Scents came to me first as I slowly woke surrounded by strange warmth. For a moment, I lay with my eyes closed, trying to identify where I was. Ofcourse, I was in the boy’s room. A soft
sigh of contentment escaped me as I remembered.

It was raining, cold icy rain, and I was trying to find something for supper so I
wouldn’t have to sleep on an empty stomach again. I had resigned myself to a fruitless night,
even the mice were hiding on a night like this, when he showed up. I think it was his clothes that made me notice him at first. They were clean, nice, nothing like the filthy rags that most of the inhabitance of the block I call home wore. His dark hair was pulled back in a tight tail; his sharp dark eyes darted around the alleyway, a small pack tossed over his shoulder. He had
the air of a predator around him. One doesn’t survive long around here without being able to spot them. I had pulled back into the shadows, trying to make myself as small as possible, not wanting to attract his attention. The boy was dangerous. Something must have caught his eye because he suddenly turned toward me; eyes focused on the shadow I was trying to disappear
into. He blinked and slowly knelt.
“It’s ok,” he whispered softly, holding a hand out to me. “I won’t hurt you.”
I froze; wondering what he was up to. No one was kind without wanting something. He continued to crouch in front of me, his hand held out. I wondered if he knew that he had me trapped, the trashcans on either side of me made effective barriers.
He watched me for a bit, then swung his pack over his shoulder and pulled out something. I wasn’t sure what it was, but it smelled good. He opened the small package and lay in on the ground before me. He shuffled backward and waited.
I stared at him, unsure what to make of his offering. This was entirely beyond my experience with people. Finally, my hunger overwhelmed my caution and I stepped forward. With
one eye on him, I snatched up the treat and devoured it.
I looked up as he smiled at me, the innocent expression taking years off of his face. In his dark eyes I saw something I hand never seen before, compassion.
He stood and walked away, but I followed. I’m not sure what prompted me to, I knew that the boy could become dangerous at any moment, but I wanted to repay his kindness. He seemed surprised to see me when he stopped and unlocked a small gray door at the end of the alleyway.
“Are you still hungry?” he asked.
I looked up at him, taking a tentative step forward, and he smiled again.
“Come in.” He stepped aside, holding the door open for me. We shared a small meal mostly in silence, and when I crawled onto the single bed after him. He didn’t complain.

I tested the air again, trying to see if the boy was still in the room. I didn’t feel his warmth, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t nearby. His sent, the sent of musty paper, gunpowder, metal, sweat, death, and a musky sent that was all his own, surrounded me, but I could tell he was no longer in the room. I stretched lazily with a huge yawn as I blinked sleepy eyes open. I was warm and the bed was soft, but a soft rumble in my stomach reminded me of why I had
awakened in the first place. I hopped out of bed and padded over to the partially open door, pressing it open a little wider so I could look down the short hall. I didn’t see him, but my ears told me his location and from the smells drifting to me, he was cooking breakfast.
My heart felt light as I trotted down the hall, whatever it was, I’m sure he would
share. I paused in the doorway to the kitchen, taking a moment to study my savior again. He wasn’t standing at the stove like I expected, although there was a pot on the stove. He was sitting at the rickety table reading a paper with his hair hanging loose around his shoulders wearing a loose pair of white pants.
He must have felt eyes on him because he looked up with a smile. “Good morning. Breakfast should be done soon.”
He stood and poured me some water, setting it down before me./p>
I drained it and looked up beseechingly at him. He laughed softly and poured me another drink. I slowly sipped this one, keeping an eye on him as he sat back down, flipping the page.
“It wasn’t so bad this time,” he murmured. “Not so many casualties.” He looked up at me, his eyes sad. “You don’t know what I’m talking about, do you?" He fell silent and folded the paper with a sigh.
His pain called out to me and I wanted to help him like he had helped me. I stepped around the table and looked up at him, trying to tell him without words that I was there for him. He smiled his sad smile and pulled me into his lap, holding me for a moment, letting down his guard.
The sound of the front door opening broke the silence and he tensed. He set me down and grabbed a nearby kitchen knife before slipping up to the doorway, moving almost as silently as I
do. He peered around the corner, muscles coiled tight to fight the intruder. Suddenly, he relaxed with a growl. “Maxwell, what are you doing here?”
“Wu?” A cheerful, bouncy voice responded in surprise. “I could ask you the same thing, but since you asked first, I was told to hide out here a little while.”
The boy who saved me frowned, and curiosity drove me forward. The other boy sounded friendly. I caught a whiff of gunpowder, death, metal, spice, and something that reminded me of a grassy lot I used to play in years ago.I crept toward the doorway as the boys kept talking.
“Breakfast is about done so drop your bags over there and come get some,” Wu said, turning
back toward the stove.

Duo blinked, staring down at the clear blue eyes staring up at him. “Hey Wu, when did you get a cat?”
