I’m not a good patient. I can admit that. I complain and grumble and groan. It’s the best way to cover up the fact that I’m terrified to be here. I hate not being able to even wipe my own ass. I hate having people hovering and helping. It makes me feel like a weak kid. Of course, then I have to remember the long road with Heero and try to keep perspective. I’m not dying. In fact, it’s a miracle I’m alive.
Everyone says I’m doing great, but as days turned into weeks, I’m not happy with the progress. Broken bones healed, bruises faded. I finally have my mind cleared of all the drugs. Stir crazy doesn’t even begin to cover the level of boredom I was feeling. Oh, and in case anyone cares, physical therapy sucks.
-----Duo stared at the parallel bars in front of him, wishing he was anywhere but there. “You’re a sadist,” he muttered as the physical therapist, Chris, stood at the end of the bars. The man chuckled. “No, it just feels that way now. When this is over you’ll be singing my praises.”
Duo snorted. “Whatever.”
He clenched his sweaty palms to the bars and fought to walk the few feet to the end of the bars. He made it halfway before his knees dropped towards the floor. Chris – bless his heart (in a very sarcastic manner) – caught him before he hit the concrete floor.
“Thanks,” Duo bit out between his tightly clenched teeth as the therapist sat him back in his chair for a breather. “I’m never going to get this.”
Chris sighed softly and knelt in front of Duo. “You know, all I’ve heard from your friends is how strong you are. They’ve raved about the fact that you’re not one to ever give up. So why are you giving up now?”
He caught his bottom lip between his teeth. “Because, sooner or later I’m going to reach the end of this, and I don’t think I can handle it if nothing changes.”
Chris nodded. “It’s normal to be scared, but if you don’t try, there’s a good chance you’ll never walk again. How sad would it be to only put in half an effort and not walk, when if you’d put in full effort you would be walking again? You’re looking at this all wrong. Your back has healed very well. There is a much better chance that you will get feeling back than you won’t.”
Duo took a breath. Chris was right. He nodded. “Okay. Let’s do this.”
The therapist smiled and helped him back to his feet. Duo took a determined breath, gripped the bars tightly, and kept his eyes focused on Chris and he swung one foot in front of the other. It took him nearly twenty minutes, but he reached the end and couldn’t keep the grin from his face.
“That’s more like it.”
Chris sat him back in the chair for a breather. “You did very well.”
An hour later he was sweating and exhausted, but he’d managed to get himself down the bars twice. He was returned to his room, given a shower with help, and settled back in bed with what he supposed was supposed to pass as food. A few minutes later he looked up as Wufei came into the room.
“What’s wrong?”
“Can’t figure out what this shit is.” His eyes traveled over Wufei and a soft smile raised his lips. “You’re a sight for sore eyes.”
He sat on the edge of the bed and kissed Duo’s lips softly, heart jumping a little as he noticed a change in his lover. “How are you?”
“Wanting out of here and missing you beside me.” He shoved the tray and table to the side and gripped Wufei’s hand. He lifted his other hand to cup the Asian’s cheek in his palm, gazing intently into his eyes. “I’m gonna walk out of here, Fei.”
A relieved breath left Wufei. “It’s about time you realized that.” He kissed Duo’s forehead. “So what helped you wake up?”
“The therapist gave me what for this morning.”
Wufei chuckled. “Glad to hear it.” He tilted his head slightly. “How about some good news to cheer you up?”
“I’d love some.”
“We’re going to be uncles again.”
Duo grinned widely. “Heero and Quat are gonna be proud papas?”
“Yes.” He watched the evident joy in his lover’s eyes and once again the ‘preggy Fei’ comment came back to him. He had a feeling he’d never forget it. Of course, there was no point in talking about it now. That was a discussion better left for once Duo was well and back on his feet.
“How’s Heero taking it?”
“I don’t know. I haven’t had a chance to talk with him about it yet. The same day they found out Ronnie was pregnant Quatre came home to find they’d been robbed.”
Duo’s eyes widened. “Damn.”
“Fortunately, it was an extremely unintelligent person. Didn’t bother to wear a mask. They know who it is and will probably have him in custody by the end of the week.”
“That’s good, at least.” He huffed. “I am bored out of my mind.”
“What would you like to do to entertain yourself?”
His grin returned. “I think I’ve been a bit too tame on the charge nurse, don’t you agree?”
Seeing that gleam in his lover’s eyes, Wufei would have agreed with anything.
-----“I wasn’t expecting you here.”Heero looked up from his computer to Trowa. “Wufei is with Duo today.”
He shook his head. “I meant due to the robbery.”
“Oh. The house is cleaned up and the local authorities are looking for Greg.”
He moved further into the room to look at Heero’s computer. “And so are you. Need some help?”
“Not on a search this easy.” He turned in his chair. “Did you need something?”
“Not really.”
Heero lifted an eyebrow. “What is it?”
Trowa flushed slightly. “I’m kind of hiding from Ronnie.” He cleared his throat. “Actually, I think it’s unfair that I should have to deal with the hormones associated with your child. She should come live with you for the next nine months.”
Heero grimaced. “That’s a good point.”
Trowa started. “I was just joking, Heero.”
“I’m not. You and Ronnie are doing us a huge favor. It’s only right for us to be there every step of the way.”
“But our apartment-“
“Is too small for you, anyway. You could stay with us and find a new place after the baby is born.”
