Chapter 9
Despite her excellent results on her bi-weekly bloodwork, ultrasounds, and routine tests, Pan was weak. Very weak.
Her appetite thrived, but the more she satisfied her cravings for ham and medium-rare steak, the stronger her innocent baby had became. She attempted to eat healthy, and for about half the time, she succeeded. Dr. Gobri recommended extra vitamins with her typical, pre-natal vitamins just in case she rejected the healthy diet.
At the beginning of her pregnancy, Pan weighed in at one hundred and ten pounds; she had gained over forty. Her doctor was pleased, yet all the weight was in her stomach region; Her arms and legs were frail, almost skeletal-like; Her face was thin and her cheekbones were almost visible. Dark circles consumed the delicate skin around her eyes, for there were many times she had to sleep in the bathroom, beside the toilet. Trunks disallowed this after he caught her the fourth time, and brought in a sturdy trash can to place beside their bed so she would be able to sleep more comfortable.
Pan lied on the bed, watching the stars through the balcony door. The light was dimmed, just enough to see objects in the bedroom. She uncovered her cold body and lifted her shirt. Her belly button was protruding, and her perfect stomach now had enough stretch marks to create a road map… A road map covered with bruises. She cried out in pain as she watched a visible foot stretch out, making a print just above her belly button. Her eyes widened as her breath escaped her lungs at this discovery. She smiled; at least the baby had five toes.
"Mmmmm…" She moaned.
Trunks then stormed into the bedroom. "Pan, what's wrong?"
"I saw its foot," she stated.
Trunks raised an eyebrow. "Its foot?"
She pointed to the baby's footprint that had created a fresh bruise. Trunks's mouth slowly dropped. "I… Whoa…"
"Should we call the doctor?"
"No… No," He shook his head. "I think it was just stretching… it's just… well, stronger, than your typical baby."
Pan wrapped her arms around her growing stomach. Despite how horrible she knew she looked, Trunks thoroughly believed she looked even more beautiful pregnant with his child. That was why he secretly pursued his mother's assistance in giving Pan a night she would never forget; he was going to surprise her with a candlelit dinner on their private patio, where all their chaos began, ending with a proposal for marriage. His stomach fluttered as though it had suddenly sprouted wings, feeling a wave of nausea to rise within him. He placed his hand over his right pants pocket and gently squeezed the small box that contained the beautiful diamond ring.
He then covered Pan with the thin blanket and kissed her forehead, which resulted in a warm smile coming across her face. He kissed her large stomach and stood, keeping his hand on hers. "Mom’s wanting to see you in a few minutes." To surprise you with an evening gown.
Pan nodded as she watched her prince slowly walk backwards out of the room, never breaking the heavy eye contact between them. When he was out of her sight, he dashed down the hall and stepped foot into his mother's laboratory. He walked past her office door and opened another door, which opened what appeared to be a large storage room. He walked down the first aisle and opened a large box. He pulled out a small, white robot that appeared to be the size of a volleyball. "I hope I don't regret this…" He turned over the small robot and held the 'on' switch for several seconds.
"G—G—G…." the robot sounded out a couple of electronic noises, followed by a buzz and a loud, power up screech.
Trunks's eyes lit up in happiness. "Giru… I need your help."
Pan hesitantly pulled her weak body out of bed and waddled slowly down the hall, looking in each room for Bulma. Even though her task of getting out of bed was grueling, walking felt pretty good to her. She felt her joints quietly crackle from the stiffness; she groaned at the little pain in her knee from the weight of her ever-growing stomach."Bulma?" She called out.
"I'm in here, honey," she heard her yell.
She entered Bulma and Vegeta's large bedroom. Her large, dark eyes fixed on the even-larger walk-in closet; the door was open and the light was on inside. What was she up to? "Trunks said you wanted to see me?"
"Yes," the heiress smiled, holding a gown. "I have a few dresses that I would like for you to try on."
"Why?" Pan raised an eyebrow; the last time she wore a dress, she had gotten pregnant.
"Well, when I was pregnant with both Trunks and Bulla," she started, holding up a lime-green dress. "As one of the CEOs of the company, I still had to attend events. I wanted to give you one that you liked."
"Wow," she smiled. "I appreciate it… but I don't—"
"Don't be silly," Bulma waved a hand towards her. "You deserve one more night of special treatment, like a princess, before the baby gets here."
"Well, all right," Pan was still confused on the way Bulma was acting, who held up a black, strapless dress. Pan observed it. "This is cute…"
"Try it on!" Bulma smiled. Pan looked at her, unsure, then slowly took it and made her way to their private bathroom. She removed her clothes and tried the stretchy dress on. It was snug in all of the right places, including her stomach, but the dress flowed beautifully down her thin form. She had noticed that the chest area had small ruffles around the top, and the dress was decorated with an occasional, tiny, gold sequin. The hem had larger, elegant ruffles that hugged her knees.
She walked out of the bathroom and Bulma fought back tears of joy. "Oh, Pan, you look beautiful!"
"Thank you?" Pan raised an eyebrow. "It's pretty comfortable… I love it. Thank you."
