My immortal
{I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
Because your presence still lingers here
And it wont leave me alone}
Heero stood in front of Duo's grave in his long black coat, black jeans and shirt. He was thinking about the crash and Duo's last words to him, "I love you Heero... remember that... I'll wait for you... No matter what I love you..." Then Duo had died. When the paramedics had found them Heero was still hugging Duo's form and crying. They had to put him in the ambulance and taken him to the hospital. When he got back everyone had tried to comfort him but this was his only comfort Duo's grave-sight where he could still feel his lover's presence.
He didn't want Duo to feel alone. He didn't want Duo's soul to be lost like in the legends. The legends of ghosts who were turned into poltergeists because they couldn't remember who they were or what their business was. He traced the lettering for the hundredth time.
DUO MAXWELL
AC180 - AC200
FRIEND, PARTNER, AND HERO
REST IN PEACE
He had brought a single red rose. "Love..." he whispered knowing its meaning for himself and Duo.
Heero still remembered that Duo was the first one to get him to talk to the other pilots. Duo was the one who had saved him many times (he wasn't about to count the times he saved Duo) and it was Duo who convinced him it would be OK in the end. He couldn't help but miss the lithe form of his lover bouncing around and laughing.
Sometimes he swore Duo was standing right next to him. That he could still smell Duo's shampoo sometimes, even though it had been thrown out. He awoke expecting Duo to be next to him; he even heard Duo's voice calling him in a crowd but he knew it was his imagination. It couldn't be Duo; this was proof. He sighed looking at the tombstone again and then he left turning around only once to whisper that he would be back tomorrow.
{These wounds wont seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There’s just too much that time cannot erase}
Heero drove home on his motorcycle speeding only a little, he had learned his lesson about driving. He sighed and flipped on the radio; of course it was a sappy song. Someone was whining about true love and his girlfriend. He flipped it off again not wanting to hear anything that reminded him of Duo. He couldn't stand it. Duo wasn't here to help him. The other pilots had really tried to help but they couldn't. ‘Duo, why did you have to leave me?! We were happy we had each other and we had jobs and friends… Now none of it matters and time isn't helping this. I thought time was supposed to heal people, make the pain lessen but it just keeps getting worse.’ Heero thought wanting nothing more than to have Duo behind him holding on tight.
{When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you scream I’d fight away all of your fears
And I’ve held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me}
Heero went into his apartment, slammed the door and collapsed against it, crying. ‘Duo... Why did you go..? Why...’ Heero let his mind wander to when he had helped Duo with his nightmares. Duo used to have horrible dreams about events and things chasing him and rejection from Heero they just wouldn't go away...
////flashback////
Heero heard Duo tossing and turning in his bed. He turned around, away from the computer screen for a moment. Duo did this every night. It was awful. Heero couldn't sleep because of it. Duo would scream and toss and turn and with a squeaky bed that wasn't good.
Heero walked over to the bed and shook Duo's shoulder gently. Duo pulled Heero down next to him kissing him hard. Heero was shocked. Duo was kissing him… Here… Now… Duo let him go, slowly. Heero rose telling himself he would never try to wake Duo up that way again. But, he tried again shaking harder.
"Mhn... Heero!!" Duo said shocked. he had just dreamed he had kissed Heero and here he was waking him up.
"You have to get rid of those nightmares." Heero said monotone not revealing the inner turmoil of what just happened "You scream."
"I do...?" Duo asked; he never knew he did that.
"Hai.*”
"Well I'm sorry! I just get them. I don't try to, I just do…" Duo said shrugging.
"Try a pair of headphones with soothing sounds." Heero said turning back to the desk and going back to work on the reports.
"Good idea! Thanks Heero!"
////flashback end////
It had helped a lot. Duo hadn't gotten a nightmare since he got the tape. Then he found out it wasn't a tape of waves, but of rain and a forest. He had laughed then, he had thought Duo would have been a beach go-er but he was wrong.
He couldn't move on, little memories like that made it impossible. Duo still had his heart even in death. Heero put his head down knowing that he still couldn't bear to go in the bedroom yet; he had to wait until he got his emotional strength up.
{You used to captivate me with your resonating light
But now I’m bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me}
Heero remembered what had first attracted him to Duo, that unending happiness and light of soul. Duo was a beautiful person too. He always tried to help, even if he wasn't wanted. Duo had always been like that, helping people and not thinking of himself. He would help Heero too, more than he had known. He had always made Heero feel more secure and his greetings after a mission were always cherished. Duo was one of the very few constants in his ever-changing life. And now... he was gone; another shattered memory.
Heero made his way to the living room collapsing on the couch. He couldn't take this anymore; he had to find a way to get over Duo. But his brain just kept going back to the memories like when he told Duo he loved him...
////flashback////
"Duo... I love you." Heero said, hoping Duo would take pity on him, and not kill him for it.
