Death and His Pilot
Chapter Nine
Calm
The city streets were smooth under Heero’s bare feet, and he found himself staring at it them quite a bit as it seemed that the entire city’s population had turned out to greet the two brothers, and to stare at him, whispering.
“What are they saying?” he asked, a little nervous about the way some of them were looking him over.
“You really don’t want to know, love,” Shinigami said. “Let’s just say that they’re… speculating on the events that will occur on our wedding night.”
“And whether or not you’ll fit,” Yami whispered to his brother. Barely catching the comment, Heero flushed bright red, stepping closer to his ‘betrothed,’ all the while holding the flaps of his clothes down as the wind threatened to lift them.
There was a shout and people quickly made a wide path for the figure of a child running at full speed in their direction. Heero barely had time to take in a white pair of mismatched wings and pale green hair before Shinigami had been tackled by the girl, who immediately started to babble happily in Tongues. While much shorter than Shinigami, the winged girl was still a foot taller than Heero, who stepped away as far as the link would allow him to without discomfort.
‘Hikari, at least allow your uncle to sit down and rest from his trip before you start demanding his attention,’ a woman’s voice chided, drawing their attention. She stood between them and the setting sun, every inch as elegant and poised as she had been in the painting and more. Tenshi’s wings were spread out on either side of her, blocking some of the light until she folded them, approaching the group of four, arms spread to welcome her younger brothers. ‘Shinigami, Yami, it has been far too long since I’ve seen you and little brother, what is this I hear about a bride?’
The violet-eyed man grinned proudly. ‘You heard truly, sister. May I present Heero, my bonded-to-be.’
She knelt down to be eye level with the human, peering into his face. If Heero found the mat gold eyes startling, he gave no sign as he met the gaze full on. ‘Are you sure that it’s ‘to-be’, little brother? I can already feel part of a bond between you.’
‘It’s a long story, sister, one that I’d prefer to tell once we’ve gotten comfortable,’ Shinigami said, laying a hand on Heero’s shoulder. “Heero, I’m going to carry you the rest of the way. The temple is pretty high up, and I doubt you want to take the two thousand steps to the gate.”
With a sigh, Heero nodded and was once again lifted into Shinigami’s arms as the four immortals spread their wings and lifted from the ground to the awed whispers of the villagers.
A shadow seemed to be waiting for them at the gates until they were close enough for Heero to make out the features of the last of the five, demonic wings framing an otherwise angelic man, in who’s arms Hikari made her landing.
‘Youkai!’ Shinigami called out cheerfully, landing in front of the man. The two gripped hands, their forearms touching briefly in fond greeting. ‘How have you been faring, here among the mortals? Found any new species to study lately?’
Youkai laughed. ‘I do have other things that I do with my time, Shinigami. Now I do believe the question should be who have you been getting into trouble with, and how long do you think they’ll hold a grudge against you for not getting caught again.’
‘The Nire clan, and ten generations,’ Yami supplied, smirking. ‘He just returned from the mission two days ago, shortly after our little oddity appeared in the hallways. They haven’t been separated since our brother’s return.’
‘It hurts Heero when I move too far away,’ Shinigami explained, adjusting his hold on the human boy, who was quickly growing sick of being unable to understand a word of their conversation, especially since he’d heard his name being mentioned. ‘And that’s one of the reasons we came so early before our next mission. I need to ask you and our sister about your bonding.’
‘He’s serious,’ Tenshi said at her mate’s raised eyebrow. ‘He’s already known as Shinigami’s bride down in the village.’
‘And the universe trembles in fear at the thought of any offspring you may create,’ Youkai said with a laugh, leading them through the silken curtains that served as a door. ‘I look foreword to hearing the story behind this.’
‘I think you’ll have to ask Heero to get the majority of it,’ Shinigami sighed. Setting Heero down, he flopped down onto one of the piles of cushions arranged around the room, and arm extended. Rolling his eyes, Heero followed the assassin down, pulling the arm around him like a safety bar. ‘Unfortunately, he doesn’t speak a word of Tongues, so you’ll have to wait until Yami or I can teach you his language.’
‘He doesn’t speak-’ Youkai paused, dark eyes widening briefly. Wings fluttering in excitement, he strode across the room and knelt down to stare directly into Heero’s face. More than a little unnerved by the utter blackness of the two orbs, Heero scooted back further into Shinigami’s arms. Chuckling, the white-haired man ruffled the mortal’s hair before standing and allowing his bonded to lead him to another pile of cushions. ‘Don’t worry; I won’t tie him to a table to dissect him or even try to study him. Tenshi made me sleep on the steps last time I did that to one of the things Hikari brought home. However, I am allowed to interrogate you until I can grill him.’
Shaking her head, Tenshi reached back to jab him between the wings. ‘So, where’d you meet?’
‘Couple of trainees found him unconscious in the lower level hallway,’ Yami said, pulling his niece into his lap and playing with her hair. ‘They brought him to my office and I brought him with me to greet our brother when he returned from his mission.’
“He’s catching the others up about what’s happened so far,” Shinigami whispered in Heero’s ear, noticing the man’s irritation. “And Youkai’s promised not to use you as a specimen in one of his science experiments.”
“That’s good to hear,” Heero said, smiling.
‘Anyway, what’s our plan for this new job? It’s been a while since we’ve all worked together,’ Yami said once Hikari had left him to show off her new braid to her parents. ‘They’ve requested that all five of us are in attendance, correct?’
‘Hikari’s first real mission,’ Tenshi said with a smile, creating a band from a piece of curtain to bind her daughter’s hair. ‘From the same people who gave each of us our first missions.’
‘Wish they weren’t scum,’ Shinigami grumbled, moving his arm from around Heero’s shoulders to around his waist before pulling the human closer. ‘Oh, almost forgot. We’ve got a graduation coming up in a couple of days. There should be just enough time to return to the academy complete the bonding ceremony before it happens.’
‘Who?’ Youkai asked, straightening up. Social calls and the academy demanded extremely different attitudes.
‘Taita,’ Shinigami said proudly. Heero glanced up, recognizing the woman’s name as the one who’d been joking with his lover at dinner the other night. ‘She’s already announced her decision to stay on as a teacher afterwards.’
‘I remember her when she was just a winglet,’ Tenshi said, laughing. ‘Do you recall the time when snuck into the armory and got locked inside?’
It wasn’t until he noticed that he was being carried that Heero realized he’d fallen asleep listening to them speak. He opened his mouth to ask to be put down when Yami put a finger to his lips for quiet, pointing then to Hikari, who was also asleep and being carried by her father.
“We sleep with the sun on this planet,” Shinigami whispered in explanation. “And we’ll both need our energy tomorrow for the preparations, if the bonding is to be at all like Tenshi and Youkai described theirs like, and there’s also the ceremony. I bet the villagers have been busy as dwarves down below since they heard the news.”
They entered a chamber smaller than the other, but more cozy, with thick pallets scattered across the floor and a single curtained window through which Heero could see the tail end of the sunset. After nestling their child into a pile of blankets and pillows, Tenshi and Youkai claimed the largest and began to unabashedly undress each other, revealing that, like Shinigami, their bodies were genderless, with the slight exception of the slight curves Tenshi’s possessed that, when clothed, would suggest breasts.
Yami grabbed a pallet against one wall, leaving the one under the window for Heero and Shinigami, who joined his intended on the soft matt after divesting himself of clothes. The mortal found himself held protectively by immortal arms and prayed that time would just stop and he could remain there forever.
“Sleep well, Heero.”
