Just Say It...

Chapter 01= Just Say It...

The sun was slowly falling down the sky, gracing the azure colours with its red and orange glow, allowing the night to take over again. The streets were empty and the temperature was decreasing quickly. It was not that problem, knowing Russians were familiar with cold climate, and for the tourists around, well, they knew what they were doing when they chose to come here.

Of course people, living in such a place all their lives, were accustomed to the freezing cold, especially since it was winter to begin with, but at least for the present moment, no one cared.

BeyBlade Tournaments were the thing that mattered the most right now, crowds filling the stadiums in hope to see the best bladers fight against each other.

One of said tournaments was concluded some days before, the excitement fading slowly into the lazy peacefulness that was common at that time of the year, and the life was turning back to normal without much noise.

But, apart from the cold and the tournaments, the only thing that mattered to a certain amber-eyed teen was something else. Sitting in front of the window, eyes fixed on the outside, the Neko-Jinn was admiring the sunfall once more, watching as the white snow turned to flames under the attention of the fire flames of the sun, the trees looking as if they were burning. He was thinking that the city looked even more beautiful today.

Rei let a sigh escape his lips as the sun dawned completely under the line of the mountains, the boredom again reaching up to him. The day went on almost sleepily, leaving the Chinese teen behind the window in wait for...

Suddenly remembering why he was there waiting in the first place helped Rei to shake away the lazyness, eyes sparkling with excitement as he could no longer pay attention to the last burning flashes on the snow.

His hair hung lose on his shoulders, all around his light frame, free from its usual ponytail, its tips curling around his features with grace as the teen brushed it slowly, taking all the needed time to unknot it.

To one paying attention he would’ve looked like an angel.

His attitude and long hair always attracted a lot of fans, both male and female -he was the athletic type, not at all frail, but with the grace and the balance of a cat, none to count his amber eyes and raven hair.

He was admired, loved, by many -but a some person owned his heart.

Said Neko-Jinn, who was now ruining the whole angelic pose by cursing his damn hair, was sure he was in love.

The lucky person?

Well, obviously, none other than Hiwatari Kai.

It was nothing new, really, he was crushing over his former team leader for almost a year now, ever since the tournament that made the BladeBreakers new World Champions. It was still so clear in his mind, he could remember all that happened after Tyson defeated Tala in the finals.

Mr. Dickinson showed up in their hotel room while they were celebrating, and told them both Voltaire and Boris were now under trial for various crimes, and the BladeBreakers’ purpose was finally fulfilled. They had saved the world by stopping the two’s insane plan.

Now, they could just split up, going back to their -boring- lives... well, a little less boring now.

Tyson and Max decided to return to Japan with Kenny, after stating clearly that they were ready to take up any challenge that would show up. Judy, Max’s mom, decided she would go back to Japan as well, to take a break from the PPB’s work.

Kai, now no more leader of the team, decided to stay in Russia, taking his grandfather’s place in the business, determined to make sure Biovolt was going to be demolished and turned into a common training are for all the people who loved BeyBlade. Besides, he wanted to help the Demmolition Boys -who would have known they were friends?

That was a great shock to the BladeBreakers, especially Tyson. It almost caused him a heart attack seeing them talking rather happily in the ‘Breakers’ common room.

Rei himself, well, he didn’t know where to go. He wasn’t ready to return to his hometown in China, to the White Tiger’s village, partly because the elders still hadn’t excused him for his betrayal -even if Lee and the others had- and partly because he had to admit to himself he couldn’t force himself to leave his team leader.

Childlish, but true.

It started with a simple crush, because he was really hot. Rei knew for a long time he wasn’t straight. So he accepted the crush and waited for it to fade whilst spying happily at his leader with dreaming eyes.

Then the crush turned to respect and admiration, and in the end, well, it turned to something deeper. Seeing Kai always helping them in his subtle way, made rei realize how much he actually loved that cold, stoic bastard.

How could it happen, Rei didn’t know. But it was clear he couldn’t leave, not now.

Maybe never.

So he asked Kai if he could stay with him in Russia, and surprisingly enough, Kai’s reply was positive.

Of course, remaining with Kai meant he had to learn Russian and convive with the Demolition Boys as well, and Rei was sure at first it would be awfully hard. Have to bear the company of a twist-minded red head, one that sent him in hospital, and two other boys with strange attitudes wasn’t exactly his meaning of happiness... but knowing he was doing this for Kai, he could hope he would bear it all.

Embracing himself for the hardest way, he was astonished to find out that all of them were quite easy to interact with, and a lot funnier than he thought they could be. Spencer wasn’t as stupid as he appeared, and could do really sly remarks, Ian was a smart ass but was nice, and Tala was kinda freaky. even with Bryan he’d found some kind of acquaitance. With that, learning Russian became quite easier and now Rei spoke mainly that language instead of Japanese and Chinese.

