Duo stared at his laptop, dismal mood trying to drop lower, but it didn't exactly have very much further it could go. Three days and no one had seen hide nor hair of one Marcus Knight, or Gregory Matthews, or whatever his name really was; and Duo had the sinking feeling they never would. He began to wonder if his assumption that the man was there was wrong, but it seemed like something he'd do. Knight was one of the most egotistical people he'd ever met. He sat back against the raised hospital bed and rubbed his eyes.
“You need to rest,” Heero said from across the room.
Duo raised an eyebrow as he saw him with his own laptop. “That's a bit hypocritical of you, don't you think? You're supposed to be on lunch break and visiting with your boyfriend.”
“I'm not sick.”
Before Duo could build up a retort, Wufei cut in. “Please tell me you two aren't going to go through this argument again. Because if you are, I'm requesting a room change or kicking one or both of you out.”
Duo snorted and looked back to his computer. “Feel free to kick me out, I hate it here. And tell your man over there to keep his opinions to himself.”
Wufei lifted his eyes briefly from his book. “Heero, shut the hell up.”
Duo laughed softly. “That's right, Fei, you teach him who's boss.”
“How are my patients today?”
He looked up. “Sally, how long are you planning on keeping me locked up in here? I would be makin' a lot more progress if you'd let me get to my own computer. I want out of this room and I'll only be two floors away.”
She huffed. “Duo, it's too risky.”
His eyes narrowed. “What are you planning? To keep me locked in here until you figure out how to fix me? Well, sucks to be you, 'cause that ain't happening. I'm stable. I haven't had a spell since that really sucky one a few days ago. Everything is functioning normally. Now, you get me released and let me go back to work!”
She stared at him. What he said was true, but the risk of infection on the main floors of the building was much higher. She sighed. “Promise to keep your mask on and I'll release you.”
He nodded. “I will.”
“All right, I'll be back.”
Duo leaned over and grabbed his cell. “Hey, can you bring me my spare uniform? Thanks.”
Heero raised an eyebrow and Duo shrugged. “You never know when the mood will strike, or whether your uniform will make it through unstained or not. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not walk around HQ with cum on my uniform for a whole day.”
Heero rolled his eyes. “Why am I even bothering to be surprised?”
Duo laughed. “Beats the heck outta me. Nothing I do should surprise anyone anymore.”
Wufei snorted and folded his book closed. “You think if I pulled the same stunt she'd let me go.”
Duo laughed. “What? Cum on your uniform?”
Wufei gave him a flat look. “No, demanding to be released.”
Heero looked to him briefly. “You know as soon as you're released you'll be surrounded by body guards anywhere you go, don't you?”
His nose wrinkled. “That's stupid.”
“Uh, you do remember someone tried to kill you last week, right?”
He spared Duo a stare, but said nothing as Blake came into the room with a uniform. Duo jumped up excitedly and took the uniform, throwing his arms around Blake. “You sir, are a lifesaver.” He pulled his mask down to his neck and kissed him.
“None of that.”
He pulled from Blake's arms and looked to Sally. “What?”
“Are you trying to get sick?”
He frowned. “But Blake's not sick.”
She arched an eyebrow. “Duo, no sexual activities until you're well.”
He gaped. “No can do, Sally. I may never get well and I'm not about to spend what might be the last year of my life celibate.”
“Duo-”
He rounded on Blake. “Don't you dare agree with her!” He stormed to the bathroom to change clothes and slammed the door.
“What's going on here?” Une asked from the doorway.
“Duo doesn't like the idea of no nookie,” Sally said.
Blake's face reddened as Une looked to him. “If you do regular checkups on Davis, shouldn't it be safe?”
“Woohoo!” Duo's voice came from the bathroom. “I knew I loved you for a reason!”
Sally shook her head but couldn't stop the smile that lifted her lips. “All right. Starting next week, we'll do checkups every two weeks. But if your nose so much as itches I want you to come in, got it?”
He nodded. “I wouldn't do anything to put him at risk.”
Une smiled inwardly. When Blake had first joined Preventers she didn't think he'd ever make friends due to how shy he was. But Duo had won him over. She wasn't sure when the friendship had changed into their present relationship, but she was glad Duo finally had someone. “Go back upstairs, Davis. I'll walk Maxwell back for you.”
He rolled his eyes and left with a wave to Wufei and Heero. Duo came out of the bathroom and paused long enough for Sally to give him his daily dose of the, what he liked to call, 'keep Duo alive' concoction. He and Une were silent until they reached the elevators and he cut his eyes to her.
“I know you have to take me off the field. I'm not stupid enough to put a mission at risk, but I can still be helpful at a desk.”
She nodded; glad he was the one to say it so she didn't have to. As difficult as it was for him, by him saying it, somehow that made it his decision and gave him back some level of control.
“Of course.”
He stepped out the elevator and entered the room filled with cubicles. Mitchell leaned back in her chair to look at him and her eyes widened slightly. He cringed, wanting to rip the mask off, but knowing it would be stupid. He hadn't thought about the fact that no one outside of his friends and the medical staff had seen him since the illness resurfaced. The only outward tell at the moment was the mask, but the fact was, they all knew that without a miracle he was a dead man walking.
