hey! I got this idea at work.... they were playing 70's /80's this morning and I heard this song and this came to me
Warning: actually none... it's au... days of sailing ships and stuff like that...

I don't own Gw or any of the charaters and I do not own the song......I did change the lyrics a little bit...... I took some liberties with the idea of the song too......

You're a fine girl

There's a port on a western bay

and it serves a hundred ships a day

Lonely sailors past the time away

and talk about their homes

The ships were docked sided by side. Several sailors disembarked form each one. They made their way to different pubs and bars along the shore side. They each had their favorite place to go.

The most popular place was the Rusty Nail. It was a warm cosy place and the people were friendly. A lonely sailor could all ways find someone willing to talk the hours away till they had to leave.

And there's a girl in this harbor town

And she works layin' whisky down

They say "Hilde" fetch anotheoundound

She serves them whisky and wine.

Hilde hurried over to the latest group of sailors and took their orders. She rushed back to the bar and repeated to the bar tender who filled it. She leaned against the 7 foot wooden bar and brushed the hair off her forehead and sighed.

"It's busy today."

"Yes," she replied to him as he slid the drinks to her. "Much too busy. I wonder...."

Her thought was interrupted when an other group of sailors burst into the bar. Several of them spied her and yelled to her.

She shook her head and smiled.

She delivered the drinks to the table and was about to leave when one grabbed her arm.

"Hey, Hilde girl. What are we gonna do when you run off and get married?"

She looked at him with a funny look, then said. "Not to worry ,Jonas. I'll not be getting married any time soon."

"You are a fine girl and someone will sweep you off your feet."

She just smiled and collected her payment from them. She knew what they all ment and she was flattered.

The sailors say "Hilde, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)

What a good wife you will be(such a fine girl)

Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

The door opened once more and in stepped another man. Captain Heero Yuy strolled into the bar and looked around. Several of the sailors stood up, but he waved them down. He glanced around once more and say Hilde, talking to several men. He walked up to her and grabbed her arm.

"Captain Maxwell been in here yet?" He asked gruffly.

She looked up at the man who clutched her arm and smiled." Captain Yuy! No I haven't seen him yet. Would you like something to ..."

"My usual. Then come to my table."

She nodded and went to fetch his tankard of beer. She daydreamed a little as she hurried to his beer. Her fingers subconsciencly reached for the chain around her neck. She smiled at the thought of the handsome man who had captured her heart. Her fingertips gently rubbed across the locket with his name engraved on it.

Hilde wears a braided chain

Made of finest silver from the north of Spain

A locket that bares the name

of the man she loves

She sighed as she remembered him coming into the bar. He had brought her these gifts , but explained he couldn't stay. He had many more adventures to do before he could let himself settle down if he ever did. It didn't matter. She would wait for him forever, if need be.

He came on a summer's day

bringin gifts from far away

but he made it clear he couldn't stay

No harbor was his home
the sailor said "Hilde you're a fine girl (your a fine girl)

"what a good wife you would be" (Such a fine girl)

"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

She brought the tankard to Heero's table and slid up next to him. He smiled at her and patted her hand.

"You know someday he will choose you, don't you?"

She looked at the table and blinked. She didn't want to cry in front of him and everyone. She took a deep breath and looked up. The door of the bar burst open once again and in walked the one she loved.

She smiled as he walked to the table she and Heero were at.

He sat beside her and smiled. She felt her heart melt as she watched him. He told of his adventures on the high sea. Heero grinned and wondered how much was added in, but said nothing. He watched Hilde's face as she was spell bound by his tales.

Yeah, Hilde used to watch his eyes

When he told his sailor stories

She could feel the ocean foam rise

She saw it's ragin' glory

She stood and went to get him and Heero another tankard of beer. Duo smiled at her as she left the table. He looked over at Heero,

"So, Yuy, what were you doin' with my girl?"

"Your girl?" He asked as he looked over his empty cup. "Sence when did she become your girl."

"Sense she fell in love with me."

"How long do you think she wait for you to get the salt water out of your veins?"

"Long enough, I hope."

Heero cocked an eyebrow at him. He smirked . He's starting to fall for her. "Mr. no harbor is my home."

Hilde brought the beers to them and started to turn away.

Duo grabbed her arm and pulled her to him.

She looked at him and whispered to him. "Please come home with me."

He shook his head and smiled at her. "You know I can't do that, Hilde. I want to but I can't."

She nodded and turned away.

Heero stared at him. "Are you crazy?"

Duo shook his head. "No one night stands for her. I 'll wait till I can be with her forever." He watched her slip into the back room. "I hope she understands."

"Maybe you should tell her."

Duo looked at Heero then at the curtained room. He stood and leaned over the table. "Maybe I will."

He walked across the room and pushed open e curtain.

Heero smiled and watched the curtain close behind the braided man.

But he had always told the truth , lord he was an honest man

And Hilde does her best to understand

She looked up as the curtain opened .

"Oh!" She said as her hands slp top to wipe off her tears. She turned away from him. "Sorry."

"Hilde."

He came to her and pulled her to him.

""You know I love you, but the sea is..."

"I know." She sniffed ." I understand."

"Do you really? Will you wait? Could you?"

She looked at the floor and said nothing. He tilted up her chin. "There are so many adventures out there waiting for me."

She nodded ." I know I can't hold you. I'm just not...."

He frowned., realizing what she was trying to say.

"NO! NO,. that's not it at all." He slid his hand a long her jaw bone, letting his hand rest at the base of her neck, pulling her face to him. He kissed her lips and held her to him.

"I can wait." She whispered. "I love you, Duo, even if you don't love me. That's why I asked you to come home with me."

He shook his head. "No. I won't."

She sighed. " I know.... I understand." She looked at the floor and tried to wiggle out of his arms.

He held her tighter. "Please understand, Hilde."

She allowed him to embrace her and said. "I do. I really do l. can't hold you. The sea is your true love. I know... but I can wish that some day you will be mine even though it may not happen."

He kissed her once more and let her up. She straighten her skirt and smiled.

"Will I see you next time you come to port?" She asked looking into his face.

He grinned ."Why wouldn't I see my best girl?" He reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver ring and placed it in her hand. "TO remember me till I return."

She nodded and started to slip it on her right hand.

"No. This one." He said as he took the ring and slipped it on her left ring finger.

"Oh."

He left after that as Hilde stared at the ring on her finger, wondering what it ment.

At night when the bars close down

Hilde walks thought a silent town

and loves a man who's not around

She can still hear him say

Hilde walked to her little house at the other end of the town. The street lamps glowed softly. She looked up at the stars and found the north star. She smiled knowing he would be using it to navigate his ship. She said a silent prayer as she looked up at it. She prayed he would return soon, even if it nothing more that for her to see his face once more. She looked away and blinked , then walked to her little house and entered it.

On the open sea,
Duo stood at the great wheel and let the ocean breeze blow around him. He gazed up at the night sky and located the north star. He smiled as he thought of a beautiful raven haired girl.

"Soon, Hilde, someday soon."

His words echoed through his and her heads :

Hilde you're a fine girl

What a good wife you would be

But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea.....

At least for now, He thought as he turned the wheel and headed the ship into the dark recesses of the night and new adventures. But she was always in the back of his mind.