Yawning rei stretched and dropped the hairbrush, shaking his head so his ebony hair would stay untangled as he combed it up again, and sighed once more. One year in Russia and still, he hadn’t admit his true feelings to the slate haired blader.

Sure enough they became friends, really close friends in fact -just like the Psychotic Tala and Kai were- but nothing more.

Just friends, just... that.

Rei wasn’t aware it could be that hard. Not that he wasn’t feeling at home, actually he felt more comfortable there than with the White Tigers, but...

He needed something more.

And he was sure, completely sure, that ‘somethinge’ was going to come soon.

As his hands slowly tucked his hair in the ponytail Rei let a dreamy smile linger on his lips, his mind going back to the great event he witnessed -well, to the great event he spyed on.

His eyes closed in contempt as he remembered the glorious moment...

//Start FlashBack//

Rei was cooking since Bryan asked him, well more like demanded, to eat his pancakes.

Being a great cook -he couldn’t help it, he looked doing food even if he wasn’t the one eating it in the end- he gained the Demolition Boys’ appreciation. Strange enough, since Rei at first believed they never ate. But he’d come to know each one’s fav plate, and ever since Biovolt was down, even Kai managed to get his appetite back.

Even now, a year later, the Neko-Jinn was amazed by the amount of food they managed to eat and still remain thin. Even if no one turned into a Tyson kind of eater, they still ate a lot more than any normal teen.

However, each one was very clear in likings. Ian went wild for his chocolate and raspberry cookies, Spencer could drool all day on his soup, Tala went crazy on his Marsala meat and Kai was quite fond of his salty bun.

Well, Bryan loved pancakes. Not just plain ones, he loved every type almost feverishly, especially the blueberry ones, and the strawberry ones. They all managed to eat at least once per week at his and Kai’s house -yes, they lived in together in the same apartment- each one demanding their fav dish, and Rei couldn’t help but oblige.

So he was now happily mixing the ingredients for the pancakes under the Falcon glare, singing under his breath the last single of the Evanescence. He and bryan managed to befriend a lot, and liked each other’s company a lot, both sharing a secreat about their crushes...

Then they heard the front door bang open and knew Tala and Kai were back. The two were almost inseparable, after they worked out with each other. Tala believed Kai had betrayed them, and was really mad with him. But after the fight against Tyson, Kai and Tala had a long talk and became best friends again, together with the rest of the team.

Spying Bryan from his position, giving the older teen his back, Rei saw the flash in the lilac haired blader’s eyes at the sound of Tala’s voice. The Neko-Jinn was the only one that knew Bryan was in love with the red head, and it took him five months to make him confess.

Being in the same situation of Rei, Bryan knew how it felt, just that he had been in love for Tala for five years... five years and two months tomorrow.

Grinning the raven haired teen positioned the ready pancakes in the oven to cook them and reached for the doorknob to go and greet the two teens in the other room, opening the door by half. That’s when they heard it.

“<Are we alone?>” Tala asked in a low voice, looking around with diffident eyes.

Kai shrugged, “<I think Rei’s gone shopping,>” he replied. “<He said he needed some new cooking tools.. or something like that>”.

Tala stretched and let himself fall on the nearest armchair, sighing aloud with a tired face as Kai sat near him, similar expression gracing his own.

After a moment of silence Tala shifted in the chair, “<you know we need to tell them,>” he commented staring in Kai’s eyes.

The slate haired teen nodded wearily, “<I know, but what if they reject us?>” he looked away sourly. “<What if they hate us then?>”

The red head took a deep breath, closing his icy blue eyes, “<it’s been two months now, and we can’t keep pretending. They will find out sooner or later, it’s so obvious... it’s better if we reveal them we are in love>”.

“<But what if they do reject us? I couldn’t stand living without them!>” Kai tightened his hands into fists, and paused. “<But you are right, we will split it all this evening, and what will be will be>” he added in the end.

Rei closed the door soundlessy, careful not to make himself known, his heart beating so much he thought it would just explode in his chest, and turned to his friend.

Bryan near him was just as much troubled as he was, but for once Rei knew it was positive. Now he finally placed the puzzle pieces back into place. In the last few months Rei felt Kai peering at him when he thought he wasn’t looking. The Chinese blader caught the Russian always lingering around him quite nervously, as if he was hiding something from him.

And he was really hiding something!

Rei thought nothing could compare the happiness he felt inside knowing Kai loved him back. finally, Kai loved him back!

Shaking away the strange uneasiness deep inside his chest Rei looked at Bryan, who stood in shock near him, same knowledge and uneasiness clear in his eyes at the realization Tala loved him.