“Good to have you back, Maxwell.”
He turned to Adams. “Good to be back,” he said, not quite feeling as good about it as he had a few minutes earlier. He moved to his cubicle, ignoring the curious glances sent his way. He fell into his seat, booted his computer, and dropped his forehead to his desk.
“What's wrong? I thought you wanted to come back.”
“Didn't think about all the stares I was gonna get.”
“It'll pass once they're used to having you back.”
He sat up and looked to Blake. “Maybe.”
Blake moved into the small space and knelt beside the chair, staring into the wide violet eyes that had captivated him from the first moment he'd met the braided man. “Duo, I-”
Sensing something was coming that he didn't want to hear, he pressed his fingers to Blake's lips. “Don't.”
Blond brows drew together. “Why not?”
“Because that's when things start getting complicated. That's when arguments start and it becomes the beginning of the end.”
He shook his head. “Not saying it doesn't change the fact it's true. There will be arguments. The 'honeymoon' phase doesn't last forever, but that doesn't mean the end is coming.”
He released a breath and closed his eyes. “Blake, I'm dying.”
“We don't know that for sure. Sally could find a way to get them working again. And, if not, there are tons of doctors and scientists out there who could give it a shot.” He took Duo's hand and tugged him to his feet, pulling him from the room and down the hall to the locker room.
He locked the door and pressed Duo to the wall, lowering the mask to steal a heated kiss like they hadn't shared in weeks. Duo folded his arms over Blake's shoulders, completely giving himself over to the feel of the taller man's body pressed to his.
As the blond's lips trailed down his neck he tilted his head to the side, allowing more access. Blake's hands trailed down Duo's sides in slow circles before resting momentarily on his hips. The lips moved back to claim his own and he almost felt like crying at the sensation of Blake's tongue caressing his own. The hands slid from his hips to cup his behind and pull him flush to the blond.
He gasped. It had been a while and he had been living on pins and needles for the last week. He needed Blake as he never had before. “Please tell me you have lube.”
Blake chuckled. “Of course. I wouldn't tease you and not put out.”
“Good.” He mashed his lips to Blake's in an almost manic kiss as he quickly undid his pants and pushed them down before seeing to Blake's. He turned around, and put his hands to the wall, braid clenched in one to keep it out of the way.
Blake raised an eyebrow. “In a hurry?”
“Please, I can't wait.”
He pulled the lube out of his pocket, coated two fingers and slid one in, nuzzling his neck. “Can't wait for what? Me or sex?”
Duo pushed back at the finger, wishing Blake would just forget the prep and take him. “Both,” he gasped honestly as another finger joined the first. “It isn't just the sex,” he whispered. “It's because it's you.”
His lips curved to a smile on Duo's neck. He slid in a third finger and Duo whimpered, slamming back onto them. Blake had found it intriguing that, in either his or Duo's bedroom, the braided man was definitely loud; but when it came to 'at work' play, he didn't seem to have a problem with controlling the noise level... Not that he always did.
He slid his fingers out and slathered more lube on his straining erection. “Ready?”
“I was the moment you dragged me in here.”
Blake shook his head and pushed into his lover slowly, relishing the tight heat that swallowed him slowly. Duo was panting soft encouragements to 'hurry the hell up'. Blake wasn't one to rush sex very often, but he knew Duo needed it as hard and fast as he was willing to give at the moment. So, once he was fully seated and both were adjusted to each other, he proceeded to do just that.
Duo pressed his forehead to the back of his hand as strong fingers wrapped about his hipbones and Blake slid in and out of him. He knew Blake could easily snap him in half, and also knew that the blond Preventer would always treat him like a priceless treasure to be cherished. It was a heady experience to know that someone so strong was completely enamored of him, a position he took very seriously. He had Blake's heart in the palm of his hand and took special care to make sure to never bruise it.
Not that it wasn't a two-way street; Duo would readily take a bullet for him. As much as he loathed admitting it, if he ever received a look that fell below contentment, he'd probably be a basket case. He'd never thought he'd have the capacity to care for anyone so strongly as he did the blond, but he couldn't really deny that he did care.
All thought ceased as Blake changed angles and stars exploded behind Duo's closed eyelids. A heavy moan escaped him and lips pressed to his neck as a slick hand wrapped around his length and pumped him in time with the thrusts.
If they were on a bed, his toes would be curling and his knees would be drawing to his chest as the heat in the pit of his stomach moved downward. But, as they were standing, all he could do was trust Blake to keep him from crumbling to the floor and ride out the intense passion that had him gasping and moaning.
His climax hit and he dropped his head back to Blake's shoulder, shuddering as he felt warmth spread inside him at the same time. Blake kissed his shoulder.
“I love you, Duo Maxwell, whether you want to hear it or not.”
Something inside Duo shattered... or maybe was made whole... and he gripped the arms around his chest, tears slipping from underneath closed lids. “Bastard,” he muttered half-heartedly.
Blake chuckled and kissed Duo's neck. Violet eyes slit open and met chocolate brown. “Me too.” The answering grin, Duo decided, was worth tempting fate.
