Stargazing
Damn it, slow down! Goten cursed under his breath as he scrambled up to pursue the elusive shadow of the Saiyajin Prince without drawing his notice.
At least the fast pace had warmed him up. Though the night was not cold, a slight chill had settled into Goten’s flesh as he waited in the shadows of Capsule Corp to see if Vegeta would venture out for the night.
Just when he’s been about to abandon his vigil and fly home in disgust, he had caught sight of Vegeta’s lithe profile against one of the lighted windows. Immediately his heart had begun to race and once again he doubted the wisdom of his plan.
But some compulsion, as irresistible as it was foolhardy had pulled him along in the prince’s wake. Toward the hill, and whatever awaited him there. Goten was determined to find out what drew Vegeta here, night after night.
“Whoooo?” Challenged a ghostly voice from above him.
Goten stifled a shudder as he realized it was only an owl. Then he felt the swift darting movements of a bat as it flew close to his head. He shook once again, this time in disgust. He hated bats. They revolted him. Of course there was no reason to be frightened, he was a Super Saiyajin, nothing out here could hurt him. Normally he would relish a walk down this wooded path in the daylight, serenaded by birds and drinking in the lush scenery. But the coming of night seemed to work a dark enchantment on his familiar, beloved countryside. Goten shivered; though he was no longer cold.
As he stopped for a moment to catch his breath, he strained to listen for the sound of Vegeta’s footsteps ahead of him. All he heard was the phantom whisper of the night wind through the leaves.
Damn! While he had been jumping at every noise and shrinking from every shadow, Vegeta must have gained a huge lead on him. He hurried forward, hoping to close the gap between them.
He had only taken a few steps when a shadow of solid substance blocked his path. The menacing form seized him in a powerful grip.
“Brat? Why are you following me?” Vegeta’s resonant voice cleaved the night air.
The knowledge that it was only Vegeta did nothing to calm Goten’s shivering reaction. After all the man sent a thrill through him even by daylight. On a deserted path, late at night it was difficult to dismiss Vegeta’s once sinister reputation.
“I’m trying to find out what your doing out here.” Goten couldn’t believe he had just blurted that out. Couldn’t he have even tried to think up something, anything to cover up his actions?
Vegeta’s grip on him slackened and the deep voice dropped to an eerie whisper. “What do you think I do here at night?”
“I...don’t know.”
“Are you sure you want to find out?”
“Yes.”
Vegeta grabbed Goten’s upper arm and pushed the younger man towards the crest of the hill. “Then come along, boy.”
A tall structure rose above them, blotting out the faint flicker of the stars.
“Don’t move.” Vegeta ordered as he let him go.
Though Vegeta had expected no answer but compliance, one floated out of the darkness-tremulous yet quietly defiant. “If I’d wanted to leave, I would have done it before now. What is this place? I had no idea there was a building here.”
“It’s an old observation tower.”
Pushing open the door Vegeta reached for a candle that rested on the narrow ledge there. With a practice motion he lit it, sending shadows dancing over the curved stone wall and winding stair that clung to it.
Goten stepped over the doorsill, a light fluttering sound could be heard and he stared around him in obvious alarm. Perhaps he’d finally come to his senses at last and begun to cultivate a healthy fear of him, Vegeta thought contemptuously.
“Are there any bats?” Goten grasped Vegeta’s arm and drew closer to him, as if for protection.
Bats! The fool was more worried about some insignificant winged rodent than about being alone at night in a desolate spot with a man of his murderous reputation.
Vegeta couldn’t decide whether to curse... or laugh.
“A few. Not that they could harm you.”
Goten shuddered. “I hate bats!”
“They’re no worse than mice.” Holding the candle high, Vegeta nudged the demi-saiyajin towards the stairs. “Bats just have a more menacing reputation.”
Two steps forward, Goten came to an abrupt stop and turned back to him. “You should know all about that.” A glint of mischief danced in Goten’s eyes as he leant forward and smirked. Vegeta could not mistake it because they were standing nose to nose, with barely a breath between them. It was everything Vegeta could do to keep from dropping the candle and seizing the younger man.
Goten could become a serious threat to his self-control.
Vegeta shoved past him and headed for the set of stairs that clung to the opposite wall. “Come this way.” For no good reason, a sense of anticipation brewed within him at the prospect of sharing his secret passion with Goten. For the first time in years of climbing the steep narrow stairs a wave of vertigo threatened Vegeta. Ignoring it he pushed open another door at the top and waited as Goten followed him through. The candle flickered in the slight breeze that blew through the open door, casting long shadows over the equipment that stood in front of the large window opening. There, pointed at the nighttime sky, were two high powered telescopes. A sudden gust of wind extinguished the candle.
Vegeta aura ignited around him. He usually kept it suppressed while he was here, that was the reason for the candle. But it didn’t matter; the boy already knew and soon so would the others. Maybe he could find another place.
“I’ve indulged your curiosity enough for one night, Brat.” His voice was cold, with the faint echo of mockery.” Besides, it’s probably long past your bedtime.”
Goten ignored the other man as he walked closer to the two telescopes. Seating himself in one of the chairs he leant forward and peered through the lens. “Why astronomy, Vegeta?”
“Can you think of a better occupation for a former planet purger?”
“Ah...I suppose not. Do you miss it so much?”
Vegeta sat in the chair beside him, reaching to adjust the telescope in front of Goten. “Purging no... Space yes. Now look.”
Not certain what to expect, Goten leaned toward the eyepiece and peered into it.
“Oh wow, it’s...”
“It’s Saturn.”
“I know what it is.” He’d read about the distant planet and seen pictures but none of that was like seeing it for himself. “I was trying to find a word to describe it.”
Vegeta seemed on the verge of saying something, but he stopped himself.
“Would you like to see a falling star?” He asked instead.
“Can I?”
Goten felt him nod as he leaned past him to adjust the angle of the telescope. “With a little luck.”
“I’ve never considered myself lucky like Dad.” Then why did it feel like good fortune to be here, with Vegeta? “But maybe we’ll both be lucky tonight.”
Vegeta stared at Goten intensely as the younger man once again leaned forward to look through the eyepiece once again. “Maybe we will...” he whispered to himself.
“What am I looking at now?” Goten queried.
“That’s the constellation Lyra,” Vegeta explained. “That bright star is Vega.”
“Oh! I saw one!” Goten groped for Vegeta’s hand and squeezed it. “You know, “ he confessed.” Until tonight I’ve always been a little intimidated by the limitless expanse of the space. It made me feel tiny, insignificant.”
“I’ve always found comfort in it.” Vegeta mused out loud. “”When one contemplates the vast precision of the universe, one can’t help but believe in...something.”
He ached for that. Goten heard the edge of hunger for it in his voice.
“You miss it.” The familiar sense of insignificance threatened to overwhelm Goten again. Not with fear, but with a gentle, bewildering sorrow he couldn’t fathom. “Why do you stay here, then?”
“Because everything I want is still here,” Vegeta replied, grabbing Goten’s shoulder, turning the younger man to gaze into the dark eyes staring back at him. “Maybe one day...”
Goten ‘s body tensed in reply, as if stretched taut by the opposing forces of his inclination and his will. The former bid him to melt against Vegeta and kiss him; the other urged Goten to pull away before he made an idiotic blunder. The two opposite compulsion of intense but equal power threatened to tear him in half. He wished Vegeta would take the decision out of his hands, either by letting him go, or by kissing him cross-eyed.
Vegeta let him go.
“Time to go, Brat.”
“Can I come again, Vegeta?”
“Any night, Brat.”
Maybe he did have his father’s luck after all.