He was happy...

//End FlashBack//

“<Oh, for the fucking shit! Where is he?!>”

Rei cringed slightly, back to reality as Bryan stormed inside the room, fuming. After Ray had closed the door both teens resumed their work almost zombie-like, hearing Kai and Tala leave again. Silence fell on them, both still not believing what happened. Two hours later Kai called them saying, ‘Tala and I have something to say to you both’.

So now both Bryan and the kitten were waiting in Kai’s suite for their loves to come. Rei, combing his hair. Bryan, well...

“<Come on, you asshole!>”

Screaming and fuming with anger, like he was usual to. He could get rid of his tension this way, or blading. but right now, Rei was not going to let Bryan blade in the room... it would cause havoc and distruction.

Bryan stomped his foot on the ground with an angered expression, looking both mad and disappointed and at the same worried. His clear and bright eyes shone with longing as he looked again to the door, straining his ears to hear footsteps, but none were found.

Any other person but Rei could have fled seeing the Falcon roaring that way, but the Chinese blader knew better -Bryan was as nervous as he himself was, and this was the only way he knew to show it.

The lilac haired blader was fuming with repressed energy. It was already sunset, and he wasn’t still back. The day-out was, well, out, and he wasn’t home yet! Okay, okay, Tala was always late when it went to fun around with his best friend, Kai, but today...

...

It took him five years to accept -not realize, that took no time- he loved Tala. It took five years to him, five months to Ray to make him confess. And he had accepted it.

He finally accepted he loved Tala, with the uneasiness the acceptance brought.

It was hard to admit it, since in all his childhood people kept teaching him to have no emotions and no feelings. But now he’d decided to close forever this part of his past, and start a new life with Tala and the others, now that Rei was there too.

It was thanks to Rei he finally admitted it. And after that morning, he knew the stoic red head had feelings for him too. The captain of the former Demolition Boys kept acting strange around him in the last months, even if Bryan didn’t realize that until today.

He was as if he was in daze.

After three months spent in denial and two months spent in drooling on him, Bryan was sure of his feelings, he almost forced them stronger knowing he wanted to change and feel as much as possible. The last year was a really fun one, passed with his friends and the Neko-jinn who actually became one of them.

Rei grown on their hears.

“<Fuck, fuck, fuck,>” again Bryan stomped hard his foot on the floor. “<Where are you Tala?!>”

That was his day, no one was gonna ruin it any way. He had reserved a table at the restaurant for two, planning all the night. Okay, maybe it was lame and too sappy, and it clashed terribly with his usual behaviour, but he deserved it.

The only thing he needed now was...

Tala.

Would the fucking hot bishie came back? Didn’t Tala know Bryan was waiting for him?

‘Of course he doesn’t know,’ the lilac haired blader scolded himself. But that thought couldn’t help him calm down. He was sweating and he was in panic.

How much Love likes to mess things up...

“<Calm down, Bry>” Rei shrieked, feeling the floor creak under Bryan’s strenght. It would do no good to destroy the apartment. “<It’s only seven o’ clock for God’s sake! They’ll be there in no time!>”

Rei’s perceptive hearing actived itself, having him realize someone was outside the door, and he knew istantaneously it was Kai. He felt his scent coming over to him from under the door, and he knew too well the pace the stoic balder used. He actually memorized all the little things about Kai he loved. Together with his footsteps there were Tala’s own, a little faster than Kai’s -both Rei and Bryan looked at the door, their eyes widened but they soon recollected themselves.

They breathed heavily and faked indifference when the door opened revealing an actually smiling Phoenix with a similar smiling Wolf. Kai looked down at the Chinese blader with a little grin then he sat near him with a slow motion, Tala following him near Bryan.

“<Rei... I asked both of you to be here because I need to tell you something, and Tala too, Bryan>” Kai’s voice was a little unsteady. It was clear they were not sure about what they were going to tell.

The tiger’s heart doubled its beats, but he tried against odds to remain calm.

“<Yes, Kai?>” he felt proud of himself because his voice remained cool and revealed nothing about his inner turmoil.

“<Rei, Bryan>” both Tala and Kai started. “<We are... in love>” their voices unsure.

Rei beamed inside and outside, and Bryan smiled, waiting for what had to come...

“<We are in love with each other>” the two Russians ended.

“<Oh, Kai, you can’t know how happy I am...>” Rei cried out at the same time with Bryan’s “<Tala I’m really happy you finally told that and...>”

They both stopped dead in their tracks as the words replayed inside their minds.

With... each other.

Tala and Kai were in love... with each other.

Kai loved Tala, Rei thought.

Tala loved Kai, Bryan thought.

