CHPATER 9
CHAPTER 9
Zechs dropped off the limo and picked up his own car. He drove home in silence, thinking. What was he going to tell Treize? He decided to just tell Treize the truth. He was flattered that Treize liked him but he wasn’t interested in him like that. He wouldn’t tell Treize about Trowa unless Treize asked.
Zechs decided to wait until the morning to contact Treize so he could think about what he was going to say. He knew he had to phrase it right, because Treize didn’t take no very well. ‘Hopefully the fact that he has told me and abased himself for me means he won’t take this as bad.’ Zechs thought. He went to bed thinking about how he could break the news to Treize.
The next morning Zechs went straight to his communication center and contacted Treize. When Treize appeared in front of him Zechs launched into his speech. “Sir? I have given much thought to what you told me and I know that we have been friends forever but I don’t feel any more than a strong respect for you. I love you in a brotherly way but I’m afraid I could never think of you in a romantic way. I have too much respect for you.” Zechs bowed his head. “I’m sorry.”
Treize smiled wistfully. “That’s what I had to chance when I told you how I felt. It’s not your fault.” Treize looked up at Zechs. “It’s someone else, isn’t it?”
Zechs nodded slowly, trying to gauge Treize’s mood. “It’s the brunette I was with in the club.”
Treize raised an eyebrow. “That common young man? I thought I told you that they will only bring trouble to you.”
“I know you said that Sir, but I love him and there’s nothing that anyone can say to get me to separate with him.” Zechs said, surprising himself with his level of emotion for Trowa.
Treize looked surprised. “Separate with him? You and him? You’re together already? I got the impression that you had just met.”
Zechs nodded. “We had. But I came to realize that when I first saw him that it was love at first sight. I just didn’t know if he felt that way too. I found out last night.”
Treize just smiled bitterly. “Trust an ordinary boy to come between me and those closest to me.”
“I still think of you as the brother I never had sir. But, well...I think Trowa is something special.”
Treize felt a little betrayed, he had finally admitted his love to someone he thought he could trust and got burned for his trouble. “So Trowa is the name of the brat that stole you from me? Want to tell me anything else about him? Go ahead, don’t spare my feelings. Was he a good fuck? I’m sure that he’s already lured you into sharing his bed. That’s all he wants anyway, I’m sure. That and your money. I can’t believe you would do this to me, to your honor. I don’t want to talk to you any more, Goodbye Zechs.”
Zechs stared in shock at the blank screen. That went even worse than he could ever have pictured. He was shocked by the sudden change in Treize’s attitude. He had thought Treize might be upset, but he hadn’t expected this. Zechs wanted to cry, he hated disappointing Treize. He slowly climbed the stairs to his room and locked himself inside. He came down that evening and started to call Trowa but then decided Trowa wouldn’t want to listen to him complain.
Just then the phone rang. It was Trowa. ‘It’s almost as if he could tell I needed to talk to him.’ Zechs thought. Then laughed at his folly. No Trowa probably just called to talk to him.
“Hello?” Zechs said straining to keep the hurt out of his voice.
“Hi Zechs.” Trowa said, then “Are you okay?”
“I could be better.” Zechs answered. ‘So much for keeping the hurt out of my voice.’ He thought. Out loud he said “I just had a fight with Treize.” Then before he knew what he was doing the story just spilled out. When he was done talking Zechs just lapsed into silence. Trowa didn’t say anything for a moment and Zechs was worried that he had bored Trowa with his problems. “Trowa?” he asked tentatively.
“Hmm.” He answered. “I’m thinking.”
Zechs let him think in silence. “I don’t know what to say. I think he just felt betrayed and jealous because you had always been close and now you’re growing apart. But he did sound really angry. Maybe he’s right. I didn’t realize who you were at first, now though, maybe he is right, I’ve got nothing, no money, no land, nothing.”
Zechs sighed. ”I don’t care about that Trowa. I wouldn’t care if you were homeless.” He leaned forward in his chair. “I like you because you are a bright young man and the sight of you leaves me breathless.”
Trowa blushed on his side of the phone. “Thank you.” He whispered.
“No problem.” He answered. They chatted for a few more minutes before Trowa said he had to go. “I’m looking for a job.” He explained.
“Why?” asked Zechs.
“Because I’m going to have to start paying rent to live in Wufei’s house and to do that I need a job.”
Zechs thought for a minute. “You could come live with me.” He suggested.
Trowa blanched. Trowa was still afraid that Zechs would suddenly show his evil side and he didn’t want to be living alone with Zechs until he was absolutely sure that he could trust him. “I don’t think so Zechs, but thanks for the offer.”
Zechs inwardly cursed himself. He knew that Trowa was sensitive and hiding an emotional scar and he knew he had to take it slow, but the question had jumped out of his mouth before he knew what he was saying. “Anytime.” He said.
“Well I have to go Zechs. I’ll see you later, ok?”
“All right. Goodbye and I’ll see you later.”
“Goodbye.” Trowa said then hung up the phone. He hated himself for being this uneasy but couldn’t shake the feeling that if he let his guard down again he might be hurt again. Zechs hadn’t done anything to suggest that he was anything but the perfect gentleman but then again neither had Quatre. Quatre... Trowa wondered where he was now and what he was doing.
Zechs dropped off the limo and picked up his own car. He drove home in silence, thinking. What was he going to tell Treize? He decided to just tell Treize the truth.
