volten didn't have those intentions. I was right. But what I didn't expect were that his intentions were more sinister. The devils were aware of the existence of the "Crystallis" project, but they didn't have any details. Volten kept pestering me to tell, but I refused. Then, he tainted me."

"Taint?"

"According to ancient angel folklore, when an angel and devil decide to seal their relationship, the devil would taint the angel by leaving an emotional mng. ng. This would give the devil total control over the angel. Both the angel and devil had to be agreeable for the tainting to be successful, but I didn't know better then."

"Was there anyway to break this tainting?"

"There ne. ne. First, the devil had to give up control over the angel, then the angel had to win back his freedom in a battle. That was why I had to fight Volten just now."

"Oh."

"Another thing is that the control sets in gradually. Thus, I was able to get a friend to hide "Crystallis" before I lost control. Volten was enraged. He tortured my friend to insanity, but all he found out was that the weapon had been hidden here, on Earth. So, he came, bringing me along."

"Wouldn't he be converted into bit beast form if he did so?"

"Yes. But soon after arrving here, he found a small boy named Voltaire."

"Voltaire!"

"Yes. Voltaire used Volten as his bit beast. Slowly, Volten extended his control over Voltaire, until he too was controlled by Volten. Volten's intentions slowly shifted from getting "Crystallis" to conquering Earth."

"But how about you?"

"I was kept by Volten in bit beast form, until he let Xan use it. I think Xan should take it from here..."

"Thanks, Dreamer." Xan said. He then turned to Kai. "I... don't know much about my past, my parents. My earliest memories date back to when I was at the Abbey. I already posessed Dreamer, and the taint on Dreamer slowly spread to control me as well."

"But I never remembered seeing you."

"Voltaire didn't let me mix with you people. I was much closer to Voltaire than any of you, almost like his right hand man. I would do his bidding, serving him as he wished. But I was always considered to be weaker than all of you. Voltaire never treated me with the same respect as he did to all of you... not that he treated any of us with much respect in the first place, of course. But he seemed harsher to me than anyone else. He was always punishing me for my poor skills and weaknesses, and I accepted it all silently. Until now. Voltaire realised the threat you and your friends were posing to his intentions. As such, he sent me to destroy all of you."

"Why us?"

"Dreamer, you never told me. Why?"

"Both angel and devil lore concur than there are four beasts of Apocalypse: Dragoon, Dranzer, Driger and Draciel. In times of peril, these beasts would arrive and choose their warriors, and both warrior and beast would fight alongside each other to restore the balance of good and evil. In the beginning, Volten had tried to control you by creating Black Dranzer. That plan backfired when you destroyed the Abbey. Volten sent you away because he needed you to learn to use Black Dranzer, such that he could control you without risking major injuries. He never realised how far you had progressed with Dranzer and the existence of the other warriors until the Russian Championships. Volten tried to regain control of you by offering you Black Dranzer again, such that you would capture the other beasts of Apocalypse and remove the threat. That plan nearly succeeded, but you returned to your friends. Then, he came up with this plan."

"And now..."

"Rei and Max are both injured. Tyson is way out of control of his emotions. Only you remain to thwart Voltaire's plans, that is why we need you."

Suddenly, the arm of Volten jerked downwards. Almost instantly, Xan winced from the injury in his chest.

"Xan, the warp is weakening," Dreamer reported.

"Never mind. Kai already knows what he needs to know. Conserve your energy."

"Very well."

Suddenly, Kai's surroundings sprung to life. Xan collapsed into Kai's arms, obviously dying from his injury.

"Kai... fight with Dreamer to eliminate Volten."

"I will."

"Then I can die in peace. You were always the better blader... brother."

Xan's eyes closed and his body went limp as Kai went numb in shock. Brother? Why didn't he tell him earlier... Of course, everything seemed so logical now. It explained all those similarities between the two of them. It helped to explain why Rei would fall for Xan if he loved Kai so much. It was so obvious all along... yet Kai didn't realise anything. Kai repeatedly blamed himself mentally, but he knew this wasn't the time. It was the time to get even. Thoughts of vengeance and hatred filled his mind as he gently laid Xan's body on the ground. Looking up, he saw Voltaire - or was it Volten? - smirking at him. Kai glared back with cold fury.

"You will pay, Volten."

Kai turned around and nodded at Dreamer. Nodding back, Dreamer started charging at Kai's body...

Boris: Great.

Trueangel: Oh yes, you're fired.

Boris: Why?

Trueangel: I got someone else to do the disclaimers.

Boris. Oh, fine. *leaves*

Trueangel: Introducing the new disclaimer guy... Xan!

Xan: Iughtught I was dead?

Trueangel: Oh. "raises Xan from dead*

Xan: Yay!

Trueangel: Do the disclaimers well and I won't have to send you back.

Xan: Of course. *shudder*
