Chapter One: Trouble Begins
The city in which she lived had gone down from low to lower in the fourteen years of her life. The city was already a dry wasted land in which people could hardly survive. But you have to take what you can…or so that’s what her mother said.
Living poor never seemed to bother her; the more days that passed the more she studied alchemy. Her skills had maxed by the age of nine, specializing in alchemy of ice. It wasn’t much but it satisfied her.
By the age of twelve she had grown tired of what she had accomplished and where she lived and decided it was time to move on. Packing a single bag she left home in search of more talented alchemists.
Her searches brought her to a rather large city, surly there had to be some others there. Tired from her journey she sat down in café spending the last of her money for a sandwich.
She finished her sandwich and sat there a few moments to rest before setting out for a job. She looked around the café at the other people. Most of the laughing and joking around with friends, some stuffing their faces not caring what other people may think.
At the corner table were two dark haired men dressed in blue, one was eating and talking at the same time and the other was looking at her. She gave him a friendly smile and he turned back to listen to his friend. She shrugged and rested her head on the table.
The cool table felt good on her face, but she still had a strange feeling about her. She lifted her head up and looked around; the dark haired man was looking at her again. As soon as he noticed her looking back at him he looked away.
That was enough for her, she picked up her bag and left. She walked a little ways down the street, listening to the children laughing and playing, in her own little world.
A hand on her shoulder brought her out of her trance and back to reality. She turned around to see the dark haired man from the café. He placed a hand gently on her cheek, tracing the outline of her cheek.
She jerked away which seemed to agitate him. “You’re an alchemist aren’t you?”
He said tightening his grip on her shoulder.
“Yes…but how…”
“You look like one.” He smiled “What do you want?”
“Are you with the state?”
“Why does it matter?”
“You are aren’t you?”
“Does it really matter?”
“Must you always answer a question with a question?”
“Must you?”
“Yes I must. And just so you know, I’m here looking for someone who may have enough skill to teach me something that I don’t know yet.”
“Now…Why did you approach me like this?”
“I didn’t want to seem rude for staring at you earlier. You’re just so beautiful its hard not to.”
“Yeah whatever…flattery doesn’t work.”
“Thought I would give it a try.” He smiled.
“Excuse me I’m afraid I have to continue my search.
“I could teach you.”
“I don’t trust you.”
“And why not?”
“Because you’re some strange perv who started talking to me in the street. Now goodbye.” She said breaking free of his grip and turning to go, half expecting him to say something she looked back and he just smiled.
“God what is your problem.”
“Nothing I just have a thing for skirts.” He smiled
“Perv!” she said and stomped off
“You do realize that I am gonna have to turn you into the state right?”
“Do what?”
“Practicing alchemy at such a young age. But if you let me teach you then I can’t say nothing.”
“What makes you so special?”
“Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang. And I would love to help you out.” He smirked
I have a feeling I’ll regret this…”
“Nonsense come I’ll take you to my place you can stay there for a while till we find you some where else.”
“Once again…I don’t think I trust you…”
“You’re young and you’re alone…I don’t think you have much of a choice.”
“I still don’t trust you but ok”
“Good,” he said turning to leave “come its this way.”
“Ok. Wait.” She said picking up the bag that she had set down earlier.
He slowed down giving her time to catch up. “By the way,” he said slipping his arm around her waist carefully. “what’s your name?”
“Jessi, and if you don’t remove your arm I will remove it for you.”
“Fine.” He sighed putting it into his pocket.
