Another one for ya. This may be a bit angst at first, and because I really don’t know where it’s headed.
Gone
He was gone.
She knew it. She felt it. There was a deep feeling of dread in her heart. She always knew he could go any time. She had no hold on him at all. It was her fault she fell in love with someone so unpredictable and undependable. Didn’t he say that himself?
She sighed and threw back the covers. She just as well face it instead of lying in bed moping all day. She did have a life. It would be days and nights of endless loneliness but still a life . She had people depending on her.
She slipped on her robe and slippers, and padded softly to the door. She knew there would be no note. He wasn’t like that. He wasn’t much for good-byes. But still it would have been nice.
She walked past the living room, half expecting to see him sitting in front of the TV flicking through the channels. Quiet. Nothing. Silence.
She could smell the coffee as she entered the kitchen. One cup was tipped upside down in the strainer. Well at least he had a cup of coffee before he left. But as she investigated further she found he had rummaged through the frig. She sighed and smiled . He ate. Probably the last thing he’ll eat for a while. She poured herself a cup and gazed out the window, wondering where he was right now. She wondered if he had a mission or just had left.
She turned and headed for the room she dreaded the most. She moved down the hall with a deliberate slow pace, not wanting to face the inevitable. She reached his door and gently pushed it open. She blinked and looked around. It was empty. Everything was gone. The bed was crumpled and unmade. She entered the room looking around, making sure he had taken every thing. She placed her cup on the dresser, and went to the window. She tore open the curtains, letting the early morning light into the room.
She looked out into the bright sunlight. How dare the sunshine with her heart so broken? But yet the world t ot on didn’t it, no matter what. And so would she even if he didn’t come back. She prayed he would but she didn’t know. She sighed and made her way to the bed. She pulled off the blankets and sheets. Well, anyway, the room would be clean for him when he came back. No matter what , this would always be his room. She picked up his pillow, held it close, knowing he had slept on it and she hugged it tight, wishing with all her might that she had hugged him.
She pulled the pillow case off and dropped the pillow back to the bed.
She gathered all the stuff up and hauled it to the washroom and stuffed it into the washer. After it was started she grabbed the broom and dustpan. She made her way back to his room , slowly, as if she didn’t want to go on with this chore.
She stood in the room a moment before she tackled the dust bunnies and cobwebs. She was surprised with how much dust had accumulated in just a week. She hadn’t paid attention before. She finished with the room, then went to the closet. As she looked through it she noticed something dark on the floor. She reached down and picked it. It was Duo’s favorite cap. She smiled as she held it in her hands. She wondered why he left it.
She put it on her head and shut off the light and closed the door to the closet. She walked across the room to the door. As she reached the door. She’d put the clean sheets and blankets on the bed when they were done. Then she would close the door and wait for him to return.
As she waited for the dryer to finish she sat in the kitchen and did her bills. It would be harder now with the shop but maybe she could get Howard to help out. It was a good business and she could make a decent living and she would.
She tapped the pencil on the table. She would get along just fine with out him. She would be lonely but she would survive. She had to, people where counting on her.
As she made her decision, the phone rang.
She dropped the pencil and rose to answer it .
“Maxwell and Schibecker. How can I help you?” She paused as the face popped up on the screen. “Sally!”
“Hilde! How are you doing? Has Duo left yet?”
She grimaced. “Yeah, He’s gone. Sorry you missed him.”
“Hilde, it’s ok. I was making sure he was gone. He had only a short time tot Wt WuFei. You know how he gets if anyone is late.”
Hilde laughed in spite of her hurt.
“He didn’t tell you good by, did he?”
Hilde shook her head.
“Dumb boy. Don’t worry, Hilde. He’ll be back.”
She shook her head. “I’m not so sure. He took everything.”
Sally smiled. “There was a reason for that, ok. I can’t tell you about it right now. But when I can I will ok? Just don’t give up. Duo talks about you all the time. I think he cares for you a lot.”
“Well. If you say so, Sally.”
“Say, Hilde , Why don’t you come to Preventer Headquarters?”
“When? Do you need me?”
“Well, not today but in a few days , I could use your hacker skills.”
“Ok. Let me know. I’ll get Howard to cover the junk yard.”
“Sure. Just hang in there ,Hilde.”
“I’ll be fine, Sally I was alone before I met him and I can do this now. I have the business to run, but let me know if you need me. I’ll be glad to help you.”
“Great, I’ll let you know in a few days. Talk to you later, kiddo!”
“Ok! Thanks for calling ,Sally. Bye!”
Hilde sat back and frowned. She wondered why he couldn’t have told her that? She shook her head And stood up. She had better go talk to Howard. He had to know what was going on.
To be continued……
