Hangover
The room filled with the rich, heavy smell of coffee as it dripped into the pot below. Hilde smiled. The coffee maker was an old one, ancient by most standards, but it still worked...with a little love.
She turned back to the small stove of the kitchenette and pushed three sizzling eggs around in a skillet with a wooden spoon. She began to hum to herself as she worked, knowing that the strong aromas of food and coffee would eventually wake her sleeping companion.
Hilde went over a mental checklist of all the things she needed to do that day. Along with finishing the paperwork from the previous week, there was trash all over the living room from last night’s party. She cringed at the amount of beer bottles, cans, napkins, cups, and other assorted trash she was going to have to pick up. Duo might help with the cleaning part, but she would die before she let him near the ledgers.
Duo. Thinking of the American pilot brought a brief smile to her lips. After the war had ended five years ago, Hilde had kept herself so busy running the business end of their store that she hadn’t noticed how Duo had grown on her. They laughed, talked...cried. She’d been there for him when his nightmares caused him to wake up screaming in the middle of the night. He’d been there for her through two horrible breakups that had left her weak and vulnerable. He was her best friend. But was she really ready for more...?
**I shouldn’t have let him get so drunk last night**, she thought. She shrugged and tried to suppress the smile that was creeping onto her lips as she remembered the events that had unfolded in Duo’s impaired state.
A hung over Duo chose that moment to stumble into the small kitchen area, drawn by the sent of strong coffee. Hilde examined him critically. He was clad only in his black pants from the night before, crumpled and creased from spending a night on the floor. His top button was undone. Obviously he hadn’t been awake enough to button it. His usually immaculately braded hair was coming loose and messy. His eyes were dark and blood shot and squinting at Hilde, trying to make out her shape in the bright light of the kitchenette. He put a hand to his throbbing head and attempted to steady himself against the doorframe, closing his eyes tightly against the light.
“Welcome back to the land of the living.”
Duo cracked open one eye to see a hot mug filled with black coffee under his nose. He looked up at Hilde who was smiling, albeit with a scolding, yet humorous, look. He smiled sheepishly and took the cup.
“Thanks,” he said before taking a sip. His own voice sounded too loud, as if he were shouting in his own ears. He shuffled over to the small table and sat down in his usual seat. A plate of two eggs instantly appeared in front of him and he blinked at it.
“Eat it,” came the command from the kitchen.
He grinned, some of his old humor returning. “Why, Hilde, I didn’t know you cared.”
“I don’t,” she said plopping down beside him in a chair, a plate containing one egg in her hand. “But you have to help me clean house today and it takes you longer to get things done on an empty stomach.” She took a bit of egg and smiled sweetly him.
As he ate, Duo tried to remember exactly what all had happened the night before. It was hard to recall it all; his mind was still fuzzy from his hangover.
**Okay**, he said, making a mental checklist, **I remember getting in an arm wrestling match with Heero and I remember loosing...ouch... I remember spiking Quatra’s drink; I remember him and Dorothy going off together-eww. I remember Cathy and Relena singing some drinking song, and Trowa laughing at some joke Wufei told...hm... Who knew Wu-man could actually be funny when he was drunk? Hell, for that matter, who knew Trowa knew how to laugh? I remember Hilde helping me into the bedroom after everyone left and...Oh shit.**
Duo stopped chewing. Yes, he remembered now. Hilde had helped him into his bedroom after everyone had left because he couldn’t walk straight. He’d fallen down on the bed and she’d fallen with him. And then he’d leaned over and...
Duo slowly raised his head to look at Hilde. She was looking at her plate, playing with her fork as she thoughtfully chewed the last of her egg. A bit of midnight hair had fallen over her eyes and she pushed it back with her free hand. When she got up to put her plate in the kitchen, Duo looked back at his plate.
He and Hilde had had sex last night. It could hardly be called “making love”, considering the drunken stupor the God of Death had been in. But they’d defiantly done it. And, if Duo remembered right, they’d both enjoyed it...a lot.
**Oh, man! I’ve really messed up this time! How am I ever going to make this right with her?**
But with a second look at Hilde as she washed the dishes, her back to him, a thought occurred to him. Maybe she didn’t remember last night. After all, she’d been drinking last night too. But then, Hilde’d always been better at holding her liquor than Duo had, and it always took a lot more to get the little pixie as drunk as he’d been last night.
