Chapter 9: Because of You
Janis stumbled over his feet crashing onto the pavement face first. Blood splattered on the ground as he coughed. His lungs felt like they wouldn’t expand enough to bring in a good amount of air. Vision was blurred almost to the point where everything ran together. His ears were muffled and aching along with his head and every joint in his body.
One moment, he was talking calmly with Rodecker about giving Lea a little slack and the next he was strung up in a dark room being given the beating of his life! The only thing the torturer would ask was, “Where is Patrick Zikamo’s key?” At first, Janis was stubborn and wouldn’t say a thing. The electrocution portion of the evening changed all that. He started admitting to crimes he had committed when he was five years old. Satisfied with his talking, the torturer switched back to inflicting physical harm and chanting the same question over and over. Janis didn’t know what it was he said to make him stop but he was happy. The torturer left him hanging for a long time before giving him a shot that knocked him out.
He awoke in some dark alley with all his clothing back on him and wallet, with nothing missing, in his back pant pocket. Hundreds of questions were swimming in his head. Only two constantly haunted him: 1.) Where was he? and 2.) Where was Lea? The second had him even more freaked out than what the torturer did to him. It was what had fueled him to travel as far as he did without knowing where he was going.
Every inch of him screamed, “NO!” as he tried to push his body off the pavement. His body retaliated by shutting down, leaving only the muffled sound of the world to mock him. ‘Lea…’

An enormous party was held in the food court for all those who had made it into the Kings of Mead Archery Contest. Heero sat with Trowa at a table close to the back watching the celebrators in amused silence. Quatre was on the dance floor with Relena waltzing to a slow song. With Trowa and Heero at the table were the Halstrom family, Pramjeet, Mitch, Orson and Jacob. Heero scanned the lines for the different food venders for any sign of Janis. He was nowhere to be found. ‘Something’s wrong. He wouldn’t miss this after the little speech he gave me back at the house.’
“Heero?” Trowa eyed him with a raised brow. “What is it?”
Heero shrugged, “It’s Janis. I thought he would be here by now.”
“Oh, yeah,” Mitch exclaimed. She patted Heero’s hand, “He said he’s going to be a little late. He left before you had a chance to light the hoops.” She flashed him a smile before returning to her conversation with Hana and Pramjeet.
‘He wouldn’t leave unless there he had no choice. This tournament means as much to him as is does Lea, if not more.’ Heero sat back sipping his soda deep in thought. Relena had narrated in cheerful detail what had happed between Rodecker’s bodyguard, Brock and herself. Relena didn’t think Brock was in a hurry, just being a “butthead.” ‘Brock was. The question is why.’ His eyes bulged as a chilling thought hit him. ‘What if Janis didn’t wait like he promised? What if Janis went to talk to Rodecker when Brock was sent to get Lea? Kuso… That could…’ A delicate pale peach hand waved inches from his face.
“Earth to Heero?” Relena sang. She laughed at his puzzled look, “You’re suppose to be enjoying the party.”
“Yeah… um… sorry,” he mumbled. Hana yanked his soda out of his hands. “Wha…”
She pulled him to his feet, “You’re the only who hasn’t danced. Now, don’t give me any lip, young man. Parties are meant to be enjoyed and that’s exactly what you’re gonna do!”
Laughter followed a bewildered Heero as Hana led him to the dance floor. ‘This is going to be a long night…’

Lea sighed in relief as she plopped onto the couch. She was back in her camper completely exhausted. Six hours of work was what she had put in instead of the promised four. A fellow Firefly had collapsed in the third hour of work and the systems went haywire in the fourth. Lea was feeling very generous do to the terrific standing her team had won and volunteered to stay two more hours to help out.
Her happy-go-lucky attitude quickly vanished as her shift came to an end. The energy draining generators had taken their toll on her. By the time she had reached the limo waiting in the company parking lot, she was making promises to do anything but work in the gens ever again.
When she had arrived at the camper, there was no one to greet her. Heero’s absence was due to the party that was undoubtedly in full swing. But Janis not being there did make Lea wonder. She shrugged it off. ‘He and Heero must be having the time of their lives at the party!’ Her mind was too numb with sleep to ponder it any further. ‘Get out of this cursed uniform and into bed. You have a long day ahead of you.’
She sighed and pushed off the couch to find some pajamas.