Blind to their friends’ frozen state Tala and Kai looked at each other half shocked, but at the same relieved and confused. This wasn’t exactly the reaction they were expecting, even if it was better than the one they were.

“<So you have nothing to complain about it?>” Tala asked unsure.

“<You are our best friends>” Kai added, looking at Rei. “<We really want you to remain this even if we are not straight...>”

So that was it. They wanted to tell them they loved each other but they feared Bryan and Rei not to be okay with it, to be homofobic or worse.

Rei felt his mind light as he heard himself say in a cheering voice, “<of course we’re happy, you two are a perfect couple!>”, as his lips curled up in a smile.

“<Yeah, we’re glad you finally told us>” added Bryan in the same way.

Tala and Kai smiled brightly, feeling considerably lighter now they finally revealed their friends the truth.

Tala hugged Bryan tightly and Kai hugged Rei, showing them they had appreciated their words, then Kai smiled. “<We’re going out>” he said, his hand in Tala’s.

“<You can’t know how hard it was for us to reveal to you this... just thanks...>” Kai’s and Tala’s faces were lit up in happiness, “<we were afraid you wouldn’t accept us as friends because of this, but you... well, we shouldn’t have worried!>” and with that they left, closing the door behind their shoulders.

Rei blinked twice, still sitting on the window’s frame, and Bryan remained near him too shocked to move.

They weren’t shocked anymore by Tala’s and Kai’s words, but by themselves... because they didn’t feel bad or sad or angry.

They didn’t feel the terrible void inside their hearts like everyone who was dumped by their love would have felt.

The uneasiness they usually felt, that doubled after what they heard that morning, wasn’t anymore there.

Instead, both where almost happy, and that was what shocked them most. Their loves revealed them they loved someone elses, and they were happy for them. It wasn’t fake, they were really happy.

Bryan and Rei remained there in the room in silence, trying to understand their feelings and their thoughts, both not reaching a satisfying conclusion. There was no explanation of what happened, they should be hurt not happy...

Bryan glanced at Rei, his eyes rolling on the delicate features of his friend and the way the hair graced his frame, almost like a fallen angel, and without knowing the cause he blushed slightly.

Rei felt the other’s eyes on him and looked at the lilac haired teen, thinking the Falcon’s eyes were really beautiful in the last rays of the falling sun. He felt himself blush without knowing why, surprised by his own thoughts.

Bryan met Rei’s eyes and felt his heart speed up again. Why was that happening... now?

Why were they feeling so...

“<You know>” the Falcon didn’t know why his voice was sounding so bird-like or why it was so difficult to talk to Rei now. “<I still have a two-people reserved table at the restaurant. It’s a waste if no one uses it>”.

Looking at each other’s eyes they finally realize the astonishing truth: they weren’t in love with Kai and Tala.

They believed they were because both respected their leaders to the maximum, and maybe they actually loved them before... but then they continued thinking they loved them when the real feeling was maybe for someone else... and they couldn’t have realized this before because they were blinded by their feelings for another one.

“<You’re right>” Ray smiled, his cheeks tinged with red. “<We might as well use it>”.

""""""""""""""""""""""""

Tala hugged Kai tightly, as the younger boy rested his cheek on the other’s chest. Tala looked down, a lovely expression on the pale face, and smiled at his koi. Kai just sighed in happiness, closing his eyes in the warm embrace.

He was feeling so good, protected.

“<It seems it went out well>” Tala breathed.

Kai opened his eyes again feeling the vibrations of Tala’s voice through his chest and nodded slightly, looking up at him with burning crimson eyes.

From their position they could see the cold russian land around them, snow covering the mountines, the land and the trees, but it seemed the warmer thing ever existed, having their love near them. They never felt this free before, now that they had revealed to their friends their love for each other. Ian and Spencer went out easier, since they start going out together a week before, but Bryan and Rei, oblivious of the russians’ love were the harder to work with, since neither Kai or Tala knew if they were straight or not or homofobic.

“<Deep inside I knew it was gonna be okay for them,>” Kai whispered, snuggling deeper into his lover’s arms.

“<What?>” Tala glared at Kai with a raised eyebrow, keeping the younger teen one arm away from him. “<But it was you who feared the worse!>”

Kai pouted, feeling the warmth flew away from his body as he tried desperately to return into the nice embrace with Tala blocking him. “<Yeah, okay, it was me, fine? I feared the worse,>” he growled in resignation, pouting.

He was so cute Tala couldn’t help but smile and lean down to kiss him, their lips colliding with love and passion, their eyes closed and their fingers curling around each other. Kai moaned wanting more of it letting the other enter his mouth, and Tala smirked in the kiss, enjoying his taste.

No sleep tonight.
