SoulSister: Heh, I planned this right from the start... and I'm glad I pulled it off so well.
LoneWolfStar7: Oh, so there's a hikari involved... I guess that makes things different.
Platinum Rei: Oh, don't worry, I won't blow up so soon. I still got a sequel to this fic planned. After that, I can read all my reviews in one shot and TAKE THE WORLD DOWN WITH ME! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!
WeirdGuy13: If you were wondering, it's 'coincidences'. And don't worry, I'll get rid of Volten by the end of this story. Though he will come back, somehow, so that I can have another story...
fuckin peace of bread: Is this a flame? Ooh, I finally get a flame... Anyway, I'm not a fluff writer. I'm a kink-&-angst writer... go read stories that scream 'FLUFFY GOODNESS!!!' if you are looking for fluff.
Rumi-chan: Erm, remember to leave Volten barely alive, I still need him (to be Kai's punching bag). Hey, more PLUSHIES!!! *adds to plushie collection* Here, have a Volten plushie (complete with easily ripped joints and dissection knife). Oh, if you were wondering about where I went, look at the end of chapter 6 (the chronicle).
Blue Winged Angel: Ah, Max. I'll leave him alone for now, but he'll be back at the end of this story and in the aforementioned sequel. As for Crystallis... well, continue reading to find out!
~~~
Trueangel: I thought you people needed a break from last chapter, so this chapter's a Chronicle.
Xan: Am I gonna appear yet?
Trueangel: No, but still, get back to the fic... *pushes Xan back into fic*
Rei: Well, since this chapter doesn't concern us, then me and Kai can...
Kenny: *uses De-hentai-ist to smash Rei's head* Heh.
Trueangel: Thanks Chief. Now, forget what I said about all the Chronicles being from Dreamer's POV... I decided. There will be 3 Chronicles. The first one, a few chapters back, was from Dreamer's POV. The second one, this one, is from Titus' POV. And the last one will be from Volten's POV.
Kenny: Hmm, I wonder what the mind of a megalomaniac is like...
Rei: *stands up looking like a zombie* Kai, I need you...
Kenny: *uses De-hentai-ist to splash water on Rei* Heh heh.
Rei: Kai, I need you to get me out of this mess! Stop it, Chief!
Kai: I'm coming!
Kenny: Don't worry, I'll handle Kai. PERISH, EVIL HENTAI SUGGESTIONS!!!
Trueangel: Well, to the fic...
Chronicles 2 The Betrayal of Love
My name is Titus. I am a devil from hell, literally. I'm like a mercenary, lending my services, be it fighting or otherwise, for gold. But this story concerns the time when I was hired by a certain devil... a devil named Volten. Volten not only promised me gold, he also promised me fame and power if I helped him succeed in his task, whatever it was. I readily agreed; which mercenary wouldn't? But soon, I came to realise how wrong I was...
This story begins not long after I was hired by Volten. So far, I had only been instructed to kill a few angels here and thenobonobody important. I still didn't know what he had in mind, but whatever it was, he was keeping it secret. But I would soon find out. Volten had personally made a trip to Heaven. He had instructed me to wait outside the Lesser Hall for him. Well, there I was, waiting for almost an hour, but he hadn't arrived yet.
Perhaps a little background of the devil world would be appropriate here. Hell is ruled by an overlord, whose identity remains secret. He is only known as the Devil High Priesssisssisting him is the High Council comprising of seven devils who are specialists in certain areas, such as magic or armed combat. The High Council meets every 49 days in the Great Hall. Each member in the High Council leads one of 7 lesser councils: the Council of Mages, Council of Fighters, Council of War, Council of Trade, Council of Technology, Council of Prophets and Council of Spies. Every week, a different council would meet in the Lesser Hall, and it would rotate, meaning that if the Council of Mages convened today, they would next meet 7 weeks later.
