A Love Beyond All Measure
Concentrating on the avoiding the idiots amongst the traffic, Heero headed towards the Peacecraft place. He had to see Relena about the reunion they\'d organised for the Gundam pilots.
It had been a year since they had seen each other and Heero was looking forward to seeing some of his old friends.
As he went to turn around the corner a few streets away from the Peacecraft\'s street, he slammed on the brakes. It was all he could do to stop himself from hitting the youth in front of him who had literally staggered onto the road.
He somehow managed to swerve and just tip the boy on the backside knocking him to the floor.
Heero stopped the car and got out approaching the boy with a few things more to say besides asking him if he was all right.
He reached the young man who was face down and groaning a little and placed a hand on his shoulder. \"Are you alright? What the hell were you thinking? Didn\'t any one ever teach you to look out for traffic?\"
The young man slowly lifted himself onto his arms, \"You\'re the one who hit me,Ehis voice was a little edgy and slurred and as he stood he flicked a long braid of hair behind him sending it thwapping into Heero\'s face...
\"Hey!!\" Heero snapped, \"Watch what youre doing would you, gees you\'re a pretty reckless kinda guy!!\" he sighed as the young man dusted himself off.
\"It\'s good to see you haven\'t changed either Heero Yuy. \"The other boy stated as he finally turned to show his face, his Violet eyes piercing the other boys blue ones.
Heero stood back a little, surprised at the sound of his own name...he stared hard at the boy in front of him.\" D, D, Duo Maxwell?\" He exclaimed questioningly.
\"In the flesh Yuy!\"
Heero shook his head in disbelief if this was Duo *and it did look like him except, a lot more ragged and ruffed up around the edges*, the shine in his eyes and the mischievousness that used to dance about him so much, were no longer prominent and his face was pale and drawn. He looked malnourished and definitely not the same Duo Maxwell that Heero used to know.
\"Shit Maxwell, what the hell have you done to yourself over the past year?\"
\ wan wanna move you car Yuy. People are trying to get past it.EThe other boy said nodding at Heero\'s car. Ignoring the question. \" I think the natives are gettin\' restless.\"
Heero grabbed Duo by the arm, \"Fine but you\'re getting in too Maxwell!EHe dragged the protesting boy into the car slamming the door behind him.
\"Why? What the hell for?EDuo spat...\"Jesus Christ Heero I don\'t see you for a year and you start acting like a jerk!\"
Heero got back into the drivers side of the car and strapped himself in. \"Do your seat belt up Maxwell\"
The violet eyed boy glared at Heero almost as if daring to make him try and do the belt up and so Heero took up the challenge and struggled with Duo to get the belt done up.
Duo sighed and gave up in the end letting Heero do the belt up. He knew his old friend wouldn\'t give up that easily and it would be better to let it be done now than to put up with a ton of monotoned lectures later.
\"You happy now?\" Duo spat as Heero started the car up again.
\"I wanna know what\'s going on with you Duo. I know you and this is not you!Ehe said moving the car over to the kerb.
Duo sat quietly biting his lip. \"Nothing\'s going on with me. Im fine!\" The braided boy retorted soundly.
\"Don\'t lie to me Maxwell. I want to know the truth.... so start talking?\"
\"Weren\'t you going to see your girlfriend, She lives around here doesn\'t she? I mean that\'s why youre in this part of town.EDuo mocked...
Heero glared at him coldly.EDont ever say that again she\'s not my girlfriend, I don\'t love ~her~ despite what everyone seems to think!\"
\"Oh that\'s right ...I forgot. Heero Yuy, the perfect soldier. You wouldn\'t know what love was even it if hit you in the face.\"
\"Shut up. I\'ve left that behind. I never want to hear that again either. \"He sighed quietly to himself.
Duo wondered if the words he\'d just spoken had been a little too harsh. Heero had gone too quiet for his liking and it actually worried him...
\"Heero. I er I\'m sorry I didn\'t mean to s~~~\"
\"It\'s alright. \"He reassured his old friend, \"I guess I should take you home then.\"
Duo opened his mouth to protest politely but Heero smiled at him and it wasn\'t often that he\'d ever seen Heero smile.
\"It\'s the least I can do after knocking you down and besides you\'re really in no fit state to be out on your own. Ex Gundam polite or not.\"
The braided boy went silent not knowing what to say. He was too ashamed of himself to tell Heero the truth about his poor excuse for a life that he now led...He lowered his head a sad look spreading across his face.
Heero smiled again and put a hand on Duo\'s shoulder.\" Duo. What\'s happened to you? What are you so afraid of that you can\'t tell me?E
Duo remained silent for a moment a thousand and one things running through his head at once. Then slowly he looked over at the blue-eyed boy. A tear slowly streaming down his cheek and a pleaful tone in his voice.
\"Heero, Please! Help me!\"
