Soft, winds stirred and brushed the long grass just outside
the window. Trunks stared longingly at a pale yellow butterfly fluttering near
the few flowers that had just begun to bloom and stretch above the grass. The droning
of Capsule Corps division leaders had
infused Trunks with a sense of dull
lethargy and it took all of his strength to remain awake and feign attention.
Every now and again he would adjust his glasses and nod as if he were listening
attentively to every word. This wasn’t his idea of a great way to start the
day, but his mother had opted to begin this ritual of the morning breakfast
meeting
when she forfeited the position of
president to him, she wanted there to be a strong sense of communication between
Trunks and the company. In his opinion, all this achieved was a strong sense of
boredom for the president in question.
“—so the engineering department would like to request
permission to start the search for a few new designers, and the products division
obviously needs a new leader now that Jerry’s gone”
“Mmhmm, fine”, Trunks replied distantly and continued gazing
longingly out of the window.
“Well I guess we can start today, thank you Mr. Briefs.”

“Get up, get up, get up!” Dinnah watched her niece’s small
form curl up underneath her comforter and so she quickly snatched it off the
bed. “Hurry up; you don’t want to be late!” The now exposed, prone form
murmured something unintelligible and turned slightly before sliding its legs
over the edge of the bed and sitting up. Dinnah sank softly onto the bed as she
watched Airashii stand and begin shuffling towards the bathroom to start
getting washed up.
She glanced around the room, and sighed softly. After
fourteen years it was time to let go “Hurry up Aira, I laid out your outfit for
you.”
There was an irritated groan from the bathroom. “Something matronly no doubt.”
In reality it was a soft white silk blouse and a pair of
black slacks, but Dinnah replied tartly, “If you don’t hurry up, I’ll make sure
to get you a nice shawl and a floor length plaid skirt!”
**
“Ow, ow, ow, ow” Airashii grimaced as aunt Dinnah grabbed
her hair roughly and begin twisting and pinning it into an acceptable shape.
Considering the length of her hair and the heaviness of it, this was quite a
feat in itself and Airashii would have admired this if it hadn’t hurt so much.
Dinnah jabbed two decorative pins behind the bun and sat back and admired her
work.
“Are you done abusing me now? Aunt Dinnah?” Airashii gasped
softly as she felt the older woman’s arms around her, hugging her gently. “I
can’t believe I’m letting you go, I promised I never would you know…” Airashii
sighed, “I remember a little about that, and you’ve told me many times about
it. But keep in mind that you are the
one kicking me out.”
Dinnah smiled softly, “Well you’re ready to go, we’ve been
in this tiny house for fourteen years, it is beautiful here, but it’s about
time that you really experienced the world. I’ve educated you, fed you, housed
you, kept you safe, and hopefully given you the kind of life that will lead to
your independence. Plus I’m sure you’re tired of me—"
“Well not really—"
“Well I’m tired of you,” Dinnah grinned. “It’s time for you
to make your own way, you’ve got more than enough education, I’ve seen to that
and thusly, I release you onto the world.”
Airashii sighed, “But first you have to drag me by the ear
to some job interview.”
Dinnah stood up and began fixing her own clothes. “Well, I
hope you remember e tie times we’ve gone to the city.”
“Yes, they’ve been few and far in between.”
“Well, I know you remember those capsules people use to
contain things—"
“Well why would I want to work where they make those
things?”
“Because I know you’ll be taken care of, I’m not sure what you
can do, but they have employee housing so I don’t have to worry about you
looking for a home and being taken advantage of.”
Airashii sighed and shook her head in defeat, “You worry too
much.”
Dinnah kissed her niece’s forehead softly, “I’ll always worry
about you. Oh, Cressa would be so proud of you…but I’m rambling again and we
should really get going.” She discreetly brushed the gathering tears from her
eyes and ushered her niece through the door.
Airashii paused to look back at her tiny home on the hill,
with the miles of desolate fields surrounding it, the grass dancing, wave-like
with the strength of the winds. How do you leave a place that’s all you know
of, or all you care to know as home?

Airashii fidgeted and sighed plaintively as a secretary
explained the testing procedure for application to the engineering department,
again. The office was much more spacious than the outside of the building would
have suggested, however, it was stuffed with applicants.
