Ch. 1
Duo had done a few stupid things in his life time, but as he sat shivering in the darkness, there was no denying that this took the cake. Going for a long run was innocent enough, and after 15 miles or so, when his legs gave out and he was covered in sweat, a quick rinse in a nearby stream sounded like a good idea. Then again the brisk fall winds had already brought the first frosts weeks ago, and the icy water knocked the breath right out of him. Barely managing to reach the shore after diving off a small bank, he was now freezing and exhausted. As he realized he lacked the energy to stand let alone run home, it dawned on him that he had run 15 miles straight out and away from town, meaning he still had another 15 miles to get back. Pure genius. But he wasn\'t finished, oh no; not only had he stranded and froze himself, but his evening run had lasted far longer than he originally planned. The sun was already setting and there was no sanctuary for miles. That was the stupidest thing of all.
As his teeth chattered and a constant tremor found his limbs, Duo knew that if the elements didn’t kill him, the Demon’s would. He was an idiot. Plane and simple. Being out after dark was a death wish, a fact that had ruled over the villages in Elfiev for hundreds of years. The Demons that controlled the power of darkness had little patience for humans, especially when the clan wars began. Now it was one powerful clan against another, with humans acting as pawns here or there; daytime weapons to try and catch a rival clan unaware. So now when night fell and the Demons emerged from their hidden House’s, villagers were forced to retreat behind holy wards, or find an untimely end. Duo just hoped a frozen sleep would find him before the Demons did.
He closed his eyes and curled into a ball among the thick roots of an old tree, hiding from the bitter wind as best he could when the last rays of light disappeared over the trees. He didn\'t want to see the shadows stir and grow, reaching out to smother even the stars. He didn’t want to see his knees disappear from sight, so close but unseen by his eyes beneath the kind of darkness that was alive with power. If he didn’t look, he could imagine he was in his bed, and that the thick presence of Darkness swelling around him was just his blankets; and that maybe he would wake to see the dawn. If he didn’t see the utter blackness of night unfold around him, he hoped that maybe the terror building in his stomach would fade away; but then he’d always been a wishful thinker.
Lucky for him, Duo didn’t hear the soft steps making their way up the smooth stones of the river bank, and even luckier, his senses slipped far enough from him to miss the curious fingers that brushed the ice from his bangs.
---
The young prince stalked up the bank of the near frozen river with scowl tightly across his lips; his feet kicking stones that on any other night would have remained silent. The court in the House of the Dragon had been wearing on his nerves, each sniveling excuse for a Demon trying to gain his fathers favor through him. He hadn’t had a moment alone in ages, and even the thought of yet another pointless audience with the sons and daughters of his clan’s nobles was enough to send him flying out of the House before the sun had set completely.
He knew his powers would be weakened by the little light remaining, but even with a headache and now sluggish ability to draw the nights power, Wufei was still stronger than most of his household. That didn’t stop his father from assigning bodyguards however, two in fact, that had been remarkably difficult to give the slip to in order for him to take a well earned walk on his own. Master Heero and Trowa were probably picking up his trail at this very moment. Knowing that his current freedom was severely limited by the pair of warriors, Wufei stomped on, his mind supplying a host of interesting ways he could vent his frustrations, and all of them involving a few certain nobles in pieces.
He was so caught up in his mental course of dismemberment, that he almost missed the foot prints leading away from the waters edge. The sight of them brought Wufei to a sudden stop, and he stared unbelieving at the tracks. Someone had been there, quite recently by the water still pooling in the bare heel prints. Not just someone, a human. All thoughts of the court wiped away, he carefully turned and followed the trail, noting where the owner stumbled and began dragging their feet. Wufie felt his heart beat quicken. He’d never seen a live human before; his father thought it unnecessary for him to be exposed to the ‘trash of day’ and had his guards take care of any trespassers well before they neared the House. It seems his early escape would prove intriguing indeed.
He was rewarded for his efforts just a few meters into the woods, almost tripping over the pathetic creature practically convulsing from the cold. Wufei was amazed. He had always thought a human would be an ugly beast, like some primitive animal; but the boy in question looked almost like a demon himself save for the long chestnut braid. The ghostly pail skin almost glowed in the darkness, making the lithe form look even more out of place. Unable to resist, he reached out and brushed the bangs from the boys face to get a better look, startled when he felt ice below his fingers.
Was the human stupid enough to trek this far into Demon territory and then give hypothermia a try? Did he think he could sleep off the deadly chill and run home in the morning light? Wufei could only stare at the cherub face with blue tined lips in wonder, marveling at it’s innocent beauty. As the minutes passed, he realized the human’s breathing was growing more and more shallow with each breath. He was dying, freezing to death no doubt, and for some reason it made Wufei’s chest ache. Without thinking Wufei tore his fur lined cloak from his shoulders and wrapped it around the boy, scooping him into his arms. It unnerved him to feel how cold and fragile the body seemed, and Wufei wasted no time carrying the unconscious human to an old cabin just up the stream.
---
“There..” The tall, lanky shadow motioned to a fresh set of boot prints.
“Hn...” A second shadow took off down the path, following the trail at top speed.
Silently the pair navigated the trail, power pooling below their feet and propelling them through the darkness toward their quarry. They slowed to a stop as a cabin came into view, a bright orange glow emanating from the broken windows. Sharing a wary glance, they stalked toward the light, careful to move without a single sound until they reached the door.
Bursting into the room, the pair was ready to subdue an attack from their unwilling master in an attempt to escape yet again. They were unprepared however, for the sight found behind the thin wooden door. Their master was there alright, but he was not alone.
“S..Sir?” The taller of the two found his voice first.
“I can’t explain anything so don\'t bother asking Master Trowa. I found this human, and I intend to see that he stays alive.” The young prince with his deep ebony eyes glared at them, his chest bare arms full of a nearly naked human youth. “He was made of ice...I’m warming him up. That\'s all I can offer you...”
“Your father will not be pleased. HIs orders in regards to humans are perfectly clear..” The shorter man with his unruly hair and hard eyes matched the Princes glare easily.
“Save your lectures Heero...My father can deal with me later. I’ve been wanting to see a live human for ages, and now I have one, and I don’t intend on letting him die until I have a chance to soothe my curiosity.”
“Hn..” The hard blue eyes narrowed, but didn’t bother to argue. Heero and Trowa were simply his bodyguards, they had no power to try and tell their prince what was to be done.
“When his lips aren\'t blue we will move him back to the house. I forbid either of you to breathe so much as a whisper about this...”
“Sir, the rules... bringing a human to our House would get any one else killed... even you should not...”
“Enough Trowa. I say he comes with me. As I said, I will deal with my fathers rules and you both will kindly remain quiet about it....” Wufei turned back to the boy in his arms, a strange expression on his face. “...there\'s something i need to learn... but I don\'t know what quite yet...”
“Yes Sir....”
“Hn.”
With that the two guards took up their stance by the door, waiting until their prince deemed his charge warm enough to wrap in the cloak once more. They let Wufei tote his new prize back to the House, and swallowed thickly as the first human in over a century slipped unnoticed into the Prince’s private annex.
