Death and His Pilot
Chapter One
Golden rays of the early morning sun fell upon the sleeping forms of two former soldiers. The first had wild brown hair and blue eyes, which were currently closed. The other’s hair was also a sort of brown, but the shade was lighter and the tresses longer, spread over them both like a blanket. Violet eyes opened and gazed at his new lover in his embrace. It had taken years to get Heero to turn to him, but he knew it wasn’t finished, not by a long shot.
Smiling sadly, Duo slid out of bed, taking care to cover Heero with the blanket they’d kicked off during the night. He grabbed a robe and brush before heading down the stairs to the scents of coffee, tea, and breakfast. Unsurprisingly, the others were already seated around the table.
“Is something wrong, Duo?” Quatre asked, glancing up as the braided pilot entered the room and headed for the coffee.
“No, everything is happening just as it’s supposed to be,” Duo said, shaking his head. “I was just thinking about things. No worries.”
“You, thinking?” Wufei joked lightly, but he watched Duo carefully. The American had chosen his words very carefully as to not lie without telling them anything. A glance to Quatre proved that he Arabian had noticed the same thing.
Quatre followed Duo up onto the roof after breakfast, lying down beside him. The taller boy barely looked up, most of his eye movement hidden by dark sunglasses. “Anything you need, Cat?”
“You seem to be upset about something,” Quatre said, staring up at the sky. “Is it about Heero?”
“Isn’t it always?” came the sarcastic reply. “Quatre, I don’t think you can help me with this one. It’s up to Heero, though I’m going to miss the guy when he’s away. But he’ll be back. Before sliding off of the roof onto the balcony, Duo paused to add an afterthought. “I hope.”
As Duo dropped, Quatre noticed something odd. On the backside of his cross, there were five jewels, and one was glowing very dimly, the blue one.
By lunch, the jester’s mask was firmly back in place as though it had never been missing. It was also then that Heero staggered into the kitchen, looking slightly worse for wear. Instantly, Duo was at his side, supporting the pilot of Wing.
“Duo, you don’t have to mother me,” he grumbled, wincing at the ache in his muscles. “I can walk on my own.”
“Believe me, Hee-chan, I’m not mothering you,” Duo said with a saucy wink. “If I were mothering you, we wouldn’t have been doing what we were last night.”
Heero scowled, half-glaring at his lover and half staring at him in disbelief. “Why aren’t you as sore as I am, or as tired? Considering the events, you should be in my position right now, not the other way around.”
“Maybe I just have greater endurance.”
“As fascinating as your sex life is, Maxwell, could you not talk about it while I’m eating?” Wufei growled, glaring at both of the brown-haired teenagers.
Not liking the grin spreading across Duo’s face, Trowa and Quatre quietly left the kitchen with their plates in hand, intent on eating in the living room. “Why, I never thought you’d be interested in the happenings of a bedroom. Did you know that if you lick Heero in this one spot right-”
“Duo!” both Heero and Wufei screamed, both of their faces red. Lunch forgotten, Wufei grabbed a knife from the counter. Laughing, the braided boy started his daily task of running for his life. Hearing the crashes from downstairs, the pilots of Sandrock and Heavyarms shook their heads and Quatre went to find the repairman’s number.
That evening, Duo pulled Heero aside after dinner. “Here, this is for you.”
Opening the small box, Heero looked at the pendent resting inside with confusion. “Duo? What…”
Smiling, Duo reached over and pinched the sides, opening the locket. There was a picture of the two of them from their first date, only a few weeks before, on one side. There other was etched with some symbols that made no sense to Heero. “I have a feeling that this might come in handy for you soon. Heero, just remember that I love you very much, no matter what decision you make.”
The violet eyed boy had bounced off to infuriate Wufei once again before Heero got the chance to ask about what he’d said, leaving the Japanese teenager confused. He shook his head with a slight smile, closing the locket and slipping it over his head and under his shirt. He’d figure it out eventually.
It was with a pang of sorrow that Duo watched his lover for the rest of the night, waiting for ten. His knowledge of what was to come ended at ten, and the uncertainty made him nervous.
The clock began to strike and the wind began to pick up despite being indoors. The other four pilots looked up in alarm, Heero especially, as the winds seemed to be concentrating around him. Soon, light began to envelope the young man, making it hard to see him past it. When the light faded, Heero was gone.
“Say hello to my past for me,” Duo whispered, tears beginning to fall.
