Chapter 1 The Trip Home

\"Some turbulence?\" Kai grumbled as he picked himself up and fumbled with his seatbelt. \"More like a lot of it.\"

Outside, the sky had grew dark. But Kai\'s sharp mind told him something was wrong. It was 12 noon, and they were above cloud cover. There was no reason for the sky to be dark. Kai looked into Rei\'s uncertain eyes. Evidently Rei had noticed the same thing too. But everyone else seemed to either be ignoring it, or shrugging it off as bad weather.

Suddenly, a streak of lightning flashed across the black skies, outside Kai\'s window. And for a faint moment, Kai thought he saw the vague shadow of a devil... Volten. Kai kept quiet. Rei hadn\'t seen it, and Kai didn\'t want to worry him.

\"We have run into unexpected weather complications.\" The announcer\'s voice crackled to life again on the intercom. \"As such, we will be making an emergency landing in Beijing. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.\"

Kai saw the plane dip below the clouds as Rei spoke beside him.

\"Beijing? But that\'s some distance away... I\'ll have to call Uncle Lin to tell him...\"

\"What\'s wrong?\"

\"Uncle Lin was supposed to pick us up from Guangzhou and drive us to the village. But now that we\'re landing in Beijing, I\'ll have to call him to inform him about it.\"

\"I thought you had lost your family?\"

\"Oh, Uncle Lin\'s not my true uncle. He\'s one of the elders in the village, and we use the term \'uncle\' to show respect.\"

\"I guess I still have lots to learn about your village, and China.\"

Rei laughed. \"Don\'t worry. You\'ll get used to it.\"

=Some more time later=

Rei and Kai jostled their way out of the airport amidst angry yells from disgruntled passengers. But Rei was familiar enough with the system to know that there was no way they would be getting any compensation of any kind. In times like this, he had learnt to just write it off as bad luck. Rei followed after Uncle Lin as he walked out of the hotel, Kai trailing behind. Uncle Lin was warm enough, even if he was a bit outspoken at times. If everyone in Rei\'s village were just like him, he would get along with them just fine.
