Krillin, Launch, Tien, Yamcha, and Piccolo crept closer to the space ship in the hazy glow of pre-dawn. They had expected to be met by silence and a guard or two. Instead they found a bustle of activity as equipment was moved out of the craft and prepared for use in a brightly lit area some 50 yards away.
“Great,” sighed Krillin. “Well, guys, what do we do now?”
“We go as planned,” Piccolo’s gravely voice answered from the murkiness. “I’ll make sure you have your distraction. You just make sure you’re ready to move. We won’t get a second shot at this.”
With near silent grunts of acknowledgement, the team separated in preparation for their rescue attempt.
Launch moved to where she could keep the busy crewmen covered and still remain available as backup for the three who would enter the ship.
Piccolo hovered high above the ship; waiting to provide the distraction and give the signal that would start the operation once everyone was in position.
Because of their concealed approach to the ship’s entrance, the three who would enter did not see Vegeta emerge from the ship’s interior, but they felt his Ki as soon as the entrance hatch slid open.
The team froze as they waited to see what Vegeta would do. Was this his own escape attempt? As peace continued uninterrupted in the area, Piccolo signaled for the trio to resume their advance.
Reaching their planned position, all eyes turned to Piccolo, awaiting his signal. They watched as Piccolo nodded once toward Vegeta, then turned his gaze back to the team as they waited to enter the ship. Giving the signal that the distraction was about to begin, Tien, Krillin, and Yamcha inched closer to the ship.
They felt Vegeta’s power level begin to rise, apparently under the direction of the woman who continuously walked between the various pieces of equipment, eagerly examining the presented information.
With every crewman’s eye locked on either Vegeta’s glowing form or the computer display before them, the rescuers easily slipped unseen into the ship.

Rapidly moving deeper into the ship, only disappointingly faint traces of Bulma and Trunk’s energy signatures could be identified. There was just enough to confirm that the missing pair were indeed somewhere in the ship before Vegeta’s overwhelming power obscured all Ki in the area. The rescuers were even forced to power up slightly in order to shield themselves from the emissions reverberating through the ship. Any hope of tracing the pair by their Ki were put on hold.
Yamcha exchanged glances with his companions. Until Vegeta lowered his power again, theirs would have to be a physical search in hostile territory.

Vaner scooped up the baby immediately when the shaking began. He knew the initial trials with the Saiyan were to begin this morning – everyone did – but the ship was shielded! What could have gone wrong to cause this kind of heavy vibration? The worried crewman stumbled into the corridor clutching Trunks to his chest as the baby wailed his distress and the pressure continued to increase.
When the painful event finally ended, the pair remained where they had collapsed huddled against the wall. Vaner gently stroked the baby’s back, trying to soothe the crying child.
As the numbing silence lengthened, Vaner forced himself up and slowly made his way toward the control room. After moving only a short distance, Vaner froze as he caught sight of movement down an intersecting corridor. Approaching him at a trot were three grim-faced strangers. Perhaps they were responsible for whatever had just occurred? Either way, they were intruders on the ship and the alarm had to be raised immediately.
“There he is!” “There’s Trunks!” The half-shouted cries of the strangers caused Vaner to hesitate in his escape attempt long enough for the dark haired warrior to tackle him around his knees. The sudden impact nearly resulted in the baby being catapulted from his guardian’s arms. As Vaner curled his body protectively around the startled infant, he found himself surrounded by the angry trio.
“Give us the child and you won’t be harmed…” began the three-eyed giant.
The very instinct that made Vaner the perfect custodian for little Trunks came hand-in-hand with the instinctive need to protect his young charge. He exploded at the men who faced him.
“‘I’ won’t get hurt?! You Morons!! Did you see what your friend nearly did to Trunks just now?! Who the hell are you and what business do you have with Trunks?!” shouted the furious crewman as he held the infant tightly to his chest.