Then there are the clans. Legend has that the first Devil High Priest created Hell, and he had 49 children, each starting their own clan to populate Hell. The leaders of each clan would meet in the Stone Hall every 49 days, and the meeting was presided over by one of the members of the High Council. The clan leaders, along with the people he decides to allow to assist him, are in charge of the smaller matters for their clan, such as education.
I belong to the Gwzri clan. Our clan members are ious ous for their stealth and sneakiness. As a result, many of our clan members end up as spies, assassins, or something similar. Volten, on the other hand, is from the Bhlryn clan. The Bhlryni are infamous for their crafty slyness and ruthless cunning. They are capable of betraying even their closest friends to achieve their ends. Now, as I look back, I realise I shouldn't have trusted Volten on anything, anything at all. But then again, I was young and ignorant then.
Finally, I saw Volten flying towards me, almost panting, but still able to mantain a calm composure.
"Has the council convened yet?"
He was referring to the Council of Spies. They were due to meet today.
"No, but I've seen a lot of them around. They'll be meeting anytime soon."
I knew who they were, because, as I said, most of the Gwzri clan were spies and the like. And the bond between members of a clan is VERY strong.
"Well, we should be getting ready, then."
"You mean you're going to meet the Council of Spies?"
"Yes. I have something to report to them."
"About what?"
"About the mission I've been workiong on. You'll find out soon enough."
The giant bell above the Hall rang, signalling that the meeting was about to begin. Devils started moving into the Hall, and we followed along. Soon, Insidion, head of the Council of Spies, noticed Volten and ushered us into a room.
"Ah, Volten... how is the progress on the mission so far?"
"I must say it's moving along pretty well," replied Volten, grinning.
"Well, there must have been a remarkable breakthrough for you to be smiling like this."
"You'll find out soon enough."
"Very well. And this young devil is...?"
Insidion walked over to me.
"My name is Titus. Pleased to meet you."
"He's my... associate," Volten explained.
Just then, the bell above the Hall rang again.
"The meeting has begun... I need to go now. Just wait a while, I'll call for you in a second."
Saying that, Insidion hurried out of the room. After a while, I spoke again.
"I've never been to a meeting like this before."
I didn't say that to show fear or anything. It was just a simple statement, a fact.
"Well, watch and learn. If you prove yourself worthy, you'll be attending many more of these meetings."
I watched as Insidion stepped up to a podium in the middle of the hall. Using magic to amplify his voice, he started speaking.
"Members of the Council of Spies, today we convene for another Council meeting. First on our agenda is..."
I listened as the Council went through a list of matters on their agenda: Spy Training Program, spies' report on suspicious activity in the southeast Netha sector, and other things of concern to Hell's spies. Finally, it came to our - or rather, Volten's turn.
"Next, we have a report from volten on the progress of the Infiltration Mission," Insidion announced.
"This is it. Stay cool," Volten said, before using a spell to amplify his voice.
Volten walked calmly up to the podium,and I followed just behind. Soon, I understood the meaning of his words. From the holding area, I had counted only 35 members of the council, but now it seemed as though there were millions and billions of them, ready to lunge at our necks.
"Members of the Council, I am proud to announce that there has been remarkable progress in this mission. A recent turn of events could prove to be the crucial point on this mission."
A murmur spread throughout the members, and I could understand why. In all the time I had worked for Volten, I learnt enough of his character to know that he never spoke with such confidence unless he was nearly 100% sure. Just like many people were overconfident, Volten was underconfident.
"During the last few days, I had travelled into Heaven. And there, I had gained the trust of an angel. And not just any angel - this angel I speak of is one of the guards of Crystallis."
The noise from the Council grew louder at this revelation. Meanwhile, I was stunned by surprise, almost shocked, as I figured out the nature of Volten's task. He was supposed to steal Crystallis from the angels. To the rest of us, Crystallis was just a rumored powerful weapon developed by the angels against devils, but it wouldn't be surprising that the angels already knew exactly what Crystallis was. And if they had to send someone to retrieve Crystallis... well, that meant either Crystallis was so temptingly powerful they had to get their hands on it, or that Crystallis indeed posed a grave threat to devils.