Bulma pulled out a pair of black flats, which had a huge, black bow at the toe of each shoe. "You should pair these up with your dress."
"Bulma, why are you—"
"Here, let's do your hair…"
"But I—"
Trunks, wearing a black suit, lit two of the candles on the small table, completing the decorations and the romantic feel to his surprise. Giru spluttered as he floated around the patio, placing a bottle of sparkling fruit juice in the small rack on the table."Giru, giru, giru… Trunks… Pan like surprise?" The robot asked his lavender haired friend.
"I hope she does…" He sighed. "I can't wait to see her."
"Giru's so excited for Trunks and Pan!" The small, white robot spluttered and flew around in circles happily.
Trunks smiled, turning on a small stereo system located beside the sliding glass doors. He closed his eyes, nervous; he had never felt so antsy in his life. Any time, it seemed like, he was going to be a father to his first child. He was praying that Pan would accept his proposal of marriage; after all that he had put her through, by getting her pregnant with a child with unknown capabilities, he felt she deserved all the happiness in the world.
He looked at the wooden door that led to the room that entered the patio, which was opening; his breath became caught in his throat. "Places, Giru!"
"Places!? Giru, giru, giru," he hid underneath the table, which was decorated with a large, white fabric. Trunks slapped his forehead with his palm in embarrassment. Trunks stood by the sliding glass door, attempting to keep his nervous sweating under control. The wooden door revealed the confused mother-to-be, followed by Trunks's mother.
"Surprise…" Bulma smiled.
"What?" Pan's eyes widened.
The sliding glass door opened, Pan's eyes attempting to take in the sight in front of her. The railing around the patio was wrapped with the most beautiful garland of flowers. Her eyes fixed on the two burning candles. Trunks walked to her from behind and slid his hands down each of her shoulders, kissing the nape of her neck tenderly.
"Did… you do this for me?" Pan blinked.
Trunks smiled. "Yes."
"I love you…" She turned to him. "This is phenomenal."
"All right, you two. Go ahead and have a seat. You will have plenty of cuddle time later," Bulma smiled. When the two became seated across from each other, the heiress clapped her hands. A middle aged waiter appeared from the other side of the patio and placed a covered tray in front of each of them. Giru revealed itself from under the table and proceeded to pour fruit juice in the delicate drinking flutes.
"Giru!" Pan smiled at the robot.
He jumped as he finished pouring the drink in her flute. "Pan! Giru… giru… giru… How is Pan feeling?"
"I'm trying to make it," she shook her head. "This pregnancy has gotten the best of me."
The lavender-haired businessman took her hand. "You look so beautiful."
"I don't feel beautiful," she doubted.
Trunks glared at her, causing her to giggle. Giru pulled the covers off of their meals effortlessly and sputtered away from the two. Pan's instincts of devouring the large steak in front of her attempted to take over, but she was determined to act like a lady, despite the impromptu circumstances. She picked up the fork and ate daintily, still taking in the surprise from Trunks. She savored the beautiful taste of the food inside her mouth, trying to appear emotionless, but let out two small moans. Trunks smirked at this and continued to eat his own food; a large slice of chicken. She enjoyed every bite of her food; despite her attempts, she finished eating in half the time of when Trunks did. She played with the remainder of the sauce on her plate to keep from the environment becoming awkward.
"Ahh, that was great," Trunks smiled, then took her hand again. "How about some dancing?"
Pan could not hide her smile. "I'd love to."
He assisted in helping her up, and the two slowly swayed from side to side to the rhythm of the soft music playing. The couple looked in each other's eyes, not regretting the first thing that had happened to them. She wrapped her arms around the back of his neck and tried to get closer to him. He felt her breath on his cheek, which caused his heart to melt. He took her in a passionate kiss.
"How about a toast?" He smiled, resting his forehead against hers.
She said nothing, but grinned in return as he broke away from her hold to retrieve the two flutes of fruit juice. He handed one to her. "To us. To our family. And our life together."
"And forever," she clinked her glass flute against his and the two sipped gently on the drink.
"Pan… I want you to know that I love you more than anything in this world. I would do anything for you."
The mother-to-be smiled warmly. "I love you…"
"All I want in life is your happiness and to have a happy baby, and I will do whatever it takes to make that happen…"
Trunks reached his hand in his pocket and wrapped his fist around the ring box. "Pan, I want to spend the rest of my life with—"
Suddenly, Giru flew back onto the patio, shaking. "Danger, danger, danger!" It spoke loudly.
"What?" Trunks lowered his eyebrows.
Pan looked to the robot in confusion.
"Baby! Danger, danger, danger."
Vegeta then rushed onto the patio. "What is going on out here?!"
"What? Father… I'm just treating her to a nice night out –"
Though the two avoided Giru initial warning, Pan suddenly choked out a scream, clutching onto her large bump. Trunks' and Vegeta's eyes widened simultaneously and quickly backed away in surprise. Her stomach began to twist into different shapes before their very eyes. Amniotic fluid and blood heavily streamed down her legs and onto the ground underneath her, creating a large, thick puddle. Her ribs were shattering and breaking, loud crunches filling their ears. She began to loudly cough as blood spilled from her mouth and nostrils uncontrollably. She nearly collapsed, but Trunks caught her just in time. "Call Doctor Gobri!"