Krillin caught Yamcha by the arm, stopping him from attempting to forcefully remove Vaner’s arms from around the child. Walking closer to Vaner, Krillin spoke softly as Tien watched the corridors around them.
“We are friends of Bulma and Trunks. We’ve come to get them out of here.”
Vaner looked down at Trunks as Krillin quickly introduced the trio. If this was done right, Trunks would be safe from the threat of the lab – at least for the time being – and the Commander would have no reason to punish him…
“The female, Bulma, is on the level below this one.” He whispered pointing down one corridor, “But you’ll have to hurry. I don’t know what you did before or how you got in here, but it won’t stop the Commander from coming after you. As soon as you are seen, the ship will be sealed – with all of you still in it.”
Vaner stood and reluctantly handed Trunks to Krillin. “My quarters are down this way. If you knock me out and ‘hide’ me in there, it will add to the time before anyone notices Trunks is missing and there won’t be any reason to question why I failed to sound the alarm…”
Vaner looked at the trio hopefully as they prepared to resume their search for Bulma.
Time was short and only getting shorter, but Vaner had betrayed his ship and undoubtedly put his own life in danger to aide them in their search. Tien stepped forward. “Let’s do this fast then… and thank you,” he added with a brief nod of his head.

Between tracking Bulma's weak Ki and following Vaner’s directions – Yamcha, Krillin and Tien were able to close rapidly on Bulma’s location, increasing their chances of success and escape. Reaching the door that kept Bulma prisoner, Yamcha made quick work of the lock. Suddenly he found himself dodging flying shards of broken dishes as the door slid open.
Bulma didn’t care whether the character coming through the door was Vegeta, Brietoth, or some lackey crewman. She had been pushed too far by this latest assault upon her senses. She was pissed and determined to let the entire ship know it! Grabbing handfuls of broken dishes, Bulma began her aerial attack as soon as the door opened the first few inches.
“Bulma – Hey babe!! Take it easy!” squawked Yamcha as he dodged the shards.
“Geeze Bulma!” chuckled Krillin. “And here I thought you’d be glad to see us…”
“Oh! Guys – TRUNKS!!!” cried Bulma as she leapt recklessly across the glass-strewn floor, into the arms of her friends. Yamcha caught her, swinging her clear of the shattered remains of her misguided missiles before setting her down. She reached out, eagerly taking her baby from Krillen.
“Time to move,” murmured Tien. “Vegeta’s exhibition won’t keep them busy forever.”
“Vegeta? Where is he? How did you get him free from the implant controls?” Bulma asked frantically as she held Trunks tightly to her chest.
“Come on Bulma, we’ll get everything figured out once we’re outta here,” whispered Yamcha as he attempted to guide Bulma towards freedom. “Besides, Vegeta is plenty strong enough to take care of himself.”
“No! You don’t understand and I’m not leaving Vegeta here under that monster’s control!” Bulma’s tone held cold steel as she handed Trunks back to Krillin. “Take Trunks somewhere safe – Go Now! I have to find some way to help Vegeta. I need more information about the implants that bitch Brietoth put inside Vegeta."
The trio had no idea what implants Bulma was talking about, but they all recognized the determination in her voice. Short of knocking her unconscious, there was no way Bulma was leaving with them.
While Yamcha argued for Bulma’s safety, Tien’s thoughts were focused on the awesome power of Vegeta. And what it would mean if it were again harnessed as a tool of evil and, once more, set upon the universe. As much as Tien abhorred Vegeta, he could not simply abandon him and allow that to happen. Tien offered a compromise.
“Yamcha, Krillin – get the child to Goku and stay there. I’ll stick with Bulma and see what information she can gather before we also leave.”
Despite their reservations, Krillin and Yamcha soon took Trunks silently in one direction while Bulma and Tien went in another.
