Things you can't take back

“don’t go” he screamed into the darkness bolting upright in bed breathing heavily and lathered in sweat. Curling his arms around his legs he drew his knees up to his chest and began to rock slightly. It was the only way he could hold back the agony that always accompanied that particular nightmare.

Some one pushed open the door to his room and walked in, seconds later a cool hand touched his shoulder. Out of reflex without even thinking about it he flicked it off with a distasteful sneer.

“Don’t touch me,” he whispered flatly, ignoring the other people who entered the room but didn’t approach the bed.

“We’re just worried about you.” came the same practiced line he had heard every other night.

“Well that’s your problem isn’t it,” he whispered again before turning his eyes on them looking at each of the four pilots in turn “Now get the hell out” the last was almost a snarl compared to the flat mono tone of his voice before.

“Duo we were just…” started Heero but was cut of instantly as the usually happy pilot rounded on him.

“Trying to what Heero? you can’t fucking do anything about it and I’m sure as hell not going to tell you anything. So get the fuck out fucking NOW!” he screamed the last making the three near the door leave first. Followed by Heero who paused sparing one last look at the pilot of the Deathscythe who was already staring blankly at the bed again. With a sigh he walked out closing the door behind him not understanding what was going on.

The war had ended three years ago and they had all ended up living at Quatre’s out of simplicity. Nothing much had changed until a few months ago when Duo returned to sleeping at Quatre’s after spending a lot of time away, and had begun to wake up screaming most nights. Heero though it sounded like he was calling out for some one, like he was terrified for that person. Since Duo never offered up the information and viciously insulted any one who mentioned it including Wufei no one really knew what had happened.

Duo waited until he heard the door click shut before he blinked, thick tears spilling down each cheek as he did so. Hugging his knees tighter to his chest he tried to shut out the memories but as always it wouldn’t work.

“Zechs… I’m sorry.” He half whispered half sobbed into his knees as the memories played through his mind.

“Duo, please,” warm and strong arms wrapped around him begging him to listen, “What do you want me to do? I have to go, they need me,” whispered the taller man. Duo felt his body tense at the contact even as he did he knew Zechs would take it the wrong way.

His mind was clamping down on his internal torment forcing him into silence. He knew he was inevitably pushing Zechs away along with the pain but he didn’t know how to stop it. Years of training and combat wouldn’t allow him a moment of emotional weakness, not even now.

“Duo say something, please. If you don’t want me to go then I won’t go. Just tell me what you want, just say something, anything,” spoke Zechs’ his voice as close to begging as the commander ever got.

He wanted to say so much to Zechs, wanted to beg him not to go. Ask him to stay tell him why he didn’t want him to leave, that in the short few months after the chance meeting in a bar Duo loved him. That if Zechs left him he didn’t know how he would survive. That he understood what he had to do and that if he had to leave to let him go to. To simply turn around and burry his face on the mans shoulder and beg him to take him away and to never leave him. Anything to keep the other man with him so he wouldn’t end up alone and hurt without him.

What he did instead he would regret forever…

“Do what you want Zechs I don’t care.” He stated coldly pulling away from the mans arms roughly leaving the blonde staring numbly at his back.

“Is that how you feel,” came a chocked whisper from the man behind him.

Duo could do nothing but stare blankly at the floor, he couldn’t say anything as a reply. So he stood there in silence until Zechs Merquise turned on his heel and walked out of his life.