But if she hadn’t been drunk, why hadn’t she said anything about it?
After careful consideration, which consisted of total panic and fuzzy logic on Duo’s part, the still hung over pilot decided that the best course of action was to pretend that last night had never happened...and beg her forgiveness.
He picked up his plate and headed into the kitchen, his plan firmly set in mind. He set the plate next to Hilde on the counter. He stepped back, leaning against the counter behind him, and watched her for a few minutes before proceeding with Operation Memory-Loss.
He cleared his throat. “Um...Hilde?”
“Yah?” she asked, not turning around.
“I uh...wanted to apologize for uh...anything I might have said or done last night that might have been um...bad.” He waited, bracing himself as if he expected her to start throwing soapy dishes at him in a rage.
Hilde smiled to herself. She didn’t expect Duo to remember last night, which was fine with her. She wasn’t about to remind him and risk ruining their friendship. Besides, she wanted to keep the memory for herself.
“Don’t worry, Duo,” she reassured him after a pause, her voice light. “You didn’t do anything I wouldn’t have let you do otherwise.” It wasn’t a lie, she realized with a hint of satisfaction.
“No, Hilde, really. I’m really, really, sorry about last night. I-”
He stopped as Hilde turned around to face him. She didn’t look mad. In fact, she looked...amused. She smiled at him reassuringly sweet, willing him to understand that there was no reason for him to be so sorry.
“Duo, really, there’s no reason to be sorry. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
He half-smiled, not convinced, although he wasn’t going to say so. “Thanks, Hilde,” he said softly. But just to make sure, “Are you sure I didn’t-”
“Duo!”
He stopped, his humor returning at the exasperated look on her face.
“If you don’t stop apologizing for stuff you didn’t do, I’m going to make you sorry. Now go in the living room and start cleaning up.”
He grinned. “Yes, ma’am.”

Neither one of them said anything else about it the rest of the week. The “incident\" as Duo had begun to refer to it in his mind with mock humor, had seemingly never happened, a thought that, for some reason, didn’t sit well with the braided pilot. He still remembered bits and pieces of that night with Hilde, and every time he saw her, they flashed in his mind. As crazy as it sounded, Duo began to want Hilde to remember.
He’d also began to want other things. Like for it to happen again. He wanted to run his hands through her hair and feel how soft it was. He wanted to hear her moan his name as he made her come. He wanted to kiss every inch of her body as she lay under him in his bed. He wanted her to writhe and seethe with passion as he buried himself within her again and again. He wanted to lay with her, to hold and caress her, to whisper words of passion and love in her ear and hear her whisper those words to him.
He didn’t know when exactly it had happened. He didn’t remember falling for Hilde. She’d just crept into his heart when he wasn’t paying attention. She’d wrapped herself around his heart and warmed it with her love.
As the weekend and the party they had planned with all their friends drew nearer, Duo became more and more determined for a repeat of the last one. His plan was simple: pretend to get really drunk, have Hilde help him to bed, and make sure she remembered everything. It was lame, and he knew it. But was there an easier way to seduce your best friend that you’d fallen in love with? Duo didn’t think so.
The night of the party, everyone was drinking. Duo had managed to spike Quatra’s drink once again, and the blond pilot was in the process of trying to explain to Trowa the beauty and complex nature of the couch. Wufei and Sally were making out beside them while Catherine was trying to take away Trowa’s drink, obviously deciding that a drunk Trowa was just too weird. Heero and Relena, who had managed to have three drinks apiece at some point, sat together on the love seat. Heero’s hand was gently massaging Relena’s knee as he whispered into her ear, making her blush six shades of red.
Duo and Hilde floated around the room from group to group making conversation. Duo made sure to appear as though he was drinking as much as everyone else and managed to have a new drink in his hand each time Hilde saw him. Hilde, on the other hand, had only one glass of red wine at the start of the party and hadn’t touched a drink after.
**Good**, Duo decided. He was still fully intent on his plan, and needed Hilde to be totally aware of everything that was happening if it were going to work.
Around midnight they decided to watch a bad Sci-Fi flick, after which everyone decided to go home. Duo and Hilde waved goodbye to Dorothy and Quatra as the couple drove off in a taxi. Duo’s arm had been resting around Hilde’s shoulder, and he instantly collapsed when the taxi was out of sight.