The ship was in no way a sleeping vessel – Vegeta’s demonstration and time itself guaranteed that – but the shaken crewmen who had witnessed the event were still quite involved with assisting companions who needed medical attention or dealing with equipment that had faired only slightly better than their attendants.
Only fifteen minutes after the rescuing team first entered the ship, Yamcha, Krillin, and Trunks escaped the enemy spacecraft.

As they crept along the corridors, Bulma filled Tien in on the basics of what had happen to her since she was taken. She also shared as much information as she had regarding the implants and their ability to control Vegeta’s actions but - at least for now - not his mind.
Nothing he heard raised any sympathy for the killer who currently hid on Chikyuu. It only increased his determination to see that Vegeta’s evil power be kept from the hands of this Brietoth creature.
Bulma had hoped to find a lab where she might locate additional implants or perhaps their component parts. What they found instead appeared to be some kind of observation room filled with computers and dozens of view screens. Most of the enormous screens that lined the walls were darkened, but the one active wall screen displayed a silent scene that wrung a cry from Bulma. The live image was that of Vegeta attached to some kind of stand, his face and body contorted in agony.
Tien secured the door behind them and then his calm voice drew Bulma’s eyes away from the action on the screen and to the panels before her. The readouts and displays on the smaller monitors seemed to be directly connected to what was occurring on the larger screen above.
With Bulma’s mind focused on understanding the function of this equipment and how it related to Vegeta’s implants, Tien was left to observe the screen above. No one – not even Vegeta – should be left to that kind of torture. He forced himself to study Vegeta’s captors. The woman that Bulma had identified as Brietoth - the same he’d seen earlier with Vegeta - and a short man in a doctor’s coat appeared to be the ones controlling the situation.
The man was facing the camera as he spoke to the woman while she checked the attachment of various wires on Vegeta’s body. Lip reading was one of many skills Tien had been trained to use for his previous occupation, and it was one that still came in handy. The words that were said were about the last thing he had expected.
The man was speaking. ~”How much longer will we need to keep that woman hostage? I don’t like her attitude.”~ The man appeared to listen to the woman’s response, then replied to her. ~”I simply find it amazing that such a powerful creature as this would give himself up simply upon the threat to one such as her.”~
As the conversation turned to technical details, the computer room was suddenly filled with sound. Bulma quickly lowered the volume and both observers heard the woman announce that that was enough for the first session. Bulma watched silently as Vegeta was released and he made his way slowly to a cot where he collapsed.
The woman spoke to her companion as they observed Vegeta’s still form. “Adjust the parameters for the next session, Amberge. Apparently, we aren’t pushing him hard enough, he can still walk…”
“Bulma, we have to leave now,” Tien said quietly. “Once you are safe, Vegeta will be able to free himself. And if he can’t… We will be able to come back for him without concern for the safety of you and Trunks.”
“But you see what she’d doing to him! Tien, I can’t…”
“Bulma, you must. It’s the only way he’ll have any chance at all.”
As Bulma gathered what she could, Tien watched as Vegeta was returned to the rack for another session of torture. With her shirt weighed down with what she hoped could be used to aid Vegeta, Bulma and Tien began their escape from the ship.
Nearly 45 minutes after the rescuer’s original entry, the ship’s crew had fully recovered from Vegeta’s early morning display and had returned to their normal routines. Two strangers moving through the ship did not go unnoticed for long.
As they cautiously moved closer to the exit, the first cries of warning were heard. Tien grabbed Bulma and throwing stealth aside, shot toward freedom. Any crewman who got in the way of the speeding giant did not live long enough to realize their foolishness.
Alarms sprang to life throughout the ship, joined almost immediately by explosions and shouts from outside as the few crewmen on guard were taken out by Piccolo and Launch. Blowing the quickly closing entry hatch into a cloud of shrapnel, Tien and Bulma left the ship, ending their mission. Piccolo swooped down over Launch, and in moments, all were headed for Goku’s mountain home and a reunion of friends.
But without Vegeta.