Trowa stared down at the desk in thought. Things were quite cramped in their apartment, but they didn’t have much in the way of savings after the expenses of having a baby. Not that they were in dire straits, but it would really help to have some time to save up money. He nodded.
“I’ll talk to Ronnie about it.”
“Talk to me about what?”
He looked to the door and smiled at his wife. “Feeling better?”
She blushed. “Sorry I called you a dumbass son of a bitch.”
He laughed. “Don’t worry about it.” He pulled her to his chest and kissed the tip of her nose. “What do you say to moving in with Quatre and Heero until the baby is born and then find a better place to live?”
She smiled brightly, looking to Heero. “Really?”
He nodded. “I think it would be a good idea, both for you two and us. I’m surprised we didn’t think of it earlier.”
She squealed in delight, pulling away from Trowa and clapping her hands. Trowa shook his head. “I didn’t think it’d make you that happy.”
“You crazy? I get to be a fly on the wall of the Winner/Yuy residence for nine whole months! Oh the fodder for my wet dreams.”
Trowa gagged slightly and looked to Heero who was giving him a ‘don’t look at me, she’s your wife’ look.
Ronnie laughed, dropped a quick kiss to Trowa’s lips, sent a wink to Heero, and danced from Heero’s office. The Japanese man shook his head.
“How you keep up with her I’ll never know.”
He shrugged. “An insanely stupid amount of caffeine.” He gazed at Heero for a long moment. “Thank you.”
“It’s the least I can do.”
“No,” he swallowed, “thank you for forgiving me for hurting you.”
Blue eyes widened slightly. After Trowa had broken things off between them, they’d never discussed it again. He released a breath. “It hurt; I won’t deny that because we’d both know I was lying. But you can’t help who you are any more than I can help who I am. It wasn’t meant to be, and I accepted that a long time ago.”
Trowa nodded. “And you’re happy now.”
Heero smiled. “Very much so.”
“I’m glad you and Quatre got together. It bothered me for you to be alone for so long. I felt… guilty.”
Heero stood and pulled Trowa into a quick hug. There was a slight sting of the long lost first love, but it in no way could touch the contentment and happiness he had with his life as it was now. “Don’t feel guilty. I learned to love with you. I might never have been able to have the life with Quatre that I have now if I hadn’t had that.”
-----Quatre signed some paperwork and closed the folder, answering the vidphone as it chimed. He nodded to Une. “Hello, how are you today?”She pursed her lips. “In a little bit of a bind, actually. I need your assistance with a case.”
He frowned slightly. “It’s not the best of times, what kind of case?”
“I’ve got plenty of people on it, but I need someone who fits a certain criteria to get some information for me.”
“Okay. What criteria?”
“Would you be able to come into the office so we can discuss it more thoroughly?”
“When?”
“Now.”
He glanced to the clock. “Yes, I can be there in ten minutes.”
“Thank you.”
The phone cut off and he left his home office, waving at Marty on his way out. “I’m heading out, Marty.”
“Will you be home in time for supper?”
He paused. “I’m not sure. We’ll just pick something up.”
“Okay. Have a good weekend.”
“You too.”
He made the drive without thinking about the assignment Une was considering him for. He didn’t have nearly enough information to go on. But it was rather rare for her to pull him in on cases. He parked and moved up into the familiar Preventer Headquarters’ building. He wanted to make a stop by Heero’s office but decided he could do that on the way out. He was let into Une’s office quickly.
“Quatre, thank you for coming so quickly.”
He nodded and sat. “No problem. So, what’s the case?”
“I need someone to go in and get some information.” In a rare moment of uncertainty, Une briefly dropped her eyes and cleared her throat. “Someone… pretty enough to be a believable cross dresser in a certain club.”
Quatre blanched. “Come again?”
“It’s only a one evening thing, two hours at the top. I need you to get into a club and meet an informant. His usual contact is sick and we need this information. I’m not asking you to actually get involved with the case. Just get in, hear what he has to say and return the information to me.”
Quatre stared at her blankly. “You want me to dress like a woman?”
She sighed softly. “If there was anyone else I could ask I would.”
“Please tell me you’re joking.” It was a ridiculous plea considering Une never joked.
She shook her head. “I wish I was. If you can’t do it I need to know now. I’ve only got three hours until we’re supposed to meet the contact and we’re very low on options.”
Quatre groaned softly as he rubbed his eyes. “How important is the information?”
“It’s about a human trafficking ring.”
He hissed through his teeth. “Okay, I’ll do it. Backup?”
Une pressed the intercom. “Send him in.”
Quatre looked over his shoulder as Zechs moved into the room. “Hello, Quatre.”
He took a breath. “Is this the part where I should say I’m glad it’s you?”
Zechs chuckled as he remembered the discussion they’d had about a mission he’d had with Heero years ago. “I guess you could look at it that way.”
Quatre looked back to Une. “I hope you’ve got someone to help me out here because no matter how many sisters I have or how I look, I’ve never dressed in women’s clothing.”
She nodded. “Go down to Yuy’s office.”
Quatre started. “Heero knows?”
“Not yet, but I figured you’d like to tell him. I’ll send Grace there and she’ll get you fixed up.”
He nodded and stood, leaving the office with his mind spinning. What the hell had he just agreed to?
TBC…
A/N Okay, yeah... no clue where that came from! LOL But I'm definitely looking forward to writing it! Hehe