“Goodnight, Heero,” Relena hugged him then hopped back into the truck with Quatre. “See ya later!” she called out the window as they drove away.
Heero waved his goodbyes before heading into the camper. There was no light on and everything was silent. Either Lea hadn’t made it home or she was already in bed. Guessing she hadn’t made it home yet, Heero flicked on the light, closed and locked the door, then froze with eyes wide open along with his mouth.
The camper was the kind where the bed is at the end, which is hooked to the truck. The door is at the far end of the camper. Right at the door are the couch/dining area to one side and the kitchen. The bathroom and toilet are in the middle. Heero was facing the bed which had Lea laid out on top of it, spread eagle with only one leg in her uniform. The rest of her was bare, chest slowly rising in slumber. She didn’t even flinch at the sudden light change. Heero immediately turned around and closed his eyes.
It was too late, of course. His photographic memory had already captured the scene in full detail. Lea’s caramel brown skin was a little lighter around the chest and thighs area. Her breasts were small with the dark nipples puckered slightly due to the cool air. The dark brown patch of curls between her legs was neatly trimmed. Thanks to the way her legs were spread, he had a clear view of her pink little clit peaking from under the dark curls.
His jeans were becoming highly uncomfortable. ‘What did I do? I can’t go anywhere. The truck’s still hooked up to the camper. I can’t go back to the house. Janis would never let me live or die in peace if I did. Trowa and Quatre have already left. I really don’t want to sleep in the truck.’ He sighed, ‘She’ll understand. She’ll just wake up and get dressed and go to bed. Everything will be fine.’
With confidence boosted, he called over his shoulder, “Lea?” Her response was a deep intake of breath and rolling over to her side before continuing to sleep. He called her name again but nothing happened. She wouldn’t wake up. ‘Damn it all!’ Heero slowly turned back around. With her on her side, he could now see the cute little faded stretch marks on her butt. He swallowed the urge to trace one of those marks with his finger.
‘She can’t stay like that,’ the little voice said. ‘At least for your sake she can’t.’
‘Fine,’ logic answered in a huff. ‘Throw a blanket over her and call it a night.’
Her pajamas were on the bed beside her. It was clear she had every intention of changing but fell asleep in the middle of it. Pushing logic aside and praying for all the restraint in the world, Heero walked over to the bed and picked up the pajamas. They were a pants and shirt set that was pale bright orange color with puffy white clouds and sheep in a random pattern all over. ‘It’s like something Relena would wear,’ he thought in amusement. With a sigh, he proceeded to dress her.
First, he put the arm closest to him into the matching side of the shirt. Then he gently rolled her onto her other side so he could repeat the process with the other arm. Lifting the rows of buttons and buttonholes together, he quickly closed the pajama shirt making sure his fingers didn’t brush against her.
He glanced at Lea’s face to make sure she was sleeping and chastised himself for doing so. ‘You’ve been trained to know when someone’s faking it! Just hurry up and finish. You can’t take much more of this.’ His erection was rubbing against the fabric of his jeans every time he moved. It was making it difficult to remember what should be put on her next. A quick scan of her body made him remember. ‘Underwear… She needs… What the…’ How he missed the scars on her thighs, he’ll never know, but it made his blood run cold. They looked like someone had dug their nails into the inner part of her thighs and pulled towards her knees.
“According to an eyewitness, ‘Ms. Zikamo was badly beaten.’” Heero’s breath hitched in his throat. Slowly his eyes went back to her face. Eyes were still closed in peaceful slumber, full lips parted slightly. “I had broken my leg trying to escape the burglars.”
Heero caressed her cheek, thumb tracing the curve of her bottom lip. Lea leaned into his hand. He couldn’t name all the emotions racing through his heart but two stood out: adoration and anger. He adored Lea. Not once had he heard Lea complain about her leg or act like a victim. She always tried to weather it all by herself. The anger was towards the men who had given her the scars and Rodecker for binding Lea to the Firefly contract. He shook those thoughts from his head, ‘One thing at a time, solider.’ The underwear and pajama bottoms were slid on slowly. He really didn’t want to cover her up.
Once done, he tenderly tucked her into bed. With one more light trace to Lea’s lips, Heero set off to make a bed for himself on the couch. He was still quite hard when he laid down. Images of Lea’s naked form haunted him when he closed his eyes. He forced himself into slumber without allowing any relief.