"That is all I have to report for now."
Volten turned to leave the Hall, and I swiftly followed. Soon, we were flying back to Volten's house, where I also stayed for now as a bodyguard. After thinking over it for a while, I finally decided to talk to Volten about what he had revealed during the COuncil meeting.
"Um... Volten?"
"What is it?"
"Are you... really going after Crystallis?"
"You heard it during the meeting."
"But it's gonna be difficult, what with the heavy security and all..."
"The angel I met, remember?"
There was a period of silence while we walked, until I finally decided to bring up something else I had noticed.
"This angel... I can feel he's more than just a tool in this mission."
Volten was silent for a while, before he spoke again.
"Well, I guess I can tell you. This angel... I can tell he's absolutely in love with me. And... I'm also starting to look at him as a friend. He doesn't treat me differently just because I'm a devil. He looks at me for who I am."
"But then... the mission..."
"I know. That's why I'm still kinda worried... but I'll find some way. Even if it's the last thing I do."
Over the next three months, Volten made many more trips to Heaven, probably to meet this angel of his. His name was Dreamer. And I could tell Volten was feeling more and more for this Dreamer with each passing day. I decided I had to meet this Dreamer, to see what kind of person he was to have captivated Volten like that. But never once did I question Volten. I trusted him.
Over the three months, my desire to meet Dreamer grew stronger and stronger, to the point where I was prepared to ask Volten to let me follow on his next trip just so I could meet Dreamer. But it never happened.
"Dreamer's coming to Hell," said Volten.
"What?! Volten, are you sure?"
"Yeah, it's all planned. He's coming next week. He has even applied for leave and everything."
"But still, angels don't come to Hell often, I'm afraid..."
"That Dreamer's gonna get mugged or something? Don't worry, I'll be with him whenever he's outdoors, so he'll be safe."
I could sense that Volten was really concerned about Dreamer, but whether it was because Dreamer was his path to success, or because he truly loved Dreamer, I couldn't tell.
"Well, it seems you've already planned everything."
"Yes. There's no need to worry, Titus. Nothing will happen."
"I hope so, Volten. I hope so."
One week came and gone, and soon the day that Dreamer was coming arrived. I waited at the portal linking Heaven and Hell, while Volten went through to fetch Dreamer. There were a few other angels coming through the gate as well, probably merchants. The feud between angels and devils had lasted as long as anyone could remember, and the fact that most of the angels in Hell were rich traders made them all the more targets of devil thieves and their ilk.
Finally, Volten and Dreamer reappeared in Hell. This was my first meeting with Dreamer, and instantly I realised why Volten was so mesmerised by this angel. Dreamer was absolutely gorgeous, to say the least. He exuded an air of childlike innocence. Not forgetting my manners, I walked up to him and extended a paw.
"Hi,Dreamer. I'm Titus, Volten's... umm..."
"I've already told Dreamer about you," said Volten.
Dreamer shook my paw, smiling a smile that could melt even the coldest heart.
"Pleased to meet you, Titus."
"Well then, shall we go?" asked Volten.
"Sure," replied Dreamer.
"Hop on," said Volten.
"Volten, how many times do I have to tell you that my wings are fully healed?"
"I know, but you do like riding me, don't you?"
"Yeah, but-"
"Really, there's no need to be afraid or anything. Come on, let's go get dinner."
"Oh well... fine."
Dreamer climbed onto Volten's back, and he flew off. I quickly followed. Dreamer had arrived in the evening, so for that day Dreamer just ate dinner (prepared by Volten, that devil can actually cook), unpacked, and went to sleep. The next day, Volten took Dreamer on a tour of Hell. I saw that Volten was happier than he had ever been while he was with Dreamer. Perhaps Dreamer had affected him after all... But at the same time, I could tell that he was pretty worried. I couldn't blame him for that. Insidion might have been a friendly fellow, but he was extremely strict when it came to work. If Volten failed his mission, who knew what might happen to him. But still, I trusted Volten to find a way out, and he did in the end. However, his solution would come as a shock that evening, after dinner. Dreamer had retired to his room to rest, and Volten and I were left alone.