Hilde grunted under the weight, but managed to steady him. “Common, Duo,” she said, leading him back into the house. “Let’s get you to bed.”
With not much help from him, she led him to his room. Her hand paused at the light switch, debating whether or to turn it on. Her hand fell to her side and she continued to drag the half-conscious pilot to the bed, deciding that bright lights were not what he needed right now. She sat him down on the bed and stood in front of him.
She shook her head, at the sight he made. His black shirt was untucked on his left side, the fabric rumpled and out of place. He wasn’t wearing any shoes and had only one sock. His bangs were rumpled and fell over his eyes.
She sighed. “You sure have made a mess of yourself tonight, Duo,” she said.
She bent down and removed his one sock, tossing it over her shoulder before straightening herself again. She unzipped his black jacket. Duo, trying to help she supposed, thrust his arms backward to make it easier to slide the jacket off. She leaned forward, trying to take the jacket off. This, however, pushed her right up against Duo’s chest. Careening her neck to the side so she could see behind him, she felt something soft touch her neck.
Not more than a pause followed before she felt it again. This time it was firmer and...wet. With a slight flutter in her stomach, she realized that Duo was kissing her neck. She was tempted to let him continue, too. After all, she’s sampled what his mouth could do...
But instead, she pulled back, bringing the black jacket with her. She tossed it on the floor by his feet and grabbed for the zipper of his sleeveless red turtleneck. She quickly unzipped the garment and sent it the same way as his jacket. She took a step back and put her hands on her hips.
“Okay, Duo,” she said, “stand up.”
He stood. It would have been graceful if he hadn’t wavered once he was fully on his feet. She sighed and stepped closer to him. Expertly, she went to work on the button and fly of his black pants. She became aware as she worked on the stubborn fly of the heat radiating from Duo’s body. He smelled good too, not like the liquor he’d been drinking, but a fresh, clean, and distinctly male sent. A blush spread over her entire body, creating a heat of its own. She was thankful that the lights were off and that Duo was too drunk to care.
She slid his pants down around his ankles and instructed him to step out of them, which he did evenly. She stood again and moved around him to the bed. She arranged the two large pillows he had so that he would be comfortable when he finally laid down to sleep and pulled the thick comforter back.
She turned, her mouth open ready to talk, but was stopped when Duo’s eager mouth found hers.
At first, Hilde was too surprised to do anything except stand there. But as his mouth began to work on hers, she began to respond. He tasted sweet and faintly like the wine she’d had earlier. She felt his hands working at the top three buttons of her blouse. Funny how she hadn’t even realized the bottom three had come undone. And his boxer shorts had disappeared somewhere along the way as well.
Hilde sucked in a breath when Duo’s large hands slipped around under her shirt to her bare back and held her there, pressing her to him. She moaned softly as she felt him pressing against her stomach, already large with need. He moved slightly and her blouse fell to the floor behind her. Not being able to stop herself, she slipped her arms around his neck, returning his feverish kiss.
Duo’s hands moved lower to her jeans, first passing over her buttocks and then moving to the front where he began to undo them. His mouth moved from hers and began tracing a trail to her neck, pressing heated kisses behind her ear and then sucking on her collarbone.
“Duo,” she whispered. Her own voice sounded hoarse to her ears. “I don’t think-”
And then she couldn’t think as Duo lifted her up and her pants fell free to the floor all in one moment. She moaned as he laid her on the bed and continued to move down her body with his mouth. Her bra came undone in the back and she barely noticed as it joined her jeans and blouse on the floor. By this time his mouth had reached her breast, and his tongue began to play with the hardened nipple of her left breast while his left hand kneaded the other.
She arched toward him and moaned once more. “Oh.” Her voice was laced with regret. “Why can’t you be this way when you’re sober?”
“But I’m not drunk, Hilde.”
Her eyes shot open. Duo’s mouth was gone from her breast. She looked down to see him staring up at her, his violet eyes dark with passion but still clear as though he hadn’t had anything to drink tonight at all.
“W-what?” she stammered.
“I haven’t had anything to drink tonight, Hilde,” Duo said huskily. He grinned and Hilde briefly noticed his hand move from the bed beside her lower. “But I’m going to fix that.”
Hilde jerked as she felt his fingers at her opening, stroking her already wet passage gently. She watched him lower his head back down to her breast before closing her eyes. She began to relax and allow herself to enjoy what Duo was doing.