Rodecker’s head popped up from the desk when the phone rang. He had fallen asleep at his desk back at the office. He went there to head up the search for Janis after he was kidnapped out of his spectator’s booth.
He wanted no word to be sent to Lea out of fear. Janis had accused Rodecker of Patrick’s murder. He said that Rodecker was using Lea to keep the colony under his thumb. That much was true. The murder, however was not. And no matter how much he wanted to tell Janis that, Rodecker couldn’t.
He picked up the phone on the third ring. Rubbing the bridge of his nose, he answered, “This is Rodecker.”
“He’s been found,” Brock said in a grave voice.
A chill ran through Rodecker, “Dead?”
“Alive,” he answered, “but barely. They ruffed him up pretty bad.”
“Shit!” He ran an unstable hand through is dark locks. “Tell Kayhill to post guards and don’t let anyone but medical staff touch him. And make sure the staff is checked and cleared.”
“Yes, sir.” Rodecker could hear the salute in Brock’s voice before the man hung up.
The cell phone in his pocket made him jump again. “This is…”
“He’s getting to close,” a male voice said in a conversational tone.
Rodecker swallowed hard, “I’ve tried my best…”
“Did you know there’s a Gundam pilot living with them?” Horror and shock caught the words in Rodecker’s voice. All that came out was a choked breath. The voice sighed, “I didn’t think so. Brock’s useless.” In a lighter tone, the voice said, “You have until the end of the tournament, Rodecker. Oh, and make sure that the Gundam pilot dies.” Rodecker started to protest but the voice cut him off, “If you don’t deliver what I want, I will get it myself and leave a bloody path that leads straight to you.”
The line went dead.