"Good news, Titus. I've found out a way to find Crystallis without losing Dreamer."
"How."
"The tainting ceremony."
"WHAT?!"
"It's perfect. By gaining control over Dreamer, I can find out how to get Crystallis, and at the same time not hurt Dreamer's feelings. Moreover, the end of this week will be perfect for it, since the three moons will be in alignment.""
The tainting ceremony was an ancient ceremony that dated back to even before the feud between the angels and devils started, back from when angels and devils were supposed to be together. It gave the devil complete control over his angel partner. However, one of the conditions for the ceremony to be successful was that both parties had to be willing, he dhe devils couldn't abuse it.
"But you'll be betraying Dreamer's love! He agrees to this thinking that it is the ultimate symbol of love, but you abuse it to steal Crystallis..."
"Dreamer won't know."
"But can your conscience and your feelings for Dreamer bear this guilt?"
"I..."
I sighed.
"Forget it. It's your call, do what you think is right. I won't interfere."
Saying that, I walked out of the room. However, I hadn't totally left Volten yet. The week quickly came to an end, and the day that the moons were in alignment came. My curiosity got the better of me, and I just had to find out what Volten chose in the end. That night, I delibrately walked past Volten's room. As I approached it, I could hear voices from inside.
"Oh, Volten... please don't stop..."
"I... love you, Drr." r."
"I love you too... OOH! VOLTEN!"
I closed my eyes and shook my head. Volten had committed it... the betrayal of love... Dreamer's love for him. If his feelings for Dreamer only amounted to that much... then there was no point working for him anymore. Sooner or later he would betray me as well. I headed back to my room to pack my belongings.
"It's perfect. By gaining control over Dreamer, I can find out how to get Crystallis, and at the same time not hurt Dreamer's feelings. Moreover, the end of this week will be perfect for it, since the three moons will be in alignment.""
The tainting ceremony was an ancient ceremony that dated back to even before the feud between the angels and devils started, back from when angels and devils were supposed to be together. It gave the devil complete control over his angel partner. However, one of the conditions for the ceremony to be successful was that both parties had to be willing, he dhe devils couldn't abuse it.
"But you'll be betraying Dreamer's love! He agrees to this thinking that it is the ultimate symbol of love, but you abuse it to steal Crystallis..."
"Dreamer won't know."
"But can your conscience and your feelings for Dreamer bear this guilt?"
"I..."
I sighed.
"Forget it. It's your call, do what you think is right. I won't interfere."
Saying that, I walked out of the room. However, I hadn't totally left Volten yet. The week quickly came to an end, and the day that the moons were in alignment came. My curiosity got the better of me, and I just had to find out what Volten chose in the end. That night, I delibrately walked past Volten's room. As I approached it, I could hear voices from inside.
"Oh, Volten... please don't stop..."
"I... love you, Drr." r."
"I love you too... OOH! VOLTEN!"
I closed my eyes and shook my head. Volten had committed it... the betrayal of love... Dreamer's love for him. If his feelings for Dreamer only amounted to that much... then there was no point working for him anymore. Sooner or later he would betray me as well. I headed back to my room to pack my belongings.
Trueangel: Ooh, how was it? Sorry, no explicit yaoi though... my imagination doesn't stretch *that* far.
Xan: For all the cleaner fans out there, thank god.
Trueangel: What are you doing here?! GET BACK INTO THE FIC!!! *shove Xan into fic*
Kenny: You know, you shouldn't be so hard on him...after all, he is getting impatient since he hasn't appeared for so long.
Trueangel: He'll definitely be in the last Chronicle, I promise!
Kenny: Who knows when that'll be...
Trueangel: Not long, this fic is scheduled to end this year. Well, until next time... review!