“Now the tests will be based on basic concepts of
engineering as well as some common sense. The tests will obviously test on
different concepts and abilities based on the different positions you’re
applying for, you will all have an hour for the test, and they will be graded
immediately afterwards. Now just tell our director what position you’ll be
applying for and he’ll give you the correct test and point you towards the
testing room.”
Airashii glanced at the paper with the listing of available
positions. “Well it’s not as if I’m really trying to get this job…” She decided
to go for the reach position, ‘product
design and research (possible management)’. It had the most pay and was the
position she was least likely to get, so she informed the director of her
decision and was one of the first people in the room.
Exactly an hour and fifteen minutes later, she was waiting
outside of yet another office. The golden plaque with black letters that hung
over the door stated that it was the human resources department and the smaller
one below it declared that this office in particular belonged to Bulma Briefs.
Airashii was waved in and sat in front of a large mahogany
desk which was placed in front of an even larger window that opened up a view
of the bustling city. The woman who sat behind it greeted her with a warm
smile. She was older with an unnatural shade of blue in her hair. She began
cheerily, “Well, could I get your full name please?”
Airashii smiled a little shyly and responded, “Airashii.”
Bulma blinked and smiled
quizzically, “Last name please?”
Airashii blinked as well, “I suppose I don’t really have
one.”
Bulma smiled, a little confused,
“Well don’t your parents—"
Airashii brushed an errant strand of hair out of her eyes and
sighed, “My parents are dead, and as far as I know, I’ve never had a last
name.”
Bulma blushed softly and shuffled
her papers nervously, “Ah, next question then; Where did you attend school?”
“I’ve…been home schooled all my life.”
Bulma flipped through the
information on her desk again and she spoke softly, “Well I don’t know if
you’re right for this—oh, my.”
Airashii blushed softly along her cheeks and attempted to
clarify, “Well I have all my equivalency tests and diplomas if that’s what you
mean.”
Bulma scratched her head and
smiled, “No, well, I’m looking at your test results and they really are
amazing, now where exactly did you come from? The people we have in charge now
don’t even have test scores this high.”
A small blush danced over the bridge
of Airashii’s nose, “Well my aunt has taught me for most of my life,
and she’s made sure I took various qualifying tests and things, but that’s
mainly it. I’ve lived in that little house on the hill for a majority of my
life. I’ve barely ever even seen the city, but I know I’m capable of doing
whatever work you could ask of me.”
Bulma rose slowly from her seat
and extended her hand to Airashii, who also stood. “Well I don’t have the final
say in making this decision, so I’ll have to bring you to my son Trunks, I
mean, the president of Capsule Corp. He’s supposed to approve the leaders of
the departments personally.”
Airashii didn’t have time to question why this woman’s son
was the president of the company and yet she was working as head of the human resources
department before Bulma had a friendly arm around her
shoulder and was ushering her out of the office and back into the hallway.
***
Bulma noticed that Airashii seemed
to tense up once they left the office, so she chattered away, trying to make her
comfortable. It seemed to work, Airashii became more animated as she spoke of
her aunt and her education experience. A few feet away from the elevator, a
rather large man, Howard out of sales, he was always rushing somewhere and
acted as if the sky were always falling down around his head. It was people
like him that made Bulma want to retire. She, like
everyone else in the hall tried to swerve out of his way, but he still somehow
managed to crash into Airashii, with his face firmly planted in her bosom.
Airashii’s cheeks glowed brightly
in embarrassment, while her fists clenched at her sides. In an instant, she
brought her knee up and rammed it into his stomach, as soon as he recoiled in
pain; she kicked effortlessly planted her foot in his gut and sent him
careening back through the hallway the way he came. Bulma
gaped openly as Airashii began smoothing out her blouse.
This girl could only barely be a quarter of what that man
weighed and she almost literally sent him flying through the hallway. She’s
only ever seen that kind of strength from a few people in her life, but what
she was thinking was impossible.
“Well, the elevator is this way, and Trunks awaits,” She smiled and continued leading Airashii toward
and into the elevator. The hallway remained silent even as the silver doors
closed on the pair, and the bystanders gaped and gawked after the raven haired
girl.