“Ah... yes!”
Lea’s eyes snapped open and then blinked a couple of times due to the onslaught of sunlight. The words she heard were slurred and strained and male. She frowned, wondering, “What the…”
A deep, guttural moan made her sit up and look around. Nothing was out of the ordinary, at least that’s what she thought. Heero was asleep on the couch. The way he was laying gave her full view of his face, which was contorted in concentration, and chest that was heaving with each breath. His arms were above his head like they were chained there. His legs were spread apart under the sheet, the leg closest to the edge draped over it onto the floor, with an unmistakable tent at the crotch area. Lea’s mouth fell open as she realized he was having a dream and not just any old dream. A wet dream.
Mesmerized, she crawled to the edge of the bed. Heero’s breathing became more strained. Muscles flexed as he griped the arm of the couch. His hips slowly rose off only to drop and rise again. There was a light sheen to his bronzed skin.
Heat gathered in between Lea’s legs. Her pajamas teased her skin. She wished it were his hands instead of fabric. Her eyes followed the slow rise and fall of his hips wishing she had the guts to straddle him. She couldn’t. None of her muscles would move. Watching was all she could do.
“Lea,” he grunted softly. His hips went still in the air. A wet spot formed at the tip of the tent. Gradually his hips returned to the couch. His hands lazily trailed down his chest to the tent. All the while, his eyes remained shut.
Lea noted the small yet satisfied smile on his lips. Then noticed she was holding her breath. His eyes snapped open when she let it out. She slapped her hand over her mouth when Heero’s Prussian blues focused on her. First shock registered on his face. Then something like oh-my-god flickered across before going blank. Without a word, he wrapped the sheet around his waist and, in two steps, was in the bathroom with the door locked.
Lea was speechless. ‘What just happened?’ She glanced at the bathroom door. The water was running. ‘Ok. Let’s take a moment here. I came home last night, started to change… Did I actually change?’ Lea’s eyes widened, “Oh!” Her hands slapped over her mouth. ‘HE changed me!’ Laughter erupted from her as she flopped onto the bed, “Oh, this is too good!”
“I can here you!” Heero yelled through the bathroom door. He sounded slightly annoyed.
“Sorry.” Her laughter softened to a chuckle. A knock at the camper door sobered her up the rest of the way.
Mitch smiled brightly when Lea opened the camper door, “Mornin’. Did I wake you up?”
“Nope,” Lea replied with a case of the giggles.
Mitch eyed her questionably, “Ok…”
“Ask me later,” Lea said in a hushed voice and glanced over her shoulder to make sure Heero hadn’t step out of the bathroom.
She lifted an eyebrow in hopeful wonder but Lea shot her another look to keep quiet. “Whatever,” Mitch shrugged. “I’ll meet you at the food court for breakfast.”
“Sure. Oh, Mitch!” she called out after her. “Have you seen Uncle Janis?”
“Not since the ceremonies last night. He’s most likely at the food court already.” Mitch waved and headed for the food court.
Lea waved and then frowned as she closed the door. ‘Something’s up. I hope he’s not planning some surprise party or something like that!’ She turned around to find Heero out of the shower with only his black jeans on and staring at her puzzled. “That was Mitch,” she explained with a weak smile.
“Any news of Janis?” he asked as he pulled on his shirt.
She was so mesmerized by the muscle movement that she didn’t answer right away. “Um, no,” she admitted blushing. ‘Get dressed,’ she chastised herself. ‘Put some distance between you and him. Then and only then can you think clearly.’ “He’s probably at the food court already scarfing down some food.” Lea tossed Heero a cell phone, “You can head over there without me. I’ll give you a call when I head out.”
‘Either she’s pissed at me because of the dream or hiding something.’ Visibly, Lea was tense. Her eyes were focused only on his and nowhere else. ‘The dream,’ he concluded with a sly smile. “As you wish, Ms. Lea.”
The blush returned a little more intense than before. She said nothing in return and quickly retreated into the shower.
Heero smiled brightly as he left for the food court.

“But sir!” the nurse called after him. “You really shouldn’t leave!”
Janis whirled around glaring with his good eye, “The doc said I ain’t got any bones broken, right?” The nurse nodded her fluffy golden head with fear in her eyes. He sighed, trying his best to calm down. “Look, I’ve been banged up worse than this before. The bills paid. I don’t see what the problem is.” He glanced at the door where he was staying. The undercover cop that had been posted there had left to go to the restroom.
“Let him go,” another nurse said. “He’ll be back the moment something goes wrong.”
He shook his head sadly and left the two nurses behind. ‘No. If I come back, I’ll be dead.’ Glancing over his shoulder every now and then, Janis made his way to the elevators. ‘Rodecker’s dog will be on to me any second now. I’ve got to get to a phone.. Then I can disappear….’ His heart felt heavy with that last thought. ‘She’ll be safer without me around. And if I’m right, Heero will be able to keep her safe.’
The elevator door opened. Some patients and staff members stepped out. Janis moved in and out of sight just as Brock rounded the corner to the room where he was suppose to be.

Aha! The Cliffy Beast has returned! Put away your guns, please. I have to admit, it was unexpected. I had every intention to continue but then both my muse and the Cliffy Beast said, “NO!” So, I hope to see you in the next chapter. Things are going to heat up a lot from here on out.