Duo’s heart was racing. She was so wet and yielding he could barely stand it. She was responding to every move he made, and the small noises she was making were beginning to make him burn with need. He was already so hard. But he had to go slowly, he reminded himself. He wanted her to remember every last detail.
Hilde groaned in protest when he moved his mouth away. He continued his downward assault, leaving a hot trail of kisses in his wake. He slowly raised her knees to give himself better access to his goal. The dark curls were glistening from moisture and her lips were swollen and burning red from his earlier torment using his fingers.
He smiled and kissed her there. Hilde drew in a sharp breath, but Duo didn’t stop. He played with her, using his mouth this time. Sucking and nibbling, he made her groan and she pushed against his mouth, wanting more. He was all too happy to oblige. He pushed his tongue inside her, hearing her gasp. He withdrew partway and then pushed inside again. He repeated the action over and over again. Hilde followed his rhythm, her breath coming in quick, short breaths, until finally she cried out as her body was racked with waves of pleasure.
She lay there gasping, trying to catch her breath. She could still feel Duo licking at her making small warm waves with his tongue. He kissed her one last time and then kissed her adjacent thigh.
“Oi, Hilde,” he said, pressing small, delicate kisses to her inner thigh while he ran a hand up and down her leg, “I didn’t know you’d taste so good. Mmm.”
She looked down at him and his eyes locked with hers. He crawled slowly up her body, stopping to kiss her stomach, breasts, and neck on his way up. Hilde could feel the heat building again in her body. Putting a hand on each side to brace himself, Duo slowly let all his weight onto her small body. He caught her mouth in a toe-curling kiss as he used his legs to spread hers even wider.
She groaned with pleasure as she felt the tip of him against her opening and moved her hips slightly, encouraging him and telling him she was ready. He continued kissing her as he slowly entered her. A deep moan escaped his throat as he filled her. She adjusted her hips to take in as much of him as she could. He was so big, filling all of her, and so hot it nearly burned through her.
He stayed there for a moment, letting her become adjusted to his weight and to the feel of him inside her while he explored her mouth. He let go of her mouth and moved to her neck, pressing soft kisses on her hot skin. He pulled almost completely out of her before easing back in. She groaned. He smiled.
“I want you to remember everything this time, Hilde,” he whispered huskily in her ear. He slid partway out of her and plunged back in. “Everything.”
“Oh, god, Duo,” she moaned. “Yes!”
She followed his rhythm easily, moving her hips up and down along with him. Their pace quickened, growing faster and hotter as their hips moved. They began to sweat as their bodies moved against each other’s. Their breathing was heavy and short and Hilde dug her nails into Duo’s back. He crushed her tighter to him, trying to burry himself deeper each time.
Hilde screamed and Duo roared as they both climaxed at the same time in an earth shattering orgasm that left them both weak and trembling in the end.
Duo lifted his head and smiled tenderly down at Hilde who was still trying to catch her breath. He wiped a few beads of sweat away from her forehead with his thumb and kissed her gently. He slowly pulled out of her, causing her to gasp slightly. Duo rolled over, pulling Hilde with him and held her tightly to him. She smiled against his chest and kissed it lightly before laying her head back down and resting a hand below his left nipple.
“That,” she said with a light chuckle, “was unforgettable.”
“No,” Duo said stroking her hair. “You are unforgettable.”
Hilde looked up at her lover, a confused frown on her face. She slowly crawled up and kissed him with all the love she didn’t know she had for him. And he kissed her back with that same love he felt for her.
She sat up and looked down critically at him. “You planned this whole thing, didn’t you?”
He smiled his old smile. “Well, the getting you in here part was planned. I was just kind of making the rest up as I went along.”
Duo’s hand caught her hip and began to move slowly up and over her abdomen. Hilde’s breath caught and her skin flushed, the sensations causing her nipples to harden. He grinned at the reaction he’d been able to get so easily from her. Sitting up himself, his mouth found the sensitive spot on her neck while his hands continued their assault.
“That reminds me,” he said against her neck, “of a few other...” his hand found that sensitive place between her legs and she arched forward “...things I’d like to show you.”
“Oh, really?” she said, her voice shaking.
“Um hum.” He nodded against her neck. “I intend to hear you cry out like that several more times tonight, Hilde.”
He licked her hot skin, making Hilde shiver in anticipation of all the “things” he wanted to show her.