"Really?" Duo asked, his voice was barely above a whisper.
"Yeah."
Duo hugged him "Gods of Hell, I love you too Heero!"
Heero's breath hitched, "Oh Duo…" Heero hugged Duo tighter knowing that Duo wasn't lying; he never lied. "Thanks."
"For what?" Duo pulled his head back, looking at Heero deeply.
"For everything..." Heero whispered, clinging to Duo as a child would a doll.
////flashback end////
Heero felt the tears on his cheek and wiped them away. He wouldn't think about it! He sighed and tried to watch a movie, one that could distract him from his loss. He settled on a horror movie from the twentieth century, but it was incredibly boring after his own life. He ended up falling asleep.
*********
Duo stood in front of him, smiling, but his eyes, so expressive, were sad. Heero called out to him "Duo!"
Duo looked up at him. After a long moment he said, "Heero, you've got to move on in your life. You have the others worried worse than usual Q will have another mental breakdown under this much stress and Trowa can't do much to ease this kind of tension. Wu-man is even worried. They knew how close we were. They knew you'd be devastated, but you... they want you to get over me. You’ve gotten way too skinny; you’re pining away. You need to move on!"
“But Duo! I want to be with you!” Heero said, eyes widening, and pain searing through him.
“I want to be with you too, but I can’t, not at the expense of your life! You need to live Heero”
"You want me to move on…" Heero whispered, his logic not working. He couldn't bring enough sense into his head right now. He was too overjoyed at seeing Duo, here, in front of him, but these words cut through that joy and made his world almost shatter into sorrow.
"Well... No I don’t, but you should... Listen, I love you Heero. More than ever, but you should move on I'm not there for you to love. Please, we can be together later after you've led a long happy life. I just want you to be happy with the life you have left!" Duo sighed and tried to smile again but his eyes filled with tears.
"But Duo! I can't ever love anybody like I love you!" Heero said, knowing Duo was right but refusing to give up.
"I'm not saying you have to find another! I'm just saying you should try to move on and be happy!" Duo came closer, "Heero, I'm getting yelled at for this. Please just move on and remember, I'll love you forever and I'll wait for about fifty to a hundred years for ya…" Duo kissed Heero.
********
Heero shot up, swearing he could feel Duo's lips on his own. he thought he heard a whispered "goodbye" and was sweating looking around for Duo. He could have sworn Duo was here, in this room, a moment ago.
Then it hit him; it had been Duo speaking to him. Had Duo been giving him a final kick in the ass to get him going? Probably, knowing his lover. Heero replayed the dream in his mind. Then he really started crying. He cried for a good twenty minutes until he couldn't cry any more.
{These wounds wont seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There’s just too much that time cannot erase}
Heero sighed as the tears stopped falling. He would have to face this eventually, even if it broke him. Slowly, he stood up and started to walk to their bedroom, not sure he could handle it.
Heero slowly opened the door and entered the room. As soon as he was inside the scent hit him. It was Duo's scent, soft, masculine and just Duo. It still lingered on the bed that still wasn't made. It had been Duo's turn to make the bed, explaining why it was like that.
He could still picture everything, Duo sleeping on his side when Heero came home, Duo sitting at the window staring into the park across the street his eyes alight with the joy of watching the children playing, and Duo being with him laying with him and cuddling.
Heero let a few more tears fall before making the bed and putting all of Duo's clothes (except a few shirts which he placed in their own bag so he would have them later) in a big trash bag. He kept cleaning his brain going through the memories attached to each object.
He finished and looked around him, everything was in order, the pictures on the wall, the dressers. Duo's old teddy Heero had given him was sitting on his alter with a candle burning in front of it. He had the two things he really needed in his pocket. Heero sighed taking the trash-bag of Duo's clothes, dropping them off to the Salvation Army, before going to the flower shop.
{When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you scream I’d fight away all of your fears
And I’ve held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you’re gone
And though you’re still with me
I've been alone all along}
Heero went back to the graveyard again, for the last consecutive time. He’d s till come back sometimes, but not everyday as he had been doing. He had two-dozen long stem red roses on the back of his motorcycle. Heero walked the familiar path to the grave and then he kneeled in the front and placed the roses on the ground. He reached a hand into his pocket taking out the two things he had stowed there earlier. He slipped Duo's golden cross on the front of the tombstone and then placed the simple golden ring that symbolized their love on the top.
He said a prayer for Duo, and then decided he would say a few last things to his beloved. "Duo, I still love you and you know I always will but... Your message got through. Ninmou Ryoukai. Never forget Duo you said you'd wait, so don't go falling for any dead people!" Heero smiled and left that grave for the final time, knowing Duo had heard him and was laughing happily. He could finally let go and now, he would live his life.
{When you cried I’d wipe away all of your tears
When you scream I’d fight away all of your fears
And I’ve held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me}