Vegeta took Pan from his son's hold. "There's a full moon out, you fool! The baby is trying to transform. We have to get her inside to a pitch dark room before it kills her. NOW. No time to waste!"
Trunks, who was overwhelmed with panic and fear, carried an unconscious Pan inside the emergency room. "She's in labor! This baby has to come out! She's unconscious!""Doctor Gobri's patient…" One nurse whispered quickly to another. A minute later, a gurney, followed by three assistants, appeared and Trunks placed her gently on the small hospital bed. The medical group quickly discovered that he was covered in blood. Three doctors worked energetically around her as they dashed down a long hallway, quickly supplying her with an oxygen mask and placing her long hair into a surgical net, trying not to be afraid of her violently-shifting stomach.
"Room 40B," one doctor said to another. "Bulma Briefs already contacted the doctor. This is an emergency Caesarean." They rushed to an operating room, where they met Dr. Gobri, who was fully dressed in scrubs and prepared for surgery. The assistants sat her unconscious body up and a young woman poked her in the middle of a spine with a large needle, which was connected to a long catheter.
Trunks was stunned at the sudden events as he watched the chaos in the operating room; he looked at the love of his life, lying on the operating table, unaware of what was going on. A young man, a nurse, pushed hospital scrubs into his arms. "Quickly, put these on. Normally, you would have to go outside due to this procedure, but there's no time." The father-to-be quickly did as told.
"We have to get the dress off of her, now," Doctor Gobri ordered as she quickly cut up the dress, slicing it in half to expose her severely-bruised stomach.
"Doctor, shouldn't we put a hospital gown on her —"
"There's no time! We have to get the baby out before she codes!" She urged. "Dr. Chang, have you administered the spinal anesthesia in case she wakes up?"
"I have," A young woman was pushing buttons on a machine that was mounted on a short pole.
Two nurses put up a curtain to Pan's neck as another nurse was placing pads on her chest to monitor her vitals. Trunks sat beside her, preparing to cry from the fear.
"There's no time to wait. Let's get to work!" Doctor Gobri yelled as she slid a scalpel across Pan's lower stomach.
The father-to-be inhaled through his nose, and exhaled through his mouth, stroking Pan's hair lovingly. "Pan… I'm sorry. This is my fault." He released a shaky breath, resting his forehead against hers. Her expression was lifeless, which caused a tear to escape from his eye. He kissed her cheek tenderly, observing the dried blood that had ran down her chin.
"Mr. Briefs, I have reached the uterine wall. We are about to deliver the baby," Doctor Gobri announced.
Trunks blinked, peeking over the curtain. He was lucky that he was not squeamish when it came to blood; however, the loss of blood seemed abnormal to him. His eyes widened when Doctor Gobri pulled out a baby's head of Pan's bump. Its face was lightly covered in vernix, but the face instantly melted Trunks's heart; its cheeks were perfectly round, and its dark purple hair was long and straight, but matted. He found himself unable to breathe, let alone speak. Doctor Gobri pulled the (very) large baby out into the world. “We have a little girl!"
The baby erupted in a cry. Trunks walked around the curtain and stared at the baby in amazement. Two nurses proceeded to wipe the baby off and use an instrument to suck fluids out of her passageways. Her tail was wrapped around her leg, but began to flip furiously. As Doctor Gobri aggressively worked to stitch Pan's wounds together, the young nurse smiled, handing a pair of scissors to the new dad. He looked at her, confused. She pointed to the umbilical cord. He smiled, nodding, understanding. He cut it effortlessly. After the baby was cleaned, he held the child for the first time in disbelief. He could not stop the tears from rolling down his cheeks. "Hi there…"
When the baby girl heard her father’s voice, her crying had ceased. She opened her eyes for the first time; her eyes were widely set like Pan's, but bright blue like his. He began to sob against the newborn, cuddling the bundle tightly. He heard a monitor begin to frequently beep, faster and faster, but paid no attention to it.
"Dad, we are going to go ahead and have you go to the nursery with the new baby." Before he could protest, three nurses urged him through a separate door, leaving Pan alone on the operating table. When the door was closed, Dr. Gobri was frantically working over Pan. "We're losing her! Get your act together, Mayoko! Start CPR! Ro, charge the defibrillator. Shin, get two pints of AB, stat!" She ran over to the emergency defibrillator and pulled out the two pads. She ripped the curtain down and placed them on the appropriate places of her chest. "Clear!"
The nurses jumped back as the body jolted from underneath them. With sweat beginning to cover her brow, she observed the flat line on the heart monitor. "Shit." She charged the two pads again and placed them on the body. "Clear!" Nothing. She had to save this poor girl. Her face twisted in concentration as she tried one more time. "Clear!"
The body jolted one more time, but Pan was lifeless. Doctor Gobri pulled her mask off as the medical staff was silent, the monotone beep of the monitor filling the hospital staff's ears.
